How will 2014 graduates look back at the past year in terms of cultural trends? Here’s six reoccurring themes from the past year.

The use of social media The influence of social media and the Internet changes continually. Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show features funny stories about certain subjects written by his fans and hashtagged on Twitter. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel often shows YouTube videos. Pope Francis has been called the “Social Media Pope” for his use of technology to spread information.

Selfies The song “Selfie” by The Chainsmokers came out this year, and though it is a terrible listen, it does address a new cultural phenomenon, the quick self-portrait.

President Barack Obama, Pope Francis and celebrities at the Oscars, among others, have all been seen taking selfies this past year.

Obsession with celebrities Staying updated on the lives of celebrities makes people feel as if they are part of the rich and famous culture.

In a 2009 Psychology Today article, Nathan Heflick explains that we love celebrities because “they are an integral part of our culture. They have made it in the worldview we are so entrenched in. By worshipping them (to an extent) we feel as if we are participating in this hugely important cause/belief system.” The personal relationships of celebrity couples, including Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, continue to be followed under the spotlight. Even now, we are all still caught up in the recent birth of the royal baby, Prince George of Cambridge.

Fairy tales In an interview for Wired magazine, Edward Kitis explains why fairy tales have remained popular: “Fairy tales cast an especially strong spell over the public imagination these days because of one ogre that just won’t go away: the floundering economy.”

Between 2013 and 2014, many classic and contemporary fairy tales have been adapted into film: Beautiful Creatures, Oz the Great and Powerful, The Brass Teapot and Maleficent all offer magic, evil and happy endings.

The end of the world Vampires, zombies and the end of times remain popular. Warm Bodies, Life After Beth and World War Z, as well as the popular TV series The Walking Dead, deal with the threat of flesh- and braineating zombies. In the films RapturePalooza and This is the End, people left behind from the Rapture must deal with humorous and hellish after-effects. Only Lovers Left Alive is about two vampires falling in love as they watch the world collapse. They marvel at the mess humans have made of the Earth. The upswing in the obsession with zombies and vampires may be explained by growing fears of pandemics, but perhaps the terrifying conditions within these stories distract viewers from the banality of their own lives.

Gender bias Who would have thought, in 2013-14, that this problem still exists? In her song and music video “Hard Out Here,” Lily Allen discusses gender double standards, showing the way women are objectified and exploited in the media.

That video also reflects on the cultural phenomenon of twerking, which pop star Miley Cyrus (among others) has brought into public display.

ccording to a 2013 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, about 66 percent of high school graduates go on to college. But what happens to the rest of them?

For many graduates, following an alternative path after high school is a goal based on long-held aspirations of travel or service. Some do not find the idea of college appealing. Regardless of the individual reasons, many students believe that bypassing or putting off college enables them to explore unique opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them.

“I think a lot of people go straight from high school to college not really knowing what they want to do just because that’s what society kind of expects: You graduate high school and you go to college, and after college you get a job and that’s that,” said Naomi Cantor, a recent Desert Academy graduate. She will spend her first year out of high school traveling. She plans to explore Europe next fall, with Amsterdam serving as her home base. During the spring, she wants to backpack in South America and work on an organic farm in Hawaii.

Cantor is a strong supporter of taking a gap year and has been saving for her travels since the eighth grade. For her, the real lessons in life do not come from a textbook.

“There’s a certain kind of learning in school, but then there are also things that you learn about the world that you can’t learn in school. And I hope to go out and learn a little bit about the world and also about who I am and what I want to be,” she said.

New Mexico School for the Arts graduate Brenna O’Brien agrees. She warns, however, that it is important to stay focused and avoid becoming lazy if you take a gap year between high school and college. “Because it is a year off, it’s so easy to just be like, ‘Oh well, I’m just gonna relax and do nothing.’ And I think that it’s really easy to get depressed and feel unfulfilled, so I think the challenge will be to stay active and busy,” she said. Though her plans are still up in the air, O’Brien hopes to pursue a work-exchange situation in Japan followed by visits to Turkey, India and Thailand.

For others, elaborate travel plans are not in the cards.

“I think [I’ll try] to find a job — hopefully at the airport but maybe somewhere else if that doesn’t work out,” said Santa Fe Prep graduate Ian McClaugherty. “I think that would be great, so I can really know what it’s like to have a legitimate job that’s not structured by my parents or my parent’s friends. I’m really excited for that, and I’m definitely scared for that, too. So it’s a whole new realm for

me, whole new world.

And it’s frightening, but I think that’s what makes it exciting.”

Diverging further from the usual collegiate path, St. Michael’s High School graduate Kevin Segura plans to start his own business. He has an ambitious plan to open a center “where artists can have a studio space with all their materials, all the equipment, resources, mentors, teachers and stuff like that that can help them get out whatever they have in their minds and whatever they can imagine.”

Inspired by the artistic community in Santa Fe, Segura said, “I see potential in every person I meet, but there’s always this kind of mindset that, you know, you can’t do anything big in Santa Fe or you can’t make it.” He has received a lot of support for his plan but acknowledges the dangers of his choice. “Not going to college is already a risk,” he said. He’s got a lot of work in front of him, trying to line up a site and funding to make his dream a reality.

Other graduates choose to serve their country. “During high school I was a decent Naomi Cantor student, but I wasn’t Desert Academy graduate motivated to go to college,” reflected Army Pfc. Samuel Lovato, a graduate of La Cueva High School in Albuquerque. “I figured that I would go into the military and get paid to help people and also get paid to go to school in my free time rather than paying out of pocket.”

Currently working as a combat engineer, Lovato sees college in his future, with the goal of attaining a degree in the medical field. But for now he is glad to be serving his country. In looking at the benefits of early enrollment in the military, he said, “I think it’s a good thing for students who are looking for alternatives to college to go into the military directly out of high school. I think it helps the person mature and make timely decisions. When you’re in the military, you get to look at life through a different lens.”

These graduates realize they will face challenges on their alternative paths. Cantor said: “I feel like I’m really ready to go and face those terrifying things. I mean, there’s lots of things that could happen. I could run out of money, I could not get a job, I could get everything stolen from me. There are millions of things that could go wrong. But I think it’s good to be terrified and go and do something even if you’re scared of it.”

Inspired to achieve For many recent graduates, a teacher made the difference

eff Mathis believed in Katie Wheeler when she no longer believed in herself.

Wheeler, a Desert Academy graduate, said she would not have discovered her true passion if it had not been for Mathis, her science teacher. “I had never really been into science before, but in the 10th grade he helped me take on an extra chemistry class, and it really sparked my interest,” she said.

Mathis’ support of her budding enthusiasm gave Wheeler a much-needed boost in confidence, inspiring her to work harder in her junior and senior years and paving the way for her to be accepted into Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. “I attribute a lot of my success in life and academics to Mr. Mathis,” she said. Wheeler is one of many students who say the guidance of a certain teacher changed the course of their lives.

The theme of inspirational instructors has long been part of popular culture, showing up in books and films, including James Clavell’s 1967 movie To Sir With Love, based on E.R. Braithwaite’s book; James Hilton’s Goodbye, Mr. Chips, which was made into a film in 1939; Ramón Menéndez’s film Stand and Deliver; and Helen Keller’s autobiography, The Story of My Life. All of these works have teachers who serve as mentors and leaders, instilling much more than the quadratic formula — as valuable as that may be — into their students’ lives. They remind

up a high quality of work until graduations,” English said. “She did that by never letting me slack, and that’s how I kept going. It will be impossible to forget Ms. Carl.”

Santa Fe High graduate Micalah Boddy points to her theater director and teacher, Reed Meschefske, as the person who fostered her passion for drama. She didn’t realize how inspirational he was until shortly before graduation. “I had been working on a monologue for weeks and it just wasn’t clicking, so I went to rehearsal one afternoon and it still just wasn’t working, and he told me to breathe and feel it,” she said. “And suddenly it clicked. I started to cry, and it all came together.” Meschefske, she said, also cast her in roles that she never thought to tackle. “He’s given me a new way of thinking and has gotten me to places I never thought I would be today,” she said. She is off to study biology at Lipscomb University but said she will always be involved in theater.

Wheeler, the Desert Academy grad, said she can’t imagine how she can ever do justice to Mathis. Her gratitude likely is echoed by many graduates whose goals and accomplishments were achieved with the help of inspirational educators. Be sure to thank your teachers as you go out into the world — especially the ones who changed your life.

After 13 years of school, what does Graduation Day mean to Santa Fe teens?

For Diego Perea of Santa Fe Prep, the step of graduating has particular relevance because he is one of the few in his family to do so. “Knowing that I’m graduating and taking the next step and going to college is huge to me, because there’s a lot of people in my family who never graduated high school,” he said.

Perea spent the last four years of high school playing sports and taking it one year at a time. To get through various challenges, he developed an interest in history, which he plans to study — along with civil rights — in college.

For Perea, college means starting life as his own person.

“College is where you definitely get most of your independence as a person,” he said. “In high school, we depend on our parents for a lot of stuff. [College is] definitely where you learn to take care of yourself a little more.”

As for the actual Graduation Day experience, “It feels amazing … it’s also scary at the same time,” Perea said.

Santa Fe High School graduate Micalah Boddy said experiencing Graduation Day is a “really good feeling.”

Getting through those four years of high school can be a challenge, she said: “You have to work really, really hard and there’s always gonna be really tough times, but as long as you get through those, you will be golden, and you’ll be a lot more prepared for what’s next.”

For those students considering opting out before the big day, she advises staying focused, persevering and having fun. “You’ll always remember it and you’ll always think back on it,” she said.

Graduation Day remains a distinctly sentimental moment for many students. For New Mexico School of the Arts salutatorian Rachel Baltz, it marks “a celebration of starting a new chapter of life.” She sees the work she put in during past four years as playing a role in making her a more independent person. She cites her sister, Keziah Baltz, as being particularly helpful on her road to graduation because “seeing her go through her high school experience and graduate helped me realize that it can be done.” Standardized tests sometimes got in the way of Rachel Baltz’s path. The importance many people applied to those tests angered her, but she said she was careful not to let them deter her from more creative pursuits, including theater and writing.

Others, including Desert Academy graduate Dylan Madri-Renfo, see graduation as a necessary milestone in their journey toward adulthood. Madri-Renfo believes the most important experience he gained from his four years in high school is discovering his passion for art. Forging friendships and sharing in his classmates’ personal growth have been more important to him than academics, he said, though the high school experience allowed him to “get better adapted to the world around me and to become familiar with how academics work.”

Many seniors face graduation with a mix of melancholy for what was and excitement for what lies ahead in college and adulthood, and it remains a highly emotional memory for students as they leave the last four years behind and embark on a new journey.
