From the President

“ The energy and positive spirit engendered by our work are contagious, and our reach is extending around the world.”

My second year as President of the Shaker Schools Foundation has been one of anticipation and growth. Holly Coughlin, our new Executive Director, began in late 2016, and under her leadership the Foundation is developing innovative alumni programs, engaging new friends and donors, and enjoying an updated look. Our vision is becoming a reality; our horizons are expanding! As I write this, we are well into fiscal year 2018, and our progress continues apace. The energy and positive spirit engendered by our work are contagious, and our reach is extending around the world. That said, we exist for the students who are entrusted to the Shaker Heights City Schools. Highlights of our impact during FY2017 include:

• The launch of a new preschool, Shaker’s First Class; • Materials and supplies for the Woodbury Drama Club; • Assistance with expenses for the Chamber Orchestra’s participation in the National Orchestra Cup Competition in New York City;

• A new guest artist-in-residence for Evening of Jazz; • A new batting cage at the Lomond softball field, for use by the girls’ softball team; • Travel subsidies for four students to join a service trip to Cambodia. Each of the projects listed above offered new opportunities for participants to take risks, collaborate, and enlarge their sense of the world. This Annual Report contains some of their stories; when you read them, please know that you made their experiences possible! We continue to be good stewards of your investments. At the conclusion of the 2017 fiscal year, our assets exceeded $3.7 million, and our independent audit was clean. The Annual Fund broke all previous records to raise more than $145,000, and we contained our operating expenses to end with a surplus for the eighth consecutive year. Our entire Board and staff are extremely grateful to the alumni, parents, faculty, friends, and organizations that give generously and consistently to support the extraordinary work of Shaker’s public school system. Thank you for believing in the Shaker Schools Foundation.

Shaker’s First Class

Enriches Shaker’s Youngest Learners Making Connections and Building Community “Deciding to enroll in Shaker’s First Class was a big decision for us. Coming from a private school, we weren’t sure if we would get as much communication as we were used to, and it was the first year of a new program. The program has by far exceeded our expectations, in terms of the rich content and the diversity of the class, both of which were very important to us. We’ve gotten to know the other parents at events at school as well as through field trips to the Natural History Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art. I love the idea of teaching the kids holistically; it’s more about understanding the world around them, not just memorization. The children are more than ready for Kindergarten - they all know their numbers and their letters, and they can handle a daily school schedule. Just as important, we wanted to be sure that Grace was in a place where she learns to be a good person, and I think that’s what IB is all about. Grace talks a lot about her community and understanding the world around her. She sees a sign with an “H” and knows that’s for a hospital. She recognizes the post office and the library. And they’re also making connections with one another. I loved the unit they did on “how we are alike and how we are different.” At three years old, they don’t really see the differences between boy and girl or the color of their skin. But just as they are starting to notice those things, we are teaching them to be accepting of those differences. Talking about it up front is really huge for us.” - Barbara Fedor Barbara and Nick Fedor are the parents of Grace Fedor, who is completing her second year of Shaker’s First Class at Onaway Elementary. Barbara is global business director for life sciences at Lubrizol Corporation, and Nick is executive director of the Shaker Heights Community Development Corporation. The Shaker Schools Foundation secured major funding support for the District-wide, full-day Pre-K program for Shaker’s youngest learners. Shaker Baseball and Softball Program

Helping the

to Grow and Compete Playing with Heart

“I have been playing softball and baseball in Shaker since I was a little kid on the T-ball team. I played on the Middle School team for two years, started for the varsity team the last four years, and captained the team since my junior year. I have also helped run softball clinics for younger girls and coached a Shaker U14 team the last two years. I love playing on this team and getting to form lasting friendships with the other girls. The Shaker Schools Foundation has given the baseball and softball teams the tools to truly compete and grow as a program. The new batting cages at the high school and at Lomond allow us to use our practice time more effectively and help us compete at the highest level. The fence at Lomond, along with the dugout covers, makes us look like a real softball team, as every other school we play at has a fence. Softball taught me how to work as a team player, listen to others, and communicate. I have made so many connections with girls from my team, my coaches, and the younger girls I coached. Softball has brought out the best in me and my teammates. Playing a team sport and being the captain and a coach means that I always have to be communicating and caring. I care so much about the girls I’ve coached and watched grow up. I play with my heart every single game because I not only care about the sport, but especially about these girls.”

- Molly Amolsch

Molly Amolsch (front row, third from left in red cap) is a Shaker Heights High School senior and captain of the women’s softball team. She will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall. The Shaker Schools Foundation provided funding for the Shaker baseball and softball programs to buy new uniforms and install a batting practice cage, new fencing, and dugout signage at the Lomond field where the softball teams play. Woodbury Drama Club

Puts Students Front and Center Learning Responsibility, Taking Risks “Woodbury Drama Club broadens students’ horizons by giving them an experience they may never otherwise have. Our Drama Club students are risk-takers! Auditioning for the play can be quite stressful, and performing in an auditorium full of people takes amazing courage, especially for fifthand sixth-graders. Our Drama Club students are also principled. They take their responsibility seriously by memorizing their lines, creating props and costumes, running a soundboard, and designing a set. When everything comes together on the night of the big performance, it is wonderful to behold the excitement and pride on the kids’ faces! Woodbury Drama Club couldn’t exist without the help and support from many, including the Shaker Schools Foundation.” - Dan Farinacci Dan Farinacci is a Woodbury teacher and supervisor of the Woodbury Drama Club. The Shaker Schools Foundation is proud to support the fine and performing arts throughout the Shaker schools. The Woodbury Drama Club relied on Foundation funding to purchase materials and supplies for the after-school club, which serves 200 Woodbury students. SHHS Chamber Orchestra Takes the Stage at Lincoln Center Opening New Doors “When I was a sophomore, the Shaker Schools Foundation gave me a scholarship to help me to travel to Europe with the orchestra. Being overseas for the first time really inspired me to open up some new doors. It influenced my decision to study International Business in college. But first, it inspired me to practice my violin more. Before that, I was just playing to get the credit, but I wasn’t giving it my full effort. I started practicing every day, and meeting after school with Ms. Jelen, just to be a better player. I decided to try out for chamber orchestra my senior year. I just wanted to see if I could do it, and I made it. During my senior year, the chamber orchestra got invited to play in the Orchestra Cup Competition at Lincoln Center in New York. I was amazed that we would be able to play on the same stage as some of the best high school orchestras in the country. The opportunity just really blew me away. Once again, the Foundation made it possible for me to go on this trip, in addition to my fundraising. On the bus on the way to the competition, I felt compelled to give a speech about giving our all. I wanted to reassure everyone that we belonged on that stage. One thing I took away from the experience is that you can achieve anything you put your mind to if you put the work into it. Now, in college, I know that if I do everything I’m supposed to do, I’ll get the good grades and I’ll achieve my goals. Everything about this experience involved being a risk-taker, from taking the leap from string orchestra to chamber, to giving a speech on the bus. We all took a big risk in going to the competition - there was no guarantee that we were going to win. Although we had fear, we couldn’t let it get in our way. The Foundation made it possible for me to be on that stage. - Maverick Wilson Maverick Wilson is a graduate of the Class of 2017. He is now studying International Business at Ohio University. The Shaker Heights High School Chamber Orchestra was named second runner-up in the 2017 National Orchestra Cup Competition at Lincoln Center, and received the festival organizer’s Forte Award for their conduct and group spirit. The Foundation provided scholarships to several players to allow them to participate in the experience, and raised funds to cover expenses, including tickets to hear the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

The Legacy Society The Shaker Schools Foundation continues to raise funds for the permanent endowment, which will provide long-term, substantial support to the Shaker Schools in the areas of academia, arts, technology, health and fitness, and special initiatives. Bequests, trusts, other planned gifts, and outright gifts are being accepted. These contributions will help ensure the enrichment of education in the Shaker Heights Schools far into the future. Donors who make an outright gift or indicate that they have provided for the Foundation in their estate planning are entitled to membership in the Legacy Society. We are grateful for their vision and belief in the value of a Shaker Schools education.

A Night for the Red & White The Shaker Schools Foundation presented the twenty-fifth A Night for the Red & White on March 4, 2017, at the Cleveland Hilton Downtown. Nearly 800 friends of the Shaker Schools enjoyed a wonderful party and celebrated the event’s Silver Anniversary. The evening included special tributes to Red & White founders Freda Levenson and K.J. Montgomery; all the members of the current and former Executive Committees (pictured above); and Christine Auginas, who organized 17 of the events prior to her retirement from the Shaker Schools. Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors, ticket buyers, and donors, the Red & White raised more than $140,000 for the enhancement of technology, the arts, humanities, and health and fitness in each of the Shaker Heights City Schools. This year’s party enjoyed the support of 24 sponsors. Very special thanks go to the Arminius Foundation, Baker Hostetler LLP, Huntington National Bank, and Tucker Ellis LLP, our Benefactors and most generous donors. We extend appreciation to the following Patrons, who give at the next highest level: Hahn Loeser & Parks LLP, KeyBank, Squire Patton Boggs LLP, and Ulmer & Berne LLP. The Foundation also is grateful to our Fellows: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Boyco!, Calvetta Brothers Floor Show, CIMA Plastics Group, Cleveland Music Group, C.P. Braman & Co., Inc., DDR Corp., Hogan Transportation, Karlovec & Company Build/Design Remodel, Legacy Capital Partners, Liberty Ford Solon, ProEvent/MotoPhoto, TorqHoist, Inc., University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, Van Auken Akins, and Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP. As sponsors of the Shaker Schools Foundation, these organizations receive recognition at A Night for the Red & White and at Foundation events and in Foundation publications throughout the calendar year. Sincere thanks and hearty congratulations to the Executive Committee of Tracy Peebles, Theresa Walsh, Miki Graban, and Megan Hanger and the many volunteers who worked on the 2017 event – and to the community for its loyal support.

Shaker Speaks, a new community engagement project designed to share the thinking of some of Shaker’s most influential residents, was launched in early 2017. The speakers’ series allows individuals to gather for an intimate conversation to exchange ideas about a complex or timely topic. Each event is hosted in a private Shaker home and limited to 50 participants. The inaugural series of three events opened with Dr. Lisa Damour, a child and adolescent psychologist, best-selling author, New York Times columnist, and contributor to CBS News. The second session featured Case Western Reserve University professor, Dr. Mark Joseph, and Director of Neighborhood Connections, Tom O’Brien, who led a discussion of trends and strategies for connecting people across lines of difference. The final talk focused on freedom of speech with Dan Moulthrop, an award-winning journalist, media veteran, and CEO of the Cleveland City Club. This series was enthusiastically received and drew members of the community who had not previously participated in Shaker Schools Foundation activities. Shaker Speaks expanded our intellectual and social horizons while connecting Shaker residents with one another and the Foundation.
