01 VILLA VOLLEBREGT What could the decarbonisation of a home look like?

That was the question placed forward seeking a design response.

The response came into fruition in the form of a CLT box made to fit an existing structure. There is a saying where something fits like a glove, indicating the perfect fit. There was a juxtaposition between the old and the new structures, not only aesthetically but also in construction. And it is exactly this that made it the answer for the decarbonisation of a home. A lot of attention was been paid to the detailing of the sustainable wooden structure.

02 CONTAINER CITY A house should be a home, a space in which we life is celebrated, where memories are made and are truest selves can be expressed. It should be a space in which we find warmth, comfort, safety and peace.

It is a place that is deserved by everyone.

Similarly, the places where we live are also places for interaction and community, where all walks of life can come together in all ways and my hope is that social housing in South Africa will become exactly this, an opportunity to create greater cohesion. Humane, caring and conscious design of the highest order is what should be at the core of all social housing.

COMPRESSION + EXPANSION The design makes use of a steel structure which serves as the support skeleton to 15 container micro-apartments.

In order to add a touch of whimsy but also extend the focus that the project makes on community and interaction, the apartment blocks are suspended on steel columns with a ground floor that is completely free - allowing for the creation of a flowing public park and a design that appears to float just above.

As you approach the hard shell of building and enter into the core, the space explodes, revealing its volume. Harboring a culture of community, the multiple levels engage in a cross-directional conversation, with central courtyards providing space for movement, meeting, connection and exchange between the units and residents.

01. Insulated sandwich panel constructed from 102 x 38mm SA PINE rough sawn timber and 18mm structural OSB board top and sides and bottom interior closing with 11mm spruce board.

02. 100mm ISOTHERM insulation with R-Value of 2.33 held in place with polymide retaining disc with galvanized screw & plug.

03. Purpose made foldable top constructed from birch plywood as per joinery drawings.

03 BALOBI TRADING HEAD OFFICES A new head office for the Balobi Group that trades directly out of the harbour port offers a unique connection between office management and habour operations as well as panoramic views of the marina. The new offices have offered new life to what was previously the home of the Indigo Moon restaurant which had succumbed to a devastating fire in early 2019. The 1800m2 space has been transformed to offer a vibrant workspace with a large open plan office, private consulting rooms and training facilities. The office planning makes use of the buildings orientation to maximize natural light to create a work environment that is conducive for both productivity and well-being.

MEZZANINE - WAITING AREA

What was previously a restaurant became new offices.

At the time of inception it was decided to relocate the new offices of Balobi to Port St Francis for a number of reasons.

The site overlooked the harbour operations and their refrigeration units sat below the previously burnt down restaurant, which made this an ideal location.

The client brief was to create layers of area’s where access control was at the forefront. The requirement was that there were limited automated access control points and that most of the access control was done visually.

General Office looking to reception

04 LINTON PARK WINES Set within the breathtaking beauty of the Cape Winelands region, Linton Park currently comprises the original farm house built in 1809, the wine making facility, a restaurant and wine tasting venue. With a view towards incorporating a hospitality aspect to the wine farm, the owners took on an idea to design a proposal for a luxury tented camp and public venue to host conferencing and wedding events.

The design was inspired by the forest setting of the site, proposing the creation of a dramatically curved laminated timber canopy that spans over the functional spaces below. This iconic element evokes the sense of walking underneath the tree canopy, with lattice of timber beams overhead providing a protected outdoor environment bathed in dappled light. The reach of the canopy also allows the mass of the buildings to be kept smaller and appropriate for the context, with links and walkways connecting the various spaces and maintaining a spatial flow for guests to move around while protected from the elements. In juxtaposition to the warm wood texture of the canopy, the buildings themselves are clad in dark zinc sheeting and generous glass panels to recede into the background and allow the forest to define the setting.

The materials to be used would be dark grey metal cladding, timber and glass.

In doing so, the building would harmoniously blend with the forest’s colour pallette.

PUBLIC SPACES

CONCEPT IDEA The hotel is then broken up into different functional spaces.

These spaces are separate form the convention centre / wedding venue, however remain spatially connected to the hotel portion.

The concept of a public space under a canopy’ is then explored with a surface model over the spaces provided.

This surface then returns to the ground at strategic points is a tear drop form.

The individual spaces for both the hotel and the conference centre / wedding venue are then linked though common public spaces namely walkways, connecting corridors and plazas.

The conference centre and wedding venue is then placed next to the hotel, independent yet spatially linked.

The surface is then converted into a timber lattice grid which create the iconic sculptural form over the individual spaces for the hotel and the convention centre / wedding venue.

05 HOUSE JOREJICK ARCHSTORMING INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Tanzania’s architecture, with its long history of diverse influences, is rooted in its traditional and cultural practices, shaped by the functional needs of the occupants and built in celebration of nature and everyday life. Drawing upon these ideas, the included design encompasses a series of ‘boxes’ arranged in a manner that facilitates nodes of activity, provides a sense of both privacy and connectedness between each family and in turn enables the opportunity for a unique individualization of the spaces wherein each family member is able to explore the spaces as their own, within the collected whole. The lines between social and private life are clearly defined but carefully intermingled so as to maintain the essence of traditional and cultural family life.

Neither simply a house nor a dwelling, the proposed project creates a home; a space filled with the essences of personal and familial life and which concretises feelings of intimacy, identity and protection.

SITE PLAN

A - Living Room & Indoor Kitchen

A large covered open living area with a built fire place to allow for wood fire cooking. Generous openings allowing fresh air to traveling through cooling the space down while allowing natural light to bath the space with uninterrupted views of the landscape.

Adjacent to the living area is the indoor kitchen with a biogas stove that operates off of animal droppings. Large openings have been designed to allow for a well ventilated space while achieving a visual connection with all surrounding buildings. The kitchen has a direct connection with the water collection system, crops storage and small animal coop.

B - Bedrooms

Bedrooms with enough space to allow for 2 single beds, including dunk beds as well as a small cupboard and desk for studying. Large swivel doors when opened up create a seamless visual connection to the outdoors. These can be used to control the amount of sunlight and wind allowed in creating better thermal comfort.

C - Crop Storage

Adjacent to the kitchen is the crop storage which has plenty storage space to accommodate high yields of crop throughout the year.

D - Chicken & Duck Coop

The chicken & duck coop is located in the secondary court yard closely to the kitchen and crop storage. Roofed and covered in wire mesh creating a safe enclosure for the animals. The coop also includes timber boxes to create good living conditions for the animals , protected from bad weather.

E - Bedrooms F - Outdoor Fire Pit

At the center of the family home is a fire pit to celebrate tradition and the art of story telling. A built up earth wall creating a defined space which commemorates the rhythm of dance and song from the Iraqw tribe.

G - Court Yard 01

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

At the center of the bedrooms is a covered court yard where the family can gather outside while having protection from the sun. With built up seating that allows for laying down in the shade for an afternoon sleep or coming together as a family.

The second court yard is a central space for the collection of water, managing crops and attending to daily routines like washing of clothing.

Rain water harvesting 320m2 of roof area collecting 356 500L of water annually.

Cooling and shading Pergola covered area’s with the use of local trees to shade the communal area’s from the harsh direct sunlight.

Solar panels 4 x 330 watt hour solar panels powering lighting for each space and water pumps.

Natural air cooling, heating & ventilation Wind-catcher circulating cool air into each bedroom during hot seasons and hot air in the winters with the fire heating circulating air.

06 BEHOLD LODGE (winner)

Celebrating history, culture and nature, the design looks at integrating contemporary and vernacular architecture in a sensible way that brings the above to the foreground. The interacting roof volumes play an active role in creating an atmosphere of continuity and connectedness between context and building as one moves through the spaces.
