Georgian is the most widely spoken of the Kartvelian languages and serves as the literary language or lingua Franca for speakers of related languages. It is the official language of Georgia and the native or primary language of 87.6% of its population. Its speakers today number approximately four million. Georgian is largely based on the Karelian dialect. The Georgian language is one of the oldest in the world. It has its alphabet and differs from any other language. According to one Georgian scholar, King Parnavaz created a Georgian script. The Georgian language is represented by 17 dialects and relevant sub-ethnoses. The evolution of the literary Georgian language is very clearly seen in the literary works that have come down to our time. Modern Georgian consists of 33 letters and has its own alphabet.
