LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thank You

Dear Friends of St. Francis High School, When the 2019-2020 school year began, the school leadership chose “Flourish” as the theme for the year. What an unexpected year 2019-2020 turned out to be! And yet, St. Francis High School did indeed Flourish over the course of the year. We began the year with special recognition. Microsoft again identified St. Francis High School as a Microsoft Showcase School—one of only 40 schools across the U.S. that Microsoft considers a best practice school for integration of technology into the learning process. Last fall, Chicago news outlet FOX32 chose to spotlight SFHS on “Pep Rally Friday” where news anchor Brittney Payton spent the morning showcasing the best of St. Francis High School to homes across Chicagoland. The enthusiasm of our students was over the top! Throughout the year, we continued to upgrade the campus facility. In August, we opened a state-of-the-art Fitness Center for our P.E./Health classes, athletic teams, and employees. In March, we installed a new turf athletic field—not just any turf, but one that truly brings a new level of pop and school spirit with its Spartan Blue colors! In mid-March when COVID forced school closures across Illinois, in the span of 48 hours our teachers and staff successfully transitioned to a 100% E-Learning school. Thanks to the incredible support of our loyal St. Francis High School community, we raised more than $69,000 for our Giving Tuesday Now COVID-19 Tuition Assistance Fund and showcased the talents of our faculty and students with the virtual Spartans Unite Benefit Concert. This fund ensured that current SFHS students whose families are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID can complete (or begin) their SFHS education. That support also translates to stable enrollment numbers. Financially, St. Francis High School remains on the right track. Like many, we too felt the impact of the downturn in the economy. Our revenues declined this past year, due to loss of income from cancelled events, concession sales, and a decline in charitable giving. We aggressively managed expenses, particularly in the second half of the year. Together we weathered the storm! On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, I extend our deepest gratitude to each of you for your partnership this past year. We look forward to even brighter days ahead! God bless,

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, CHAIR

Greetings

Greetings Friends of St. Francis High School, We have all experienced the special community of our school — "the St. Francis Way" − that welcomes you, draws you in, builds you up, gives you reason to hope, and sends you out to share your talents and gifts with the world. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank each of you — alumni, parent, grandparent, or friend — who make a St. Francis High School education possible. Your generosity truly enables our school to continue shaping hearts and minds, preparing tomorrow’s servant leaders for a world desperately in need of God’s love. We are particularly proud of our teachers, staff, and school leadership who courageously and selflessly give of themselves to our students during these uncertain times. Despite the significant challenges the pandemic presented, St. Francis High School emerged leading the way to navigate, educate, and graduate talented, resilient, caring students who are ready to take on the next challenge. Their dedication, creativity, and passion serve as a reminder to all of us why we purposefully choose to support this wonderful school. Last spring the Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan that sets forth a 10-year vision and strategic initiatives to further strengthen and solidify our place among the best Catholic college-preparatory high schools in Chicagoland and Illinois. We look forward to sharing with you that vision and our initial progress in the coming months. During this time of heightened uncertainty, may you take both comfort and pride knowing that it is your ongoing support that ensures the operational vitality of our school. With humble hearts, we ask you to consider how you might continue to pay it forward this year through a gift to the annual fund, sponsoring a scholarship, or including St. Francis High School in your estate plan. With deep gratitude for all you do, and in the spirit of Saint Francis our patron, we thank you.

Experience

ONLY AT ST. FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL “The St. Francis Way” develops the whole person, challenging each student to reach their full potential, and guiding them to become good people who share their gifts and talents to lead and serve others. During the 2019-2020 school year, St. Francis High School students continued on the St. Francis path and participated in a myriad of opportunities to broaden their horizons, explore their passions, and discover their best selves.

FOX 32 Chicago Visits St. Francis High School In October, FOX 32 Chicago and reporter Brittney Payton, filmed "Pep Rally Friday" live at St. Francis High School. The broadcast covered the comprehensive excellence of SFHS, celebrating our articulate students, academic opportunities, and spirited culture. The day was a perfect picture of St. Francis High School—academically impressive as well as animated, pulsing with creativity, joy, and goodness – a clear depiction of the way St. Francis develops the whole person.

Walt Disney World, Orlando When Walt Disney World invited St. Francis High School Performing and Visual Arts students to Orlando, students were off with A Smile and a Song. Students received once-in-alifetime experiences as they marched, sang, created, and learned in Disney-led workshops and public performances. Students had fun, felt energized, and learned valuable life lessons that will guide them in their professional careers.

Microsoft Top Community Influencer Award In June, St. Francis High School received the Microsoft Showcase School Top Community Influencer Award for the 2019-2020 school year. This award recognizes schools that exemplify leadership in their local community by sharing their usage of Microsoft Education and its impact on student learning.

Teacher Perspective "As a teacher, I think it is imperative, especially considering the current circumstances, that we keep up with the technological and pedagogical advancements of the 21st century. This, for me, has taken the form of the Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator certification. For English class, this means more collaborative efforts via Microsoft Teams and OneNote, particularly for the sake of discussion and essay peer revisions and finding creative ways to demonstrate knowledge through projects and presentations. I am excited for the opportunities that this certification affords me but also, more importantly, what it affords students and the future of their learning." -Mr. Matthew A. Ernst English Teacher, American and British Literature "My experience as a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE) has provided me with many new opportunities that I would not have had without choosing to expand my knowledge (and comfort zone) in teaching with technology. Being a MIEE has given me a membership in the US and global MIEE communities. It is so empowering to be in contact with other Educator Experts striving to provide a strong, solid curriculum and sharing their ideas with each other, especially during remote learning." -Mrs. Mary McCarthy Mathematics Department Chair

2019-2020 FUNDRAISING

Highlights

THE ST. FRANCIS ANNUAL FUND Each year, annual gifts from alumni, parents, and friends enable students to reap the benefits of the unique educational experience only found at St. Francis High School. St. Francis Annual Fund donors provide critical, unrestricted support, for capital and programmatic enhancements, technology upgrades, tuition assistance and more. Unlike endowment funds, annual giving dollars are flexible and accessible. These funds can be directed to a specific area or used right away where and when they are needed most. Annual gifts to the St. Francis Fund make a profound difference in the lives of St. Francis High School students every day, enabling them to develop spiritually, academically, physically and socially in the daily presence of Jesus Christ.

SPARTAN CLASSIC | 9.27.2019 The 30th Annual Alumni Golf Outing, the Spartan Classic, was held at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton. Through the efforts of alumni and volunteers, every dollar raised provided tuition assistance for alumni children and grandchildren. This is the Alumni Association’s largest fundraiser of the year. Although the golf portion was cancelled due to rain, we celebrated our most successful outing to date. With the support of 192 golfers, the event netted $51,610 for tuition assistance. The 2020 Spartan Classic was held on Friday, September 25, 2020.

FESTIVAL OF FASHION | 11.24.2019 The St. Francis High School Mothers’ Club hosts an annual day of fellowship, shopping, and fashion featuring SFHS student, faculty, staff, and coach models. The Festival of Fashion, which enabled 450 guests to enjoy a pleasurable afternoon with new and longtime friends, gathered to support the school’s mission and netted $10,282.

#GIVINGTUESDAY | 12.3.2019 Through generous gifts from 164 donors, the 2019 #GivingTuesday campaign raised $27,630, with a 36% increase in the number of donors from last year. To our surprise, seven of these donors were current students! Because of our amazing community who donated, liked, and shared our social media posts, voted for our faculty, challenged us to earn more, and offered kind words and encouragement, the amount raised is a little more than the cost of two tuitions. These gifts allow us to continue providing possibilities for students and families to experience a St. Francis High School education.

ENSURING OUR FUTURE AUCTION | 3.7.2020 The annual auction is St. Francis High School’s signature fundraising event. This year, the Spyglass Athletic Center was transformed into GLIMMERS OF GREEN for an evening to celebrate and support SFHS. Guests and remote bidders participated in a silent auction and raffles throughout the night. Event attendees bid on the LIVE auction, which included exclusive sports packages, concert tickets, trips, unique SFHS experiences, and our Fund-a-Cause: Healthy & Fresh – a paddle raise to fund new kitchen equipment for improved quality and variety of meal options in the Student Union. In total, the Ensuring Our Future auction netted $286,499. Funds raised on this evening helped ensure all programs for academics, pastoral ministry, athletics, fine arts, and tuition assistance were funded and viable. Through donations, attendance, and involvement, the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends help make our auction successful each year! Stay tuned for information about the 2021 Ensuring Our Future auction scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2021.

#GIVINGTUESDAYNOW | 5.5.2020 St. Francis High School established a COVID-19 Tuition Assistance Fund to assist Spartan families who had been negatively affected by the financial challenges of COVID-19. On May 5, 2020, SFHS participated in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity and giving, and asked those who were fortunate enough to remain financially secure to make a gift on this day. Spartans united and raised $69,470 for the COVID-19 Tuition Assistance Fund ensuring that current students would complete their SFHS education and allow the incoming class of 2024 to continue on the St. Francis path. All were invited to tune in that evening for the Spartans Unite Benefit Concert to see the amazing showcase of talent peformed by the SFHS students, faculty and staff.

VOLUNTEERS More than 400 volunteers worked thousands of hours on numerous projects and events during the 2019-2020 fiscal school year. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 we were unable to host the annual Mass of Volunteer Appreciation to express our gratitude for our volunteers' time and talent. We sincerely thank each one of our volunteers for their tireless effort and meaningful support. We couldn’t do it without you! Alumni, parents, and friends of St. Francis High School are encouraged to share their gifts of time and talent. The Alumni Association, Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs, and the Auction committees are just a few of the ways that you can volunteer. Please contact Becky Feltes ’97 Fischesser at bfischesser@sfhscollegeprep.org or Debbie Quirk at dquirk@sfhscollegeprep.org for more information.

Empower Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program In 2017, bipartisan lawmakers passed the Invest in Kids Act. This historic law provides up to $100 million in scholarships for children from low-income and working-class families in Illinois. Scholarships are funded through private donations to scholarship granting organizations, like Empower Illinois, who then administer the application and scholarship process. Donations to the scholarship program are eligible for a 75% State Tax Credit. Empower Illinois’ Tax Credit Scholarship Program provides educational options for students limited by household income, neighborhood, or learning style. Empower Illinois partners with approximately 91% of Illinois’ recognized private schools to ensure families have options to find their child’s best fit school. Designate a gift for scholarships at St. Francis High School through Empower Illinois. For information, contact Steve Nache, Vice President for Advancement at snache@sfhscollegeprep.org or visit empowerillinois.org.

August 2019 - Newly Renovated and State-of-the-Art Fitness Center On Monday, August 12, 2019 the St. Francis High School community celebrated the Ribbon Cutting and Blessing of their newly renovated Spartan Fitness Center. Through the generosity and desire of 14 individuals/families, more than $76,000 was donated toward this project. Spearheaded by parent, Dr. Pat Calcagno, along with the input from SFHS Administration, Dave Haberman, Physical Education Department Chair, and Bob McMillen, Facility Manager and Varsity Football Coach, the goal was to recreate and maximize the fitness space to benefit all students and athletes, while maintaining the safety of all users.

“The fitness center has never been in greater demand! A special 'thank you' to the school leaders, parents, and alumni whose work and contributions made the renovation possible.” - Dave Haberman, Physical Education Department Chair The updates to the fitness center have profoundly impacted the students of St. Francis High School. All students utilize the space in PE and/or athletics, and therefore have benefited from major improvements in safety, quality and capacity. The updated lighting, mirrors, and layout promote easier monitoring which gives teachers and coaches the ability to safely accommodate larger classes and athletic programs. The addition of new Hammer Strength HD Athletic Training Racks and PLAE flooring facilitates instruction of functional training which better prepares student athletes for the demands of daily life and their sports. The newly renovated fitness center equips our teachers and coaches with the best resources to pursue their vision and creates an environment that students are drawn to and excited to use.

March 2020 - Kuhn Memorial Stadium Field Updates Kuhn Memorial Stadium serves as the “front porch” of St. Francis High School welcoming thousands of visitors and fans each year. It is the place where we enjoy “Friday Night Lights,” cheer on the Spartans as they compete in soccer, lacrosse, and football, and watch the marching band, cheer, and dance teams perform. It also is home to the Scott Nelson Track where we watch our track and field team run the race and compete in the full range of track and field events. And, the Stadium enables all our students to hone their athletic skills in P.E. class. Nothing brings the entire St. Francis High School community together in quite the same way.

“Our beautiful, new, blue, athletic field brought many smiles this summer during summer camps. There are even more excited students, coaches, teachers, and spectators looking forward to using the field this school year!” - Dan Hardwick, Athletic Director The new field design also takes things up a notch showcasing our true colors—Spartan Blue—and represents just what it means to Preserve our Legacy and Build for the Future! 24
