The Travel Opportunity Assistance Fund “Being in Laos was by far one of the best moments of my life, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to have gone. The trip has helped me develop as a person and I will remember it forever.” These were the words shared by Erin Harris, a Shaker Heights student who received support from the Shaker Schools Foundation and our generous donors to travel to Laos in March 2019. International travel continues to be an extraordinary – but fundamental – component of the Shaker experience. Global experiences align with the District’s commitment to excellence, equity, and exploration for all students, as well as with our International Baccalaureate program. However, a growing number of our students would like to, but cannot afford, to participate in these opportunities. To help extend these enriching experiences to a greater number of our students, the Foundation has established a Travel Opportunity Assistance Fund. Boosting Learning for Shaker Pre-K Families The Shaker Schools Foundation partners with several Foundations and corporations, allowing us to magnify our collective impact. In 2019, the Shaker Schools Foundation secured a $30,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation to fund seven PreK Family Inquiry Nights to support emerging literacy, math, science, and social and emotional skills for our District’s youngest learners. Families from throughout the District’s full-day and half-day PreK programs are invited to attend the events, which alternate between Mercer and Onaway, where the Shaker PreK programs are housed. Each event offers dinner, special activities, a parent discussion, and a book to take home. Shaker parent Christine Reynolds has two students who attend Shaker PreK programs. As a family, they have particularly enjoyed the hands-on activities at each event. “One of their favorite activities was building a boat and trying to get it to float in a rain gutter,“ she says. “They both built a couple of different ones and tried to improve them to get them to float better and longer. This is just one example of the many times I could see them working through a project and not giving up when it got hard.” Shaker PreK teacher Kristin Koenigsberger loves that the Engagement Nights provide a “fun, safe, environment where learning is happening for everyone - students, parents and teachers.” She feels it is particularly helpful that “parents get an opportunity to talk with other parents, which is restorative for them.” Reynolds agrees. “The kindergarten prep seminar was a good reminder that students come to kindergarten at different levels, so we don’t have to push our children too hard to be ‘kindergarten ready.’”

Building Bridges for High School Students Since 2016, the Foundation has helped to secure significant funding from the Jennings Foundation for the Bridges Program, which provides enhanced academic support to Shaker Heights High School students both over the summer and through the school year. The Summer Bridges Experience began in 2016 as a way to develop study skills, enhance students’ mindset for academic progress and introduce the content for Honors, AP and IB Diploma level courses. The program now continues into the school year, as students and faculty meet monthly to learn strategies and techniques for continued academic success. High School social studies teacher Sarah Davis, who directs the program, says, “Our goal for the Shaker Bridges program is to increase student diversity and success in Honors, AP, and IB Diploma classes so that it more accurately reflects Shaker’s diverse population.” Within the first two years of the program, the percentage of students of color participating in Advanced Placement U.S. History at the High School has increased from 15 percent to 33 percent. Adds Davis, “Underrepresented students we wish to support include students who identify as members of racial minority groups, have a 504, have an IEP, or have English as their second language. We believe that supporting equity for these students will greatly increase diversity in the classroom, and bridge any gaps in achievement.”

Full STEAM Ahead for Innovation and Hands On Learning In 2018, the Shaker Schools Foundation launched the Innovation Fund, dedicated to supporting STEAM learning for all students throughout the Shaker schools. The fund was introduced at the 2018 A Night for the Red & White, and raised more than $100,000 in its first year. In 2019, an additional $42,000 in direct donations were raised in one evening at A Night for the Red & White, and the fund continues to grow through donations from individual donors, corporations and foundations. In the past year, the District announced its i3 Initiative to support student inquiry, imagination and innovation, and solicited i3 grant proposals from all of the K-12 Shaker schools. The Shaker Schools Foundation and District have allocated an initial round of funding for every grade level:

• Shaker Heights High School received $70,000 to support identified pathways in engineering, manufacturing, and the arts.

• Woodbury Elementary School received $81,919 to support a makerspace, mobile STEAM projects and Innovation Lab.

• Shaker Heights Middle School received $30,080 to support professional learning opportunities, site visits, curriculum writing, and software/ hardware purchases.

• All Shaker Heights Elementary Schools received a combined $255,000 to support professional learning opportunities, site visits, curriculum writing, and identified materials and resources over three years. Intimate Conversations with Unique Shaker Voices Launched as a community engagement project in 2017, this speaker series continues to draw Shaker community members together to exchange ideas on a timely topic and to hear from many of our talented alumni about how their Shaker experience has impacted their success. Each event is hosted in a Shaker location, with proceeds benefiting the Shaker Schools Foundation.

In 2018: Broadway performer Betsy Werbel, Class of ‘92, shared songs and stories about her journey from Shaker to Broadway, where she joined the companies of Les Miserables and Wicked, then toured with those productions throughout the U.S. and Canada. World-renowned violinist Andrew Sords, Class of ‘03, entertained the audience with favorite selections from his repertoire and stories about the early influencers in his musical life in the Shaker schools and at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Andrew has appeared as a soloist with celebrated conductors and orchestras throughout the world. Renowned restaurateurs Zack Bruell, Class of ‘71 and Julian Bruell, Class of ‘08, discussed their involvement in the Cleveland food scene and provided samples of their culinary fare. Zack is founder, proprietor, and head chef of The Zack Bruell Restaurant Group, which includes Parallax Restaurant and Lounge, L’Albatros Brasserie + Bar, Table 45, Chinato Ristorante, Cowell & Hubbard and others. Julian is director of service for the group.

In 2019: Singer, songwriter, actor and educator Mariama Whyte, Class of ‘93, entertained the audience with music, including a duet with sister and fellow Shaker alum Miata Hunter, now principal of Shaker Heights Middle School. Mariama has wowed audiences in leading roles with the Broadway national tours of The Lion King and The Color Purple and in numerous productions with The Cleveland Playhouse and Karamu House.

Shaker alumni play a critical role in helping the Foundation achieve our mission. Please be sure to update your information at shakerschoolsfoundation.org/alumni so that we can keep you informed about upcoming reunions, hall of fame events and other important news!

Middle east policy analyst Aaron David Miller, Class of ‘67, will share his views as Vice President for New Initiatives and a Distinguished Fellow and Director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. The event is scheduled for fall of 2019.

A Night for the Red & White

More than 600 attendees celebrated at the 2019 A Night for the Red & White, including parents, community members, and Shaker educators (shown here). This 27-year tradition continues to thrive as neighbors and friends come together for a night of celebration in support of the Shaker schools. This gala event annually draws more than 600 attendees who enjoy dinner, dancing, and robust bidding at the silent auction, along with student music performances, an outstanding art show, and student-led exhibits featuring innovation and robotics. At the 2018 event, the Foundation introduced the Innovation Fund to support hands-on learning in science, technology, arts, engineering and mathematics. Additional funds were also raised for each of the District’s eight school buildings for other enrichment projects, including fine arts, health and fitness. The 2019 A Night for the Red & White raised $42,000 in direct donations to the Innovation Fund. The event also honored members of the Class of 1950/51 for their significant fundraising contributions, which have amounted to nearly $300,000 over the past decade. Their efforts have made possible a summer learning academy to help at-risk students succeed at the High School, and a social and emotional learning program for elementary students.

Save the date for A Night for the Red & White, Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Hilton Cleveland Downtown at 7 pm. We hope to see you there!
