LEARNING, FAITH, LEADERSHIP

Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” As if this wasn’t enough of a challenge, Jesus concludes, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

Mike Prato - President

We’ve been entrusted with much

I recall a meeting with Father Bob Spitzer, then President of Gonzaga University, at a retreat. “Michael,” he stated with a directness I was unprepared for, “I will pray for you each day. Your work as a leader of a Catholic high school is far more important than it is with me. You are entrusted with the still-undecided souls. Not only are you expected to prepare them for college and beyond, you are mandated by the very nature of the name of your school; to further the Catholic/Christian faith in and out of the classroom.” Needless to say, this was an intimidating challenge and expectation. This year, in an effort to strengthen our resolve to purport the faith, a sub-committee of the Advisory board was formed to advise, direct, create, pray for and pray over those commissioned to deliver on the Catholic identity (Spiritual Direction) of Kennedy Catholic High School as an apostolate for Christ in South Seattle and the Greater Seattle area. The intent is to elevate parents as partners in formation while at the same time furthering their own formation. We envision this committee engaging with existing campus ministry offerings and supporting those initiatives in thought, word, action and deed. In addition, evangelizing our mission in the greater community. Our Catholic identity should be something that sets us apart in holiness. Our ability to evangelize comes from an encounter that causes us to be curious, courageous, and provoked to the point of being transformed in Christ. Committee members include representation from John Knox, Church by the Side of the Road, St. Francis, St. Anthony, St. Vincent de Paul, and Lake Burien Presbyterian. It is a mixture of pastors, youth ministers and key stakeholders in both parish work and involvement in the mission of Kennedy Catholic. We are blessed to have men and women of faith come forward to accept and support the challenge and expectation to care for the souls of the Kennedy Catholic community.
