The light fantastic Santa Fe Botanical Garden’s second annual GLOW — A Winter Lights Event kicks off with a preview party on Wed., Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. GLOW, a family event, has a lot more lights this holiday season to dazzle its visitors than it did last winter. Enchanting lighting designs by Joe Dean, of Lumenscapes, transform the garden into a radiant winter wonderland. The evening includes musical performances by Steve Chavez and the New Mexican Marimba Band. There are cookies, hot toddies, and hot cocoa to warm you up, and little ones can meet Santa.

Visitors can also view Morphing Nature, an exhibit of site-specific sculptures by students from the Institute of American Indian Arts and Santa Fe University of Art and Design, made from recovered plant materials and natural and man-made found objects. It is the first in a series of collaborations between the Santa Fe Botanical Garden and local educational institutions. The sculptures, placed along the Garden’s Art Trail, will be illuminated on GLOW evenings.

GLOW opens to the public on Thursday, Dec. 4, and runs through Jan. 3 on selected nights (closed on Thursday, Dec. 25). The hours are 5 to 8 p.m.

(5 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays), with last entry at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Singer, songwriter, and harmonica man John Carey provides live entertainment on Dec. 6; the Buffalo Nickel Duo offers honky-tonk dance music on Dec. 13; the Mary Rose Jazz Duo performs on Dec. 20; and father-son duo Mike and Jake Montiel entertain on Jan. 3. A cash bar is available on Saturday evenings; local businesses Iconik Coffee Roasters and Kelly Liquor Barn sell hot and cold beverages. Santa makes an appearance every Thursday and Friday evening before Christmas.

Tickets for the preview party ($35) must be purchased in advance; Beginning on Dec. 4, tickets are $8 (with group rates available) and can be purchased at www.santafebotanicalgarden.org or at the door. IN OTHER WORDS book reviews That Guy Wolf Dancing by Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Michigan State University Press, 130 pages Throughout her long career, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn has used writing as an acerbic means for critiquing misrepresentations of Native American culture and history. Cook-Lynn was born in 1930 on the Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota. The 2009 recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas, she has held various professorship and writer-in-residence positions in universities across the country.

In her powerful and reflective new novella, That Guy Wolf Dancing, Cook-Lynn creates an effective proxy for her beliefs in protagonist Philip Big Pipe.

Big Pipe is a young man from the author’s reservation who is similarly interested in historical abuses of power against Native Americans. At the beginning of the novel, though, he finds himself living off the reservation in a small, primarily white town — he is therefore a “wolf-dancer,” someone trying to be something he or she is not. “I want to be an Indian living on the homelands of the people. That’s all. Trouble is, I couldn’t get much of an education there except to read the lives of the saints in the assignments they gave you in religion classes, or the white fantasy life called Little House on the Prairie, where there are no Indians in what we all know is Indian Country. But more to the point, I couldn’t find a job there, and so after a while of doing not much of anything, and after my Uncle Tony shot himself, I left. An economic exile, you might say.

And an exile from having to think about the real or the unreal, the foolish Western fantasies about friendly Indians.”

A large part of Big Pipe’s personal wolf dance involves caring for people who are the probable descendants of the early frontier families responsible for decimating his own foreebears. He works as a hospital nurse and spends his nights reading books on historry and politics.

Big Pipe’s attitude toward the evils of the past is both trenchant and resiggned, and he performs his care-taking duties with somewhat mechanical compassion. His care for oves an aged and very wealthy woman who ruined her health with drugs pro pivotal to the young man’s quest to discover himself. She dies and wills him two objects from her collection of Native American artifacts. Upon receiving them, Big Pipe immediately identifies the items as sacred relics stolen off the body of a Santee warrior who was killed in the largest mass execution in American history — the hanging of 38 Dakota men in 1862 that was authorized by President Lincoln. As the woman’s husband ut continually stresses the monetary worth of the items, Big Pipe can’t help bu be feel resentment when wondering how they ended up in their hands: “To b a ‘collector’ of Indian possessions could hardly be considered an honorablle occupation.”

His quest to find his place in life is from then on usurped by his quest to hellp his tribe come to terms with this past atrocity, which ultimately leads to a larrge ceremony of mourning and healing on the reservation. The ceremony is moving, but perhaps not completely transformative for Big Pipe. He reflects that the wearer of the artifacts “died at the hands of war criminals ... seemingly at the whimsy of a mean but relentless history.”

Though some closure is gained by the interment of the sacred objects, Cook-Lynn’s final message in this fluidly written work seems to be that the painful and mercurial history of her people continues unfolding today in much the same way as it has for the last few centuries.

uring a Sunday run-through two weeks before opening night, more than 40 circus performers crowded the Wise Fool New Mexico studio on Agua Fría Street, along with musicians and crew members.

The practice room was warm with sweat, as the performers were in near-constant motion to prevent their muscles from getting cold waiting for their cues. They were also showing off for one another. Two guys spun out some break-dancing moves while another hoisted himself sideways on a pole and executed a series of pull-ups while parallel to the floor.

“I need quiet, please! We’ll get through this faster if everyone stops talking,” director Deirdre Morris called out. Suddenly the only sound was the playing of the five-piece band as two women performed a complicated aerial dance on a metal hoop, known as a tippy lyra, which required using each other’s bodies for balance in midair.

These feats, along with acrobatics, juggling on unicycles, slack-rope walking, and other aerial displays of strength and grace are performed in Circus Luminous, which returns for its 11th season (after a one-year hiatus) on Friday, Nov. 28, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, with additional performances on Saturday, Nov. 29, and Sunday, Nov. 30. Circus Luminous, a production of Wise Fool New Mexico co, features professional Wise Fool circus artists an nd local performing groups, including 3HC Holy Faiith break dancers. This year’s circus also features Féfaféé, a group of acrobats from Guinea, West Africa, that no ow lives in the United States and has been training at the t Wise Fool studio for several months. Other acts weere selected through auditions from around New Mexiico and outside the state.

During the weeks leading up to the performancce, Morris visited the rehearsals of individual acts to giive nce choreography and performance notes, and then on a week everyone got together as a group to unify the different pieces and make what is essentiallyy a cabaret come together as one cohesive show. Morrris, who directs for the first time this year, co-wrote the t 012 script with Sarah-Jane Moody, who directed the 20 nal Circus Luminous. Morris comes from a tradition erdance and gymnastics background and moved into aer ial dance 20 years ago, while Moody’s background is in clowning. The script includes dialogue and choreography for the main parts of the story; other acts were fit in after auditions took place.

Moody sat in on the recent Sunday rehearsal so she could give feedback on certain moments that serve as bridges between acts. “Everyone, look up,” she suggested as they tested the show’s final moments.

“Now look left, then right, now out at the audience.

You need to look disappointed and confused.” All the performers, including a small child standing on a man’s shoulders, did as they were told, and then again several more times as Morris and Moody decided what worked best.

The show’s narrative is about two sisters — the attendant to the sun (played by Amy Bertucci Nieto) and the attendant to the moon (Serena Rascon). They rarely get to see each other because of their conflicting sleep/work schedules. “The sun attendant misses her 24

sister,” Morris said, “and decides to do something radical. And then we spend the rest of the show trying to undo what she’s done.” The sisters live on a boat — a movable metal apparatus manned by a youth ensemble from Moving Arts Española and Peñasco Theater.

A key element of Circus Luminous is the live band, led by Jeremy Bleich, who has composed original music for the show for six years. Morris, inspired by the short story “The Distance to the Moon” by Italo Calvino and the 1902 French silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune, chose an early-20th-century

Art Nouveau aesthetic, so Bleich looked to composers of the era, including Stravinsky, Debussy, and Ravel, and incorporated elements of circus music and Gypsy jazz into his score. Bleich began working on this year’s music in the spring; he then spent the fall working with the performers to tailor his music to the acts. He revised the arrangements throughout the rehearsal process, as Morris cut pieces of some acts and added to others.

The story and the music enhance the magical feeling of the circus, but it’s the seemingly superhuman strength and control required to perform the death-defying acts that make audiences gasp in delight.

What does it take to do a handstand on someone else’s shoulders while you both cling to a long piece of silk that’s hanging from the ceiling, without a net? “You have to follow a physical regimen daily,” Morris said.

“It’s not something you can walk away from and then jump back into. You’ll hurt yourself if you do that, pull a muscle or tear something.” The potential for injury, she said, is the same as in any sport, and possibly less so because people involved in circus arts maintain a detailed awareness of their bodies’ limits and possibilities. She said that as performers get older, more cross-training is needed to keep the body strong enough to avoid repetitive motion injuries.

Yoga, Pilates, and strength and interval training are all popular workouts.

C Circus training also means learning to work with oth her people. You might not know other performers welll enough to trust them completely with you on an apparatus, so you have to trust yourself. “You still havve to go with it and try it, even if you think you migght fall,” said Rascon, who grew up doing ballet and d modern dance. “There’s so much training that goees into what we do, and through that training you find d the trust and confidence in yourself, knowing you kno ow how to handle your body.”

C Cirque du Soleil, founded in 1984, paved the way for the popularity of Circus Luminous, but while Cirrque du Soleil tours internationally with extravagant milllion-dollar productions, Luminous depends on perrformers, musicians, and technical theater artists who live close by. “People are surprised we’re regular peo ople when they run into us at the grocery store,” Mo orris said. “They see us and can’t get over what they saw us do at the circus. And then they wonder if they can do what we do. How do you get people to think outside the little boxes of what they think they’re capable of? Circus does that. Circus pushes you to look outside and decide to try.”

Morris spoke about the enduring sense of community among performers. “Everyone is welcome.

Historically, you had the freaks, and it was considered a weird fringe environment, and it’s still like that. People who don’t always fit into society are comfortable here, where there is no social norm except that you treat everyone well.” ◀

Three for Baroque

This week, aficionados of Baroque music have two opportunities to hear three noted personalities from the early-music world. Violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock is a frequent soloist and concertmaster for American and European period-instrument groups (most enduringly for the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra) and a busy presence in the recording studio, with a discography now numbering 95 releases.

Viola da gamba player Mary Springfels, also much recorded, cofounded and for many years directed Chicago’s Newberry Consort and also appeared with such groups as the New York Pro Musica and Waverly Consort. Harpsichordist Kathleen McIntosh is a mainstay of Santa Fe’s early-music scene, although she also works extensively in contemporary repertoire. The three will perform chamber works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Dieterich Buxtehude, Jean-Marie Leclair, and Marin Marais. Performances take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, at St. Joseph Parish Church (7 First St. in Cerrillos, 505-471-1562), and at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, at San Miguel Chapel, pictured (401 Old Santa Fe Trail). Pottery of the U.S. South: A Living Tradition, Museum of International Folk Art, 706 Camino Lejo, 505-476-1200; through Jan. 3, 2016 Folklorist Karen Duffy, guest curator of the Museum of International Folk Art’s exhibit Pottery of the U.S. South: A Living Tradition, reaches back through generations of ceramists to provide a perspective on enduring traditions in regionally distinct pottery-making. This handsome exhibit is an informative overview of some of the most active and thriving communities of potters in the northern part of Georgia and North Carolina. It’s a broad overview of the families and individuals who, rather than reviving a traditional art form, have kept it vital and alive for more than a century. A large selection of pots and other vessels (some of which are immense in size) by more than 40 artists are shown to great effect at the museum. Members of such noted families as the Owens are represented, along with such individuals as Daniel Johnston, Mark Hewitt, Alexander Matisse, David Stuempfle, Burlon Craig, and Joseph Sand.

The Museum of International Folk Art has always been userfriendly, providing hands-on activities to make its exhibits more engaging. Pottery of the U.S. South offers visitors numerous historical details by way of wall texts, video displays, and touchpads. While an abundance of information can sometimes undermine an art exhibit, distracting from more visceral interactions between viewers and objects, here it works, deepening an appreciation for the pieces on display.

In fact, historical context is vital in this show because the numerous potters it features have maintained a specific tradition, down to the manner in which their stoneware is built and fired.

Extending from its roots in European and Asian pottery forms, 19th-century Southern pottery was of great importance to agrarian life, helping to sustain communities in the region. Potters fashioned functional churns, jugs, pitchers, jars, and crocks, several of which are on exhibit at the show. These were primarily “turned” — a regional term for throwing — on hand-built lathes and then “burned” — a regional term for firing — in wood-burning kilns. Contemporary ceramists from the region still use these techniques, producing useful wares like planters, lidded jars, vases, and umbrella stands. The traditional techniques are passed along to new generations through family teaching, apprenticeships, and garden training — an outgrowth of flower-pot manufacturing.

The exhibit focuses on communities such as Seagrove, North Carolina, where craft shops like the Owens family’s Jugtown Pottery, founded in the 1920s, continue to produce and sell artful utilitarian wares. The clays these ceramists use are regional: They come from the Piedmont plateau area, rolling hills between the Appalachian Mountains and the coastal plain. Several contemporary examples of Southern pottery have runs, or dripped glazes, that are made with wood ash or by placing glass along handles and rims to melt and run during burning. Decoration, usually kept to a minimum, often comes in the form of incised or stamped patterns. A wonderful exception are the painted wares of Winton and Rosa Eugene, which depict regional architecture, landscapes, and narrative scenes inspired by the shared history of black and white Southerners.

In the northern part of Georgia and in North Carolina’s Catawba County, face jugs — typically, grotesquely exaggerated faces of humans and devils — are another artistic expression of traditional lifeways.

Though the face-jug style isn’t considered a major part of the Southern pottery genre, the exhibit represents it well, adding a deliciously creepy (and sometimes humorous) vibe into the assortment of more customary designs and forms. Face jugs, which may have been introduced to the U.S. through slave trade with Africa, have a tradition in the Southern states that can be traced at least as far back as 19th-century slave communities there. Exactly what they were used for remains a matter of speculation, but some possibilities include self-portraiture and warding off evil. Some of the face jugs in the show are by noted artists Jerry Brown, Wayne and Grace Nell Hewell, and Lanier Meaders and include a two-faced politician jug Meaders made in 1975, after Watergate and President Nixon’s resignation.

Pottery of the U.S. South, a bright, well-displayed, informative, and straightforward exploration of distinct regional cultures and their art forms, gives an impressively comprehensive crash course in its subject.

unmask k i n g t h e m y stique of the howling coyote

isitors to the Canyon Road arts district are well acquainted with the ubiquitous image of a howling coyote meant to symbolize not just the Southwest, but Santa Fe and even the street’s famed walk of galleries. But romanticized icons of the American West like the coyote are simply too one-dimensional to properly capture the vibrance of New Mexico’s contemporary art scene.

Considerable numbers of non-Natives may regard the baying coyote as an unofficial mascot of Western art that respectfully embraces the totem animals many Native cultures have long held dear — the coyote, of course, among them. But, thouwgh the coyote can be wise, it also has a dark side in Native lore, in which it is often depicted as a trickster. According to Carol Wheeler, the mother of Navajo Nation Museum director Manuel Wheeler, the coyote (maíí in Diné) is of divine origin but also represents human foibles. In her essay “Coyote ... Maíí,” available at the gallery, she writes, “Coyote made many mistakes or prankster actions that are among us today such as stealing, adultery, self-doubting, and mocking other humans about their negative characteristics.” The coyote is sometimes a hero and sometimes a villain. The ambiguousness of this dual nature makes sense: After all, coyotes in the wild are prolifically predatory. These realities are routinely ignored when non-Natives perpetuate images of the coyote as a tame, whimsically pinkand-turquoise creature with a bandanna for a collar.

In Deconstructing Cooyote, a group exhibit at GF Contemporary curated by Eileen Braziel, Native and non-Native artists question stion the use of the coyote as a romantic representation of the wild West, returning him to his rightful place of ambivalence. Each artist approaches this common theme distinctly, with some taking a more literal approach and others a more conceptual one. “Every artist in the exhibit is inspired by transforming traditional culture,” Braziel told Pasatiempo. “Deconstructing Coyote is more about transforming than transcending,” she said. “Through the creative process, transformation happens. Sometimes the artists aren’t conscious of it.

Hand Me Down, a multimedia installation by Cannupa Hanska Luger, an artist originally from Fort Yates, North Dakota (part of the Standing Rock Reservation), who works primarily in clay and fibers, depicts an elk, its hooves, head, and antlers handbuilt out of clay, and its disemboweled body, ravaged perhaps by a coyote, made from a reclaimed knitted afghan. The guts, spilling out over an old metal table from a Bureau of Indian Affairs office, are fashioned from yarn.

Beth Olsen’s installation is a chandelier created from recycled plastic bottles lit by LEDs that change color. It hangs above a heavy cottonwood table made of charred wood from a recent bosque forest fire and inlaid with aluminum. The table stands partly as a reference to communal gatherings — especially, perhaps, those that center around food, such as Thanksgiving and Pueblo feast days. As such, it can be seen as an exploration into the diverse meanings such holidays hold for Natives and non-Natives alike.

Santa Fe-based F sculptor Chris Collins makes sly reference to the sugarcoating of the coyote-as-icon n in Santa Fe Scene, Scene a piece made from a real coyote coyo ote’ss skull that has been gilded in 23-karat gold leaf. It’s a memento mori that thinly veils its reference to death and decay with a veneer of the precious metal.

Ambient Flower Mobs, a video sculpture by Tony Abeyta, is an animated, single-channel-video projection on an aluminum hemisphere. In the video, a multitude of flowers floats and moves across a backdrop showing images of debris washed up along the Pacific Coast shoreline. The debris (the result of ocean pollution presents a shadow side to the contrasting beauty of the organic blooms that burst across the face of the hemisphere, which is backlit by a color-changing LED display.

Abeyta, who grew up in Gallup and now lives in Berkeley, created a series of related floral watercolors, some of which are also included in the exhibit. Ambient Flower Mobs is a small-scale version of the New Mexico Arts’ “full-immersive” dome project, which will be featured at Concept Fair, a Bayfront Park, Miami, show that runs in December concurrently with Art Basel, in Miami Beach.

Deconstructing Coyote includes several examples of photographer Will Wilson’s Talking Tin Types, an interactive photo series. The images, tintypes made with a wet-plate collodion process, depict women who are active in the arts. AR, a downloadable application designed for mobile devices like smartphones, can scan a photograph’s images, which can then be opened up on the device as video feeds. It’s as if the still images have suddenly become alive. The photographs and videos are portraits of dancer Rulan Tangen, author and activist Demetria Martinez, and musicians Nacha

Mendez and Carla Kounto oupes. Instructions for d downloading the app are avaailable at the gallery. A At the exhibit s closing recepti exhibit’s reception on on Dec Dec. 19 19, visitorss can participate in Wilson’s ongoing Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange, a project originally envisioned as a continuation of Edward S. Curtis’ photographic portraiture of Native Americans in the early 20th century but subsequently reconceived as an experience from the standpoint of a 21st-century indigenous observer. Guests can sign up to have their photos taken by Wilson, who then develops them on-site in his portable darkroom. The gallery encourages those who want to participate in this project to arrive at the reception early, as time is limited.

Like Wilson, Diné artist Bert Benally similarly builds from late-19th- and early-20th-century photo documentation of Native Americans in his Jesus Is NDN single-channel video installation, an animated series of stock photographs of indigenous peoples, their faces superimposed with that of Christ. The piece includes the now-iconic image of Lakota Sioux Chief Spotted Elk lying dead in the snow during the Dec. 29, 1890, massacre near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where Lakota men, women, and children were slaughtered by the United States’ 7th Cavalry Regiment. While some of the still images can at times be humorous, the Spotted Elk photograph features Christ as a witness, in the background, to the horrific event. Pull of the Moon, Benally’s project for TIME (Temporary Installations Made for the Environment), was a land-based collaboration between him and Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei that took place earlier this year in Coyote Canyon. It is the subject

of an interactive 3-D digital land- and d soundscape video, which wass created by xRez Studio o and produced by New Mexic Mexico co Arts Arts. Along with Abey Abeytas yta’s Ambient Flower Mobs, it will be shown in New Mexico Arts’ full dome at Concept Fair in Miami.

Bill Dambrova’s The Body Remembers What We Forget, a large-scale painting composed of three panels, is an abstract work in which amorphous shapes resembling human organs are arranged as totems, which in turn take on the attributes of human faces, animal bodies, and plants. In keeping with the exhibit’s theme, Dambrova’s painting is a deconstruction of sorts — a reduction of the body to its elemental parts and a rearrangement of those into evocative forms.

Marcus Kenney, a Savannah-based artist, works in a number of mediums, including collage, sculpture, paint, photography, and installation art. He created both of his two sculptures in Deconstructing Coyote from recycled materials. Anton Rocamora is a brightly colored deer head, mounted like a hunting trophy, that Kenney created out of plastic beads, darts, plastic clothespins, fishing floats, and numerous other objects. He fitted this outer layer over the type of foam mold that is used in taxidermy and set the assemblage against a painted American flag. With its twisted, hanging threads and multitude of almost-neon materials, the piece recalls the Day-Glo psychedelia of the 1960s. Kenney’s Old Man Coyote, a sculpture that is perhaps the exhibit’s most literal depiction of the icon, is also made of found objects, including a mold made from a human skull that is affixed to the howling animal’s back.

spelling of “moccasins.” Divided into its three syllables, with the last spelling the word “sins,” it can be read as a take on both shop advertisements and the appropriation of Native cultural objects for sale as a commodity. A native of Jemez Pueblo, Fragua is a former graffiti artist who often uses text as an element in his work. A selection of images from Santiago X’s Ghost series obscures well-known 19th- and early-20thcentury portraits by Curtis to challenge non-Natives’ overly simplistic perceptions of Western art. Santiago X uses computer algorithms to create three-dimensional forms over the faces of Curtis’ photographs as an act of re-appropriation. The intent is to remind viewers that their antiquated depictions of Native peoples are no longer viable — or even relatable — from a Native perspective, with more and more non-Native consumers of culture taking on that same mind-set.

Much the same can be said of the coyote. ◀

chapter of Alice in Wonderland was always “A Mad Tea-Party,” whose raucous, wildly ill-behaved cast of characters stood in tantalizing contrast to my quiet and very strait-laced girlhood. Social graces thrown n aside in favor of sloppy, sloshy fun; weird rid-dles with nonsensical answers; and hiccuping,, ridiculous dormice were all placed against a backdrop of spills and fancy cakes and top hats: What’s not to like? Through childhood’s fuzzyy lens, the animals seemed very silly and odd; ass an adult, it now seems obvious to me that thee attendees were very drunk, and probably high.

As we grow up, our innocence, if not entirelyy lost, becomes abstracted and displaced, and d our fervent belief in magic becomes poignantly, impossibly distant.

Artist Julia Buffalohead must be a fan off Alice’s tea-swilling pals. The Minnesota-based d artist, whose affiliation is Ponca Tribe off

Oklahoma, was recently featured in Red, Indianapolis’ Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art’s biennial exhibition of contemporary Native American works. Linguistically related to the Sioux, Ponca peoples originally occupied areas of Nebraska and South Dakota, but were pushed southward after the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie granted Ponca land to Lakota Indians. Buffalohead has said that animals

are revered by the Ponca; her delicate work (acrylic, ink, and pencil on handmade, richly textured paper) includes anthropomorphized dogs, geese, deer, and mischievous coyotes, juxtaposed with girls and women in party dresses. In them, Buffalohead depicts childhood and the animal kingdom with humor and depth.

In Pillow Fight, a wolf and a fox merrily whack each other with white cushions. The two stand upright on their hind legs, their feet leaping i off the ground, their turned-back ears and a wide, canine grins conveying the giddy merriment m of children at play. The work’s babypink p background further enhances this sense of o playfulness. Many of the pieces include human h figures. Typically female and wearing animal-face a masks, they coexist peacefully and a comfortably with their animal counterparts. p Tea Party Day One is dominated by a red-clothed table, and two accompanying cchairs are occupied by a teddy bear and a young b brunette, who wears a wolf mask. lounging in the foreground is a small gray wolf, who sports a Zorro-like black mask over his eyes.

The Great Divide, one of the only works that uses overtly Native American iconography, is also one of Buffalohead’s most visually compelling. A tepee fixed on the right side of the composition is surrounded by a variety of animals, including a crane, a beaver, and a hare. A woman bends toward the animals, offering a tray of sugar cookies. The tomatored background is a strange, nervy addition to this otherwise lighthearted scene. A darker version of this red is used in The Lone Ranger Rides Again, which depicts a group of animals and humans on a velvety couch, situated in a stark white-and-beige forest. A woman in a white rabbit mask sits on the right part of the couch with her legs crossed at the ankles and a large book open on her lap. A crow perches on a stuffed rabbit, arching his neck for a better view of the book’s pages. A large tawny deer, antlers commandingly outspread, sits on the far left portion of the couch, his front and back legs tucked neatly under his body. In addition to his black mask, the deer is strapped with a holster, which contains an ivory-handled gun.

Buffalohead’s charming, quirky compositions remind me of another children’s tale — Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The story’s fantastically ill-advised young protagonist stumbles into a house that’s empty, but clearly inhabited, and eats the food and sleeps in the beds of their absent owners. But she never seems to us a villain; after all, she was innocent, just a child. I imagine Goldilocks would find herself quite at home in Buffalohead’s tableaux, so redolent of childhood and all its strange and hopeful magic. ◀

scene was President Kennedy’s forty-fifth birthday bash at Madison Square Garden, and Life photographer Bill Ray wanted to find a unique angle. He surreptitiously broke away from the policecordoned press pod and climbed up above the stage.

When Marilyn Monroe walked into the spotlight to sing her now-famous rendition of “Happy Birthday,” Ray had a perspective nobody else got, above and behind the sparkly dressed star. It was just one of hundreds of singular images made by the photographer, a sampling of which opens in a newly curated exhibit at Monroe Gallery of Photography on Friday, Nov. 28.

Ray was born in Shelby, Nebraska, in 1936, a few months before the first copy of Life magazine hit the stands. He started as a staff photographer at the Lincoln Journal Star the day after graduating from high school.

At seventeen, he photographed President Dwight Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon, who were visiting Nebraska. During that time, he had the opportunity to meet Gen. Curtis LeMay. It was a foreshadowing of a career full of celebrity encounters.

He went on to work for United Press International in Chicago and for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune.

Then, in 1957, he turned down a job with National Geographic to begin freelancing for Life. He was soon a staffer working out of the magazine’s New York, Beverly Hills, and Paris bureaus. In his 2007 photofilled biography, My Life in Photography, Ray says it could also have been titled “My Life With Marlys,” after the woman he met in 1956 and married in 1958. She has been an invaluable assistant — and his agent, ever since Life folded in 1972.

The many subjects in Ray’s portfolio include a newly enlisted Elvis Presley about to board a troopship bound for Germany; John and Jackie Kennedy in the early 1960s, and Jackie and Aristotle Onassis later that

decade; a stunning close-up of actress Natalie Wood; a fierce Muhammad Ali in the ring; George Harrison and Bob Dylan singing at the Concert for Bangladesh; baseball star Roger Maris at bat; Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate strolling along a London street; a series on Ronald Reagan and his family; and candids of artist Isamu Noguchi and cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. Ray also did two Army tours as a photographer in Vietnam.

After Life ceased publication, he freelanced for Newsweek, Archaeology, Smithsonian, and Fortune, and developed a portrait specialty. “One thing I’m still good at is people,” said Ray, whose recent work includes an

Bill Ray: She did. She was quite a character. Both my parents were just perfect. I had a terrific childhood.

My mom was very busy with her art and loved the idea of my pursuing something like that. We were not by any means wealthy, but she always found money if I needed a camera.

Pasa: Your main role model was Alfred Eisenstaedt.

Why him?

Ray: It was just from reading Life magazine and having a passion about photography. I loved growing up as a kid in a tiny little town, but as I got older it was clear that I wanted to get the hell out of there. My dad would have given me the lumberyard he owned, but I didn’t want to sell two-by-fours. I had a passion about going to New York and Life magazine. Fred Astaire was from Omaha, and when I saw him dance [in a movie] with Cyd Charisse in Central Park, that was it: I’m going.

Pasa: A lot of what you did were sort of Johnny-onthe-spot news assignments covering things like a Muhammad Ali fight or Nikita Khrushchev visiting a farm in Iowa.

Ray: That’s right, but I also originated a few ideas.

For example, in 1959, there was a little story in the paper — every morning when I got up, I’d grab The New York Times,The Wall Street Journal, the Daily News, the [Daily] Mirror, and whatever else I could get my hands on — and there was a little story about a bunch of people in Detroit who were going to Alaska to homestead. I rushed over and showed the picture editor the continued on Page 46

Bill Ray, continued from Page 45 story, and he said, “Go ahead, go.” I was very enthusiastic and worked very hard on every assignment. You have to be intense and keep going. That’s the only way to keep the assignments coming.

Pasa: It was pretty competitive?

Ray: Oh, god, at Life magazine, yeah. Everybody in the world wanted to work there.

Pasa: You used many different kinds of cameras. To shoot Andy Warhol, you had a giant Polaroid camera, and on the other end of the spectrum there’s a picture in the book of you at age eleven, concentrating on the viewfinder of a Speed Graphic.

Ray: That’s when I belonged to the Omaha Camera Club. The tiny village I grew up in was 90 miles away, so we’d go into Omaha once a week. It’s there that I met my mentor, who was a brilliant commercial photographer. He really got me on the right road to how photography technically works. The Speed Graphic was the basic tool at the newspaper I started working at when I turned seventeen in May 1953. I had a Leica and a Rolleiflex and a Linhof, but you really had to use the 4 x 5 [medium-format camera] to make the deadlines.

Pasa: I would think the bigger camera with the film holders was slower than a 35-millimeter camera.

Ray: But for most assignments, you shoot just one or two holders [two shots in each holder], and you come rushing in and soup [develop] that, and you can print a 4 x 5 negative wet.

Pasa: I read that Marlys always traveled with you and loaded the cameras.

Ray: Yeah, and she was the fastest there was at loading a Hasselblad, and she always kept the film straight. You have to know which roll is which, because I would say, “We’re going to push this roll a half [in development time to increase contrast],” or whatever. Under pressure, you have the president or Moshe Dayan and only a limited amount of time, so you really shoot like hell. We traveled a lot. We spent months in Japan, and we traveled for about 10 months with Carl Sagan around the world.

Pasa: Sid Monroe at the gallery told me that Life never ran the photos you took of the Hells Angels.

Ray: The story was killed by the managing editor. I heard that he said, “I don’t want these smelly bastards in my magazine.”

And that was after I worked on it a month. The thing about the Hells Angels is that they are now very popular. Marlys and I found those negatives and got them online, and the emails from all over the world are astounding.

Pasa: Your abilities show up in composition, people’s expressions and body language, and lighting — and most of what you did for Life was shot in ambient light.

Ray: That’s right, although I did almost 50 covers for Newsweek, for example, of Luciano Pavarotti and Itzhak Perlman, and those were all strobe. Another thing about the technique is that in those days — it seems so long ago now — you had to focus and you had to have the right exposure. Even though this digital revolution is truly a revolution — it’s just so huge it’s hard to comprehend — the basics, lighting and composition, are so important.

One of the places I learned composition was going to museums and looking at paintings. You kind of develop an instinct about the composition. But you have to be really fast. That’s the fun part. ◀

War stor story Hiroshima, Mon Amour, drama, in French with subtitles, Jean Cocteau Cinema, 4 chiles When Alain Resnais made Hiroshima, Mon Amour in 1959, the atomic devastation of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was as recent and raw a wound as the World Trade Center attack of Sept. 11, 2001, is to us today.

The American bomb that dropped on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, brought the world face to face with the existential threat of annihilation. By 1959, the hydrogen bomb had supplanted the atomic version, its awesome fusion power as much as 1,000 times more destructive than that of its predecessor, its potential unlimited. In American schools, children were learning to “duck and cover,” taking refuge from the end of the world by hiding under their desks. And in Paris, a documentary filmmaker named Alain Resnais was approached by the producers of Night and Fog, his critically acclaimed 1955 film on Nazi concentration camps, with a commission to make a documentary about Hiroshima.

Resnais turned the project down. How could you make a meaningful documentary about something so incomprehensibly terrible? But a conversation with a friend, the novelist Marguerite Duras, led to an approach he thought would work — a melding of documentary and fiction, overlaid with memory, moving back and forth in time — as a way of getting at the

subject that would suggest the horrors of Hiroshima without trying to define them.

With its innovative, impressionistic structure, Hiroshima, Mon Amour is often cited as one of the most influential films of the 20th century. It was unlike anything that had come before. As Resnais’ contemporary Jean-Luc Godard put it, “The very first thing that strikes you about this film is that it is totally devoid of any cinematic references. You can describe Hiroshima as Faulkner plus Stravinsky, but you can’t identify it as such and such a film-maker plus such and such another.”

Today the narrative and editing techniques Resnais developed have been absorbed into the language of film, and the movie doesn’t seem as radical as it did when it first opened in New York in the spring of 1960,

when it entranced and baffled audiences and critics in equal measure. It has lost some of its strangeness, but it still has the power to mesmerize.

With its screenplay by Duras steeping it in literary idiom, the film opens with a close-up of the naked bodies of two lovers entwined on a bed. We see arms, hands, and legs, but no faces, as the woman talks of what she has seen in Hiroshima — what she has learned from newsreels, photos, hospitals, museums — her account accompanied by documentary film clips of the horrors of the bomb’s aftermath; and the man’s Japanese-accented voice intones, repeatedly, “Tu n’as rien vu á Hiroshima” (You saw nothing in Hiroshima).

When the camera finally pulls back, we are with a beautiful young couple, a French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) who has come to make a film about peace, and a

Japanese architect (Eiji Okada), whom she has met the night before. They are intoxicated with passion, but it is to be an affair that will live mostly in memory; she is to return to Paris after the next day’s shooting. She has a husband and children there. Both she and the man are happily married.

The Duras-Resnais collaboration sets the story against the landscape of memory. The lovers are in the new Hiroshima, the rebuilt Hiroshima. She is staying in the labyrinthine, modern Hotel New Hiroshima, its name set in English characters in block metal letters over a gleaming entrance.

She is trying to understand something of what it must have been like on that terrible day that left about 70,000 dead and roughly 20,000 wounded in a span of nine seconds. He is telling her that it is beyond understanding.

It can’t be experienced from a distance, across time, by proxy. He is a native son, but he was away in the army when the bomb fell, and even he can’t know truly what it was like. And as terrible as it was, memories are fading, even for those who were there — memory is unreliable, life goes on. A new city has grown up above the ashes.

Eventually, as they separate and meet again and sit at a table in a café drinking beer as their time ticks away, she allows her current passion for him to trigger memories of her first great love, during the war, when she was a girl in her hometown of Nevers, in France, and she fell in love with a soldier of the occupying German army and suffered the fate of girls who went with the enemy. Love too has the power to annihilate, and love too fades in memory, no matter how desperately we try to keep it alive.

“Forgetting so much love is terrifying,” she says.

Hiroshima, Mon Amour was Resnais’ first feature, and it marked the film debut of the hauntingly beautiful French actress Emmanuelle Riva, who resurfaced recently at the age of eighty-four as the stroke-ridden wife of Jean-Louis Trintignant in Michael Haneke’s Amour (2012), another heartwrenching film about love and memory and loss.

Resnais died last March at the age of ninety-one. His résumé includes such classics as Last Year at Marienbad (1961), The War Is Over (1966), and My American Uncle (1980), and he was still working up to the end, turning out quality pictures like Wild Grass (2009) and You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet (2012). A few weeks before he died, his last film, Life of Riley, adapted from an Alan Ayckbourn comedy, was a prize-winner at the Berlin Film Festival.

The new print of Hiroshima lovingly restores the elegant black-and-white cinematography by Sacha Vierny and Michio Takahashi. And the movie will answer that nagging question: Is it HiroSHEEma or HirOHshima? The answer? Neither. See it and find out.

Miracle workers Duk County, documentary, not rated, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, only, Jean Cocteau Cinema, 3.5 chiles As a boy, Sudanese native John Dau escaped genocide in 1997 when Sudanese militants slaughtered villagers in his native Duk County. Dau and thousands of young boys made a perilous journey by foot into Ethiopia seeking refuge. Every day, children died of starvation and dehydration. Known as the Lost Boys, their plight attracted international attention. Thousands, including Dau, were relocated to the United States after years of living in refugee camps. Dau returned to South Sudan in 2007 to found the Duk Lost Boys Clinic, a treatment facility managed by the John Dau Foundation, which provides medical services to more than 75,000 villagers in a region where such care is almost nonexistent.

“What we knew about being blind in South Sudan is that, when you are blind, you die” begins Dau’s narration of Duk County, a documentary on the efforts by a team of medical doctors sent to the clinic to combat the region’s rampant blindness. In Duk County, nearly one in 50 people is totally blind.

The region is plagued by famine, disease, and genocide. South Sudan became an independent nation in 2011, when it seceded from Sudan after decades of civil war, but intertribal violence still rages. Ophthalmologist Dr. Geoff Tabin leads a team of doctors, along with journalist (and the film’s director) Jordan Campbell and photographer Ace Kvale, whose haunting still images permeate the film, into the heart of conflict.

South Sudan has one of the world’s largest concentrations of blindness, much of it the result of cataracts. But, according Tabin, 80 percent of blindness in the region is preventable or treatable and about half of all cases are completely curable.

Soon after landing in a dusty airfield, the team members were already operating on patients in rooms swarming with fruit flies and bats while groups of vultures watched like sentinels from the rooftops. They worked feverishly to treat patients as waves of fresh violence erupted in the region.

Eighty-six villagers were killed in Duk Payuel, the location of the clinic, among them a patient who had just regained his eyesight. Despite the violence, nearly 300 individuals were treated at the clinic in five days. Given the odds, it’s an outstanding achievement, and Campbell’s heartbreaking yet hopeful film makes a strong case for the doctors’ continued efforts.

The screening at the Jean Cocteau Cinema is hosted by Outside magazine and includes a short presentation by Campbell before the film. Sam Moulton, Outside’s executive editor, leads an audience Q & A and discussion afterward. Proceeds benefit the John Dau Foundation.

Life in a black hole The Theory of Everything, biopic, rated PG-13, Regal DeVargas, 3 chiles A movie about Stephen Hawking ought to be bursting with ideas, exploding like the big bang, expanding like the universe.

What director James Marsh has come up with is a nicely crafted, watchable, but conventionally structured romantic biopic.

It has, however, one extraordinary feature that lifts it above the level of Lifetime entertainment and gives it wings. Eddie Redmayne is brilliant in his transformation into the gnarled, twisted physical wreck of the Hawking we know, body confined to a wheelchair, voice produced by a machine, mind soaring through time and space.

The Hawking we first meet is a geeky, cheeky doctoral student In sickness and in health: Eddie in cosmology at Cambridge. He Redmayne and Felicity Jones meets a young woman, Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), and despite their differences — he’s an atheistic physicist; she’s a devout Christian studying art and poetry — they fall in love. When Hawking begins to experience clumsiness and suffers a bad fall, he is diagnosed with ALS, a form of motor neuron disease. The prognosis is of rapidly deteriorating muscle control and a life expectancy of two years.

By the end, he is told, only his brain will continue to function normally.

This is the kind of role upon which Oscar ambitions are built, and Redmayne seizes the opportunity by the throat. For a while, as Hawking’s body begins to break down, he continues to get around campus, his legs wobbling, his feet dragging, his mouth contorted, and his speech slurring.

He dazzles his professors with his doctoral thesis on space-time singularity.

He marries Jane. He fathers children. His body continues to deteriorate.

But he continues to live, to lecture, to write. He continues to think, and to theorize. His reputation continues to grow.

What Redmayne captures, as much as the pretzeled limbs and the slurred, later lost, power of speech, is the character of the man. He’s witty, he’s funny, his eyes twinkle, and even when his lips are warped, he still can light up a room with his smile. He may have been hell to live with in many ways — the movie is based on the memoir by Jane, now his former wife, and it’s a kinder, gentler revision of an earlier version that painted a darker picture of their relationship — but, after a brief period of devastation, he never seems to have allowed self-pity to get the upper hand.

The human elements of The Theory of Everything are fine, beautifully played by Redmayne and Jones (whose distinctive mouths look curiously similar). What we miss is the excitement of Hawking’s mind. We want more physics, more of the science that reaches in his consciousness to the deepest expanses of the universe. The film A Beautiful Mind, for example, was able to give us a bit of a glimpse inside that unconquered wilderness of thought. Marsh doesn’t manage to take us there; despite Redmayne’s heroics, The Theory of Everything remains earthbound.

He deceived the art world with his accomplished fakes for decades, until curator Matthew Leininger discovered the ruse. Peering back into the life of the pathological Landis, who was institutionalized as a young man after a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with schizophrenia, Art and Craft takes a nonjudgmental look at a talented, if troubled, person whose con underscores the perverse value placed on works by big-name artists. Hiro (Ryan Potter), a boy who lives in a city that’s a hybrid of Tokyo and San Francisco, adopts an inflatable “health care” robot named Baymax from his big brother.

Tragedy strikes, which pushes boy and Baymax into a mystery so challenging that they enlist five friends to join them. Ingenuity abounds in the movie’s setting,

(Robert Ker) BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) In Alejandro González Iñárritu’s searing, hilarious, sometimes unsettling backstage satire, Michael Keaton tosses his hat into the Oscar ring with his brilliant dissection of a movie star, in artistic eclipse in the years since he sold his soul to play a masked comic-book superhero, looking for redemption on the Broadway stage. Packed with a terrific supporting cast headed by Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, and Emma Stone and shot in a simulated single take by the great Emmanuel Lubezki, Birdman crackles with wit, self-referential allusions, fantasy, and penetrating insights about show business, relevance, and the modern world. Iñárritu, sloughing off the ponderous artiness of his recent movies, makes magic here. Rated R. 119 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Jonathan Richards) THE BOOK OF LIFE The Day of the Dead gets its own mainstream movie with this story about a reluctant bullfighter named Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna), who competes with his friend and rival (Channing Tatum) over the woman they both admire (Zoe Saldana) until Manolo is killed. All is not lost, however: He can travel through fantastical worlds to return to her.

The visuals, inspired by Mexican folk art, are colorful, imaginative, and atypical of current animated films.

That and the swift pacing go a long way, but the corny jokes and lame use of modern pop songs distract from the filmmakers’ good intentions. Rated PG. 95 minutes. (Robert Ker) CITIZENFOUR This you-are-there documentary should be required viewing, whichever side of the Edward Snowden patriot/traitor bias you fall on.

Laura Poitras, the documentary director contacted

by Snowden to break his story, presents only one side here, but it’s a compelling brief that asks what constitutional freedoms we’re willing to surrender for security. Poitras pads her film to nearly two hours with some sleepy footage of Snowden sitting in his Hong Kong hotel room, but there’s plenty of meat, and it’s riveting. Investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald is the film’s other focal point. William Binney, a career-NSA-analyst-turned-critic, observes that the indiscriminate gathering of information on citizenry is what dictatorships have always done.

COPENHAGEN A young American (Gethin Anthony) is researching his family’s lineage in Denmark and going through a personal crisis until a young woman (Frederikke Dahl Hansen) comes along and helps him with both. This indie drama stretches its material a bit further than it can go, but it’s made engaging by the photography of the city, the unusual dynamic between the two leads, and the charm of the central actors. Not rated. 98 minutes. Jean Cocteau Cinema, Santa Fe. (Robert Ker) DUMB AND DUMBER TO Way back in 1994, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels put on silly wigs and joined the proud tradition of the Three Stooges and Steve Martin’s Navin R. Johnson (The Jerk), acting like extreme buffoons in the name of comedy. Not only was Dumb and Dumber a big hit, but it put the Farrelly brothers on the map, too. It’s OK to admit you laughed at that film, and there are moments in this belated sequel that will inspire the same. The story is merely a flimsy excuse for Carrey and Daniels to convince you to have as much fun as they clearly are having, and there is truth in advertising in the film’s title. It’s good — often gross — fun, but a little bit of these actors and these characters goes a long way. One movie every 20 years should do it. Rated PG-13. 109 minutes. (Robert Ker) FORCE MAJEURE A prosperous Swedish businessman, his wife, and his children vacation at a French Alps ski resort. On their second day, a controlled avalanche gone wrong threatens the terrace where they are having lunch.

The man panics and saves himself, leaving his wife and kids to survive on their own. Moments later, the crisis has passed, and everyone is safe. Director Ruben Östlund paints a tense, emotionally fraught observation of the consequences of the man’s instinctive reaction of self-preservation and the shame of his compromised role as male protector. Some scenes don’t hold up, but it’s a provocative, powerful film, and the key event will send you home with something uncomfortable to think and talk about. Rated R. 118 minutes. In Swedish, French, and English with subtitles. The Screen, Santa Fe. (Jonathan Richards) FURY War is hell, and writer-director David Ayer puts us through it in this dense, dark, claustrophobic, sometimes riveting, sometimes trashy adventure. Much of the action takes place in an American tank in the waning months of World War II, as the Allies are pushing toward Berlin.

Brad Pitt is Wardaddy, a sergeant who is tough as nails, except when he’s showing his sensitive side.

The audience surrogate is Norman (Logan Lerman),

a clerk-typist thrust into combat. There’s some fine acting from the core group’s members, who mostly rise above the typical war-movie roles they’re given.

Rated R. 134 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. ( Jonathan Richards) GONE GIRL This twisted noir from David Fincher is based on the bestseller by Gillian Flynn, who penned the screenplay, boiling her own work down to its deep, dark, gripping essentials. Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) mysteriously disappears, leaving her husband, Nick (Ben Affleck), as a possible murder suspect. The story unfolds forward and in flashback and is told from the viewpoint of two unreliable, unlikeable narrators. It’s strategically assembled and briskly paced. Pike brings an icy perfection to Amy, while Affleck makes Nick simultaneously amiable and untrustworthy. Rated R. 149 minutes.

(Laurel Gladden) HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 The other Thanksgivingweekend sequel (besides The Hunger Games) is this follow-up to the 2011 surprise hit about folks who work for jerks and hatch harebrained revenge schemes. The strong cast boasts Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Chris Pine, and Christoph Waltz.

(Not reviewed) THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY — PART 1 Following in the footsteps of Harry Potter and The Hobbit, the studio behind this popular franchise has split the film adaptation of the final Hunger Games book into two parts to keep the money train rolling.

Does anyone mind? Heck no! More Katniss ( Jennifer Lawrence) is always a good thing. This time, she’s talking ’bout a revolution. Rated PG-13. 123 minutes.

(Not reviewed) INTERSTELLAR Christopher Nolan’s space epic is one of the most phenomenally silly movies ever made. But it has an odd majesty. It’s filled with earnest hokum and riddled with theoretical-physics chatter, most of which can’t be understood because Hans Zimmer’s raging score and the thundering sound effects are in a perpetual death struggle with the (mostly mumbled) dialogue. On a theoretical-physics level, it’s all about relativity and the oddity that time proceeds more slowly when you’re hurtling through space than when you’re stuck back on the farm.

On an emotional level, it’s about father-daughter bonds and the power of love. Rated PG-13. continued on Page 60

(Not reviewed) KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON First-time director Alan Hicks’ documentary about Justin Kauflin, an aspiring jazz pianist gradually who lost his vision during childhood, and Terry, Clark the ninety-something trumpet legend who is losing his sight, is a touching, occasionally sentimental film about the way that jazz passes from generation to generation. Arranger Quincy Jones’ relationship with Terry is central to the film’s whatgoes-around-comes-around spin. Only part of the documentary covers Terry’s distinguished history, but it’s a firm reminder of his importance to music.

Kauflin’s piano-competition anxiety and Terry’s health concerns give background to a true musical friendship.

(Bill Kohlhaase) OUIJA A group of teenagers gets together to test out a Ouija board that supposedly had something to do with the death of a young woman. Sure enough, they summon a dark spirit that starts picking them off, particularly when they look in mirrors or through the hole on the board’s planchette. Rated PG-13.

More specifically, she is a young California brown pelican who was discovered in 2008 on the Golden Gate Bridge, dehydrated, disoriented, and closing down a lane of busy bridge traffic with the aplomb of Chris Christie as cops and bystanders tried to remove her.

The documentary would have worked nicely as a onehour special on the Nature Channel, but as a feature film, at a modest 80 minutes, it feels stretched a bit thin, as though its bill is trying to hold more than its belly can. Not rated. 80 minutes. The Screen, Santa Fe. (Jonathan Richards) PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR What’s black and white and green all over? Penguins at the box office!

Whether they’re marching (March of the Penguins) or dancing (Happy Feet), those birds make cash registers ring. The Madagascar animated series is also popular, so this penguin-led spy-movie spinoff will surely attract audiences. The studio woos the art-house crowd by giving Werner Herzog a voice credit. Rated PG. 92 minutes. Screens in 3-D and 2-D at Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe; DreamCatcher, Española.

(Not reviewed) ROSEWATER In 2009, Newsweek journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael García Bernal) returned to his native Iran to cover the presidential election that generated massive street protests over apparent fraud. Shortly after appearing in a mock interview on The Daily Show, Bahari was arrested in Tehran and thrown into solitary confinement as a spy.

He was questioned and tortured for 118 days before finally being released due to international pressure.

Jon Stewart, in a crise de conscience, took leave from his Daily Show duties to shine a cinematic light on the situation. Stewart does a competent job with his debut directing effort but misses too many opportunities, and the film doesn’t soar. Jon, don’t quit your Daily job. Rated R. 103 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Jonathan Richards) ST. VINCENT Bill Murray plays Vincent, a surly alcoholic old-timer who is tasked with taking care of the child (Jaeden Lieberher) of the single mother (Melissa McCarthy) who lives next door, so he teaches the kid how to fight and totes him along to the racetrack. Vincent has to satiate his gambling addiction, but no regular moviegoer would bet against the eventual reveal that this hermit has a heart of gold. The story plays out exactly as you’d expect, and Naomi Watts’ Russian prostitute seems to belong in another story entirely. The film’s saving grace is McCarthy’s affecting performance as a hardworking woman at the end of her rope. Rated PG-13.

102 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Robert Ker) THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA When an old bamboo cutter discovers a miniature girl in a bamboo grove, he raises her as his own daughter.

As Kaguya grows older and the man comes into

unimaginable wealth through supernatural means, he is convinced she is of divine origin. He sets her up in a palatial home, where she spurns numerous suitors, longing only for her lost childhood love. She appeals to the moon for help, setting in motion a series of magical events as she races to free herself from the constraints of courtly life. Director Isao Takahata’s beautifully animated feature is an enchanting, poetic tale for the ages. Rated PG. 137 minutes. Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe. (Michael Abatemarco) THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING A movie about Stephen Hawking ought to be bursting with ideas, exploding like the big bang, expanding like the universe. What director James Marsh has come up with is a nicely crafted, watchable, but conventionally structured romantic biopic. It has, however, one extraordinary feature that lifts it above the level of Lifetime entertainment and gives it wings. Eddie Redmayne is brilliant in his transformation into the gnarled, twisted physical wreck of the Hawking we know, body confined to a wheelchair, voice produced by a machine, mind soaring through time and space. But what we miss is the excitement of Hawking’s mind. We want more physics, more of the science that reaches in his consciousness to the deepest expanses of the universe.

Despite Redmayne’s heroics, Theory remains earthbound. Rated PG-13. 123 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Jonathan Richards) See review, Page 54.

WHIPLASH Miles Teller plays teenage jazz drummer Andrew Neiman, whose dreams of becoming one of the greats hinge on surviving elite music instructor Terence Fletcher (a riveting J.K. Simmons), the sort of teacher who’s more likely to throw a chair at his student’s head than say “please” when requesting a drumroll.

This indie-drama by Damien Chazelle won two major awards at Sundance and compellingly explores the ways in which the power dynamics of a mentoring relationship can turn a teacher’s obsession into a student’s compulsion. Rated R. 107 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Loren Bienvenu)

The Short Order Part of a sort of upscale food court for the Regal Stadium 14 cinema, Pizza Centro Southside serves pie that’s New York-style all the way. The tomato sauce is light, and the crust is soft and usually (though not always) crisp around the edge. The pizzeria has a quick, efficient, order-at-the-counter setup and offer slices, whole pies, salads, sandwiches (pacchetto), and calzones.

Wine and a few draft beers are served.

The location is convenient, the space is modern and perky, the quality of the ingredients is high, and the flavor combinations are creative and robust.

Recommended: Caesar and spinach salad, pizza with pepperoni or green chile and mushrooms, and Little Italy pizza.

Ratings range from 1 to 5 chiles, including half chiles.

“Unless it’s Chicago-style,” my dining companion said, “I’m not generally a fan of pizza that’s so loaded you can’t pick up a slice and eat it.” We were the sole midafternoon customers at Pizza Centro’s Southside location, at least the third pizzeria to occupy this particular corner spot in the San Isidro Plaza, which serves as a kind of upscale food court for the Regal Stadium 14 cinema. My friend is a native Chicagoan, so he maintains fairly strong opinions on the subject of pizza.

But Pizza Centro’s pie is New York-style all the way, with light tomato sauce and a soft crust that is usually crisp around the edge and has a pleasant sweetness and chew. The pizzeria has a quick, efficient, order-at-the-counter setup. The menu is mounted on a wall and includes slices and whole pies, salads, sandwiches (here called “pacchetto,” Italian for packet or package), and calzones. In very-American “go big or go home” style, pizzas are available in three sizes: small, large, and extra-large. Sodas and Pellegrino are offered, as are a number of wines and a few beers on tap — including the hoppy-sweet Lagunitas IPA and Italy’s pleasantly light and mild Peroni. Employees seem friendly, and the kitchen is quick, particularly if you come at an odd hour and have the entire place to yourself.

The dining room has a fun, minimalist, contemporary feel, with a blond-wood banco running along one wall, soft red lumbar pillows, industrial metal-topped tables, and vintagemod metal chairs. On warmer days, a small fenced-in patio beckons with cheerfully communal red picnic benches.

Perhaps with those days in mind, Pizza Centro offers “sidewalk specials,” a daily pizza you can order by the slice until 2 p.m.

Since this is New York-style pizza, Centro’s signature pies are aptly named after various neighborhoods and landmarks in the boroughs of New York City. The un-pickup-able pizza we were critiquing was Little Italy, on which sweet, fresh tomatoes and roasted red peppers meet salty prosciutto under a dusting of basil chiffonade — the pesto and Parmesan getting lost amid it all. Like cream-colored walls for showing art, fresh mozzarella provides a neutral milky background for other ingredients. Instead of the typical paper-thin slices of prosciutto, with edges that might crisp in the oven’s blazing heat, here, you get a version that’s thicker, hammier, and eraser-pink with a soft, almost boiled consistency.

Naturally, you can custom-design your pizza. If you can’t make up your mind about toppings, they’ll happily do a “half and half.” We did that, trying roasted green chile and earthy mushrooms on one half and pepperoni on the other. The quality of the meat was superior, and the kitchen doled it out liberally, but the result was an off-puttingly greasy pool, and the center of the crust was noodly soft.

Centro’s calzones are overwhelming — each is easily big enough for two. Dough is folded over an ocean of mozzarella and ricotta to form a tan half-moon, and when you cut through the crust, cheese practically floods your plate.

Additional ingredients will be stuffed in generously, but even über-savory components like pepperoni and onion were no match for that sea of cheese.

Sizable salads are served in chilled stainless-steel containers resembling bento boxes or Indian handi bowls. The spinach is a hefty heap of greens, slivery ribbons of mild red onion, and sweet roasted red bell pepper. The dressing is partly composed of the fat from a tremendous hill of bacon heaped, still-sizzling, on top. Those crisp crumbles and the soft, sweet peppers created a pleasant textural contrast.

Our Caesar was supercold, and the dressing was light, refreshingly lemony, and (relatively) easy on the garlic. The romaine had been chopped into small pieces, though, which meant we had to stab-stab-stab to get a decent forkful. Sure, you could try shoveling it, but good luck keeping lettuce from fluttering off your fork as it makes the trip up to your mouth.

The pacchetto are crisp, pita-like pockets stuffed with a variety of fillings. The multicolored caprese included mixed greens, roasted red peppers, olives, soft but underripe tomatoes, and baby mozzarella. Despite the fact that these contents bear almost no resemblance to an actual caprese salad, it was an appealingly fresh and nutrient-rich combo. The stunningly cloying dressing killed it, though. I couldn’t help but wonder if the kitchen had mistaken the balsamic glaze (a standard topping choice) for the balsamic vinaigrette.

On more than one visit, Pizza Centro’s dining area was empty. At first this seemed a little sad, because the location is convenient, the space is perky, the quality of the ingredients is high, and the flavor combinations are creative and robust. I eventually realized that most customers were picking up takeout or stopping by for a quick slice before the next screening of Big Hero 6 or Mockingjay. If you don’t have a deadline, though, this is a pleasant, well-lit spot to sit and enjoy a good New York pie and some conversation, maybe with a glass of wine or a pint of beer. Whether you decide to spend that time arguing over pizza styles is up to you. ◀

David Richard Gallery 544 S. Guadalupe St., 505-983-9555 Cracks in the Light is an exhibition of Suzan Woodruff’s paintings created on a“gravity easel”— a device invented by the artist — that allows gravitational force to direct the flow of water and paint. Her atmospheric abstractions take on the appearance of such natural phenomena as storms and crashing ocean waves. The show runs concurrently with Tom Martinelli: Vertical Stripe Paintings at the gallery. Both exhibits are on view beginning Friday, Nov. 28, with a 5 p.m. reception on Dec. 12.

Nakabayashi’s paintings are surreal depictions of city- and seascapes based on the story of the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. Kelliher-Combs incorporates patterns derived from her Inupiaq heritage in the Walrus Family Portrait series. Roberts creates her unnerving mixed-media images from objects she has found or that were given to her, including dead flies, shells, pine cones, and stained tissue paper. The exhibit opens with a 5 p.m. reception on Friday, Nov. 28.

Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art 702½ Canyon Road, 505-992-0711 Chiaroscuro’s annual Holiday Exhibition is an eclectic mix of works by gallery artists such as Renate Aller, Rebecca Bluestone, and Irene Kung.
