President’s Message -Mariana Velazquez, D.M.D., PA

“A wise man adapts himself to circumstances, as water shapes itself to the vessel that contains it.” - Chinese proverb

The South Florida District Dental Association is no stranger to this phenomenon. We have now adapted to “the new normal” and have managed to stay in touch with our members.

And what better way to do so nowadays than through social media? We have exponentially boosted our Facebook and Instagram presence. If you have not done so yet, make sure you follow us on both virtual platforms. A lot of information is being posted on a regular basis, from advocacy, to COVID-related updates, to upcoming events and member benefits reminders, just to name a few.

I encourage you all to “like,” comment, and share our posts, so we can all spread the word and increase our outreach to as many dentists in our area as possible.

Another way we want to help members succeed is through providing new and potentially-retiring dentists a link through our newsletter and social media platforms to start transitions or associate positions. Be on the look out if you are interested!

I now appreciate, more than ever, the importance of being a tripartite member. The American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association and South Florida District Dental Association have all done an amazing job at helping all members navigate through these difficult and ever-changing times. The role of these organizations in advocating for dentists has been unparalleled, mainly by keeping us all informed about pertinent news and updates related to our profession. Just a few examples include: (1) dentists being now

considered essential workers during this pandemic, (2) giving priority to dentists to access and purchase PPE, and (3) dentists being included in the HHS fund.

We are constantly seeking members who want to become more involved in leadership positions. There are so many advantages to being a part of our team. Having a voice, discussing different points of view, taking a front-row seat in the decision-making process that affects us on a daily basis as professionals, getting to know your colleagues and increasing your network, and the camaraderie that comes with it – makes it all worth you becoming more involved. To all young dentists out there: Don’t be shy. Reach out. We are thrilled to welcome you!

Our three joint affiliate webinars were a complete success! Dr. Randold Binns, Dr. Nuria Otero and Dr. Mark Limosani provided us with fantastic presentations on implant esthetics, biologic and esthetic ceramic restorations, and technological advancements in endodontics respectively. They were very well received by members from both in and out of state. Please do not hesitate to register for any of our future webinars. Our goal is to resume in-person affiliate meetings in 2021, if circumstances allow.

And what better way to close my remarks than to celebrate the victory of our very own Dr. Cesar Sabates for being elected the 2020 ADA President-Elect! Cesar’s dedication and hard work for organized dentistry throughout the years are well known to all of us, and are now paying off in the best possible way. He has been a positive force within our district and our state, and will now continue to do so nationwide. Please join me in congratulating Cesar and wishing him nothing but the best in this new and exciting journey!

Message From the Editor - Richard A. Mufson, DDS

I wish to offer personal heartfelt congratulations to my long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Cesar Sabates, for having run such an amazing and admirable campaign, and having recently been elected President-Elect of the American Dental Association.

I have known Cesar for my entire career in dentistry, spanning over thirty years – but yet have known so few in my life with Cesar’s level of integrity, devotion to family, friends and colleagues, his unending willingness to give back to his profession and community, and his significant experience and accomplishments within all three levels or organized dentistry. It is also extra special to know that Cesar will also serve as the first ADA President from our great state of Florida, and the first Cuban American to serve in that position.

A good number of others throughout our local district have collectively stepped up to the plate for Cesar whether in the form of financial support, personal time, hard work, and/or creative talent devoted - toward making this happen, and whose efforts also deserve so much in the way of sincere appreciation and thanks. Congratulations, Cesar!

The Making of a President – How We Ran the ADA President-Elect Campaign During the Covid Pandemic On October 19, 2020, the American Dental Association, at their annual House of Delegates, voted to elect Dr. Cesar R. Sabates as ADA President-Elect. It was an exhilarating moment that we, the campaign staff, missed. Before I get into that, let me tell you how we got to that day.

When Dr. Sabates decided to make a run to become the ADA President-Elect, we were not dealing with a pandemic or a national presidential election. We were still meeting at various restaurants, and enjoying our continuing education dinners with our friends and colleagues. The campaign started, as all campaigns do - with personal appearances at these events, questions and answers, collecting donations and preparing to travel around the country to do the same. Mind you, actual campaigning started in November, 2019. The holidays would come, during which we would not be holding any meetings, including dinner meetings, which would not resume until January. We only had four months left before the summer hiatus. However, things were about to change drastically and quickly.

We held the last of our affiliate meetings within three months, with the last one in March at Tropical Acres in Davie. We touted Dr. Sabates’s campaign at every moment and had built significant momentum in our district. Then, just a week after that last meeting, everything shut down.

Because of a pandemic, being in an office, or out and about, became a problem. In keeping with mandates designed to keep ourselves and our fellow citizens safe, our homes became our workspaces, and virtual meetings became the norm. And with that, being able to promote Dr. Sabates’s campaign became a challenge.

Huge virtual events replaced national and state dental conventions. Any in-person meetings fell victim to travel issues because no one wanted to sit in an incubus of plague.

Needless to say, Dr. Sabates’s plans to campaign outside of Florida became impossible. So, he turned to the next best thing – TELEVISION! No, he did not buy airtime on national networks to spread his message to the various state delegations. But, as the next best thing, he would turn to his campaign manager, Dr. Michael Eggnatz, who would assemble the team to bring Dr. Sabates to life in everyone’s living room, kitchens, and even bedrooms through “ZOOM.”

Dr. Eggnatz called upon Dr. Mark Limosani for his social media savvy, and Victoria Marrero, graphic artist, to help modernize the media messages. Yolanda Marrero became the campaign headquarters logistics person, Valentina Izarra would bring her talents as a voice coach, and Jhornadys (Jhorna) Castañez would be the lighting tech and sound engineer. The team would work together

4

to sharpen the skills that Dr. Sabates already possessed.

Within a few days, the SFDDA office had been turned into an audio-visual studio, staged perfectly for Dr. Sabates to hold his “Zoom” caucuses and meetings with other state delegations throughout the country. The accounting office was a “dressing room,” and the conference room served as the “war room” for over three months.

One of Dr. Sabates’s strengths has long been addressing crowds in person, but to have the same effect through the virtual media was quite different. That is where voice coach, Valentina Izarra, came into play. She helped Cesar appear natural on camera, something he took to very quickly. She even made sure that his attire would look good on screen. The SFDDA office is not a studio, and overhead fluorescent lighting is far from ideal for video production. Still, Jhorna lit the stage, eliminating shadows and balancing the color, making the scene sharp and neat. She also ensured a clear and clean sound which is so important when giving speeches or answering questions. Dr. Mark Limosani and Victoria Marrero worked with Dr. Sabates’s messaging on his private campaign Facebook group, and Victoria ran practice “Zoom” sessions with the help of Valentina and Jhorna to perfect the technical quality of his presentations.

Dr. Eggnatz, along with Yolanda Marrero, kept the schedule of state caucuses and presentations. This was not as simple as one might think, as they were dealing with various time zones and overlapping meetings. Yolanda also acted as a “whip,” ensuring that the crew stayed on time, session after session.

And between sessions, during the little available downtime, you could hear Frank Sinatra in the background while the crew got a bite to eat. There was time for prayer and time for laughter. There were even some tears.

We came to realize that even a pandemic has a silver lining. For Dr. Sabates, it was the ability to run a successful campaign from his home base, the SFDDA office. It was a wonderful experience that few get to experience. The can-do spirit and encouragement we had with each other were insurmountable. On the final day of caucus zoom meetings, we all went home, excited that the next day would be Election Day and that, for better or worse, we had done everything we could do as a team for Dr. Sabates.

On the day of the election, we gathered in the “war room,” which had transformed into a campaign party room with balloons and garlands in the campaign colors of navy blue and orange. There were platters of rugelach, pastelitos, and cookies on tables, handmade for the occasion by Dr. Eggnatz’s brother in law, Joel Tepperberg. Sparkling wine chilled in a bucket – waiting for the moment.

We were projecting the ADA House of Delegates meeting on the big screen, and our local delegates were on their iPads in attendance of the event. For some reason, the sound in the war room was not very good, and so when Dr. Sabates was named ADA President-Elect, we thought we heard it, but were not sure. Then our cell phones began to light up with messages. We looked at each other, and a resounding cheer went up in the air, confirming Cesar had won!

The champagne cork flew, and we toasted to Cesar’s well -deserved moment. It was a day of many firsts. It was the first time a candidate had won from Florida. It was the first time a Cuban American would become an ADA President, and would also be a first ever for the South Florida District Dental Association.

The final task for Dr. Sabates and the team was to get some rest. We had spent over three months of nights, weekends, at odd hours of the day and night running a winning campaign. It was now time to take it all in, while knowing our work had paid off.

We thank all who donated to the campaign, all who made calls and spread the message, and finally, the spouses of the team members who understood we were on a mission.

Congratulations, Dr. Sabates. We are so very proud of you! Pictured top right to bottom: Dr. Cesar Sabates speaking at a caucus via Zoom; Drs. Eggnatz and Limosani checking notes and campaign schedules; Valentina reviews practice footage with Dr. Sabates; Team in action during a caucus presentation; Johrna sound checks Dr. Sabates before his presentation.

Dentist Day on the Hill is going Virtual! A Message from Dr. Andy Brown, FDA President I want to thank everyone who registered for the Florida Dental Association’s (FDA) 2021 Dentists’ Day on the Hill (DDOH), which was scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, in Tallahassee to celebrate 25 years of advocacy and beyond. Since we are still in the midst of a national pandemic, there are many restrictions on in-person meetings, including the number of people that will be allowed to gather in large numbers at the Capitol. Based on this information and the potential for limitations, the FDA has decided to make DDOH virtual!

The virtual DDOH will take place remotely on Tuesday, March 16. We are continuing to host DDOH on Tuesday (instead of a Monday or Friday), since this was the original date set and could most likely garner active participation from legislators. We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity and register to be a part of this virtual advocacy day. For those who have never participated in DDOH, this is your chance to hear directly from legislative leaders on their support for the FDA’s legislative agenda. You’ll get to see your FDA leaders in action as we move forward with our one-on-one meetings with key legislators prior to the start of the 2021 Legislative Session. Please check your emails for additional information on the specific schedule for the virtual DDOH that will be sent at a later date.

And what is a legislative day without member engagement! We need you to be a part of this virtual day on the Hill! You’ll get to pose questions to legislators and gain insight on what is happening on specific issues related to dentistry. We’re also giving away prizes to the members who really get into the spirit of advocacy and go above and beyond to participate in the virtual DDOH — more information will be sent at a later date on how you can get points to be eligible for a prize.

Advocacy is one of the most important things we do. Renew Your Membership Today. The numbers count!

So, register today for 2021 DDOH at floridadental.org/virtualddoh. Once you’re registered, you’ll receive information directly from an FDA team member on what you need to know and how you’ll be able to join the virtual DDOH. If you already registered for DDOH, you’ll receive an email reconfirming your registration for the virtual day instead of in person. You’ll also be directed to immediately cancel your hotel reservation.

I look forward to seeing you at our virtual DDOH and hope that you can still support our legislative efforts, even if we must do it remotely. For more information, please contact the FDA’s Governmental Affairs Office at gao@floridadental.org or 850.224.1089. Don’t forget: DENTAL CARE IS ESSENTIAL CARE! Sincerely,

Dr. Andy Brown FDA President

exÅxÅuxÜ|Çz eÉá|x The year was 1999. It was same year I was installed as a new line officer in SFDDA - then known as the “East Coast District Dental Society (ECDDS).” Only two weeks before our installation at the June 1999 meeting of the FDA in Orlando, we also had hired a new Executive Director – Ms. Rosalie Small. Although she had experience running other organizations, dentistry was new to her. In her first ECDDS newsletter column, she wrote about her excitement, and how eye opening it was, to have attended the FDA meeting only two weeks after joining us, and to learn of the many issues facing our profession, including most specifically – “the proliferation of non-licensed dentists” in South Florida.

Upon meeting her at that same FDA meeting, I knew she was a gem of a selection to head up our dental organization. She was personable, open and accessible to ideas and conversation about events affecting not only dentistry, but also many other aspects of our lives. Within a short time, I would also come to appreciate that we shared a lot in common. We were both very much from the same demographic: Jewish, Democrat, liberal arts-educated, and we shared many similar views on life, politics and on the world around us. She served our organization well for seven years, and then moved on to another position as Executive Director of Florida Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD).

On Sunday, September 20, we received the unexpected and sad news that Rosie had passed. This seemed so unanticipated, given that her treatment for cancer several years earlier had seemingly gone so well, and was thankfully in remission.

Having retired from her stint with AGD, she enjoyed life to its fullest – much of which I would learn though her posts on Facebook. She traveled the world, visiting places so many of only dream of. She also spent a lot of time with her family in the DC and Virginal area.

Other Memories of Rosie

During my time working up the ladder of leadership within ECDDS, and finally as president in 2003-2004, I would lean

-Richard A. Mufson, DDS, Editor

on Rosie quite a bit for advice on many issues taking place within our organization. Based on her experience and expertise, she was, to me, the wiser “grown up” in the room. Although not old enough to have been my mother, at times it would sure feel like it – for she would have no hesitation in telling me the right way to handle a given situation or issue, or certainly letting me know in no uncertain terms, when I had done something wrong.

Among my favorite memories were the several summer continuing education meetings for required courses she worked very hard to arrange - at legendary resorts in the Florida Keys such as Cheeca Lodge and Hawks Cay. The connections made between the CE, the families that attended, and having so much fun at the resorts were amazing.

She also was of great help in fulfilling an idea that I had at one point – a name change for our dental society. I had long thought that “East Coast District” did not easily nor accurately describe who we were to the average layperson, and felt that “Southeast Florida” (later becoming “South Florida”) would be more understandable to John and Jane Q. Public. When nervously couching such a radical idea to Rosie – she was both excited and supportive. After my raising the issue at an Executive Council meeting, a motion passed for the change – but not without some future significant push back from the FDA House of Delegates. However, our entire delegation and Rosie helped lead the way to help get it done.

I will never forget a specific quote Rosie came up with upon hearing that several other FDA component organizations were not happy with the choice of our new name – such as Atlantic Coast, and others from the Naples/Fort Myers area, who said it was “not fair,” and bemoaned the fact that they too were also located within “South Florida,” and therefore questioning why we should assume such a name. And Rosie’s response: “Sorry, we thought of it first.”

And then there were a couple of surprise birthday parties we continued on next page

threw for Rosie – one at a Hawk’s Cay summer meeting, and another at my house. There was also the time I invited Rosie and Anita Pandey (she had also been very close to Rosie over the years) on my boat for a deep-sea fishing excursion. We had a blast. My memories of Rosie will be cherished and not soon forgotten. I feel fortunate to have known her.

I also feel somewhat deficient in writing this – given that there are so many of you out there who knew Rosie, or spent more quality time with her, and could share so many more detailed and more meaningful memories than I have shared. And I’m sure you will, at some appropriate time of your choice. And I look forward to that. Rosie is and will be sorely missed. May our collective fond memories of her be a blessing.

Rosie enjoyed cruising among her many travel adventures

AAAÅÉÜx ÉÇ eÉá|x

I was very saddened by the loss of Rosie Small, our previous Executive Director.

I was the first person in South Florida to meet Rosie, as I was the chair of the search committee for a new executive director.

I will never forget picking her up at MIA for the first time. She had never seen me and I had never seen her. Within only a few minutes after meeting each other, I said to her, “Rosie, I had not imagined you so small.” Without skipping a beat she replied, “Dr. Sabates, I did not imagine you being so fat.”

That was the beginning of a good friendship. I had spoken to Rosie recently to thank her for contributing to my ADA President-Elect campaign. She was happy, upbeat and full of life, and it was nice to share some time with her, even if it was only over the phone.

Dr. Cesar Sabtes with Rosie Small at the 2015 FDC in Orlando

Rosie and I had our ups and downs over the years, but we shared mutual respect and admiration for each other.

I will miss my friend Rosie. May she rest in eternal peace. Thank you Rosie… -Cesar Sabates, DDS
