Entertaining Outdoors July has arrived, and so have Minnesota’s beautiful summer nights! If you haven’t moved your indoor dinner parties outside yet, now is the time. Invite your guests over for an evening of fun, food, drink, and great conversation—out on the patio! Although it may sound as simple as moving your party from the dining room table to the patio table, there are some things you won’t want to forget when hosting your guests outdoors.

Consider using centerpieces, such as a vases of flowers, to keep the table cloth secured, place napkins underneath cups or plates to keep them from blowing away, and add an umbrella for shade. Be sure to keep those pesky bugs away, too. With food in the vicinity,

DIY CORNER Citrus Mint Salt Scrub Create your own natural, exfoliating scrub to use for a spa day at home, or give it away as the perfect homemade gift.

Ingredients:

• 2 cups coarse sea salt

• ¼ cup sweet almond or shea oil

• 15 drops grapefruit essential oil

• 10 drops peppermint essential oil

• Zest of one grapefruit

• Glass jar

Essential oils are nature’s bug repellents. What better way to deter bug bites than by using nature’s gifts rather than potentially harmful chemicals. Plants produce essential oils to repel bugs from eating their leaves and flowers. Plants that produce a higher percentage of compounds like eucalyptus citriodora and rose geranium make a pleasant-smelling deterrent to mosquitos, ticks, and flies. Fill up a diffuser with these essential oils or spray them into the air, around screen doors, or onto clothes to ward off the critters.

Instead of harmful chemicals, try this to keep those pesky bugs away. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes eucalyptus citriodora as effective as DEET or other chemical repellents. Application: add 40-70 drops of concentrate to a 4-oz spray bottle of water. Shake well and apply often, or mix 4 drops per tablespoon of lotion and apply as needed. Shaved Asparagus and Watermelon Radish This light, healthy and refreshing side dish will perfectly accompany most any summer lunch or dinner on the patio.

INGREDIENTS:

1 bunch of asparagus, shaved ⅓ cup parsley 2 watermelon radishes, julienned ½ cup Parmesan cheese ⅔ cup sliced almonds Golden raisins Dressing of choice Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:

Shave asparagus using a vegetable peeler and place into large bowl.

Add parsley, watermelon radishes, Parmesan, almonds, and golden raisins. Toss with dressing and season with salt and pepper to taste.
