NOMAD ST.Moritz 2025

The writings of 19th-century French geographer Élysée Reclus transformed my view of landscapes, especially the Alpine region His holistic geographic approach inspired me to explore the dynamic presence of nature. During my 2019 artist residency at Fundaziun NAIRS, I examined old Alpine photographs and drew from my hiking experiences in the Swiss National Park. My work displayed at NOMAD St Moritz highlights the movement in nature, expressed through rocks, glaciers, and mountain ranges

Centering on nature's shapes, my pieces include photographs, drawings, and mountain maps related to the Alpine landscape, allowing me to explore its essence and transformations Reclus' writings, particularly “Histoire d'une montagne,” deepened my understanding, revealing mountains as components in constant motion rather than static entities
To capture this ongoing motion, I enhance vintage photographs with gold leaf to highlight signs of movement, document tectonic activities through rock images, and use old topographical maps showcasing rapidly changing landscapes. I often integrate drawings with photographs to create a cartographic reference and combine accounting texts with mountain images, reflecting human vanities against nature's vastness
“These vintage mountain photos show fractures, boundaries between rock, moraine, and seracs It's into these fractures that I

Sasso Manduino / Paysages Cartes

The photographs of Sasso Manduino are printed in monochrome mode, highlighting only the shadows of the mountains. Isolated and colored, the selected reliefs become flattened shapes like the territories on a map: the landscape becomes a map.
“All that's left of the original photos are shadows and light In drawing them, it's their movement that's captured and highlighted, as if I were lifting the card of a moment of light.”

At the time this map was made, Nietzsche spent many summers in Sils Maria, where he wrote extensively, enchanted by the beauty of the place.
One of these poems, entitled Sils Maria, is affixed to the back of the work
“Hier saß ich, wartend, wartend, doch auf Nichts, Jenseits von Gut und Böse, bald des Lichts Genießend, bald des Schattens, ganz nur Spiel, Ganz See, ganz Mittag, ganz Zeit ohne Ziel.
Da, plötzlich, Freundin! wurde Eins zu Zwei
Und Zarathustra ging an mir vorbei ”
“Here I sat, waiting, waiting, - but for nothing, beyond good and evil, sometimes enjoying the light, sometimes the shadow, all play, all lake, all noon, all time without a goal.
Then, suddenly, friend! One became two - - And Zarathustra passed me by ”
“Everything here is in costant movement” (Massif du Mont Blanc)

Swedish textile artist in the early 20th-century She is remembered in particular for the weaving studio she opened in Båstad in 1919 and for the decorative rugs she produced from the 1910s to the 1930s, increasingly combining rural Nordic traditions with modernist trends. Her works are exhibited in some of the world's most important art museums, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Pompei sculptures, precariously balanced columns like those like those in a Hubert Robert painting, seem at first to us to have been architecture of the past. Yet they are the product, not of the ravages of time of experimentation, a jubilation of form and color that is characteristic of Pascale Risbourg's work: a whole fantasy landscape of vulnerable shadows
Pascale Risbourg's Pompeii candlesticks and vases are totems of nature's final triumph: their shapes are born of the creative accident that the artist provokes by jostling her forms, by heckling them. Letting error and material deformation express themselves
Her assemblages are the result of a long gestation period.
To begin with, she fashions a library of free-form shapes While letting the clay express itself in the firing, she uses all the techniques available to her (pitching, slab, colombin )
Then she invents her glazes: a recipe mixed with method, she juggles with her beautiful natural colors that seem directly extracted from Italian facades (cameos of brown, cognac, ochre, Sienna earth) and evoke the melancholy evocation of an Italian cobbled street, where time will have passed
Then it's time for the construction game, and here it's her great joy to take her time finding the balance: faced with her library of dozens of scattered pieces, which Pascale Risbourg sees as the vocabulary of a language yet to be invented, she makes, unmakes, starts again The stranger the form, the more it interests her
The exercise seems to serve to surprise herself
In the end, her caprices (capprici), with their fragile harmony, are in no way arbitrary: they are the result of a lifetime's research, that of an imperfect perfect that will lead her to the right form

Master Craftsman
Bernard Heesen (1958, NL) takes a unique approach to organic materials by crafting glass objects that exude a magical charm. Drawing inspiration from 17th to 19th-century encyclopedia illustrations, his detailed sculptures and vessels embody a sense of controlled chaos Heesen explores the thick, malleable qualities of hot liquid glass, likening it to heavy glue, which he uses to effortlessly unite contrasting aesthetics His creations are featured in several esteemed museum collections, including that of the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum.

A black mirror means emotional depth: Black can symbolize emotional depth and complexity
Choosing a black mirror may indicate a preference for a space for deep contemplation and emotional processing

Nienke Sikkema graduated at the Royal Academy of Arts the Hague after studying history and journalism at the University of Amsterdam. After graduating she started working at the Oude Horn, the glassblowing studio of Bernard Heesen. There she learned the craft of glassblowing and started executing her own designs in glass She describes her way of working as ‘playing with glass’. She lets the glass drip, stacks it and rolls it into a candleholder or sculpts animals with it As long as the glass allows it and the material doesn’t have to be forced. Shape, color, transparency and shim- mer, all the qualities that glass possesses are used in her designs. «Hopefully this way people will recognize the fun of the making process in the objects that emerge from it”
These whimsical cuckoo clocks are a delightful collaboration between Bernard Heesen and Nienke Sikkema. I was inspired to showcase them in Switzerland, as I have fond memories of the cuckoo clock my grandfather brought back from there. As a child, I was always mesmerized when the little bird emerged to greet me.

Guadalupe Quesada (1988, MX) dreams of a faraway planet on which her sculptures are alive. In one of her fantasies, aliens come to visit her studio and are shocked to find exact replicas of their homeplace’s flora and fauna. There is indeed an inter-ga- lactic feel to Quesada’s ceramics, but it is on our planet that she looks for inspiration : images of fungi, microbes, strange plants and under-sea creatures populate her atelier. Through a process of deconstruction and careful fragment selection, she assembles her own creatures and infuses them with a cheeky candy-flavoured sensibility. The result is a strange garden of fantastical entities, with pastel valves, cereal polyps, and bonbon coloured spores.
