Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service.

Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

The Week of Sunday, August 29th •

Bible and Worship - Children's Ministry would love for families to check out our new Sunday morning program, which now meets every Sunday, including communion Sundays. The 9:30 and 11:00 hours of Bible and Worship are a mix of worship and Bible instruction for kids 4-years-old through 5th grade. Parents can check-in and pick up their children at the door just to the left of the library. Follow the signs.

Night of Worship - Mark your calendars as we, as a church family, come together for a night of worship and communion, Aug 29th at 5pm in the Family Life Center. We will lift our voices to sing, pray, and ask God to direct us.

GriefShare - GriefShare is a grief recovery support group where you can find help and healing for the hurt of losing a loved one. You'll find a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life's most difficult experiences. You don't have to go through the grieving process alone. REBOOT - REBOOT is a faith-based combat trauma healing course designed to address the spiritual wounds of war. Combat veterans are healing, divorce rates are dropping, medication abuse decreases, and suicide numbers are reduced at REBOOT locations across the country.

Pancake Breakfast & Car Wash - On Sept 25th from 7-11am, bring your car to be washed while you enjoy a pancake breakfast. It's our goal for every student to attend the Youth Choir Mission Tour without financial limitations. The students accomplish this by serving others to raise money.

Help these students learn the joy of serving both in our local congregation and through the Mission tour. Tickets will be on sale soon.

Philip’s Focus Part of Being a Disciple: Taking Care of Our Sheep?

What makes my heart sink faster than any other news I hear? I can answer this question easily. When I receive news that someone is disappointed that the church has not responded in their time of need. I always feel sadness when this happens. You do too! I know we all feel grief when this happens.

In this Beacon article, let me raise three questions. First, why do we miss needs? Second, how can we improve? Third, what plans are in place to care for our sheep?

First Question: Why do we miss needs?

The most common reason is we did not know. Not just an oversimplification; it is the prevailing reason that we did not know.

Another occasional reason is that we are told things verbally when our information bank is crowded, like Sunday morning worship. Without the information written down, it can be lost by Monday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately, this is an unintended consequence. However, I am telling you this does regretfully happen but is never by design. Another reason we miss important news about our congregation is the messenger forgets. A person with a need tells someone to tell us, and the information is dropped before it reaches us. When this happens, we may hear after the fact or not at all. Also, another prevailing reason is some people prefer to keep their needs private. In such cases, we honor the request.

Second Question: How can we improve on caring for our sheep?

When we learn of a need, let the church know. Having all "hands on deck" is still our best method of helping with this important area. The Covid-19

era has been extremely challenging to understand all the specific needs of congregation members. Due to Covid concerns, many members have not worshiped in person for over a year. As a result, there are numerous things we do not know about our people. Therefore, you will often learn information about congregation members before a pastor. This is normal.

Please pass the information along so we make sure it is followed up.

Let me highlight, if congregation members especially want a pastor, please let us know. Our pastors' cell phone numbers are published to make it easy for our congregation. Please do not hesitate to call or text us when a pastor is requested. If you do not know which pastor to contact, feel free to contact me.

Of all times to care, we all want to live out our discipleship of loving and caring in this unprecedented time of need with Covid, economic challenges, and divisions in our country. More than ever, we need to care for one another in the church!

Final Question: What plans are forming to better care for our congregation?

How are we going to love and care better? First, this is a team effort. It is beyond just the pastors. In this Covid-19 era, we all need to STEP UP, for caring does take a village. Second, I will be forming a new team of laity and clergy to help us respond to what appears to be an emerging tsunami of needs in this Covid-19 era. If you would like to help with this new team, let me know. Third, in this latest wave of Covid-19, I will be resuming "checkin" phone calls with our members. My goal is to have every person connected with Shalimar UMC receive a "check-in" call by the end of September. The call will come from one of our other pastors or me.

Fourth, the old "grape vine method" still works. Please let us know about the needs of our congregation when they become known to you.

Finally, Covid-19 has been on the rise again! As we care for our congregation, I invite you to read an update from our Church Administrator, Scott Newbold. Scott will update our current Covid protocol as a church. We continue to seek to follow the guidelines of the Center for Disease Control. (CDC) It is a unique time, and posting these guidelines is another way we care for our congregation!

We will get through this time! Thanks for being the congregation you are!

Our caring for one another is a part of our discipleship! Let's seek to follow Jesus and care for His sheep!

SPLASH OF JOY I STUDY WILL BEGIN AUGUST 18TH

We are so excited to get back to study after a summer break.

All of you ladies are invited to come to study the book of Haggai (which is only 38 verses long). This Old Testament study, TAKE COURAGE, by Jennifer Rothschild, will show us how the prophet Haggai reminded the Jewish people that they could take courage and work because God was with them. We will learn together how to walk confidently in our callings, stay motivated when obstacles make us want to quit, and defeat discouragement through God's presence. We meet from 9:30-11:00, and the location on our campus will be announced later. We will provide childcare with reservation only!! Books will be available for purchase on the first day of this 7-week study. Questions may be referred to Sara Michaelson 850-865-3343.

Also, Melanie Bandy will be leading a Zoom class from the same book and same dates. If you are interested in doing the study by zoom, please contact Melanie, melaniejbandy@gmail.com, and order your book if you are not able to pick it up at the church.

Jude, Contending for the Faith in Today’s Culture Jackie Hill Perry Have you ever wondered just how much God can pack into one small book of the Bible? Well, join us as we explore the book of Jude, a one-chapter book with only 25 verses. There is a lot that God wants to reveal to us about contending for faith in a world of unbelief while protecting us from falling into the same deceptions that have negatively affected both the church and our culture. In this 7-session study, Jackie Hill Perry will help us learn to recognize God’s Word as an anchor in the ever-shifting cultural climate, to discover your God-given identity in a world of deception, and to see how this small, obscure book in Scripture still speaks to the church today.

SPLASH OF JOY II will begin this study on August 25, 2021.

We meet every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30, participating in both small and large group settings. We will meet in your 207 in the Family Life Center.

The young adult ministry at Shalimar UMC is tailored for those ages 18 -35. We hope to create a place where you feel welcomed, heard, and reenergized. In whatever stage of life you find yourself, we will have an opportunity for you to find community, be surrounded and supported by others, and walk through life with others. We will have small group Bible study and discussion, worship nights, fun activities and trips, as well as opportunities to make a difference in our community. We hope you will come and be a part.

REVIVE: Join us on Monday nights from 7-8 at the Cross Corner Fellowship Hall for Bible study and discussion. We will go back to our Wesleyan roots and have a time to meet together, listen to one another, pray for each other, and walk through life together.

COLLECTIVE: Every 2nd Monday night we will meet from 7-8 at Cross Corner for a time of worship. We will have music led by other young adults from our group and Pastor Matt will share a lesson with us. We will have food and activities on this night and provide an avenue to invite new friends to join us and create a more casual environment.

UNITED: United are the times that we will be out in the community either united together having fun or united in service to our community. From Taco Tuesday’s to boat days, and from helping our church to helping in the community we will find ways to be active and United around Shalimar.

Kidz Club is for students kindergarten - 5th If you can come at 5:00, join us for supper.

If you want to eat at home, we start at 5:30.

We have been enjoying choir, games, crafts along with our weekly Bible devotion time! If the weather allows, we even have time for the playground and “Gaga Ball.” We will be preparing a full Christmas Musical and will be signing up for parts soon. Even if you don’t like to speak on stage, we need children to help paint and build props and sets. We have more children every week, and we would love to have you join us!

Bible and Worship is for 4-year-olds - 5th grade Our new format for Sunday mornings is going very well. We gather for worship and then divide into age groups for our Bible Study. We have two sessions: 9:30-10:30 and 11:00-12:10. Some children come to both, and the sessions are different enough to have double the fun.

I am happy to report that we have volunteers for Wednesday evening and the 9:30 session on Sunday mornings. We always welcome additional adults and would love to have you be a part of our team.

We do need more volunteers at the 11:00 hour on Sundays. If you could spare one week out of the month or would like just to come and observe, we would love to have you. If you would like to lead a group, there are materials ready to make your own! If you can’t prepare a lesson, we need help supporting the Lead teachers and children.

John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement had 3 general rules that he hoped everyone who called themselves Methodist would strive to achieve. Join us for 7 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm, as we look at each of these rules and how we can apply these great teachings to our daily lives! It is a great way to learn more about our Wesleyan heritage as well as some practical ways we strive to be more like Christ in the world today! Led by Rev. Matt Langford in room 207.

After a year of Covid 19 lockdowns, who are ready to get active again in the name of the Lord?! Join us for a Run for God study! Even if you've never run before, you can join our class and learn everything from picking out the right shoes to completing your first 5K with us in November at Shalimar UMC! The Run for God Challenge is a guide to running and a 12-week training plan aimed at running a 5K, but with a Christian focus. The 5K Challenge introduces runners to the parallels of faith and fitness. The workout plans, discussion questions, and Bible verses make it both a practical resource and workbook for individuals and groups, especially new runners. Run for God is for all levels of runners, even those who have never run. Learn to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ while understanding the parallels of running and faith. Blessings for Children For the Children When a group of us gathered at the church in the fall of 2018 to talk about what we believed children in our community needed and how Christ would want us to serve them, our focus was always “for the children.” The services and items we share at Blessings for Children and even our name evolved from that mission statement. It is affirmed each time someone drops off a donation at the #10 house saying it’s something they think the children could use or enjoy, or graciously gives a financial gift to purchase the items we share, or when our volunteers walk through the door eager to serve. All of this is “for the children.” A few weeks ago, I was in line at Walmart with a cart full of items that were clearly “for the children” - school supplies, clothing, diapers. An elderly gentleman in a mobility scooter in the line next to me asked me why I had so many items.

I explained about our Shalimar UMC’s mission ministry, and he dug around in his pocket and pulled out a crumpled bill and reached out to me with a true twinkle in his eyes and said, “For the children!”

If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the

lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance.

• Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the

church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.

Prayer Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.

Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. We are excited to announce the prayer list can now be accessed on the website or app. Please call the office for the password to this page.
