Fire Station No. 48 Overland Park, Kansas

The 10,700 SF Overland Park Fire Station #48 is designed to be expanded to a 2-company station as the community grows and the service area densifies. The station is a double depth drive -through facility with primary and secondary exits and return paths. An option to incorporate a third bay and additional sleeping quarters to accommodate Johnson County MedAct was also considered. The station / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

Bonner Springs Government Services Center Bonner Springs, Kansas

/ SFS ARCHITECTURE /

SFS collaborated with the City of Bonner Springs to plan and design a new Government Services Center. The project includes the

12

adaptive reuse of the historic school building for City Hall and the construction of a new 13,000 SF Police Station on an adjacent site. The 28,000 SF historic school building had been unoccupied for nearly 30 years and required extensive rehabilitation. The new 13,800 SF Police Station building includes two levels. The upper level is the Administrative Level and includes the public lobby, training room, interview rooms and administrative offices. The lower level is the Operations Level and includes a processing/intox room, bonding, armory/weapons storage, evidence processing and storage, locker rooms and squad rooms. The Police Facility also includes a sally port for detainee transport and to accommodate the City ’s animal control vehicle and an ambulance unit. Similar to a fire station, the mission critical nature of this public safety facility required the building to be designed to meet IBC Category 4 for essential structures.

Parsons Public Safety Center (Fire + Police) Parsons, Kansas

SFS is working with the City of Parsons, Kansas on a feasibility study that includes a space needs assessment, architectural concept design and community engagement services for a new Public Safety Center. The project involves operational and physical evaluation of current conditions, addressing current needs, and future growth for the Police and Fire Department. An estimated project budget, project program, and conceptual level drawings will serve as the basis / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

for a public safety sales tax referendum

14

and design and construction for the new facility. The new facility will be sited on 3.43 acres of city-owned property. Following a successful referendum, the SFS will provide complete design and construction administration services.

Central Jackson County Fire Protection District Fire Station No. 6 Grain Valley, Missouri

/ SFS ARCHITECTURE /

SFS is currently working with the CJCPFD on a new fire station located in Grain Valley, MO as part of its objective to meet the

18

growing coverage demands of its district. The 16,000 SF fire station will provide living quarters for 6 firefighters, including one captain’s quarters. The station will be a 4-bay double deep drive -through facility housing a variety of active and reserve apparatus including rescue, suppression, administrative and medical/EMS. Sleeping quarters are organized in a suite concept providing acoustical privacy to promote sleep equity and individual comfort needs. The station will be designed to respond to the residential neighborhood context with lower slung eave lines, masonry siding and deep overhangs. Four-fold bay doors will be installed on the exiting side of the bay to facilitate faster and safer responses.

Basehor Police Station Basehor, Kansas

SFS was recently hired to conduct a space needs analysis for a new Police Department facility in the City of Basehor, Kansas. SFS will develop a space needs program identifying all current operational needs of the departments involved, as well as anticipated growth for the next 15+ years. Program elements include spaces for administration, investigations, patrol operations, courtroom and / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

support services, evidence and property,

20

processing and storage, conference and community rooms, locker rooms, interview/interrogation rooms, and indoor firing range, among others.

Fire Station No. 41 Replacement Programming + Design Overland Park, Kansas

/ SFS ARCHITECTURE /

SFS has completed the design for the replacement of Fire Station No. 41 with a 16,000 SF, 4-bay, 3-company station on the

24

existing property. The new station will feature a two-level fitness facility with direct access to outdoor expanded training areas, gender neutral bathrooms, office accommodations for Johnson County MedAct, and private sleeping rooms with 3-shift lockers separated but directly accessed from the bunk rooms. Three scenarios on multiple sites were explored during early planning: 1) costs to maintain fire operations on-site with an extensive renovation; 2) relocate the crews to a temporary facility then demolish and build new; 3) maintaining operations through a two phase construction period building the new station on the site while keeping the existing station operational. Scenario 2 was selected as the approach after careful evaluation of the disadvantages and advantages for each. The project is currently under construction.

Fire Station No. 3 and Police Substation Lenexa, Kansas

SFS provided a site location study, feasibility study, space needs programming/planning and complete A/E and interior design services for this campus style facility which is located in a rapidly expanding suburban community. The three main functions of this 31,000 SF facility are fire protection, training and police operations.

/ SFS ARCHITECTURE /

The Fire Station includes living quarters for

26

up to 10 firefighters and EMS personnel, three drive through apparatus storage bays and firefighter support.

Fire Station No. 2 and Department Headquarters Belton, Missouri

SFS and team members provided complete A/E services for two fire stations for the City of Belton. Fire Station No. 2 and Department Headquarters is a new 23,500 SF facility featuring an Emergency Management Facility and Operations Center. The building construction for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is “hardened” to withstand up to 165 mph winds (or an EF1 tornado). In the event of an emergency, city officials will be able to run the city from this facility for several days. Building

/ SFS ARCHITECTURE /

materials used to prevent collapse include

30

reinforced concrete masonry walls grouted full and a bar joist roof structure supporting a reinforced concrete slab on a metal deck roof system.

KCFD Fire Station No. 19 Kansas Cit y, Missouri

Fire Station No. 19’s layout was designed to accommodate the important elements of fire station design; quickness of response, separation and privacy of its / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

users, functional relationships with corresponding components and reduction of

32

maintenance through the use of durable of materials. The 2-story, 18,000 SF configuration keeps the firefighter in close contact with the apparatus bays at all times. Direct routes of access are available from the heavy use areas of the living quarters, kitchen, dining and weight room. Access via fire poles also allows for quick response to the bays from the second story sleeping areas, which are supplemented with stairs that provide access to the bays.

Central Jackson County Fire Protection District Fire Training Facility Blue Springs, Missouri

SFS worked with the CJCFD to determine the optimum location for a new training facility in the Blue Springs area. Multiple sites were assessed and evaluated for appropriateness to program requirements and budgetary restraints. An existing 60,000 SF manufacturing facility was identified for analysis and subsequently purchased by the District to house the new facility. SFS provided / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

full planning and design services for the adaptive

34

re -use of the existing warehouse into a high-tech training center for the District.

9/11 Memorial Overland Park, Kansas

SFS collaborated with the City of Overland Park, OPFD and community leaders to create a memorial honoring those fallen First Responders and the thousands of other victims who lost their lives as the result of the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001. Featured elements include a beam recovered from the debris of the fallen World Trade Center towers, educational panels depicting the journeys of the four planes brought down on 9/11, a panel engraved with victim names, benches for quiet reflection, a weeping wall and donor panels. The memorial is adjacent to OPFD’s / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

fire training facility, a very deliberate reminder to the

36

First Responders who pass through the facility of the ultimate sacrifice they may be called upon to make in the line of duty.

Big Bull Creek Park Police Substation + Maintenance Facility Edgerton, Kansas

SFS designed a new maintenance facility and park police substation for Johnson County’s Big Bull Creek Park. The 5,500 SF maintenance facility includes Park manager and staff offices, restrooms, locker room with showers, general storage, breakroom, tool room, parts room, two service bays, mechanical room and support spaces. The Park Police Substation includes Captain and police/staff offices, locker room with shower, small interview room, work room,

general storage and secured storage with gun safe

38

and temporary property storage. Site improvements include secured parking, equipment storage barn, signage and landscaping.

Sunflower Fire Station Preliminary Design DeSoto, Kansas

SFS developed a program and preliminary concept for Johnson County Facilities Management and Northwest Consolidated Fire District’s new Sunflower Fire Station. During the pre -design phase, SFS worked with the County and Fire District to identify the critical needs and objectives for the project, including: • Direct and efficient pathways to the “first out” bays from the living and sleeping quarters, eliminating turns and unnecessary movement during an emergency call. • Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate future growth and potential phasing strategies. • Clear separation of functions/user groups / SFS ARCHITECTURE /

(operations, administration, public, and county

40

sheriff) and efficient access and maneuvering through the facility. SFS is currently providing design services for the new station, which will provide a clean and safe work environment for the first responders that promotes physical readiness, healthy living, and overall behavioral health wellbeing.
