TROPAIA EXERCISES
Tropaia Exercises include the awards ceremony in which Georgetown University honors the outstanding achievements of its graduating students, faculty, and staff. Traditionally held the day before Commencement, these exercises recognize graduating students who have demonstrated academic leadership and accomplishment during their time at Georgetown. In addition to acknowledging academic honors, we also award students, faculty, and staff special prizes for achievement.
The word tropaia is the plural form of the ancient Greek word Τρόπαιον which refers to a monument celebrating a military victory. Usually, these were constructed of wood, though sometimes of bronze, and they were often decorated with captured weaponry. The word in the context of today’s celebration means “trophies” or “awards.”
