Ellafest℠ April 29, 2023 Colorado Springs, Colorado Our mission is to advocate for and enhance our Southern Colorado membership's ability to improve the quality of health, life and services for individuals, families and communities affected by sickle cell disease and related conditions, while promoting the search for a cure for all people in the world with sickle cell disease.

The Ella Mae Bransom Sickle Cell Association provides local support to those affected by hemoglobinopathies. Patient Navigators are chapter members who have received National training to assist families through the healthcare system to maximize support and resource.

President’s Welcome Good afternoon, family and friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Ella Mae Bransom Sickle Cell Musical and Banquet.

In the few years as the president of this wonderful organization, we have been on a constant mission to bring us back to a pillar in the community. Not only to be seen but to continue to strive to make Sickle Cell a thing of the past.

I want to give a heartfelt thank you to all of our clients, families, friends and new members. You are the life blood of this organization.

I want to thank all the healthcare professionals that take care of our clients and keep us educated on all new developments in the Sickle Cell community. Our Colorado Springs clients are so grateful that our UC Health/ Memorial North Hospital is now doing blood exchanges. This eliminates the need to travel to Denver on a monthly basis.

I would like to thank all who purchased tables, raffle tickets and supporters of the silent auction.

Without you we would not be able to succeed in our mission to support our Sickle Cell clients. We also would like to thank you for your continued support throughout the year with the Blood Drive, outings and just overall support. With a little help we can hopefully make someone’s day a little better.

I would like to invite everyone to continue to learn, educate and share all information about Sickle Cell with any and all who listen. I try to encourage as many people as I can by sharing my experiences as a Sickle Cell patient and letting them know that no one can stop you but you.

And last and certainly not least, I want to thank the awesome Board that makes this all possible. The ones who gives of their time and all the hard work. From the bottom of my heart, I want to Thank You. Always remember and never forget: “A set back is just a set up for a comeback.”

Sickle Cell Ambassador and Master of Ceremony James Brown James is originally from Hartsville, South Carolina. After graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force and worked as a Command and Control Specialist. He’s served in several states in the U.S. including Texas, Ohio, Florida and Louisiana. He also served in Germany and Turkey. He found himself in Colorado Springs stationed at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). James retired after 20 years of honorable service.

James is a graduate of the Columbia School of Broadcasting, Hollywood, California and Pikes Peak Community College where he received an Associates Degree in Broadcasting. He then attended the Colorado State University-Pueblo where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. James is currently working on his Meteorology Degree through Mississippi State University.

He has worked in radio for more than 25 years. In his spare time, James enjoys photography and has a DJ service.

He is married, and has a daughter and a rabbit named Cinnamon.

The name of the band comes from the Colorado Springs area code. We wanted to highlight that there are good bands and musicians in Colorado Springs and not just the Denver area.

The 719s lead vocalist is Paula aka PBJ. Paula started her musical journey at a young age. A native Hawaiian, she was influenced by Israel Kamakawieo’ole, Na Leo Pilimehana, Keali’i Reichel, Gabby Pahinui, to Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder and the like.

She began singing with her mom around the house and graduated to singing a cappella with her sister and her childhood best friend at church. There she learned the art of harmonizing. In high school, she entered into two local talent show events called Brown Bags to Stardom. At the first event, she, her sister, and childhood best friend placed second. They were fortunate to compete against the local winners who went on to sing on the soundtrack of the film, “Soul Food.” The group, “Tenderoni,” was produced by a little-known artist known by his nickname Baby Face. Their big hit on the soundtrack was called, “Baby I.” Awarded a full music scholarship to the University of Hawaii, Paula has been a “band geek” most of her life.

She plays five instruments: flute, piccolo, tuba, sousaphone, and the alto saxophone, none of which she plays on stage…maybe one day. Paula’s joys include spending time with her sons, dogs, family and friends. She loves the outdoors and loves to entertain.

Dan is the drummer and loves playing music and performing. He started playing music when he was very young. Dan has played different genres from rock, country, smooth jazz, funk and RnB. He’s played music all over the United States and toured with great bands and events such as playing for former President George Bush and his family in Crested Butte and John McConnell; the owner of the Columbus Blue Jackets professional hockey team.

Roland Brawner is 719's guitar player, vocalist, multi-talented musician, composer and just a great guy -. ¯ American professional musician, songwriter, composer, recording and performance artist. ¯ 35 years performance experience in music industry – nightclubs, cruise ship, submarines, concerts, community events, private parties, employer group events. ¯ Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock, Blues and Reggae genres. ¯ Music producer, entertainment event promoter ¯ Recording Engineer ¯ CFO “Bands on the Sands, Inc.” Seven participating bands ¯ Community based philanthropy

Sickle Cell Update Kathryn Hassell, MD Director & Professor Dr. Hassell has been the Director of the Center since 2003, after serving as its Associate Director since 1992. She has been with the University since 1989. Dr. Hassell provides inpatient and outpatient care to adults with sickle cell disease at the University of Colorado Hospital. She is a site principal investigator for multi-center clinical trials for adults with sickle cell disease and has provided national leadership on study steering and executive committees.

Dr. Hassell has led several regional projects through the Mountain States Genetics Regional Collaborative Center and serves on the Newborn Screening Advisory Committee for the Colorado State Department of Health. She also sits on the steering committees of a number of national projects including the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Project for HRSA, the American Society of Hematology’s Public Health Taskforce, and the Registries and Surveillance for Hemoglobinopathies (RuSH) Project for the CDC and NIH. Dr. Hassell recently completed a four-year, part-time, IPA assignment with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

In memoriam: Nancy J. Fielder, past president Ella Mae Bransom Sickle Cell Association

Sunrise July 7, 1932 Sunset October 9, 2015 Nancy Jane Fielder, was born July 1,1932 in Fitzgerald, Georgia to Willie B. and Ozzie (Hudson) Burkes.

Nancy became a nurse in 1970 where she worked as a dietitian for the U.S. Army. She dedicated her time to the government for 20 plus years. While working, she met her soulmate Johnny Mack Fielder.

They were united in holy matrimony January 13,1970 and celebrated 37 wonderful years together before he preceded her in death in 2007.

Nancy kept a busy schedule, working and volunteering her time with her community, being president of the Ella Mae Branson Sickle Cell Association for 35 years. She held a lifetime membership with the NAACP, volunteered for the Red Cross and was honored by local organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha and Omega Psi Phi for her outstanding work in community service.

Nancy was a faithful to member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

She lived her life to the fullest, loving her family and friends and enjoying life.
