2015 marks the 24th Annual Bull Sale for Spruce View Angus, Wayne and Dallas Grant! This year lands on perhaps the most exciting year we have seen in the cattle business ever! Record prices are being achieved in all classes of cattle and looking down the road it brings a smile to every cattle producer involved. The Spruce View herd has been producing bulls for the past 24 sales that are the right kind. The bull pen offers bulls with performance, length, hair and the extra bit of stoutness that is backed by a powerful set of ranch cows.

In Agriculture we are always looking towards next year and what can be improved upon to maximize the profit. So to be prepared for next year it is this years decisions that will impact this. You will notice going through the catalogue there has been a slow changing of the guard as there is a newer generation of herdbulls that have taken the pen by storm and caused quite a stir from those who have been through the pen already. New Sire groups include AAR Ten X who was bred strictly to heifers and his sons are standouts in the pen and being raised by first calvers show the ability that the Spruce View females offer. As well this is the first set of Geis Butler calves, Butler was purchased out of the Geis Dispersal as one of the top selling bulls that day. His calves are packed

right full of meat and muscle and will catch your eye.

As well some ET calves by Crooked Creek Jumbo 26K, outcross genetics, most importantly very good cattle that are right for the times. Another sale highlight will be the offering of a Bandoliermere GV 13S Two Year Old which was retained last year to be used on a select set of cows out of Geis Queen 175J! This mating combines genetics that are powerful, predictable and not available anywhere else. A unique opportunity to say the least!

Bandoliermere 5A is part of an exciting flush which we dug deep into the tank to flush a rock solid cow to GV 13S. The potential of these exciting genetics is unlimited. 13S was described as many as a meat machine as he weighed 2375lbs as a four year old bull in 1965. Noted for his structural correctness and free moving frame, Noted for his numerous daughters that were very productive including his full sister Rose 37U produced Dynasty 2F. 13S influenced the Diamondhead bull pen immediately with his sons being champions and popular wherever they were found. As a mature bull many breeders from

Out of the Lookout Countess 283M bull we purchased out of the Lookout Dispersal, her production was excellent, phenotype is flawless and pedigree is full of productive, influential cattle. 283M was also the dam of the Canuck bull at Lookout which we later purchased a son out of him as well. The more we can keep wrapping up the foundation cows/sires the stronger more predictable the genetics will be.

But the highlight of these calves are themselves, packed full of muscle, with a deep rib, wide chest floor and correct feet and legs make these bulls beneficial to the beef industry. WHAT IS AN EPD?

Terms & Conditions

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are genetic predictions producers can use when making selection decisions. These values are available on performance animals from breed associations. It is important to understand you cannot compare EPDs between breeds, only within a breed. A buyer is always advised to use more than just the EPDs regardless of accuracy when making purchase decisions.

TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash, cheque, or previously arranged financing. Settlement is to be made following the completion of the sale, to the clerks of the sale. Animals will not be released until settlement is made.

All monies are in Canadian funds.

An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the genetic merit of an animal using relevant performance and pedigree information. EPDs are expressed in the units of measure. For example, birth weight is expressed in pounds, and rib-eye area is expressed in square inches.

DISPUTES: Bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved in a dispute. If there is no advance by either party, the buyer will be the person from which the auctioneer received the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final in these cases.

EPDs come from performance data. Producers submit data on their cattle. From this data, researchers look at the differences between animals raised in the same environment (contemporary groups) and ascertain the portion of that difference that is due to genetics (heritability). Also included in this is how the different traits relate to each other and interact together (correlations). They can then directly compare genetic differences among animals using the pedigree information contained in the CHA and AHA registries. The result is a value that can be directly compared between animals and across environments, an EPD.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: All announcements made from the block will take precedence over any printed material from the catalogue. Therefore buyers should pay close attention for such announcements.

EPD’S USED IN THIS CATALOGUE Calving Ease EPD (CE) - calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted.

Birth Weight EPD (BW) - is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birth weight EPDs usually indicates more calving difficulty.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW) - reflects progeny growth differences up to 205-days.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW) - reflects progeny growth differences through to 365-days.

Milk EPD (Milk) - indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning.

Total Maternal EPD (TM) - also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the Weaning Weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205-Days and combines the genetics for pre-weaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny.

Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE) - represents the ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first calf heifers, when compared to daughters of other sires. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing daughters with a higher probability of unassisted calving. (important to understand is that zero is not “average”)

BREEDING GUARANTEE: All cattle are sold as sound and right and sell with a “Responsible Breeder’s Guarantee of Satisfaction”. In the unlikely event of a dispute, the regular sale terms and conditions, standard with the Canadian Angus Association shall apply.

SOUNDNESS EVALUATION: All bulls will have passed evaluation for physical & reproductive soundness by a veterinarian. All bulls will be semen tested prior to delivery and will have be accompanied, at time of delivery, by a semen certificate that meets or exceeds the CAA standard of 70% .

RISK: Ownership risk to the purchaser commences when the auctioneers hammer falls. Insurance is available sale day.

LIABILITIES: All people attending the sale do so at their own risk. Although every precaution will be made to ensure the safety and protection of both buyer and the livestock, the auctioneer and the sellers accept no responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of an accident or loss of property.

DELIVERY: Delivery will take place in the first two weeks of April, where we will do our best to get your your bull(s) as close to you as possible, If you are unable to have your bull delivered by April 20th they can remain at Spruce View where we will continue to develop your bull at a cost of $3/day and at buyer’s risk (insurance suggested). You are required to pick your bull up if you choose this option.

SIGHT UNSEEN: For sight unseen purchases contact Shane Castle or any of the Sale Staff and they will make every attempt to pick a bull that suits your needs.
