e fig ure remains my most reliable point of departure as an artist, a source that, aer many years of practice, still feels infinite. Art histor y offers an inexhaustible treasur y of the human form, and it is within that long conversation that I find my footing . Beg inning with a simple pose, the fig ure beg ins to take its shape with decisions emerg ing directly in conversation with the material. To make is to travel inward
Next the fig ure steps for ward and becomes the canvas. Trusting g esture and the spontaneous mark, the compositions unfold throug h all stag es of making . Beg inning with solid construction methods and ending with color applications, slips, g lazes, and stains are built up in layers across multiple firing s. Pig ments are le to pool and move, allowing g ravit y to contribute its voice within the composition. My hope is that the surface carries the accumulated depth and weig ht of time passing .

Michelle Greg or sculpts the abstracted human fig ure in ceramic.
Continuing in the tradition of artists such as Manuel Neri and Stephen DeStaebler (with whom she worked during her g raduate studies), Greg or ’ s forms apply the free, intuitive impulses of Abstract Expressionism to fig urative representation.
Her pieces rang e in dimension from a few inches tall to architectural-scale bronzes, but are unified in their sense of calm, mass and balance, simultaneously sug g esting motion and repose. Perhaps best known as a colorist, her painterly, multi-layered and multi-fired approach to surface endows her sculptures with a sense of depth and the passag e of time.
Greg or has a Bachelor of Fine Arts deg ree from Universit y of California , Santa Cruz and a Master of Fine Arts deg ree from San Francisco State Universit y. She is a tenured Professor of Art at San Jose Cit y Colleg e.
