What could the de-carbonisation of a home look like?
That was the question placed forward seeking a design response.
The response came into fruition in the form of a CLT box made to fit an existing structure. There is a saying where something fits like a glove, indicating the perfect fit. There was a juxtaposition between the old and the new structures, not only aesthetically but also in construction. And it is exactly this that made it the answer for the de-carbonisation of a home. A lot of attention was been paid to the detailing of the sustainable wooden structure.

A house should be a home, a space in which we life is celebrated, where memories are made and are truest selves can be expressed. It should be a space in which we find warmth, comfort, safety and peace.
It is a place that is deserved by everyone.
Similarly, the places where we live are also places for interaction and community, where all walks of life can come together in all ways and my hope is that social housing in South Africa will become exactly this, an opportunity to create greater cohesion. Humane, caring and conscious design of the highest order is what should be at the core of all social housing.

Placing migrant workers in the center of Rotterdam, close to key logistical hubs such as the Port of Rotterdam and major transport networks, offers numerous advantages. Proximity to urban infrastructure ensures easier access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and social welfare, supporting the well-being of migrant communities. Being embedded in the city also fosters cultural exchange and social integration, allowing migrants to build meaningful relationships within the broader urban fabric. Central placement stimulates local economies by encouraging spending in nearby businesses, creating a mutually beneficial dynamic between migrants and the city.
A new head office for the Balobi Group that trades directly out of the harbour port offers a unique connection between office management and habour operations as well as panoramic views of the marina. The new offices have offered new life to what was previously the home of the Indigo Moon restaurant which had succumbed to a devastating fire in early 2019. The 1800m2 space has been transformed to offer a vibrant workspace with a large open plan office, private consulting rooms and training facilities. The office planning makes use of the buildings orientation to maximize natural light to create a work environment that is conducive for both productivity and well-being.

What was previously a restaurant became new offices. At the time of inception it was decided to relocate the new offices of Balobi to Port St Francis for a number of reasons.
The site overlooked the harbour operations and their refrigeration units sat below the previously burnt down restaurant, which made this an ideal location.
The client brief was to create layers of area’s where access control was at the forefront. The requirement was that there were limited automated access control points and that most of the access control was done visually.

A new office design for JAM* architecten in Amsterdam North. This business space is part of the Tolhuiskade residential building. The new office is adjacent to the quay of the Tolhuiskanaal providing exceptional views.
The team received the shell where the main task is finishing of the interior and creating a space that will be representative of JAM*. The main focus of this project was creating a space that reflects the ethos of JAM*, Spaces that Matter. Each space was carefully thought of, from design to technical resolution and how these spaces connect and communicate with one another.
An aspect that was carried out throughout the process was how can this communication be achieved in design and detailing.

Tanzania’s architecture, with its long history of diverse influences, is rooted in its traditional and cultural practices, shaped by the functional needs of the occupants and built in celebration of nature and everyday life. Drawing upon these ideas, the included design encompasses a series of ‘boxes’ arranged in a manner that facilitates nodes of activity, provides a sense of both privacy and connectedness between each family and in turn enables the opportunity for a unique individualization of the spaces wherein each family member is able to explore the spaces as their own, within the collected whole. The lines between social and private life are clearly defined but carefully intermingled so as to maintain the essence of traditional and cultural family life.
Neither simply a house nor a dwelling, the proposed project creates a home; a space filled with the essences of personal and familial life and which concretises feelings of intimacy, identity and protection.
Location: Tanzania Competition | December 2019 - March 2020
A - Living Room & Indoor Kitchen
A large covered open living area with a built fire place to allow for wood fire cooking. Generous openings allowing fresh air to traveling through cooling the space down while allowing natural light to bath the space with uninterrupted views of the landscape.
Adjacent to the living area is the indoor kitchen with a biogas stove that operates off of animal droppings. Large openings have been designed to allow for a well ventilated space while achieving a visual connection with all surrounding buildings. The kitchen has a direct connection with the water collection system, crops storage and small animal coop.
