Dear SFS Community, It is with great pleasure that I introduce our Annual Report for the academic year 2014-15. We aim to give you an overview of both our financial health as well as the key indicators for our students’ attainment and extra curricular performance.

Achieving academic excellence is at the heart of our work as educators and we are happy to share with you the commendable results of our students throughout the school. Compiling these results is an important process and allows us as a school both to celebrate our achievements and inspire us to maintain and improve our performance in all areas of school life.

The most successful schools in the world are always those who are striving to improve. There is never room for complacency in the best schools and Seoul Foreign School aspires to be one of those schools. As such we are committed to developing the best programmes, resources, and facilities. But primarily it is about developing the best teaching and faculty. Consistently striving towards teaching excellence will be our central focus as we recruit, retain and support teachers of quality to work alongside you and your children. Our goal is to provide an education that they can look back on with a sense of pride, enjoyment and accomplishment.

The Annual Fund provides an opportunity for the community to support the educational environment of excellence impacting SFS students. Last year, unrestricted gifts were used to upgrade facilities and purchasing of equipment in the Secondary Media Centre.

The Annual Fund will continue to provide resources for SFS to help enhance programs, facility upgrades and faculty development.

Seoul Foreign School’s US non-profit entity with a 501 (c)(3) status, permits the receipt of contributions, which may be tax-deductible. *The SFS Endowment are funds where only the interest is collected while principle funds remain in perpetuity.

Elementary & Middle School The NWEA (North-West Evaluation Association) Test is designed to measure student progress and is administered three times during the year. Each student is tested both for growth in reading, math and language usage and for proficiency in the same areas.

These individual scores help teachers place students in appropriate achievement groups and detect progress with the previous test. In the table key, EARCOS stands for East Asia Regional Council of Schools.

A RIT (Rasch Unit) score is an estimation of a student’s instructional level and also measures student progress or growth in school. Similar to a chart on which you mark a child’s height to show growth over time, MAP assessments do the same, except they measure mathematics, reading, and language usage.

The RIT scale is an equal-interval scale much like feet and inches on a yardstick. It is used to chart a child’s academic growth from year to year. Educators expect RIT scores to increase over time.

Our Elementary and Middle School Students Map Scores continue to shine above their peer groups 100% of the time. Not only that, but as students successfully move through Seoul Foreign School grade levels, the degree of seperation gets larger. Our 8th Grade Students on average score at least 10 points ahead of the EARCOS average and at least 19 points above the international school average in every assessment.

High School SFS IB Average SFS continues to see significant growth in all areas of the IB program. As the graph below illustrates, we had record number of full diploma students this year with a high pass ratio. In addition, one of our students scored a 44, the highest individual score in the history of our IB program (begun in 1980).

When compared to world averages the vast majority of SFS classes were above world average, and this year IB English, Math and Science classes at SFS exceeded expectations. Globally, the IB is recognized by over 2545 Universities and Colleges in over 75 countries.

SFS believes that the IB program is an excellent preparation for success in post graduate studies and life beyond.

23 students or 30.6% achieved what SFS calls its ÂŤpremium gradesÂť (36 or over).

This is the highest percentage ever at SFS.

The IGCSE results at SFS are outstanding and reflect the hard work of our students and teachers involved in the IGCSE program. The experience of completing courses that are two-years in length followed by a set of external examinations, not only rewards the students with a qualification from the University of Cambridge, but also helps to prepare them for the IB Diploma, a program with a similar structure.

Scholastic Assessment Test SAT

SFS students continue to far exceed the US National Average of combined SAT scores.

British School In the British School, a number of assessments are used to benchmark the students’ progress and reported on the Students’ Progress Reports during the year. There are no ‘passes’ or ‘fails’ in these assessments—they provide a ‘snapshot’ of each of our students at that point in their education.

During Key Stages 1-3 (Y1-Y9), progress in National Curriculum subjects is assessed against seven levels. At the end of Key Stage 2 (Y6), the level will reflect the child’s national test results in Maths and English. The UK average is Level 4; the majority of SFBS students are expected to achieve level 5.

Despite all the competition, it is by far the best school in korea. It provides an amazing and diverse learning experience for its students.

An average of 87% of faculty renewed their contracts during the past seven years.

The community and its environment continue to be one of the School’s strengths in the retention of its faculty.
