HANDS ON i3 EXHIBITION

i 3 Exhibits Motorized Chariot: When Latin, Art & Engineering Combine! Innovator Katy Christian, a Junior at Shaker Heights High School, was inspired to create a motorized chariot from the chariot races she participated in during Latin class her freshman year. Now, the entire Latin club and teacher and students from art and engineering classes are involved. The chariot features painted scenes of antiquity and motorized “horses” to pull it. Katy studied Latin with Ms. Murphy and Ms. Coffey and is currently in the new Robotics & Engineering Class with Dr. Marencik. Middle School Motogo Club: Shop Class Reimagined! The Middle School Motogo Club, a partnership which builds confidence by providing a hands-on introduction to real-world problem solving and real-world critical thinking through the tangible avenue of motorcycle maintenance. Students learn proper tool usage, measurement, calculations and small engine operation and maintenance. The Middle School MotoGo Club has been made possible through a generous grant to MotoGo from The Guinness Family Foundation for Education and Training, and through support from the Shaker Schools Foundation. Shaker Student Art Gallery: Art That Fuels The Imagination Shaker’s fine arts program aims to help students become globally aware, culturally nurtured and self-reflective in the visual arts. Students who learn to think through art will internalize their experiences and be able to begin to make decisions: to distinguish, to reflect, to devise and to understand “why.” The Shaker Schools Foundation supports numerous classroom art projects for K-8 classes and the Foundation’s Innovation Fund recently supported the purchase of a 3-D printer and a vacuum casting machine for the high school jewelry classes.

HANDS ON i3 EXHIBITION

Roving Student Artists: iPad Caricatures Immerse yourself in art! Be the subject of an impromptu sketch by talented high school artists - and receive a digital copy of your custom art at the end of the evening! Technology made possible through the Shaker Schools Foundation’s Innovation Fund allows students to learn advanced digital design and editing skills and to apply those skills to unique artistic creations. Advanced visual art students are the innovative illustrators this evening. Green Screen Technology: Picture Yourself...Anywhere! Graphic design students at the High School learn multimedia advertisement through video film, audio sound, 2D and 3D animation. Here, students use a “green screen” to transport guests for an out of this world experience - complete with a keepsake photograph! Shaker’s graphic design students, led by art teacher Keaf Holliday, develop their skills aided by graphic design technology made possible through a grant from the Shaker Schools Foundation’s Innovation Fund. Meet the Fanuc Robot: Dr. Joe Marencik Demonstrates The Fanuc Robot is the centerpiece of the enhanced curriculum and instruction for students in the Manufacturing & Engineering and Engineering & Computer Science Pathways. Students gain experience in robotics, mechatronics, basic electronics and laboratory safety through training modules and authentic advanced manufacturing hands-on projects. Dr. Joseph Marencik leads two sections of the high school Advanced Robotics and Manufacturing Class that was launched this year. The FANUC robot was made possible through support from foundations and corporations, and by gifts to the Innovation Fund at last year’s A Night for the Red & White - from donors like you!

THANK YOU!

Meet Our Emcee: Michael Tate, Class of 1985 Born, raised and educated in Shaker Heights, Michael Tate first attended Lomond Elementary, then Ludlow Elementary, as a member of the inaugural “Special Projects Program” for gifted and talented students. He then attended Byron Junior High School (now Shaker Heights Middle School) and Shaker Heights High School. His love of performance was stoked on the stage and in the classroom, where he proudly rocked the red polyester jacket of the Chanticleers! (It was the 80s, folks.) He was also an uncanny mimic of many of his teachers (always done with love and respect). Michael went on to earn his B.A. from Brown University and his J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law. He has lived in San Francisco since 1998, where he works as the director of digital and data services for the Stanford Alumni Association. One of his great joys is singing with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. His other passion is helping non-profit organizations achieve their fundraising goals as a high-energy and inspiring auctioneer. Over the past decade, he has applied these talents on behalf of more than 50 local, national, and international organizations. Says Michael, “Shaker helped me appreciate a diverse array of people. Whether you always agree with people or not, being able to have thoughtful and civilized discourse is something that my Shaker experience prepared me for. I loved growing up in Shaker and cherish the memories of my life there and the friendships I formed and still maintain.” Please join us in welcoming Michael home to celebrate and support the Shaker Schools!

THANK YOU! A Special Thank You To‌ Our talented and hard-working Executive Committee Event Co-Chairs: Mity Fowler, Lauren Martin, Marla Walker and Sarah Brandon Bowen. Brad and Jennifer Owens, Shaker parents and producers of the Hey Shaker! Podcast. They will be roving at the event to interview guests as part of an upcoming podcast featuring A Night for the Red & White. Cortina Leather and Kathryn Prause Designs for creating our leather key fob keepsakes to commemorate this evening. Be sure to take one home with you! Erica Verderber for 20 years of dedication, support, and expertise in organizing this event!!

HONORING OUR FOUNDING CO-CHAIRS

Tonight we pay tribute to two special women who had the vision to create this event: Freda Levenson and K.J. Montgomery. Both are longtime Shaker residents and supporters of the Shaker Schools. Freda is the legal director of the ACLU of Ohio, and served many years on the Shaker Heights Board of Education. She is a Shaker Heights High School graduate and the parent of four Shaker graduates. K.J. has served as the Shaker Heights Municipal Court Judge since 1994 and is the parent of two Shaker graduates. She is also the lead singer of the No Name Band, a rock band comprised of attorneys from the Cleveland area. In 1992, when they conceived of A Night for the Red & White, Freda and K.J. hoped to be able to attract 100 attendees to come out for a night in support of the Shaker Schools. The intended venue was Heinens Grocery Store at Shaker Towne Centre. But when ticket sales surged past 300, a mad scramble ensued to change the location to the (then) Omni Hotel at the Cleveland Clinic (now the InterContinental). Now in its 28th year, the event has consistently drawn more than 600 attendees each year and raised more than $2.8 million for Shaker students in every building. Says K.J., “My best memories of the Red & White involve watching the student performers, especially Freda’s singers and my drummer son. As you say hello to old PTO friends, you also get to meet the amazing, brilliant younger parents who make us know that this community is in good hands for the future.” Freda loves that the event is “the perfect excuse to get all dressed up, see your Shaker friends, and connect with the larger community - all while you raise money for a cause you deeply believe in.” Please join us in thanking and honoring Freda and K.J. for their visionary support of the Shaker Schools! 8
