Of the many reasons we thought the 43rd Annual Decorator Showcase at 22 • 22nd Avenue would be exceptional, never could we have imagined it would be because it is the first Showcase home seen in pixels rather than in person. And so, from our screens to yours, the students and community volunteers of San Francisco University High School extend to you, first and foremost, our heartfelt wishes for your health and safety, as well as a warm, elbow-tapping welcome to what is the most inventive Showcase yet. Whether enjoyed on a laptop, desktop, tablet or smartphone, the only thing about this year’s Showcase that is virtual is its presentation; the effort has been every bit as real. This year’s unprecedented creation has benefitted from two robust rounds of inspiration. The first was that of the designers and decorators who labored at breakneck speed to transform this year’s 1926 grand dame—built only eight years after the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic—into a must-see landmark. The second round of inspiration was providing access to the home’s avant-garde spaces from the socially-distant safety of your own home using this ground-breaking digital format. In a year when nothing feels the same, the Decorator Showcase’s importance as a source of funding for University High School’s Financial Aid Program has not changed. At a time of such dire financial uncertainty, your support helps UHS extend increasing amounts of support to students and families, new and returning—ensuring UHS can maintain and continue to invest in a student body with a diversity of thought and talent. Every dollar raised supports the UHS Financial Aid Program, making it possible for motivated students to access an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge.

2020 Committee Co-Chairs From the top: Lauren Deane Evans, Vince Hoenigman, Katie Sears, Susie Boi, Amanda Hoenigman, Frances Hochschild, Donna Liu, Mai Mai Wythes, Teresa Wong-Jones, Lilly Fu, Lisa Hockin, Michelle Molfino, Kamala Mostert, Charlie Hartel, Elizabeth Allor, Wendy Kesser, Juliet Sampson, Liz Villegas, Cynthia McDermott Not pictured: Reva Bhatia, Cecily Cameron, Paul Cooper, Lisa Hogen, Jennifer Kim, Sherman Luk, and Collette Zee.

This year’s house—a lush sanctuary in the city—was designed nearly 100 years ago by William Toepke, the same architect responsible for the Flat Iron Building on Market Street. Today, the home owes its look to some of the Bay Area’s finest contemporary interior and landscape designers, whose vision and creativity are the stars of the show. Their generous collaboration with UHS is a remarkable example of what is possible when high style combines with higher purpose. We thank each designer—as well as the Design Advisory Board, who thoughtfully selected the finalists during the juried competition—for their innovative and beautiful contributions, as well as their flexibility during these unprecedented times. We give warmest thanks to Julia Eells, Head of School, Shaundra Bason, Director of Development and the Development team, including Jenny Bittner Borden, Thelma Garza, Sandra Eggers, Elena Hobden, Mary King and Alezja Metts. We deeply appreciate the utterly exceptional effort you have committed to making this year’s Showcase a success, even as our community responded to a public health emergency, pivoting and flexing through city-wide restrictions and a weeks-long, state-ordered shelter-in-place. Additionally, we are grateful to the over 250 community volunteers across nine different Decorator Showcase Committees who have worked even more months than usual, tirelessly carrying the torch despite unanticipated conditions to create a fabulous experience for all. A heartfelt thank you to the committee chairs for their enthusiastic dedication and leadership. Most importantly, we thank you. Never has there been a time when we have more appreciated the value of “home” as both a place of refuge but also of work and diversion. Your loyalty to our cause this year proves the Show(case) must go on and is a powerful testament to the resilience and dedication of our community as well as a deeply appreciated gift in support of our next generation of leaders. We hope you log-off and leave feeling inspired by the creativity of the designers as well as fulfilled by the support you have generously provided the students of University High School at this especially critical time. Stay safe and be well. 27

True to the spirit of the Roaring 20’s, the cost to construct these two homes would exceed $60,000. Educated at German universities, George H.C. Meyer apprenticed with shipping firms in Liverpool and Hamburg before moving to San Francisco in 1883 from his native homeland seaport of Baltimore, Maryland. At the age of

With the advent of the Municipal Railway in 1912 and new and improved streets extending west, construction of city residence parks followed the fervor of reconstruction after the devastating earthquake of 1906. Sea Cliff, St. Francis Wood, and Forest Hill are a few of the larger more exclusive residence parks constructed concurrently with West Clay Park. All were modeled after the 1905 development of Presidio Terrace, built beside the golf clubhouse on the southern border of the Presidio at Arguello Boulevard.

With strict deed covenants controlling defined minimum construction costs, setback requirements, landscaping guidelines and ownership re s t r ic t ion s , (m i nor it y r a c e s a nd et hnicit ie s need not apply), t he se residential parks were “restricted parks.” “The architecture of San Francisco residence pa rk s is heterogeneous”; owners selected their own architect. George H.C. Meyer selected William Toepke to design the two residences at 10 & 22 22nd Avenue. A residence for himself and his wife Olga at number 22 and an adjacent residence for his daughter Marie Luise, her husband

A native of San Francisco, Toepke began his apprenticeship in architecture in 1886, eventually partnering with Charles I. Haven in 1897. Together the two designed several well-known commercial buildings, the Flat Iron Building at 540 Market Street being their most celebrated. In 1905 Havens and Toepke forayed into the residential architectural field with a house designed and constructed for the wealthy widow Jeannette Merritt in the newly established Presidio Terrace. Only the second residence to be constructed on the much touted cul-du-sac, Merritt’s house was a unique blend of Colonial, Romanesque and Mission Revival detailing. Other noteworthy residences in the vicinity by Toepke, include 2945 Lake Street in Sea Cliff, and 1 19th Avenue, a f inely detailed brick Mediterranean Revival residence at the Presidio Wall. Sadly, George H.C. Meyer died in 1928, shortly after the completion of his lovely three-story, 6,500 sq. ft. estate at 22 22nd Avenue, though it remained home for Mrs. George H.C. Meyer until her death in 1953. George and Olga’s son Wilson, with his wife Mabel, raised their children

A typology originally hailing from Morocco, the riad is traditionally a home built around an interior garden. Terremoto proposes Riad-i-Cal, the California Riad. Geometric but soft, the front garden is a lush oasis of native palms, drifting grasses, and flowering plants. The entry patio provides the space to take it all in while enjoying a cup of Moroccan mint tea or a glass of California wine. Special thanks to: Samantha Dwyer for your patronage and trust. Joel and the team at Bloom & Lawn Landscaping for all your hard work and making our design a reality! Tony Bernard from Brown Jordan for the beautiful furniture Our parents for all their love and support.

N AT U R E A L W AY S W I N S “Nature Always Wins” is a study of the dichotomy between the strength and the fragility of our natural world. A delicate, three-dimensional wallcovering at the entry wall features hand-formed and hand-painted butterflies, inspired by the local Monarch butterfly and representing the delicate nature of our environment. In contrast, the same wall is anchored by a console table of hand-sculpted Sho Sugi Ban cedar and stone, representing nature’s unshakable strength and determination in the face of all that our environment is contending with, from wild fires to rising seas. The foyer design exclusively uses products that are made in California. The design is an exploration of the wealth of resources that exist right in our own backyard. All makers and manufacturers are within a 400 mile radius of the Showcase house, thus lowering the environmental footprint and the overall embodied energy of the design, all while supporting the local economy and the extraordinary artists and fabricators who help to fuel it. D I N I N G R O O M : S A L L E D’ É T U D E Drawing on the French modernist tradition exemplified by Pierre Chareau and others, Kelly Hohla Interiors has composed a room that is elegantly adaptable. Over the last several years, our clients have been asking us to create rooms that function in more than just one way. For this study in modernism, we created a multifaceted dining room that also seamlessly serves as a library, workspace, and gathering spot for cocktails. The jewel of the space is a bespoke, sculptural dining table that can seat a dinner party or be separated to create a casual study space. Look up, and you’ll see its asymmetrical lines mirrored by hand-painted Japanese paper. Rather than a set of dining chairs, we chose a mix of seating that also allows for flexibility: curvy art nouveau-inspired steel chairs, paired with custom channeled benches built for two. A wall of built-in shelves in white oak provides display and storage for books and objects, evoking the feel of a library. This interior space is an homage to craft, characterized by collaborations with 21st century decorative artists. Characterized by innovation, material richness, and an appreciation of history, the Dining Room exemplifies the design connoisseurship that defines all of Kelly Hohla Interiors’ projects. Special thanks to: Our inspiring clients, who allow us to create beauty. KHI Design Team: Alana Dorn, Celeste Barnes-Bremer, Scott Standridge, Laura Getzler & Kristi Freeland — much love. MODERN MEDITERRANEAN B R E A K FA S T N O O K In the breakfast nook, we introduced bolder, contemporary elements to complement the classic-meets-modern style throughout the adjacent kitchen. Curvilinear, sculptural pieces furnish this space, framed by drapery with a hand-painted abstract pattern. The fanciful brass appliques on the surface of the breakfast table are illuminated from above by a jewel-like pendant made of brass and alabaster glass. Nearby, the intersecting arches of the oak room divider are a contemporary take on Art Nouveau. M O D E R N M E D I T E R R A N E A N K I TC H E N Taking cues from the architecture of this Mediterranean-style home, we brought old-world influence to this modern kitchen. Cabinetry, with an updated, diminutive Shaker profile, runs along the perimeter of the room, blending seamlessly with the traditional wainscotting finished in the same shade of earthy, undersaturated green. Nearby, the custom hutch is finished in a rich ebonized oak with a contrasting interior. By choosing a mix of finishes for these pieces, we created the impression of freestanding furniture and a room evolved over time. We contributed to this classic tone by choosing materials that become more storied with age, like matte-yet-luminous honed marble countertops, burnished brass faucets and a natural walnut finish on the island. Special thanks to: Amy and Maddy, and the entire team at Regan Baker Design for their combined effort to make this room possible. My husband Jace for making coffee every morning, taking care of the kids and encouraging me to take on new challenges, including this year’s Showcase! A Z U R E G U E S T B AT H R O O M Tucked away up a short flight of stairs is the Azure Guest Bathroom. Upon entering the bathroom, a wall of deep blue tile evokes a tranquil Mediterranean Sea. The tile, with its curvaceous, yet subtle petal pattern appears to undulate like the sea. This sea of blue is juxtaposed with a black and white marble tile on both the floor and tub wall. The marble, with its elliptical black and white pattern, adds a whimsical, yet grounding element to the bathroom. Gold accents, Moroccan inspired mirror and pendants add warmth and richness to the design. T H E S U N D OW N LO U N G E Imagine a room with such a subtly strong sense of place that it allows you to escape reality. Its heartfelt combination of historical and new furniture prompts the feeling that you have just stepped outside of time. It has rich textures and nuanced colors, which encourage mindfulness of the sensory pleasures in life. Its lighting both soothes, easing stress and tension, and enlivens, waking up the imagination. The Sundown Lounge looks to the deep origins of the word “room,” which was not just a synonym for “space,” but also meant “scope” and “opportunity.” Those who enter are invited to play, listen, divert, entertain. It’s a game room, a cocktail lounge, a space for reading, listening to music and talking the night away. Chroma has created a curved settee for the Sundown Lounge. Featuring hand-turned acrylic legs, leather channel tufting and custom handwoven fabric, the sofa’s curvaceous form gently embraces its sitters. Special thanks to: Above all else, an enormous thanks to the Chroma design team. This endeavor has been a collective labor of love. Thank you Victor, Heidi, Stephen, Naomi, Rommel, Jaidyn, Emily, and Tawnia. Thank you to the Decorator Showcase Committee and San Francisco University High School staff and volunteers for your steadfast support and for bringing this beautiful event to life year after year. To our incredibly generous artisans and vendors who contributed their inspiration, craft, time, and efforts, we thank you. To our friends and family for their unconditional love and support. R A N D O M N AT U R E M E E T S BALANCED GEOMETRY We combined a relaxed California feel with cosmopolitan flair and a sense of joy, seeking harmony between perfection and imperfection. We looked at the apparent randomness of nature in comparison to the balance of geometry. Our driving aesthetic force was the art, grounded in a backdrop influenced by the natural and weathered beauty of the Northern California coast.

Here Cubism’s simple geometric shapes contradict the ideal proportions of established geometry. The furniture arranged on an irregular axis creates unexpected viewpoints, while each vertical plane focuses the eye on colorful art. We paired lines, circles, rectangles and cylinders with free-form shapes and off-set the neutral palette of coarse textures and burnished surfaces with marble, glass and silk velvets, accented with splashes of bright color. Our pairing of organic and refined contemporary Italian and Czech designs with over-scaled furniture, set against white walls, plaster, and curtainless windows, suggests a nod to the eased elegance of design icons Michael Taylor and John Dickinson.

Titled Botanicae, the installation immerses the viewer within a modern rendition of a historical botanical folio. The photographs from this series become objects framed in natural walnut set against a black wall painted to echo the artist’s process. The Latin name of each plant, its country of origin, and San Francisco location is written in classic calligraphy by artist Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls and etched into brass. Working with the SF Botanical Library, Frumerman also produced a large-scale catalogue featuring 30 flowers and plants with mini-histories of each subject. Everyone’s least favorite chore just got more enjoyable. The Laundry Room is one of the workhorses of every household, so bringing a sense of calm and tranquility to this space makes it a more enjoyable experience for all. Inspired by the alluring tree just outside the window, this space is all about a clean, neutral palette and creating movement through textures and different finishes. We wanted to make the chaos of everyday life slowly slip away while performing daily household tasks. The washer and dryer from GE can be hidden away behind retractable cabinet doors or left open when in use, while the closed upper cabinets provide ample storage. Two different cabinet finishes create visual interest while the organic nature of the floors ground the space. Soak & Spin is a refined, natureinspired space where practicality takes the lead. THE LISTENING ROOM

CHAD DORSEY

A second-floor owner’s retreat, was designed for listening to great music, reading, and unwinding in a calm environment. The glazed Terra Cotta walls create the back drop for the bold, yet soothing space. Hand-painted wallpaper on the ceiling creates an abstract visual to draw the eye up and create interest while lounging. The entire space is grounded with a dark emerald green mohair rug, and anchored with a fluted grey marble fireplace by Strike, which is part of a mantel collection by Chad Dorsey. The grey marble extends to custom stone baseboards, handcrafted to mimic the fluting of the fireplace. The sofa, while sleek in shape, is meant to have a causal laid-back approach with its unstructured fabric, and the corner statement chair feels handed down over time. Handmade lighting was selected, each with a unique size, scale, and material, specifically for each task in the room. All of this is centered with a custom-designed shelving system for music and reading materials, and a handmade display table. Special thanks to: Chad Dorsey Design’s 2020 Showcase Design team: Alfredo Rodriguez, Adolfo Elizondo, Cayce Davis, Luis Olivares. Kevin Kolanowski, the creative genius behind Fuse Lighting. T H E L I S T E N I N G R O O M B AT H R O O M The Listening Room Bathroom was designed to feel airy, cool, and modern as if you are entering a bathroom at a favorite cocktail lounge. The wall panels are a deep terra cotta Quartz slab, which were then cut into eight-inch-wide by nine-feet-tall pieces and beveled at the edge to create the illusion of height in the small space against the light marble floors. A radial edge on the corners of the shower glass give the space a lighter, more open feel and a sculptural element. The floating custom marble vanity with fluted edges mimic the Listening Room Fireplace, and handcrafted opal glass sconces with cognac leather bases flank the mirror and add a bespoke quality. HER DRESSING ROOM Echoing the ethereal walls and impactful art of the principal bedroom, “her” dressing closet is a haven within the suite. With a soft palette of grays, natural oak and brass, K Interiors has blended both luxe and organic materials to add an opulent dimension to this California home. At the heart of the room is a silk rug adorned by a graphic, hand-painted ottoman. It sits under a trio pendant that echoes the shape of her jewelry and reflects a soft glow. Custom-designed metal inserts line the drawers of the floating dresser while the oak detail of the closet adds an element of surprise. Tying it all together is an oversized mirror used to ref lect the room back to her as she fingers through each piece of clothing to dress for the day. Much like the waves that roll in and out of the on-looking beach, this principal bedroom compels us to exhale out our daily stresses and inhale in this sanctuary space. Circulating through the room is a feeling of relaxed glamour molded by the materials carefully chosen by K Interiors. Buttercream velvet and antique mirror make up a floor to ceiling headboard to reflect the grandeur of the Golden Gate Bridge waiting right outside the window. Brass finishes accent the custom bed whilst natural marble provides a grounding surface for the nightstands. Custom wood panels add texture to the wall and provide a juxtaposing backdrop to the dripping chain pendant lights. Soft, decorative paint lines each wall telling us a story of light and dark converging together to create something truly beautiful. Handmade ceramics and sculptures have been curated with just as much care as the collection of dark, impactful photography. Finally, a hand painted duvet cocoons us and reminds us to not only live amongst, but sleep surrounded by art.

LU M B ER SLU M B ER High amid towering treetops, imagination takes flight: This children’s bedroom for two boys mimics the magic of childhood tree forts and endless adventure at every turn. A custom-made cabin bed is elevated by stairs that double as book storage; to the left, a twin mattress peeks out from wooden slats, evoking the feeling of teetering among the branches of an enchanted forest. To the right, a wooden platform delivers a play space illuminated by a colorful string of lights. A second twin bed is half recessed underneath the built-in platform for a cozy feel. Below the cabin bed, a full size closet with drawers provides ample storage. In the middle of the room, a children’s play table and stools sit atop a jute carpet, illuminated by a massive scale pendant light that calls to mind the wingspan of a soaring bird; nearby, a custom-made blackboard invites artistic expression. For the intrepid explorer, a walk-in closet has been re-imagined into a private nook lined with tree wallpaper and book ledges on two of its walls for a forest-themed reading hideaway. To the right of the window, a swing hangs from the ceiling — the ultimate addition to a treasured tree house. L E A R N I N G T O F LY This bathroom is an ode to little boys everywhere who play hard and get dirty. What this space lacks in square footage it makes up for (and then some) in special details throughout. Emerald green prismatic floor tiles adorn the floor to create playful movement and set the tone for the space. A custom walnut vanity and shower niche are covered in a dramatic marble slab aptly called “Mojito” with shades of lime and mint. The graduated stripe tile shower enclosure leads your eye up to the last surprise: a gravity-defying “paper” airplane installation. This kid’s bedroom is based on two ideas that we are interested in: reducing the saturation of children’s lives with tons of “stuff” and providing design solutions for young people that don’t fall along the lines of binary gender conformity. We turned to Japanese minimalism for inspiration; and were particularly inspired by the green and yellow hues of the moss growing on the pine tree outside. Although the room is on the smaller side, we have provided a significant amount of storage space as well as space for homework, relaxing, and a bunk to invite a friend for sleepovers. We’ve incorporated textiles that are subtle, chic, and durable, but also super soft to amplify cozy appeal. NO DRAMA LLAMA Between two children’s bedrooms lies the enchanting Jack & Jill bathroom - classic yet whimsical at every turn. Conceived as a colorful and gender neutral space, the central element in the room’s design is an exquisite hand-cut mosaic tile featuring playful foxes and llamas prancing across a background of semiprecious Peridot, Lapis Lazuli, Citrine and Ruby jewelled glass. The enchanting pattern brings rhythm and movement to a small space and evokes a sense of elevated child’s play. A red lacquered vanity with bamboo accents grounds the room with sophistication, while the traditional subway tile receives an unexpected twist with its preppy ticking stripe. Above the vanity sits a scalloped mirror with two custom sconces adorned in a lattice detail and custom shades. Each detail has been meticulously designed to tie into one another. The result - a cheerful and uplifting shared space where siblings can start and end the day with a smile. SILHOUETTES In a WFH world, we ask ourselves, can a sitting room only really be a sitting room? Tucked away at the end of a hallway, we imagined a tranquil space removed from the day-to-day activity. We composed the room as an ensemble of human activity, layered with foliate motifs, vibrant neutrals, and blue, green, and cranberry hints. Our draped daybed with traditional hydrangea-patterned fabric provides a sense of comfort for lounging and napping. A sinuously shaped leather armchair represents technological craft and emphasizes clean and serene simplicity for reading or chatting. An original Arts and Crafts chair adds structure for desk-side writing and working. We created a catchall for conversation and reflection, focused on shape, geometry, and texture to harmonize a group of distinct domestic elements. In our room Silhouettes, we bridge our interests in dressmaker details, technological craft, and historical references, married with atmospheric effect. Special thanks to: Our incredible team Peter Karel and Yvonne Ying; Kendra Boutell and Natalia Gomez. Our generous collaborators Mitchell Denburg and Grey Lux; Marie Farneth and Maddalena Forcella. REAR GARDEN We approached the design for this space with an eye to enhancing and building upon the sites inherent grandeur and history. Playing with the interaction of scale and material, we’ve deconstructed and reconstructed the site to work as a series of outdoor rooms. The social spaces, defined by large slabs of raw stone and planting, transition from grounded formality to organic romanticism. Kids run through the native meadow and swing from the majestic Cedar tree. Special thanks to: Samantha Dwyer for your patronage and trust. It also provides a calm and soothing space to enjoy the various art works and sculpture on display. GREEN WITH ENVY

JEFFREY NEVE

We were inspired to create a bathroom that in spite of its function still delivers the drama. Every room begins with a pilot and for this bathroom we started with the deep teal green clouds in the Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. Adding the twill ombre tile to the walls above the bathtub created a secondary texture that softens the white in the room and ties in the textured gray stone floor. Instead of the usual sconce, we decided on the ‘Basa’ table lamp to light our space and a sculpted, antiqued mirror that compliments the finely detailed design of the vessel sink. The deep greens and earth tones in this bathroom are richly layered and help create a sense of calm and luxury. Special thanks to: The San Francisco Decorator Showcase Committee, the volunteers and staff who make this event possible and especially Jenny Bittner Borden for her support and patience. T H E L I Q U I D LO U N G E At the intersection of music, media and modern art lies the Liquid Lounge. Designed with tactile elements to spark the imagination, this room was conceived as an inspired escape for a young couple – far away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. While the grand architectural style remains, the interior was reimagined with a contemporary blend of shapes and colors. Curvilinear lines create repetitive forms with both hard and soft elements that ebb and flow throughout the room. A striking bamboo pendant by David Trubridge floats above the room casting mystical patterns downward. Dramatic artwork provides an experiential introduction to the world of modern multimedia. With a belief that great design is not limited to a single sense, a variety of materials, patterns and textures are used to build interest as you move throughout the room. The result is a space that feels more interactive than passive, more tactile than tame, more ebullient than ennui. The Liquid Lounge delivers on all. Special thanks to: Thank you to our vendors and partners for your generous contributions in supporting San Francisco University High School’s financial aid program.

C A L A M E ZC A L To the corner of the Liquid Lounge lies a moody Mezcal bar. Harmonic metal chains delineate the bar from the Liquid Lounge in an unexpected, artistic way. Guests are immediately enveloped in a deep desert haze with its smoky hand-painted mural of agave plants and palms. There is a nightclub vibe to the room. A dark rose banquette and geometric table welcome guests to linger. Unexpected angles and shapes bring movement to the room while unconventional lines and brighter tones add a bit of funk with a nod to the Memphis movement. The area behind the bar features an imaginative mix of materials with a steel semicircle that is lit from behind. Ipe wood complements the steel backing and holds shelving for all of the bar’s necessities. A black marble top and cerused oak bar add a rich, textural feel. A pair of hand carved brass sconces light both sides of the bar bringing another element to the space. Cala Mezcal offers its guests an immersive escape from the daily grind - the perfect place to unwind with friends and spend an evening in relaxed reverie. WINE CELLAR AND BAR AREA The Bar and Wine Room take on a dramatic and sophisticated tone for this contemporary space. Acrylic and steel wine racks flank a contemporary sideboard for sorting and storing. Interior wine room walls are covered in Japanese Yaki-Sugi charred wood as a dark counterpoint. The area outside the cellar has a black oak standing table which is used for tasting and a large glass door storage armoire which resembles the bottoms of wine bottles. The walls finish the feel of this area with old world plaster with a bit of contemporary sparkle. A wet bar completes this ensemble with matte glass doors and floating stone shelves. Lastly, the two wings of “Icarus” on sculpture stands flanking the wine cellar entry remind us not to overindulge or fly too high! san fr ancisco university high school O UR MI SS ION San Francisco University High School welcomes students of demonstrated motivation and ability to engage in an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge. We are a school where adults believe in the promise of every student, and together we work to build and sustain a community of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self. O UR HI STORY In 1973, the founders of San Francisco University High School, believing in the educational value of diversity and pluralism, imagined a school that drew upon the exciting variety and resources of San Francisco and that developed creative, capable, and socially responsible leaders. They envisioned a school that would achieve both equity and excellence, encompassing the arts, academics, athletics, and community engagement. In order to fulfill this vision, a catalytic context was created to nurture a community of inquiry, risk-taking, experimentation, and personal and intellectual growth for both students and teachers. In the more than forty years since our founding, University has excelled as a leader in secondary education, building strong and deepening ties among its students, teachers, administrators, families, alumni, and the larger community. We intend to be at the forefront of changing high school culture, affirming our fundamental commitment to intellectual challenge and vitality while simultaneously responding to the demands and opportunities of today.

Our Vision and Values In 2016, after a two year process of far-reaching self-study, meaningful collaboration, and profound discovery, our community officially adopted a new strategic direction charting the school’s next era as it continues to execute on our core values of Inquiry, Care, Integrity, Agency, and Interconnection. We have developed eight strategic pathways by which we will build on a legacy of excellence while remaining strategically reflective in our journey to build an educational experience that is transformational not transactional. • Design a more integrated educational program • Support and attract talented faculty • Lower the barriers to access for students

SUMMERBRIDGE SAN FR ANCISCO

Summerbridge 2019: Students, faculty and staff enjoyed a visit from Mayor London Breed

Summerbridge is an award-winning, tuition-free summer and after-school academic enrichment and advocacy program. Founded in 1978 by Dennis Collins, then head of San Francisco University High School, and two pioneering faculty members, Lois Loufbourrow and Mal Singer, the program they envisioned would utilize the resources of University High School to serve the city of San Francisco. For 40 years, Summerbridge has advanced three primary goals: 1. Preparing ambitious middle school students from underresourced circumstances to enter and thrive in wellmatched high schools, for the purpose of securing admission to, succeeding in, and graduating from college. 2. Providing intensive summer teaching fellowships for high school and college students who are passionate about the power of education, and creating meaningful volunteer experiences throughout the academic year for members of the UHS and San Francisco communities. 3. Transforming lives through the unique and powerful relationship between the Summerbridge and UHS communities and their families. These three complementary goals unify our work.

A B R I E F H I STO RY O F O U R ACCO M P LI S H M E NTS :

• Transformed the lives of over 1,500 Bay Area middle school students. • Provided a teaching foundation to more than 800 high school and college-aged aspiring teachers. • Served as a model to be replicated in 24 sites across the United States. Q U ICK FAC TS (S U M M E R 2019) :

• 93 middle school students representing 34 different middle schools. • 100% of Summerbridge 8th graders will enter high-performing, college-preparatory high schools. • 64% of participants will be the first generation in their families to attend college. • 53% of Summerbridge students qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch. • 98% of our students self-identify as a race other than white.
