Tracey Sylvester Harris T.S. Harris’ paintings speak to the central issues of human existence-desire and loss, impermanence and beauty, and the many dimensions of our connections with others. Inspired by imagery from the mid- century, the paintings are colorful yet bittersweet, depicting fleeting moments captured in bygone days . Suspended in time, Harris’ stylish and elegant figures, dream by the pool, go on holiday, swim, and ski. The figures are mysterious and in-triguing, reminding us of our own transient nature and soon to be for-gotten summers. Raised by two professional artists, Harris’s art career began at an ear-ly age. Initially showing in her family’s gallery, her work has since been exhibited in museums, galleries and collections around the world, in-cluding the the Laguna Art Museum and the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. Her work has also been featured in the movie, The Face of Love, many international book covers, and on the cover of the leading art magazine in France, Beaux Arts. SUMMER in WINTER This lovely body of work began with a collector asking for a diving girl painting. I love how free and exuberant the diving girls can be, so I happily obliged and painted a few for this exhibit. As I worked, the summery theme emerged. In California, summer never seems far away, even in winter. Themes of summer, swimming, beaches, holidays, and sunbathing beauties, come naturally to me. I was raised in the Las Vegas desert and we kids lived in swimming pools in the summer. Day in and day out, we would play and swim, and summer vacation was usually at the beach. I also loved watching old movies. The glamour and style of the movies has stayed with me to this day and finds it’s way into my paint-ings. Many people have asked why I often chose to crop a figure (actually they usually ask why I’ve cut their heads off). The answer is simple. When I was taking life drawing and life painting classes in my youth, it was so much more exciting to me to crop the figure. The artwork be-came more of a figure study than a portrait, even somewhat abstract. I am not at all interested in who the person is. Instead of a portrait, I would rather the figure be a symbol or icon that anyone can relate to. The painting becomes a feeling of summer or freedom or joy or what-ever… I hope you enjoy them! Cheers, T.S.
