Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service.

Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Ash Wednesday - On Feb 17th, we will have a drive-through event at 7am, a service in the Sanctuary at 12pm, and a service in the gym at 6pm for Ash Wednesday. Both services will have options for touch or a no-touch way to participate. For those watching through live stream, there are suggestions online of things you can use to participate at home.

Lent Discipleship Opportunities - We have multiple ways you can draw closer to God during the season of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. You'll find all of these opportunities listed on our website by clicking the Lent Banner at the top of the webpage. We have two Tuesday Bible studies: one on Zoom at noon and one in-person at 6pm. There are also two Think Tanks to help us move closer to our goal of 1,000 in discipleship weekly. These are on Monday at 6pm and are limited to 12 persons per group. Confirmation: Confirmation starts this Sunday at 9:30 in the youth rooms. It's not too late to get involved. Pastor David would like to talk with any student or parent who wants to learn more. Confirmation Sunday will be March 21st at 11:07.

Philip’s Focus In Praise of our Ministry Teams In previous weeks of Beacon articles, I have praised our congregation, staff, and lay leadership. In this article, I want to lift up some additional ministry teams and offer praise for their good ministry.

There is only so much praise space each week, so I have broken these praise articles into sections. The focus this week is ongoing ministry teams in our church during this past unforgettable COVID-19 year.

We are blessed by Splash of Joy study leaders Sara Michaelson and Cathie Buckman! What a joy it is to see so many ladies in study each Wednesday at 9:30. Some ladies gather to meet in person, and some by zoom meeting in several locations over our campus for social distancing. If you are on campus on Wednesday, there is quite a “buzz” of energy and ministry when the ladies gather. If you have been looking for a women’s ministry, they would love to have you in person or by zoom. You can contact Sara or Cathie if you are interested.

Our Sunday school teachers for adults, youth, and children, are far too many to name! The classes have had different journeys during this strange year. In the last couple of months, more of these classes are again meeting in person. The Sunday school small groups have persevered in different ways. Some have continued by zoom and now in-person. Others delayed and now have resumed. I am grateful for the faithfulness of teachers and classes navigating through the chaos.

Hopefully, our Sunday school will emerge stronger out of all this craziness. Maybe it is time for you to renew to a Sunday school class!

Our classes always welcome newcomers! Please let us know if you are ready to become a part of the Sunday school, and we will help you find a class.

Where would our church be without the active participation of so many Stephen Ministers walking alongside those who need encouragement in this tumultuous season? The Stephen Ministry handbook says, “Stephen Ministry offers a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members to provide high-quality, one to one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties.” Our Stephen Ministers are trained to help in times of isolation, sadness, major medical issues, infertility, divorce, end of life, terminal illness,

life transitions, military deployment, and the aftermath of a crisis. I cannot imagine all the Tsunami of needs in our congregation and community in the present and aftermath of COVID-19. Do you need a Stephen Minister? We have an army of trained volunteers to walk with you. A special thanks to our Stephen Ministry team leaders Sara Michaelson, Cathie Buckman, and Amanda Harris for navigating forward in this time.

We have a “truckload” of caring that goes on through our congregation. Our REBOOT has continued to reach the military and their families who need extra love and grace following traumatic events while serving our Country. We are so blessed to have Deb Hutto and Jeanne Racquier give leadership to this ongoing ministry through our church! We appreciate Brenda Ray and her card ministry and Marilyn Canon for the Threads of Love prayer shawl ministry. Nancy Kahrs continues to lead GriefShare for persons who have experienced loss during this time of the pandemic. This ministry has offered new hope for those stuck in the depths of the pit of grief. Kelly Bethea has been a stalwart and champion of MOPS for a long time. The care of Mothers of Preschoolers has long made an impact of love and mentoring for young mothers. All these ministries have required navigating during these uncertain times. Our caring as a church extends through all these expressions and distinctive ministries.

Again, I apologize in advance for glaring oversights in this article. We have so many leaders visible and behind the scenes to thank. I missed so many persons and ministries. Hopefully, I will assimilate another report this year, thanking those I have missed this time.

When you see someone serving at Shalimar UMC, please take a moment to thank them. Pray for them! Encourage them! The Apostle Paul says as a portion of Philippians 4:8, “if there is anything worthy of praise, think of these things.” In this spirit, I just wanted to thank our congregation, staff, lay leadership, and lay ministry leaders! Communication Update Did you notice that the Shalimar UMC App changed this week? If not, check it out. shalimar-umc.org/app We're always trying to make our methods of staying connected more effective.

Currently, about two-thirds of our church congregation interacts with us through technology. Our goal is to help everyone (in-person and online) participate in all aspects of our church life.

If you open the church app, you'll see a "Worship Online" button. Here, you'll find all of our online worship services. If you want to watch worship on your TV, the easiest way to do so is through YouTube.

If you have a smart TV, you should have the YouTube app. Open the app and search Shalimar UMC. Be sure to subscribe, so it's easier to find next time. We livestream to YouTube every service.

Back in the church app, if you click the "What's Happening" option, you'll find the Church Life, Major events, Philip's articles, other updates, and a list of our Online Events. You can find a list of every church activity by clicking Events at the bottom of the app.

The Online Community listing gathers everything we have for you online. We have hybrid groups as well. Find them in our adult activities. In a season when it is easy to be isolated, make a point to stay connected.

The attendance section is the same form you'll find within the Church Online pages.

We've made it a standalone item to make it easy for those checking-in while in worship in-person, from Facebook or YouTube. You can also submit a prayer request at the same time.

The giving button will bring you to our secure, online giving page. This is the same secured system used through our online campus Kiosk and our text to give. If you have questions, our finance office would be happy to assist you.

You can submit a prayer request any time, not just when you're checking into worship.

Prayer is essential to us, so we keep it front and center. Click the prayer button in the app to submit a prayer request or let us know about a hospitalization. We publish our prayer list weekly (excluding those who have requested confidential prayers). To honor people's privacy, we have password-protected this list. Pastor Philip and Lee Orr and leading two Think Tanks. As part of Philip's goal of reaching 1,000 weekly disciples, these two groups will allow you to come and share some big ideas to step out with God! The groups will start together in the FLC Gym. While combined, Philip will lead the group in some prayer and devotional reflections. Then, they will split up for focused conversation.

Philip will lead a discussion around church discipleship, and Lee will lead a conversation around evangelism.

Each group is limited to 12 people. Please contact each group leader directly if you wish to attend. Groups start February 15 @ 6:00 pm and go through March 22.

IT'S A NEW STUDY!!!! Splash of Joy I will begin a new study on Wed, Feb 10th, 9:30-11:30. This brand new video led study, Elijah, by Priscilla Shirer promises to meet us where we are living today. Elijah emerged as the voice of unapologetic truth during a time of national crisis and moral decline. His ministry was marked by tenacious faith and holy fire - the same kind you need in order to remain steadfast in current culture.

Would you be willing to commit to a 7-week study along with other women who are walking alongside you? Come join us in this adventure. We are so thankful for the volunteers helping keep our children's ministry running strong while looking for a new children's director.

Melanie Bandy, Chris Day, and Jennifer McRae are working as a three-woman team to ensure that our children have no interruptions to the programs they have come to know and love.

After School Camp/Summer Camp is looking to hire: • A Counselor/Driver - 25 yr. old and up with a FL Driver’s License or FL CDL endorsement to drive our afternoon bus routes!

• A Counselor - 16 yr. old and up to lead a classroom of children through scheduled activities.

After School Camp hours are part-time M-F from 1:30pm-6pm following the Okaloosa School Calendar.

Summer Camp is full/part-time M-F from 7:15am-6pm following the Okaloosa School Calendar Summer Break.

Week 43 was a light week for our visitors, but we had a lot of highlights! The previous Saturday, there was a huge Food Drop at the FORT Walton Beach Fairgrounds, which affected our visitors this week. We had a great surprise from our SCRAPBOOKERS, who meet once a month at Cross Corner.

They all brought in tons of food for the Bread House! It was a lovely surprise and very appreciated! It goes to show how the entire congregation gets behind helping those in need!

Blessings for Children Expanding How We Bless Others If you have been reading these Blessings for Children articles, you probably know by now what services we share with the children who visit our ministry each week, but you may not know the oversight for those visits. When we began this ministry in 2019, our start-up team determined that we would serve each child six times over 12 months. Those six visits would result in the child receiving a total of 18 new tshirts, underwear, and pairs of socks (3 per visit), 270 diapers (45 per visit), along with the personal care items and school supplies we also share. That protocol continues into our 3rd year, but this year we have expanded it to add four (4) additional visits during the 12 months for children in need of diapers or pull-ups. Having access to accessible laundry services can be difficult when you have financial needs. We believe providing the additional diapers for the littlest ones in the family will help ease that burden. We are always so grateful for how our church family supports this ministry. If you are looking for a way to help a family in our community, please consider donating diapers, pull-ups, or wipes (we give one pack of wipes with each set of diapers or pull-ups). It has been and continues to be our most pressing need.

• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate.

• Consider donating items we distribute to the children. Diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in particular) and pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash or soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesday from 11:30am3:30pm. Children's bibles and bible stories and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute! And Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to shop for needed items.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.

A Word From Our Librarian CHECK IT OUT It just happened again! After praying and pondering quite a while for a good/ appropriate/on point/Christian book to recommend to a hurting friend, the SUMC Library came up with just the right one! It was languishing among an entire shelf full of books designated on the shelf’s label, CHRISTIAN LIVING, just waiting for me to pick it up, read its summary comments, and check it out! In fact, several others might provide the inspiration and direction my friend was seeking. And then, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but another shelf across the room, this one labeled CHRISTIAN WOMAN. What? More offerings for my dear friend? Why should I be surprised? Our church library seems to offer more than a WIDE selection of healthy, goodfor-you books!

The checkout process was easy-peasy if a bit “old school” (No bar code scanning here!) All that was required was my name, phone #, and date!

But WAIT, there’s MORE…MUCH MORE! Just to the left of the checkout counter was an entire bookshelf FULL of CHRISTIAN FICTION! Be still my heart! Everyone can use a bit of good fiction these days, and the selection here was more than adequate. I had to help myself to a book or two and THEN, the neatest discovery of all! The adorable, comfy, and cozy CHILDRENS’ SECTION, complete with bean bags, cozy rugs, and an array of great kids’ books, for seemingly all ages! What a restful place. I can’t wait to bring the kids and some future time to browse the other shelves in our church LIBRARY! This place is a treasure! You MUST CHECK IT OUT sometime soon!

Prayer Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.

Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. We are excited to announce the prayer list can now be accessed on the website or app. Please call the office for the password to this page.
