The Deep End[emic]: Oceanic Microplastic Pollution
By Sarah Rivard | M.Arch Candidate | University of Virginia | ARCH 7100
Society today does not recognize that waste streams are closed loop systems and treats earth’s oceans as infinite waste repositories. However, the oceanic microplastic waste stream links us and our daily lives to even the ocean’s most remote environments; deep sea trenches. Buckminster Fuller’s general systems theory serves as a framework to identify the currently damaging oceanic microplastic waste stream and opportunities for remediation through architecture that combines functional solutions, beauty, and opportunities for public engagement.
