Concept Statement NEXT HUB will feature large windows allowing natural light to fill the space giving students and users a pleasant experience to work. Exciting areas to collaborate and brainstorm will be marked with blocks of color that spill into the stark white space that surround it. NEXT HUB will reflect DC’s unique qaulities from greenery of public gardens, the concrete of the urban planning, bleached neoclassicism, and black iron to represent today’s modern world.

Program The future is in our hands, at NEXT HUB, the goal is to provide a community lifelong learning center. NEXT HUB will give students access to a premier education at many stages of one’s life; providing active and diverse educational experiences.

It is about encouraging more meaningful faculty interactions, increasing student engagement and connections to other learners. The hope is for citizens to continue to grow and improve through all stages of life.

Hues in the Built Environment Sinofsky and Knirck (1981) that colors affect the behavior, attitude, attention span and learning of students as well as the time concept of both the students and teachers.

According to Bross and Jackson (1981), school colors that are well liked by the students will have an effect on muscle tension as well as motor control skills. Many other studies have also shown that cool colors affect and lower blood pressure.

According to Mahnke (1996) some colors are appropriate for protecting eyesight and supporting the work environment, as well as physical and mental health.

Using dull colors that won’t strain the eyes on the side and end walls in classrooms is important in ensuring that children can rest their eyes as they turn their heads in the process of studying or doing their homework. (Rent Etkisi, 2017)

Green and Blue – Walls painted with these colors can create feelings of calm and relaxation in employees. Green gives eyes some rest and helps reduce anxiety. This is especially helpful where lighting is not at an optimal level, or employees spend the day staring at computer screens. Blue helps reduce stress by lowering the blood pressure and heart rates. Some studies state that people are more productive in blue rooms. (Rent Etkisi, 2017) Yellow and Orange – These colors, associated with the sun, make a person feel warm and happy. However, when they’re too bright, they can be associated with hunger, anger and frustration. Yellow, the color of caution, in a workplace can cause eye strain by over-stimulating the eyes. This can annoy and irritate employees. (Rent Etkisi, 2017) Red – This color can stimulate and excite employees. It can increase respiration, heart rate and brain activity. (Rent Etkisi, 2017) Pink – A very feminine color, pink can have a relaxing effect on employees. For a professional workplace, however, the casual, cozy feelings that pink evokes are not really suitable. (Rent Etkisi, 2017)

Nature in the Built Environment Views of nature from classroom windows have also been shown to improve directed attention skills compared to views of less natural scenes or of built environments (Tennessen and Cimprich, 1995).

One randomized study of 94 public high school students in Illinois found that students assigned to classrooms with a “green� view scored higher on attention tasks and recovered from a stressful experience faster than students with no window or a window with a barren view (Li and Sullivan, 2016).

(EcoBNB, 2019) Green exposure results as well in greater use of logical reasoning and more innovative approaches. The sense of wellbeing, positive moods enhance learning and more efficient decision-making on complex tasks. A green workplace can result in a 15% increase in productivity. Plants have a positive effect on worker satisfaction. (EcoBNB, 2019) Working or living in a green environment brings people closer together. It has been shown that small scale greenery displays, in particular, has a positive effect on social cohesion in neighborhoods. In areas with more greenery have far less problems from aggression, violence, and vandalism. (EcoBNB, 2019)
