STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Santa Fe Prep is an ambitious and diverse learning community dedicated to active discourse. We value our place in the community of Santa Fe, which enriches and defines us. We cultivate qualities of character, scholarship, and citizenship in our students that inspire them to act responsibly and compassionately at home, at school, and in the world.

Through the many dialogues that unfold on campus each day, our students exercise their minds in active inquiry. The discourse of Santa Fe Prep promotes the joy of discovery, the power of critical thinking and reflection, and the thrill of creativity. Our commitment to collaborative learning fosters an inclusive school environment grounded in trust, where students honor and respect each other and themselves.

WELCOME TO SANTA FE PREP’S 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT IT TAKES A VILLAGE This Annual Report demonstrates how the care and generosity of the Santa Fe Prep community have advanced our ambitious learning environment and ensured that our school continues to successfully provide what our statement of purpose lays out before us. I hope you read with admiration and pride about the cultivation that takes place both on and off campus for our students, and how, with the support of our families and friends, our students become responsible, capable and engaged citizens.

Last year, nearly 1,000 donors contributed $1.7 million to Prep, including $642,517 to the Annual Fund. These gifts touch the lives of every student, faculty and staff member and help keep Prep at the forefront of secondary education in New Mexico. Lists of our wonderful supporters can be found on page 12.

REPORT FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE?

Prep’s founders planted their tree many decades ago. It has grown into the flourishing, diverse and ambitious community that we know today, embracing our curious, creative and thoughtful students.

The recent passing of Dr. Ned Goodrich, the last living signer of Santa Fe Prep’s Articles of Incorporation, provided me with an opportunity to pause and reflect upon Prep’s role in cultivating purpose. While purpose can unfold and manifest in many different ways, as you will see in this annual report, cultivation might best be viewed in the context of a garden. Cultivation of a garden requires hard work, nutrients, attentive care, and a belief that the steps we take today are essential to and will lead to, a fruitful future.

REPORT FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL DON’T BE TIMID

In a meeting with a donor last year, a supporter who has known Prep for decades, I was told the following: “You’re a grown-up institution now, and it’s time to make a big fat shift. Don’t be timid.”

She was referring to our capacity, developed across five decades, to be more ambitious in our service to the Santa Fe community. Thanks to the many donors to our $14 million capital campaign, Generating Impact, we have been able to do just that. With $3.2 million raised for tuition assistance through our Strategic Impact Fund, and an additional $5 million committed to our endowment (now over $17 million), we are in a position to admit and fund the most aspiring and talented students from across Santa Fe. Most independent day schools across the country offer tuition assistance to 20% of their families; currently, nearly 40% of students at Prep receive need-based tuition assistance. The demographic shift in our student body has been profound, immediate, and must continue, through our Annual Fund and other means.

As well, we owe a huge thanks to Andrew Davis for founding The Davis New Mexico Scholars, housed at Santa Fe Prep. Each year, 25 first-generation college-bound students from northern New Mexico (roughly half from Breakthrough Santa Fe) receive full scholarships to attend one of six partner colleges.

The annual commitment from Andrew Davis is breathtaking: $5 million/year to fund 100 students at any given time who will be first-in-their-families to graduate from college.

Now in my 20th year as Head of School at Prep, I can assure you there is nothing “timid” about our program, our students, or our intentions.

A groundbreaking gift from one family, paired with another major gift, allowed Prep to purchase and install over 440 solar panels. The panels will generate roughly 70% of the electricity we use on campus, which translates to about $35K in savings per year. Our Citizens’ Climate Lobby TAP’s Memorial SM23, which asked for a study on a possible New Mexico Carbon Fee and Dividend, passed on the State Senate floor. Seventh graders raised nearly 50 rainbow trout in a 50-gallon tank, which they later released in the 900-mile-long Pecos River.

Thanks to our parent volunteers, the Parents’ Association’s Rummage Sale raised over $23K, and the Booster Club’s Bombay Night set a new record by raising a whopping $65K. Nearly 2 out of 3 parents volunteered their time and 62% donated to the Annual Fund to help surpass the campaign’s $620K goal. The Parents’ Association hosted 6 dinners (one for each grade) in partnership with Adelante’s “Juntos los Miercoles” for local families experiencing homelessness— over 100 families pitched in and donated money, food, time and energy.

Our new MakerSpace is buzzing! Students are learning the fundamentals of electronics, programming, 3D printing, and laser cutting in our MakeRobots elective course—they’re also learning to solder, read schematics, program an Arduino micro-computer and construct their very own robot out of wood, plastic, flashing lights, and beeping things (and anything else they can dream up).

Our solar panel initiative includes an educational component so that students can be a part of monitoring the changes in campus-wide energy usage.

30 students attended the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) Fine Arts Festival in Dallas, TX. Students participated in scenes and monologues, jazz band, rock tent, coffeehouse, one-act plays, art exhibits, and portfolio reviews. The Upper School’s Fall Play, 12 Angry Jurors, opened to a packed house. Jim Leonard commented, “When Brad Fairbanks found me after the play, I was still wiping away tears and had trouble talking without choking up.”

Over a dozen local experts joined us for our MLK Conference to explore pressing social justice issues from food justice to environmental activism. We hosted a Feast Day in celebration of Native American Heritage Month and our vibrant Native community. Creativity for Peace brought one Palestinian and two Israeli students to campus to discuss the complex Palestinian/Israeli conflict. 20 students attended the 56th Annual New Mexico Model United Nations Session.

Our Middle School students clocked over 700 miles in the 38th Danny Maas Run— and raised over $7K for cancer patients, which will be matched by an anonymous donor. A group of Seniors spearheaded a letter-writing campaign to their elected officials addressing gun violence in America. Now in its 30th year, our Teen Action Program (TAP) contributed over 16,000 hours of community service and engaged with over 40 local agencies, schools and non-profit organizations.

PREP AT A GLANCE We welcomed 330 students to our 33-acre campus in August 2017. Our discussion-based classes remained small with an average class size of 12 and a 1:6 faculty to student ratio. We offered 65 academic courses, 12 of which were honors or AP, and 24 fine art and performing art classes. 31 students took 54 AP exams and 80% of the exams received a 3 or higher.

FROM ADMISSIONS PREP’S PURPOSE CULTIVATING TEAMWORK Our Track and Field teams gave Coach Tove Shere a winning send-off in her final year as head coach with District Titles, three new school records, and 1st and 2nd finishes in the 800 at State. Our Swim and Dive team set five new school records—the boys defended as State Champs and the girls took 2nd place.

The Girls’ Lacrosse team was Conference and State Champs for the 6th year in a row! After a thrilling, undefeated regular season, our Girls’ Soccer Team clinched the District Championship—the first time in over a decade.

At Prep we—students and adults alike—are challenged to discover and to pursue our purpose. What am I passionate about? How can I make a difference? How can I serve others? These are important questions that we wrestle with in our classrooms, when we visit the places we serve through TAP, on our orientation trips, and wherever Griffins gather—it’s our common bond. I believe seeking purpose, serving others, and actively following your passion, are the noblest things we can do while living on this planet.

This is my 15th year at Prep, and much has changed—in 2003, tuition was $12,940 and our tuition assistance budget was $386,000, which 19% of our families received. Over the last six years, Prep has committed to enrolling the best and brightest students who may not otherwise be able to afford an education here. Today, our tuition assistance budget reflects this commitment— nearly 40% of our families receive tuition assistance totaling $1.5 million dollars. All of this money comes from the school’s generous supporters and our endowment—not from tuition dollars.

Prep is and always will be committed to serving our community—it’s our abiding purpose. It is also our greatest challenge. This pursuit of meaningful purpose is the bedrock that defines us. As Griffins, it is what we all have in common.

CULTIVATING CONNECTION A collaborative project among 9th grade Biology, History and English classes expored “who you are, where you came from and where you’re going.”

Seniors attended lectures at the Lannan Foundation—topics ranged from US Policies in El Salvador to American public education. Dozens of alumni were guest lecturers in both Middle and Upper School classes—they shared their expertise in everything from the Crusades to Chaco Canyon to fly fishing.

Our endowment has grown from $5.1 million in 2006-2007 to $18 million in 2017-2018. This reflects gifts across three capital campaigns, market growth, very low expenses, and excellent stewardship. The endowment is critical to our tuition assistance program, and we will continue our work to grow it even more in the coming years.

ENDOWMENTS SECURING THE FUTURE Our endowment funds are a measure of the confidence donors feel about the long term prospects for Santa Fe Prep. When an endowment fund is created, future generations at Prep will forever benefit. The School draws a conservative amount (typically 4%) into the annual operating budget of the average of the trailing 12 quarters of the total endowment value. In 2017-18, that draw—from all endowment funds—amounted to $665,163. The value of Prep’s endowment as of June 30, 2018, was $18,034,000.

HIGHLIGHT: THE ROBERT W. KURTH ENDOWMENT FUND The Robert W. Kurth Endowment Fund was established in 1999 through gifts from alumni. It funds a humanities award given each year to a graduating senior, as well as need-based scholarships for students at Santa Fe Prep.

Mr. Kurth was a key contributor to Prep from 19661996; he played an enduring role in shaping the lives of hundreds of students—many of whom still speak of him and his remarkable influence on their lives. Bob was a beacon of wisdom; he challenged his students to use their minds in deep and intricate ways. Mr. Kurth passed away April 13, 2018.

DAVIS NEW MEXICO SCHOLARSHIP The Davis New Mexico Scholarship is the largest privately funded scholarship in state history designated solely for New Mexican students. Founded in 2012 by philanthropist Andrew Davis as a part of the Breakthrough Santa Fe Program, the scholarship has grown to provide full cost of attendance scholarships for one hundred New Mexican students who will be the first in their families to earn a college degree. To date, the

BREAKTHROUGH SANTA FE Breakthrough Santa Fe is a tuition-free college preparatory program hosted by Santa Fe Prep for under-served, motivated students in 6th through 12th grades.

Breakthrough commits to students for 6 years of intensive summer programming, academic tutoring, advocacy, and help with financial aid, scholarship, and college applications. Almost 95% of our students will be the first generation in their family to attend college, and over 90% of our seniors graduate from high school and go on to attend college after graduation, compared to only 23% statewide. In the past five

EE FORD The EE Ford Summer Teachers’ Colloquium celebrated its sixth summer—attendance jumped 50% from the prior year. Courses are offered by Santa Fe Prep teachers and attended by teachers from across the country. Last year, we fielded courses in mathematics, Spanish, archaeology, writing, mindfulness, and philosophy. To date, the Colloquium has served 269 teachers from 29 states; and each year about two thirds of our attendees come from schools who have sent participants before.

Every senior completed a FOUR-week mentored internship, better known as SIP (Senior Internship Program). The vast majority of internships took place right here in Santa Fe.

THANKS TO YOU EVERY GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE In the classroom, on the field, or on a camping trip, our students offer a constant mix of enthusiasm, intellect, commitment, and kindness. Students savor the blend of a challenging curriculum, dynamic arts programs, spirited athletic teams, and valuable service-learning opportunities. Each Prep experience builds upon the last, guiding students toward growth and development.

Beyond small classes, students enjoy a wealth of activities during any given week. They can choose to serve in student government, edit a school publication, represent a foreign country in Model United Nations, or perform in a play or our jazz band.

Donations to Santa Fe Prep strengthen the value of a Prep education and serve as a vote of confidence in the work we’re doing here. Please do not underestimate the power of your donation. The Society, which is an honorary organization, recognizes those individuals who have made a deferred gift to the School. Besides enabling the School to thank these donors, it encourages them to tell us of their plans and encourages others to make similar gifts to ensure Prep’s future.
