HABITAT BUILDER Spring 2022 - Issue 20

Helping People, Changing Lives People come to volunteer with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity for a variety of reasons, but they all leave with the same inspiration. We can’t thank you enough for all your time, talents and treasures. Here is what a few of our volunteers have to say: “Hard work never felt so good!” - Chris, ReStore Volunteer

“I signed up on the volunteer page and saw a shift open for a home repair in Altadena. When I have free time, I want to commit my time to help San Gabriel Valley Habitat.” - Janney, Volunteer “I encourage everyone, no matter your age, to support Habitat for Humanity by volunteering. There is always something engaging and productive to do, and it is an amazing environment to work in. I know that every task I do when I volunteer will impact so many people. Whether you volunteer in the office or help build a home – there are always friendly people there to assist you. Volunteering at Habitat is always the highlight of my week and I am so glad I get to help this amazing organization.” -Justin, Volunteer Sign Up. Show Up. Take Action!

VOLUNTEER Celebrating our dedicated, hardworking volunteers during National Volunteer Month

“A close friend of mine lives in a single room with his wife and child. Even though he works very hard to provide for his family, our region’s sky-rocketing rents prevent him from living anywhere else. The thing I love most about Habitat is that it’s a real solution, not a bandaid!” - Ruben, Volunteer and Builders’ Club Member “I love working with San Gabriel Valley Habitat to help people reach their dream of homeownership and stable housing.” - Carolyn, Volunteer

A Brighter Future Thanks to You Thanks to you, this Duarte Family Enjoys the Place They Call Home!

Donna and Richard purchased their home on a quiet street in Duarte 35 years ago. While living here they raised 4 children, including Abbie, their 25-year-old daughter with special needs, who remains in their care. As seniors with a limited income, they struggle to keep up with the upkeep of their aging home. An outside patio had become extremely termite damaged, the living room ceiling looked like it needed to be replaced, aging carpet carried years of unhealthy dander and a broken window remained in Abbie’s room after their beloved dog, spooked from fireworks, cracked the glass. All these repairs were overwhelming for this family, who spends most of their time caring for Abbie’s needs. Their life changed after a shopping trip to the Duarte San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore. “I inquired at the store whether there were any programs to help,” said Donna. “I was introduced to the home repair program, and it far exceeded our expectations.” After qualifying for the program, the SGV construction crew completed an assessment to determine the projects they could assist with. Then the crew went to work and in less than a week transformed the Baggett’s forever home. “It went from dark, damp and dreary to bright and uplifting,” said Donna. Many of the programs available for Abbie have been shut down due to the pandemic, so the family has been confined to spending most of their time at home and the former state of their house had contributed to a depressed feeling among the family. With the burden of so many critical, needed repairs gone, Donna now refers to her home as her castle and says the feeling of their home is now so light and airy that these are now the “best years of her life.” To donate, apply or learn more about our ctitical home repair program visit https://bit.ly/sgvhabitathrp

Home Is The Key

Habitat for Humanity knows that home is the key to freeing families from financial instability, from stress and from impossible choices between essential needs. And we know that you will be the key to helping our neighbors and our communities. This April’s Home is the Key Campaign reminds us all of the importance of home and draws on the strength and support of you — Habitat’s tremendous community — to anticipate the time when, together, we can help even more families know the strong foundation that a Habitat home can provide. You can join us in this effort by visiting our ReStore or website for more details. http://bit.ly/2pW72K1

Pray With Us

National Day of Prayer May 5 Habitat began as a ministry founded on Christian principles. We invite people of all faiths to join us in building homes, transforming communities, and creating hope.

Earth Day is Every Day at our ReStores

We invite you to pray with us: If there is among us a man in need within our community, let us not harden our hearts nor shut our hands to him, but let us open our hands wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. We shall surely give to him, and our hearts should not be grieved when we give to him, because for this thing the Lord God will bless us in all our works and in all to which we put our hand. For those in need will never cease from the land; therefore, we shall open our hands wide to our brother, to the underserved in our community. Let us join you in being a father to the fatherless, a home to the homeless, and a light in the darkness. Amen For more information on our faith programs email SCruz@sgvhabitat.org

Under Construction

When you donate your new or gently used items to one of our ReStores, you are changing lives by making affordable homeownership and home repair a reality for families in your own community. Not only are you making a difference locally, but you’re also making a difference globally by preventing household items with plenty of life left from needlessly going to waste in a landfill!
