Community Shul: An Innovative and Caring Community

The Community Shul of Montecito and Santa Barbara is an innovative, embracing and spiritually based organization, always striving to create a warm and caring community. We provide intimate and creative religious training and celebrations for children and adults alike.

In the wider Santa Barbara community, we support educational programs and activities that build bridges between diverse groups to help increase understanding and provide opportunities for tikkun olam — the repair of the world.

Activities include: bi-monthly spiritual Shabbat morning service with prayers, song, and Torah study; monthly adult education opportunities; monthly Kaballah study sessions, often with guest teachers; special holiday celebrations such as Passover Seder, Sukkot, and Chanukah gatherings; and uniquely crafted B’nai Mitzvahs and other lifecycle events.

You and your family are always warmly welcomed to experience High Holidays, Shabbat, or any event with us. For more information please refer to the Shalom Santa Barbara Community Directory.

Religious School

The Community Shul of Montecito and Santa Barbara strives to provide students with a positive, dynamic, and fun experience that instills a love for Jewish thought, practice, and spirituality. We want our students to enjoy a sense of awe and wonder about the world.

The Jewish culture is vibrant and is nurtured by family and community. Therefore, we provide family and communityoriented experiences that enrich our knowledge and skills for making Jewishly informed decisions. We respect the choice of parents regarding the level of observance at home. Egalitarian practices convey the philosophy that men and women are equal partners in family, religion, and society. Classes mix art, dance, music, study, and hands-on activities, to give students a strong basis in Jewish literacy (holidays, traditions, Hebrew language, and stories), Jewish ritual practices, a personal understanding of God, the Jewish soul, and Jewish ethics.

Community Shul Religious School takes place on Mondays 3:30- 5:30 pm at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center.
