With over 80% of our student body participating in at least one sport, Red Devil Athletics plays a significant role in the student experience at UHS. We take great pride in developing both the highly competitive athlete and the entry-level competitor. With 15%-20% of our graduates moving on to continue their athletic careers in college, the potential exists to build the skills, values, and work habits to contribute at the next level. While we enjoy the success and growth of these athletes, it is of equal significance to us to provide opportunities for student-athletes who are new to a sport to gain the experience of participating in team athletics and enjoying the camaraderie and fellowship that permeate our program. We believe that UHS Athletics highlights the best that physical activity, competition, and team play can offer a young student-athlete.

COACHES CARIN MARRS & OTIS CAMPBELL The Red Devil Track and Field program is operating on all cylinders.

Over the past five years, the roster has grown from just over 30 to over 70 student-athletes, over 15% of the entire UHS student body. The team has captured five North Coast Section titles over this period and has rewritten the school’s all-time record book. Who has led the team to these achievements?

Head coach Carin Marrs (eight years) is the driving force. A five-time state champion in Virginia (cross country and 3200m) and Division 1 college athlete, Carin approaches coaching with incredible energy and care. Her Red Devil Weekly communications are loved by the entire XC and T&F communities, both for their insightful recognition of achieving athletes of all levels and the creative and humorous angles she reports on about the team.

This past year, 93% of her team called her ‘One of the best coaches I have ever had’ in their end-of-year survey.

But a complicated program like T&F requires more than just a single effective coach. One of the unsung members of the coaching staff is long-time assistant coach Otis Campbell. Coach O (11 years) focuses most years on the jumpers. He coached Eve King ’07, who became one of the best high jumpers in the state and a heptathlete at Yale, where she served as Captain of the T&F team.

Coach O has coached youth from all areas of the City since 1994 and formed Team Onalysis, a local T&F club that has helped him produce over 40 athletes who have competed at the USAT&F Junior Olympics, with two-thirds of those medaling! One of our current team members says, ‘Coach O is just about the coolest dude I have ever met. I know he loves coaching me, and because of that, one look from him can motivate me more than words ever could.’

UHS Athletics – the teams, coaches, and competition – have undoubtedly been one of the best parts of my high school experience. During my four years at UHS, I ran cross country in the fall, played soccer in the winter, and played lacrosse in the spring. I even joined track and field my senior year!

In the summer going into my freshman year, I joined the cross country team with little experience and expectations. Racing a 5K!? Strides and excels!? Strength and conditioning!?

Little did I know, I was joining one of the most successful high school running programs in the state. I love that UHS cross country brings together many different students (usually 60+ athletes, most with no prior experience) from across the school. Every day after school, I always looked forward to running in the Presidio and Golden Gate Park with the team while telling each other funny stories from our day and recounting XC memories. Some of my favorites have been winning BCL and NCS titles, beach team bonfires, and long runs that end with a spontaneous ocean swim. Each year, I couldn’t wait to go on a road trip to Los Angeles together for the infamous hot and hilly Mt. SAC Invitational and to Fresno for the state championship. Most people think of cross country as an individual sport, but at UHS, we come together every year as a competitive and close-knit team.

On my soccer and lacrosse teams, I’ve gotten to play under equally amazing coaches and experienced the same camaraderie. Our soccer and lacrosse coaches are so knowledgeable, having played the sport their entire life and coached full time, and have been key to our team’s growth. Rob Salmon, our head lacrosse coach, and Chance Daniel, our head soccer

coach, have been mentors for me on and off the field, whether bantering about high school or helping me through the college process. It is the combination of club and non-club players that make the experience so special on both teams. Although I never played a club in high school, I always felt so welcomed by my teammates. By playing at such a high level alongside other passionate athletes, I found my place on each team, gaining confidence and becoming the aggressive, gritty player that I am. Through going on overnights, connecting with secret sisters, or jamming out to music before warm-ups, I’ve become close friends with both upperclassmen and underclassmen. I’ll never forget scoring a goal, in soccer, during my first Big Red Friday experience as a freshman. The support I felt of the entire UHS community cheering me on got me absolutely psyched!

Participating in these three sports, I’ve not only won BCL, NCS, and state championships but also made some of my best friends. UHS Athletics has played a huge role in what has been an unforgettable four years at University. It is with great pride that I will be a Red Devil for life.

MEET THE KENNEDYS One would be hard-pressed to find a more impactful family on UHS athletics than the Kennedys. This family of five is etching a legacy that will go down in Red Devil lore when it is all said and done. The eldest son, Charlie ‘20, was named SFIAC San Francisco Male Athlete of the Year to contribute to the crosscountry, basketball, and track & field teams. By his senior year, he captained all three squads. This, after winning the NorCal Division 3 Championship and competing in the basketball State Finals his junior year. He would go on to lead the team to an undefeated regular season in the BCL West as a senior. In cross-country, he earned All-State honors as a freshman on a team that would claim the State Championship a year later, in addition to two NCS Championships during his time. He won league titles multiple years in both the 800m and 1600m races on the track. In his junior year, he won an NCS Championship in the 1600m and was named League MVP. This left his brother, Joey, ‘23, with considerably large shoes to fill. In Joey’s two seasons on the basketball court, he has never lost a regular-season league game. As a sophomore, he was at his best against tough competition, tallying 30 points & 13 rebounds versus Riordan, 28 points, ten boards against a highly ranked Piedmont team, and 20 points, 11 rebounds versus perennial powerhouse Bishop O’Dowd. His contributions and leadership helped guide the team to a #1 ranking in the state and Team of the Year for Division 4 by CalHiSports.com. He capped off the year by earning All-State honors, as well as being named the SF Chronicle Player of the Year.

Those who know athletic families can attest, the baby is usually the most impressive of all. Kate ‘25 entered this year primed to be a strong contributor to both the volleyball and basketball programs. If the efforts of her brothers are any indication, it is safe to say the sky’s the limit for her.

And where might all of this athleticism come from? Look no further than their father, Duncan, who is the UHS Strength and Conditioning Coach. Duncan starred at the University of Wisconsin (where Charlie now attends) in rowing. He and his wife, Katherine, who is an active member of the Sports Boosters Club, have instilled in their children the work ethic and dedication that has been and is wreaking havoc on courts and tracks throughout the state. With many chapters yet to be written in the Kennedy family legacy, there remains a great deal of gratitude and excitement in the UHS community as we all look forward to what comes next.
