Prometheus With its dramatic tale of personal sacrifice and enlightenment, the Greek legend of Prometheus has proven irresistible to artists over the centuries. In a two-week focus on this story of man, cosmos, and fire, Esa-Pekka Salonen leads Prometheus-inspired works by three iconoclastic composers: Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, and Alexander Scriabin. This is music of the myths that make us, music of the then and now.

ORCHESTRAL SERIES

Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex FRI-E JUN 10 at 7:30pm SAT-D JUN 11 at 7:30pm SUN-B JUN 12 at 2pm

SEMISTAGED EVENT!

Esa-Pekka Salonen has said “ritual is at the very heart of Stravinsky’s craft.” With the austere and incantatory Oedipus Rex, Stravinsky brings to life a classic Greek myth of power, deception, and heartbreak in a voice that is only his. The Symphony of Psalms turns to an altogether different ritual, cloaking three familiar religious texts in a mantle of drama and timelessness. Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor Peter Sellars director Sean Panikkar tenor (Oedipus) J’Nai Bridges mezzo-soprano (Jocasta) Willard White bass-baritone (Creon/Messenger/Tiresias) Laurel Jenkins dancer San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Ragnar Bohlin director San Francisco Symphony IGOR STRAVINSKY Oedipus Rex [Semi-staged] IGOR STRAVINSKY Symphony of Psalms [Semi-staged] these concerts, a part of the barbro and

bernard osher semi-staged production fund, are made possible by a generous gift from barbro and bernard osher.

OUR PATRON PROMISE AS WE NAVIGATE TOGETHER INTO THE 2021-22 SEASON, WE PROMISE TO BE THERE FOR YOU JUST AS YOU CONTINUE TO BE THERE FOR US.

We continue to be focused on creating exceptional performances and experiences that engage audiences and expand their connections to live orchestral music, to each other, and the world around them.

We pledge to be flexible, empathetic, and accommodating should you be unable to safely attend an event.

If an event needs to be rescheduled or canceled, we will let you know as soon as possible, providing you with the choice of ticket donations, gift certificates, exchanges, and refunds.

We remain committed to bringing the best in music to our stages, while keeping our audiences, musicians, staff, and volunteers safe. For information on current safety protocols at Davies Symphony Hall, please visit sfsymphony.org/safety.

Thank you to our Institutional Partners The San Francisco Symphony is exceedingly grateful to its corporate, foundation, and government partners for their generous support of the outstanding concerts, impactful educational programs, and engaging community events we create for people across the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
