Dear Friends,
We are happy to share this year’s Report on Philanthropy with the Shady Hill community. Throughout the 2024–2025 school year, our theme of “Teaching and Learning” was a consistent thread that began during Opening Meetings in August and continued through June. This topic was chosen by our faculty who wanted to reflect on curriculum and pedagogy in order to ensure that our students’ experience continues to be strong, engaging and meaningful.
Faculty spent time on curriculum mapping with a focus on the scope and sequence of skills and content by grade level. We also had a committee revise our TOAD curriculum (Talks on Adolescent Development) to include executive functioning and digital citizenship. In addition, we had conversations with parents about the use of technology and social media to align our support for healthy child development, and we shared the outcomes from the Parent Engagement and Access & Belonging surveys.
In this report, we highlight the special moments that occurred last year as we supported the heart of Shady Hill, our faculty. We continued to make progress on our three strategic priorities: People, Program and Community. Our goal is to build on Shady Hill’s distinctive pedagogy and strong sense of community to ensure long term sustainability.

Strategic Plan
Shady Hill’s current strategic plan, “Shady Hill Strong” was born in 2023 after a feedback rich process from alumni, parents, and trustees.
Three priorities will guide Shady Hill from 2023 through 2028.
• Strengthen the Academic Program
• Reimagine the Employee Journey
• Reinvigorate the Community
For student life, we were able to test a Middle School lunch program and reimagine phones and smart watches from the classroom among other programs. TOAD was rehauled and we hosted our first Career Day with alumni guests.
Teachers dug into their curriculum maps as a way to anchor their Thematic Study and Central Subject curriculum and the design and solutions working group built opportunities for employees to connect and learn from each other.
So much work occurs behind the scenes and we have made strides in tackling the strategic plan with more to come next year.
Intellectually Adventurous
Hands on, immersive experiences that allow for discovery are at the foundation of the Central Subject and Thematic Study approach. The students in these photos are problem solving in the Hub, exercising collaboration and synthesizing multiple perspectives.

Elizabeth Thomson passed away in January 2024 at the age of 86. She was a proud Parent of an Alumni and worked as a publications editor and designer at Shady Hill School. She was a staunch believer in education and supporter of educational institutions. In her estate planning, she left a generous gift to Shady Hill which has been used for faculty support.
Boosting Financial Aid Endowment Through the Willow Tree Society
We excitedly welcomed Tom into the Willow Tree Society when in 2022, loyal alumnus Tom Gregg ’51 informed the School that he had named Shady Hill as a partial beneficiary of one of his IRA accounts.
Fast forward to the spring of 2024, at which point, Tom was taking part in the fourth grade Pen Pals project and trading letters with a current student. Tom was getting a big kick out of reliving the Ancient Greeks Central Subject, as narrated by his nine-year-old correspondent.
Once again, Tom phoned the Advancement Office, this time sharing that he was considering moving up his bequest so that the School could put the money to use in the near-term for financial aid.
Shady Hill is always looking to boost our financial aid endowment. Upon learning that financial aid increased from roughly $2.5 million to over $4 million in the past five years, Tom was convinced to act now and created an endowed fund called the Thomas F. Gregg ’51 Fund for Financial Aid, transferring monies from his IRA – which had the added benefit of counting towards his required minimum distribution that year, with no tax consequences, since Shady Hill is a nonprofit.
The Tom Gregg Fund can now generate spendable financial aid dollars, supporting the School’s deep commitment to a diverse education, a conviction Tom feels has given him a rich world of knowledge and culture, and he specially wishes to honor those who taught him so much at Shady Hill.
Highest Impact Donors
Leadership donors transform the institution and are pivotal in securely positioning the School to accomplish major initiatives and special projects. While many contributed to the Shady Hill Fund this year, and we are grateful to each and every of the 1,050 donors who gave to the more than $2M to the Shady Hill Fund, these aggregated amounts of gifts and pledges comprise support of the Shady Hill Fund in addition to various endowments and special projects. We are incredibly appreciative.
