Gilberto and Hortencia Say, “Thank You!”

On the Brink of Losing it All, Your Generosity Saved Their Home

Gilberto and Hortencia had lived in their home for almost thirty years. Their home was a place for family to gather year after year.

Unfortunately, after many years, their roof needed significant repairs and their windows were getting so old that their home was always too hot or too cold.

It was no longer safe for their children and grandchildren to visit and even after careful budgeting, their home was too expensive for them to maintain.

In fact, city officials were so concerned for the safety of their home, that they nearly condemned it. This would have caused Gilberto and Hortencia to lose the home they had worked so hard to make their own.

Luckily for them, a friend told their daughter, Alondra, about San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity’s affordable home repair program.

Alondra helped her parents submit an application and wrote a long letter explaning her parents’ difficult situation.

After undergoing a home inspection, a staff person at San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity called them with the good news...

Their home repair application had been accepted! They were overjoyed to know their home would be saved! Soon enough, workers came to their home to fix their roof and windows in what was a labor of love from the community.

In March 2019, the repairs were complete!

Thanks to the generosity of supporters just like you, Gilberto and Hortencia have a solid roof over their heads. Now, their children and grandchildren can visit them any day of the year.

Their grandparents’ home will be a safe haven for years to come!

Learn About the Programs Behind Gilberto and Hortencia’s Story Home Repair Seniors, veterans and other low-income homeowners just like Gilberto and Hortencia can access affordable, no-profit home repairs. Payments from these repairs go back into building and repairing homes locally.

Homeownership San Gabriel Valley Habitat homebuyers help build their homes alongside community volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.

Families and individuals in your community partner with Habitat to build and buy their own safe and stable home.

Homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of “sweat equity� building their homes or other homes. They also take financial education courses that prepare them for success.

Homebuyers pay an affordable mortgage that does not exceed 30% of their income. These payments are reinvested to serve more families - and it all starts with your support!

The result? Better health outcomes, double the chances of attending college, and an increase in expendable income that goes right back into the community.
