Piedmont Park Community Center Designed for the Portman Prize Studio at Georgia Tech in 2021, this project uses the precedent of the Negro Building at the 1895 Cotton States Exposition in what would become Piedmont Park to create a community and justice center. The program includes plazas for community gathering and use, an art gallery to host local and activist artists, a restaurant/cafe, as well as classrooms and meeting rooms for community organizing. Located at the southern entrance to Piedmont Park, the strong axial alignment draws pedestrians toward and through the Community Center.

Affordable Beltline Housing The Atlanta Beltline is an urban revitalization project conceived of by Georgia Tech graduate student Ryan Gravel to address the lack of transportation alternatives. The project has been a notable success, leading to the area around completed portions of the Beltline becoming heavily developed and gentrified while the city suffers from a shortage of affordable housing. This project aimed to provide affordable, rent-controlled housing alongside the Beltline in conjunction with public spaces for neighborhood gathering. It is a deliberate move to place affordable housing in a desirable area, highlighting the issue to the community and providing opportunities for people from different economic means to interact in order to improve social cohesion and compassion.

GENERATION

Shape Machine Church Developed for the Shape Machine Design and Research Studio, this project is an examination of the applications of the Shape Machine tool for architectural form generation. Beginning with an examination of Jean-Nicholas-Louis Durand’s Précis of the Lectures on Architecture and its commentary on “temples,” that is, religious structures, the project then looked to create a series of programmable rules to generate Christian churches according to these rules.

CLARIFICATION

SHAPE

Advancing the aim of modular design, Shape Machine was then used to create modular alternative uses for church spaces, which in turn were use to propose a proof-of-concept design for adaptive reuse of a church.

Mitsui Fudosan Nihonbashi Tokyo Masterplan In partnership with the University of Tokyo, the city government of Tokyo, Mitsui Fudosan, and others, this masterplanning study sought to take advantage of the removal of the highway covering the Nihonbashi River to revitalize the Nihonbashi area as a center of social activity in the COVID-19 and post-pandemic era. Of particular note were climate resilency, carbon neutrality, and COVID-consciousness. Micromobility served as a vital element in addressing all three areas. Identifying Tokyo street typologies, traffic calming methods, and comprehensive micromobility accessibility through storage, travel, and access were all key to understanding best practices.
