You’re about to meet Harold and Idalia. Today, the lives of this family have become brighter. You, our amazing donors, started it all, here at the Manzanita Ave. construction site. 1

Why are Harold, Idalia, and their family most likely to succeed? Because of YOU! Thanks to your support, they now have the potential to stand on their own. Read their story below.
Before moving into their Habitat home, Harold and Idalia were struggling to find a safe and stable place for their family to live. 2
Rent was always going up, and conditions were crowded. At one point, Harold had to use the porch of their old home as a makeshift bedroom, just so their children could have a space to sleep.
Due to the limited space, their children - Kathryn, Miriam, Jocabed, and Caleb - struggled to find a place to study. 3

Their youngest daughter, Paula, is wheelchair bound, which made it difficult for her to move around their old house. Paula’s parents had to carry her from room to room because the doorways were so narrow.

But then... the family got news that would change their lives forever. Thanks to donors like you, they were going to build and buy a Habitat home! 4
Pretty soon, they started building their own home in Pasadena. Even Miriam and Kathryn, their older daughters, pitched in!

Months later, they got the keys to their new home and their brighter futures! 5
Today, Miriam and her older sister Kathryn are in college. Paula has more freedom at home thanks to a space designed for her needs, including wider hallways, a wheelchair ramp, and an accessible bathroom.
Today, their entire family can spend quality time together knowing that the home they live in is there for years to come - thanks to you! 6

Building stronger families and a stronger San Gabriel Valley
In 1990 - driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, “Ace” Cain and a group of committed volunteers founded San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. Today, thanks to you, our volunteer and donor-powered organization has helped 227 families gain quality housing and self-sufficiency locally and abroad. In honor of our 30th anniversary, we’ve included some of our 30 for 30 stories to celebrate the individuals, like you, who have made this possible. DONNA has been a dedicated member of the Habitat community for nearly three decades.

Donna
Donna has helped San Gabriel Valley Habitat wherever she could. She organized the first-ever Women Build event and even advocated for the successful construction of four Habitat homes in Monrovia. Today, Donna serves on the affordable housing committee she helped create in Monrovia and is never shy to return to her Habitat roots as a volunteer and donor!

CRISSY wanted a hands-on volunteer project that would result in an outcome she could see and touch. Habitat was a great fit for her. She has volunteered on several projects, often working side-by-side Habitat homebuyers.

Today, Crissy volunteers whenever she can. She is also part of the Builders’ Club, a group of passionate and determined group of monthly givers on a mission to end the housing crisis!
BILL retired from banking years ago and was looking for a way to get involved in his community. He went to one of our construction sites as a volunteer, picked up a hammer, and never looked back!

In fact, he has participated in the construction of dozens of homes over the course of 30 years! Bill continues to volunteer to build the walls of homes to provide strength and stability for even more families.

MILLIE can relate to the millions of people struggling to find a safe and stable home, as her family was close to losing their home just one semester before Millie was to graduate from high school.

Resilience, hard work, and determination got her through it all. Today, Millie is the Community Relations Manager at Bank of America, one of our faithful financial partners bringing homeownership opportunities to families in need throughout San Gabriel Valley.
SAYAKA is no stranger to Habitat’s mission. In fact, she’s been an SGV Habitat employee since January 2007!

NICK got more involved with SGV Habitat after he moved into his new home, including participating in a six year term on the board of directors.

Nick graduated from USC Marshall School of Business and Leventhal School of Accounting. From there, he started his career as a CPA, moved to consulting, and eventually moved on to the media and entertainment industry. There is no doubt that the home his parents were able to build and purchase impacted his life significantly.

LETTER FROM MARK Hello Friend, I am excited to share with you that in fiscal year 2020, despite many challenges, 18 families have built and purchased or repaired their homes in partnership with SGV Habitat, and you! Thanks to your support, these families are enjoying the safety and security of a decent, healthy, and affordable home. Our homeowners share many stories with us about what it means for them to shelter safely during this pandemic that has affected us all. They tell us how their home makes remote learning so much better for their children. They share that the affordable payment has helped them through tough financial times caused by the effects of COVID-19. They send their deepest thanks to those who made it all possible. Since we began thirty years ago, your generosity has enabled us to bring this strength, stability, and self-reliance to over 200 families! Families like Harold, Idalia, and their children, who once lived in cramped and unstable conditions, are now thriving in their new home. Their stress and fear are gone; replaced by determination and hope. We are proud of all we’ve accomplished in partnership with you, and know we must do even more. Through careful management, we are ready and able to help more families than ever before, despite these difficult times! We can’t do it alone, and are counting on you to stand with us as we build homes, stronger families, and hope! Over the next three years, we will expand the impact of your generous support to help at least 100 additional low-income families build or repair their homes. This will happen through innovative housing models, investment in our capacity, and more partnerships within the community.
