Back this year by popular demand are the Ten X bulls. These cattle continue to amaze us with their overall performance and how well they respond to feed. A new sire group of bulls this year is the Hoover Dam bulls.

Hoover Dam excels in carcass traits, calving ease and is a bred leader in heifer retention, all backed by big time accuracy. The power

and performance of the Butler bulls is back in the pen and sure look good backed with loads of substance and volume.

2016 is shaping up to be a great year and we are off to a heck of a start with great weather that was much needed to stretch the feed out. A new year brings new optimism and that includes an awesome set of bulls that are found at Spruce View this spring. These big, burly, stout bulls would be a Spruce View signature, that’s the kind they like to produce. The pen is just that with fresh exciting genetics for the repeat customers, there are more AAR Ten X calves that look outstanding, Hoover Dam bulls are also an interesting group that comes off the first calf heifers, born light and grow is exactly what they have done. WHAT IS AN EPD?

Terms & Conditions

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are genetic predictions producers can use when making selection decisions. These values are available on performance animals from breed associations. It is important to understand you cannot compare EPDs between breeds, only within a breed. A buyer is always advised to use more than just the EPDs regardless of accuracy when making purchase decisions.

TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash, cheque, or previously arranged financing. Settlement is to be made following the completion of the sale, to the clerks of the sale. Animals will not be released until settlement is made.

All monies are in Canadian funds.

An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the genetic merit of an animal using relevant performance and pedigree information. EPDs are expressed in the units of measure. For example, birth weight is expressed in pounds, and rib-eye area is expressed in square inches.

DISPUTES: Bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved in a dispute. If there is no advance by either party, the buyer will be the person from which the auctioneer received the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final in these cases.

EPDs come from performance data. Producers submit data on their cattle. From this data, researchers look at the differences between animals raised in the same environment (contemporary groups) and ascertain the portion of that difference that is due to genetics (heritability). Also included in this is how the different traits relate to each other and interact together (correlations). They can then directly compare genetic differences among animals using the pedigree information contained in the CHA and AHA registries. The result is a value that can be directly compared between animals and across environments, an EPD.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: All announcements made from the block will take precedence over any printed material from the catalogue. Therefore buyers should pay close attention for such announcements.

EPD’S USED IN THIS CATALOGUE Calving Ease EPD (CE) - calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted.

Birth Weight EPD (BW) - is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birth weight EPDs usually indicates more calving difficulty.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW) - reflects progeny growth differences up to 205-days.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW) - reflects progeny growth differences through to 365-days.

Milk EPD (Milk) - indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning.

Total Maternal EPD (TM) - also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the Weaning Weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205-Days and combines the genetics for pre-weaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny.

Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE) - represents the ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first calf heifers, when compared to daughters of other sires. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing daughters with a higher probability of unassisted calving. (important to understand is that zero is not “average”)

BREEDING GUARANTEE: All cattle are sold as sound and right and sell with a “Responsible Breeder’s Guarantee of Satisfaction”. In the unlikely event of a dispute, the regular sale terms and conditions, standard with the Canadian Angus Association shall apply.

SOUNDNESS EVALUATION: All bulls will have passed evaluation for physical & reproductive soundness by a veterinarian. All bulls will be semen tested prior to delivery and will have be accompanied, at time of delivery, by a semen certificate that meets or exceeds the CAA standard of 70% .

RISK: Ownership risk to the purchaser commences when the auctioneers hammer falls. Insurance is available sale day.

LIABILITIES: All people attending the sale do so at their own risk. Although every precaution will be made to ensure the safety and protection of both buyer and the livestock, the auctioneer and the sellers accept no responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of an accident or loss of property.

DELIVERY: Delivery will take place in the first two weeks of April, where we will do our best to get your your bull(s) as close to you as possible, If you are unable to have your bull delivered by April 20th they can remain at Spruce View where we will continue to develop your bull at a cost of $3/day and at buyer’s risk (insurance suggested). You are required to pick your bull up if you choose this option.

SIGHT UNSEEN: For sight unseen purchases contact Shane Castle or any of the Sale Staff and they will make every attempt to pick a bull that suits your needs. Resale of animals following the sale constitute a separate transaction and releases the original seller from their obligation.
