Returning to On-Site Communal Worship Sometime in the hopefully-near-but-possibly-not-so-near future it is our desire to be able to open the doors on Sunday mornings so that those who wish and are able may return to worshipping together in one space. While I write this, we do not have a specific date set. Although this is the case, we felt it would be good to let you know some of the details of our safety protocols as well as what you can expect should you come. Additionally, and we can’t emphasize this enough, you should feel no pressure to do anything but what you are comfortable with and, for those to whom it applies, what your medical care provider advises. The desire and benefits of coming together should not take precedent over your health and safety. Safety Protocols: We have been, and will continue to be, following the advice of Toronto Public Health, Ontario Health and Health Canada. Because of regularly changing policies from these organizations, what you read below should be considered flexible if/when we receive further updates. • Masks are to be worn at all times while in the building with exemptions adhering to city bylaw (those who cannot wear a mask for medical reasons or who require accommodation in accordance with the Ontario Human rights code; children under 2 years old) • Social distancing of two meters at all times with those outside of your family/bubble 3
• Hand sanitizers located at the building entrance, entrance to the worship area, by the welcome desk, in the bathrooms, and hallway outside of the bathrooms. • Post hand washing, cover your cough, hand sanitizing, physical distancing and mask policy signage in suitable locations throughout the areas used • Training of staff and volunteers on the city bylaw and policy • Identification list of all individuals attending a service maintained - with contact information – for 30 days • Screening questions asked of each attendee; anyone who has any symptoms will not be able to enter the building. • Volunteers will be monitoring the flow of movement of people • Worship area has been roped off, socially distanced seating for families, couples and singles • Families/circles will be grouped together • Discouragement of singing by congregation • Washrooms are available - wipes and hand sanitizer on the counters and one of the sanitizer stations set up in the area hallway • The downstairs portion of the church building will be locked at all times. • Clearly marked entrance and exit doors to maintain distancing Here is a layout of what to expect upon arriving at the building for worship: 1. Enter through the parking lot door marked as the entrance (the one with the automatic door opener). Other entrances will remain locked. 2. Floor decals mark where to stand to keep 2-meter distance 3. Masks to be worn at all times—masks will be available for those who do not have one 4. Sanitize your hands at the main entrance 5. At the top of the stairs at the entrance to the lounge is a screening table where volunteers will ask you screening questions. Everyone must be able to answer that they do not have any symptoms of COVID19 6. All attendees able to enter the building will be checked in at the screening table. Names and emails of those not in our database will be added. In the case of an attendee reporting 4
COVID in the following weeks, everyone will be contacted. 7. After screening, people will walk to end of lounge and wait to be seated by an usher (floor decals mark where to wait to maintain distancing) 8. Traffic/Hall monitors will be monitoring and encouraging distancing, as well as being available to give assistance where needed. 9. Ushers will seat people in every second pew. Closed pews are marked off with ropes. 10. Worshippers will keep their masks on throughout worship. 11. Children and youth attending will remain with their family/ bubble. 12. Following worship, ushers will help everyone leave the worship area through the back while maintaining distancing. 13. Everyone is required to exit the building immediately, but are encouraged to have safely distanced conversation on the lawn. Worship: In order to maintain safety in accordance with Toronto Public Health, • Masks must be worn at all times during worship • Congregants are not to sing (even masked), but can speak the words or hum the music. • Singers on the platform will have plexiglass barriers between themselves and the congregation. Instrumentalists will remain masked. • We will not be passing the offering plate. Offering envelopes can be placed in a locked donation box. • We will not be handing out song sheets. Song lyrics will be on the screen, but if you wish to have an order of worship and lyrics, digital copies will be available. • On communion Sundays we will not be receiving the bread and juice. • Our time of worship will continue to be streamed live online so that those who are not able to come to the building can continue to worship with us. All of this is but a summary of the work that has been done to 5
make sure everyone is able to come together to worship safely. If you would like a copy of the official proposal from the committee or the document with full safety protocols, please email GregKay@ springgardenchurch.ca. Many thanks to the team who has been working diligently to pull this all together! –Peggy Moore, Wes Chapman, Koon Leung, Greg Kay
About Our Current Worship Series What Lies Beneath What lies beneath the dust and the cobwebs in the attic of our hearts, whether hidden, lost, or forgotten? Join us Sunday mornings this fall as we explore together the relationship between spiritual formation and emotional well-being, and how God, who is closer than we are to ourselves, longs to give us integrated hearts. This is accompanied by a small group series based on the book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. If you would like to join a small group for this series, please contact SamLee@springgardenchurch.ca This series will run from October 4th to November 22nd, 2020. 6
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is by Mary Simpkins
Do you know where your shirt was made? Do you know if the person who made it got paid? Do you care? Sustainable Development Goal #8 tackles 'decent work' and it's an uncomfortable one because it asks us whether we truly care about other people's welfare - or do we care more about our bank balance? We all know what the "right" answer is, we all know that Jesus calls us to care for one another and to treat one another with love and respect but this command can be easy to forget when the people impacted by our daily decisions are nameless, faceless, and far away. This SDG challenges us to find the line between loving a good bargain, pretending we don't know that most of our clothes were made by modern slave labour against the higher price tag and the homework required to find clothing that was ethically made. It requires us to decide whether the convenience of prime one-day shipping justifies the exploitation of thousands of warehouse workers for billions in profit. Poverty eradication is only possible through stable and well-paid jobs. Nearly 2.2 billion people live below the US$1.90 poverty line. In
7
addition to creating jobs, we also need to improve conditions for the some 783 million women and men who are working, but not earning enough to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Society as a whole benefits when more people are being productive and contributing to their country’s growth. Productive employment and “decent work” are key elements to achieving fair globalization and poverty reduction. In addition, unemployment can lead to unrest and disrupt peace if it is left unaddressed. A quick Google search says that the Bible addresses caring for the poor over 300 times! As we go through this series, I have to admit that I love how God's guidance on how to live continues to align with the UN's guidelines on how to make life on this planet sustainable. And I love how this SDG tackles the root cause of the poverty issue, instead of a bandaid solution. So what can we do? Here's what the SDG suggests for individuals -> COVID is making life very hard for small businesses so that's an easy place to start. Support your local community. Find out where the products you buy come from. There are so many amazing companies out there and maybe you buy one item from a company that treats their employees ethically instead of three from a big box store because they are one third the price. Do you really need three? How good will you feel every time you use that one article knowing that you made the world a slightly better place instead of slightly worse? As first world consumers we have the power to positively impact the lives of people we will never meet. As with all worthwhile things, it's a little more work but I guarantee it will make you feel good!

VIRTUAL COFFEE TIME SUNDAYS 11:30 AM
Join us for our virtual coffee time after our online Worship Gathering. Get some coffee and snacks and log on to our Zoom meeting where you can talk with other Spring Gardeners. We will be breaking into smaller groups. Prayer room is available. You can even just come for the first 10 minutes to say hi! Email office@springgardenchurch.ca for the log in info.
REFRESH
WEDNESDAYS 10:00 AM The fall has come again – and after 6 months of meeting on Zoom, our group is prepared to meet in the West Lounge at Spring. We invite women to join us from 1000-1130 on Wednesday mornings – and according to your individual comfort level you can join physically or virtually via Zoom. There will be safety measures in place – and one notable difference will be that we ask you to bring your own coffee or tea and snack as we will not be using the kitchen area during our meeting. For the fall semester we will be looking at the prayers of Paul in his letters in the New Testament and Jen Chrystman and Faith Holwyn will be sharing the leadership of the sessions. We are excited to be taking this step of actually seeing each other face to face – although of course with masks and 6.5 foot distance between us.
13 13
Bev Holtzman will continue to be our ‘communicator’ – and she will send out the topic and Bible verses for each session and the link for Zoom for anyone who chooses to join that way.
We welcome new members – women who want to learn more about God and share and pray with each other. We are all on a journey to know God better and so individuals who are exploring their own faith and beliefs are welcome to come and join us. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact one of the leaders: Faith Holwyn - 416-805-7529 - faith.holwyn@gmail.com Jen Chrystman - 647-688-9046 - jenchrystman313@hotmail.com Beverly Holtzman - 416-809-8046 - holtzb@rogers.com
EVENING PRAYER THURSDAYS 8:30 PM
You are invited to a virtual time of liturgical prayer. If you would like to join us we will be using Zoom. For the login and password, email: OFFICE@ SPRINGGARDENCHURCH.CA.
Friday Bible Discussion FRIDAYS 12:00 PM
We still have room for a couple of people if you are interested in dropping in for Bible Discussion on Fridays. We are meeting in the lounge by the elevator with social distancing, sanitising, screening and masks. 12 noon - gather and catch up 12:30 -
Bible Discussion
1:30 - bulk of Bible discussion is done, those who wish to leave may do so without missing anything 2:00 -
end of gathering If you wish to come mostly for the Bible Discussion please come for 12:30. You do not need to commit to every week but come as you like. I will email a reminder each week and if we need to suspend our meetings due to Covid.
Bring a sweater - if the room is stuffy we will be opening a window or using a fan for air circulation. At the moment we are using a less "academic" approach to Bible Discussion by using some of the themes of Ecclesiastes to talk 14
about our lives. What is the meaning of life ? What is most important in your life - career, income, friends, leisure time..? How has your life changed in the past 6 months? There are no right answers and we hope that by sharing we will feel supported by others who are experiencing the same things and that we will pick up new perspectives of how to cope with the next 6 months. For more information please call or text Vicki Shipmaker 647 444 9320 or email her victoriashipmaker@gmail.com
SGC Financial Update
The Lord does provide…! and that is evident in the terrific financial support given to Spring Garden Church so far this year. The Offerings and Rentals to September 28, 2020 are $326,574. Last year’s giving to this point were $361,626. We are at 90.3% of last year’s totals. Please keep up your strong gifting to year-end and continue to pray for the Staff, Elders and Deacons and members of the Church as we all work through this difficult COVID period. Many Thanks, Geoff Moore, Treasurer

EVENTS Small Group Series Based on the Book "Emotionally Healthy Spirituality" by Peter Scazzero October
The small group series, subtitled "it's impossible to be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature", looks at how our spiritual health and emotional health are tied together and how we can mature in both in our discipleship as followers of Jesus. For those who are interested, we will be offering different times throughout the week, and encouraging existing Life Groups, to gather online for small group journeys through the themes of the book.

Spring Kids: COVID-19 Update If you missed our update last month, here is a brief synopsis! Our Kid’s Sunday worship has been moved online! Our kids worship gathering will meet in person once we are certain it is safe to do so. Until then our kids will meet on zoom every Sunday following the children’s blessing. The only exception to this is on the first Sunday of each month where we will have no kids or youth gathering online. On these Sunday’s we’re encouraging families to worship together. Here is the overall flow: Children’s Blessing Ends • Kids Log in to Zoom (information for doing this will be sent out prior) • Big Group Teaching (Lead by one of our big group leaders) • Split into small groups (Our Zoom Moderator will sort people into their groups) • Small-Group Time (Small Group Leaders talk with kids about what was said during Big Group time) • Finished - Kids and leaders sign off and enjoy the rest of their Sunday We emailed the information needed to join our online meetings. If you have received the email, please do not share it with other families. If you know of anyone who should have received the email please direct them to contact Jeremy (jeremy@ springgardenchurch.ca).

A Word from out Librarian For the time being, I will not be attending Sunday services in person, and no one will be staffing the library on Sundays. Books are available for circulation at your discretion, and the returns box is open for you to drop off your returning books. Over the summer, I was able to put our books into good order, and I completed an inventory. Our online database was updated accordingly. Some of you have received an email from me about books you had checked out prior to the pandemic. There is no concern regarding getting these books returned, but rather, your responses helped me to determine what was still available to be returned at some future date. -Karen Cassel

Peace for your mind and hope for your heart: regain emotional and spiritual balance in a Post-Pandemic World, by Dr. Tim Clinton. 248.4 CLI In the wake of the pandemic, we're left experiencing feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety - not sure how to move forward or what the future will bring. Dr. Clinton enlists psychology, physiology, and science to help us cope. But his primary focus is on God's power, goodness, and love as the most potent force for regaining our equilibrium.

Our Values We believe in a humble God who came not to be served, but to serve. Therefore we engage in sacrificial and active service to those around us. We strive to be good stewards of God’s gifts and talents by serving one another in humility. We aspire to regard others as higher than ourselves, which liberates us to creatively take risks in serving others for God’s glory. We believe in a God of grace who came to save the world, not to condemn it. Therefore, as we are continuously receiving the gift of God’s grace, we seek to grow in that grace and extend it to others. We strive to define ourselves by what we are for, not what we are against.
We believe in a God who knows us, and who desires to be known. Therefore we embrace a journey of faith that requires us to constantly strive for a personal, intimate and transformative knowledge of God. We strive to be led by God’s Spirit in supporting and encouraging one another in working out our faith.
We believe in a creative God. Therefore we are open to expressing our faith in new and creative ways that reflect the beauty and complexity of our creator. We are called to use our creative gifts in worship and service as we engage with our world. We take joy in the diversity of gifts that allow us to delight God and participate in His ongoing story. We believe in a triune, relational God who calls us to come together as a diverse community of believers. Therefore, we want to walk together, supporting one another physically, emotionally and spiritually. We strive to be a welcoming, inclusive family that goes through the joys and the trials of life together, acknowledging that God uses this community to deepen and mature our faith.
We believe in a God who loves this broken world and wants to reconcile us to Himself. Therefore we are commissioned by Christ to go out into the world, meeting the holistic needs of the local and global community. God calls us to participate in a redemptive work that he has already initiated; in humility, we will partner with others to work alongside and chase after Him.
We believe in a God who is our centre. Therefore where we are on the journey is less important than that we are moving towards a deeper relationship with Christ. We believe and participate in God’s redemptive work in all people, which gives us the freedom to come as we are, and to accept others as they are.
We each are on a unique journey to become who God has created us to be.
