Frank Strimbold

We would like to dedicate this years sale to Frank (Dad).

Frank & Dianne purchased their first registered Black Angus in 1965 and quickly grew very fond of the “Black Angus” cattle. Poplar Meadows was chosen as their herd name as the meadows where the cattle spent their summers was surrounded by Poplar trees. Frank was instrumental in starting many Angus herds in BC. He also spent over 20 years as a director of the BC Angus Association as well as as the Chairman. He was elected to the Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors from 2006 - 2012.

Frank & Dianne received an award at the 2014 Bulkley Valley Exhibition for being long time participants at the fair (40 + years). 2015 marked 50 years as an Angus producer/member. Dianne was presented with the 50 year award from the Canadian Angus Association at Frank’s Celebration of Life ceremony.

Generations of the Strimbold family continue on Frank’s legacy and love for Black Angus cattle. Both his daughters, Tanya and Lia have Angus herds in Houston. Tanya and Monty are proud to carry on the Poplar Meadows Ranch name!

Welcome to our 6th Northern Alliance Bull Sale. The Northern Alliance sale group is presenting a group of bulls hard to beat anywhere in Canada. One of the most important things we as a group do is stand behind our bulls. We have continually received good feedback from buyers since inception of this sale.

With the number of bulls in the sale and different sire groups represented we are confident you will find a breeding bull to meet your needs.

The breeding program at Red Moon sticks to the fundamentals – calving ease, structure, maternal traits, moderate frame and performance. We have a selection of Red Angus bulls this year that will do that and protect the investment you’ve made in your females. Calving ease and maternal traits are the mainstay of our operation! 85% of the bulls in our pen were born in January; they will be 16 to 17 months when you turn out. This year’s offering is a very even set of bulls.

A new AI sire we have used in this group is Red Six Mile Grand Slam 130Z, he is making a name for himself siring Red Six Mile Signature 295B the Reserve Grand champion this past fall at Agribition. There are five sons in the sale, which possess that herd sire look. The spread from birthweight +.07 to +100 yearling weight is impressive. The Yearling weight Epd is in the top 6%, top 6% for milk, top 8% for yearling weight and top 1% for marbling. This bull provides performance without sacrificing calving ease. Average birth weights on bull calves 84 lbs and 81 on heifer calves.

Red MRLA Economy 810 has proven to give us calving ease, structural correctness and performance. The average birth weights on his Progeny are 80 lbs. on bull calves and 76 lbs. on heifer calves. The adjusted average yearling weight on his bull calves is 1084lbs. Females are 826 lbs. His calves are vigorous and have that Angus will to live, getting up and going with in minutes. The calving ease with this bull is exceptional without giving up performance.

His first group of females we have, just finished calving, done in a two week period with absolutely no calving issues.

We are impressed with the udders and mother ability on these first calvers. He also put exceptional feet under his calves showing a good amount of heel. The average scrotal on his bull calves last year was 38 cm, well above the requirements of Angus breeding bulls. Economy was purchased as a mature bull and to date has 202 registered calves on the books of the Canadian Angus Association, more registrations equals better reliability of the bulls EPDs. His progeny have gone on to be herd sires in other pure bred herds. This bull is ranked in the top 1 percent for calving ease and top 3 percent for milk. Great pedigree backed with Pasquale, New Trend and Rambler 1000.

Red Brox Zander 11Z was used exclusively on heifers. Average birth weights have been 79 lbs on bull calves and 71 lbs on heifers with adjusted weaning weights being 694 lbs. and 1110 lbs. on yearling bulls. Ranked in the top 8% for calving ease with in the breed. Check his pedigree, the sire Red Anchor T Hitch is producing some great mother cows.

Red Goad Chattahoochee 110’3 has three progeny in the sale. His birthweight was 79 lbs, averaging 85lbs on his bull calves and 76 lbs on heifer calves. The calves are thick. Tom also showed a heifer from this bull this past summer and she stood in the top of her class at two shows. We have retained a group of heifer calves for the future.

All of our bulls are fed at home, we feed a balanced ration and locally grown dry mixed forage. The bulls are fed to promote healthy growth and development. The pen is on a complete vaccination program; including, express 5, and protection for foot-rot, by sale day all will have had their booster shots and ivermectin. We weight the bulls every 28 days, weather permitting, weights may be viewed on our web site www.redmoonangus.com. The pen is fed by hand and is familiar with people walking amongst them. They are not over conditioned and will be ready to work the day you turn them out. As, always delivery arrangements can be made on your purchases.

Our first calf from Red six Mile Grand Slam 130Z.Moon 18C is a performance calf being in top 20 % for yearling weight and top 20 % for milk. Longevity is a big factor in this bull’s pedigree. The Dam is from our Canadian Red Angus Champion Bull, Red Northline Rev 341R. The Grand Dam has produced 14 calves and is still here! This is the dams 6th calf with heifers averaging 85 lbs and bulls averaging 82 lbs. Son’s working for Riske Creek and Rim Rock Ranch, daughter retained in our herd. Really good calf! 71 lbs at birth and 801 lbs on November 6. From a first calving heifer her BW 72 lbs. Bull calf ranks in the top 3 % for calving ease and still maintains good performance EPDs. Jan 30 weigh was 1142 lbs. Grand Dam was purchased by Tom from Six Mile Angus of Saskatchewan as an investment for his future in the cattle business. The bull should surely pay his way. We can’t say enough about the calving ease from the Red MRLA Economy 810 Bull.

From a first calving Odin daughter. This calf hit the ground at 88 lbs and weighed in on Nov 6th at 861 lbs his January 30 2016 weight was 1213 lbs. ADG 4.14, pretty impressive from a first calf heifer. The Sire Red Brox Zander 11Z has been used successfully on our Angus heifers for three years. The dam’s birth weight was 100 lbs. Birth weight averages on the Zander Bull have been 78 lbs with weaning weights on the bull calves of 694 lbs and weaning weight on heifer calves of 670 lbs. With the heavier birthweight on the Dam side we would recommend using this performance calf on mature cows.

Welcome to the 6th Annual Northern Alliance Bull Sale. We are pleased to offer you 70 Angus bulls.

Never has there been a more important time to select top quality herd bulls. With the increased value of calves a live calf and one that pushes down the scale means more money in your pocket. Along with eye appeal and conformation we believe the use of data collection such as 50K, ultrasound and EPDs will provide our bull customers with the best possible tools in selecting a Poplar Meadows herd sire. Our cattle are bred and raised in BC so will not have to adapt to your environment. We have strived hard to bring our customers breed leading genetics. This is the second year we have incorporated embryo transplant in our herd and you will notice several full brothers in the sale.

Bulls were vaccinated in April and September. We will also have the bulls vaccinated with Fusogard foot rot vaccine prior to the sale. Our entire cow herd is vaccinated yearly as well. Bulls will be semen tested and ready to go to work.

I had an amazing year with numerous supreme wins, top carcass winner, pen show champions, but the difficult part was not having my Dad to share it with. The entire proceeds will go to the society and a tax receipt will be given to the purchaser. Mom and Dad purchased this bulls sire from their very good friends Jill and Wayne Hughes of Tafika Angus. Welcome to the 2016 Northern Alliance Bull Sale. Calving is well under way and the weather is cooperating for a nice change. This year I have brought 7 strong yearling bulls to Vanderhoof. The bulls are correct and they move well. They are backed by functional productive cow families that work.

Four of the bulls are sired by Cudlobe C C & 7 55Y; a bull I purchased out of the Cudlobe herd in southern Alberta. He is a moderate framed, smooth made bull with good breed character. He walks on a very correct foot and is very fluid when on the move.

55Y is quiet to handle and tends to pass this on to his calves. His first heifers calved last year; they are moderate with tidy udders. His heifers milked well and bred back to calve this year. They are quiet and mothered their calves well. 55Y’s life time birth weight averages on his calves are 85 lbs on his heifers and 92 lbs on his bull calves.

Three of the bulls are sired by Marberly Zoran 20Z. 20Z is sired by Final Answer a strongly maternal bull with great calving ease, and his dam is sired by BR Midland; who is known for his growth. I mostly used 20Z on heifers and young cows. His calves came easily and were very vigorous. I am calving his first heifers this year and they are moderate cows with nice udders and small teats. 20Z’s life time average birth weights on his calves are 76 lbs on the heifer calves and 90 lbs on the bull calves.

The bulls are being fed alongside Jim and Shirley Moon’s bulls at Red Moon Angus. The bulls and their dams have been fully vaccinated and are guaranteed to be BVD PI free. Welcome to the 6th Annual Northern Alliance Bull Sale! It is a pleasure working with the other contributors.

2015 was quite a year for us-experiencing some of the worst things ever as well as some of the best.

In March we lost my Dad, Frank Strimbold, my inspiration, my confidant and my friend… Our lives changed forever. I am so blessed though that I had him around for 48 years and he taught me so much about life and Angus cattle!

We, also, had another very dry year and our calves weaned off the lightest ever. They had to cover a lot of ground between grass and water holes. They have come on well though on feed. We weaned them on the 5th of October and they have been on a grain ration and free choice grass/mix hay. They will be vet checked and semen tested prior to the sale.

As for the good in 2015- we sold one 4-H steer in 2014 to a local member, Carli Wardrop, and she had the Reserve Champion steer at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition with him! He was a Game Day steer. And the Game Day heifer calf we sold to Tyrell McEwen at the 2014 Pacific Invitational Sale went on to be the Champion 4-H female at the BV Exhibition as well. Carli’s Game Day heifer was Reserve Champion 4-H female! At the Burns Lake Fair, Carli’s Kodiak cow, she purchased as a calf from us, and her fancy Game Day heifer calf won Champion Angus female and went on to be Supreme Champion at the show! And to top off the year, we had the high selling female at the Pacific Invitational Female Sale with another Game Day bred heifer- who sold to Border Butte Angus in Alberta.

Also, a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to my sister, Tanya Belsham and her crew on an amazingly successful show run in 2015/2016! You are carrying on Dad’s legacy and he would be so proud of all your accomplishments!

We purchased 3 new herd sires last year and are excited to see how they cross with our cows! Two are Unanimous sons from Peak Dot Ranch and a Musgrave Foundation son from Border Butte Angus.

Tori’s last calf out of her 21N cow. 21N was kindly given to her

by Gar and Marg Garton as a calf. She lost 21N shortly after she calved & we were able to put this guy on another cow. 45C is the only Right Time son we have in the sale. His offspring have lots of performance and are easy calving. We sold the sire to Hatch Creek Ranch last spring. The dam has had 6 bulls sell through bull sales and a daughter to Poplar Meadows. 21N really has funded Tori’s horse addiction over the years! Again, just a March calf.

Bids and Disputes Every animal will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will re-open between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the persons from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such a matter will be final.

Announcements Any corrections or announcements made from the block on sale day will take precedence over the catalogue.

Purchasers Risk Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as it’s sold or as soon as the auctioneers gavel falls.

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD):

Is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Birth Weight EPD (BW):

Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW):

Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW):

Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk):

Is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Total Maternal EPD (TM):

The expected overall difference in weaning weight pounds of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero EPD for total maternal. The total materanl EPD is a measure of both growth and milking ability and is an indication of the size of calf a bull’s daughter will wean. The maternal milk EPD is combined with half of the weaning growth EPD to produce the total maternal EPD. This is a prediction of the total genetic influence that a sire will have on his daughter’s progeny.

Calving Ease Direct (CED):

Is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM):

Is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

How Do I Use EPDs?

Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd. You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight (WW) EPD of +10 and Bull B has a WW of +60. What does that mean? How can you use those EPDs to choose between the two bulls? If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50). So, if you were interested in producing heavier calves, Bull B would be the one to choose. Remember, EPDs evaluate group average and offspring’s performance. They cannot predict individual performance or weights.
