SOUTH FLORIDA DISTRICT DENTAL ASSOCIATION MOUTH-BODY-MIND EVENT IS Dr. Oscar Peguero FOR EVERYONE! SFDDA President April 17, 2020 We want to invite everyone to attend the SFDDA’s one-day wellness event at the Hollywood Beach Marriott, located at 2501 North Ocean Drive in Hollywood, Florida.

The program will feature renowned health and fitness expert, Dr. Uche Odiatu. Dr. Odiatu has lectured at many state and national dental meetings, including the Chicago Midwinter Meeting, the Hinman in Atlanta, and the American Dental Association. His knowledge of the Mouth-Body connection is fascinating and his unique presentation style will make for a very informative and enjoyable day.

Please bring your staff and your significant other. We have purposely chosen this program to provide an overall learning experience for everyone - from office to home life. There are pearls for all.

To make this even more enticing, we will be holding the 2020 Annual Business Meeting DinnerDance at the same location the night before. Are you Renewal Ready? FYI... All Florida-licensed dentists must renew their license for the 2018-2020 biennium by Feb. 28, 2020. Click here to renew your license. You must have 30 hours of continuing education (CE) by the biennium deadline to renew your license. Click here to view the list of courses that must be taken to renew. Opioid Prescribing All dentists, regardless of DEA licensing, must take a two-hour CE course on the safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances during licensure renewal by Feb. 28, 2020. This two-hour course will count toward the 30 hours of CE you need to renew your license. You do not need to take another CE course on the prescribing of controlled substances for this licensure cycle if you already did so this biennium.

EPA Amalgam Recycling Rule NO SEPARATOR OR NEW OFFICE? MUST INSTALL

All non-exempt practitioners must install a compliant separator by July 14, 2020. Newly opened offices that begin operating on or after July 14, 2017 must be in compliance immediately.

Must file a One-Time Compliance Report within 90 days of installation.

SEPARATOR ALREADY INSTALLED?

Good until June 14, 2027 or unit needs to be replaced, whichever comes first.

Must file a One-Time Compliance Report by October 12, 2020 or 90 days after transfer of ownership.

EXEMPT FROM INSTALLING

1) Dentists exclusively practicing in one of these specialties: oral pathology; oral + maxillofacial radiology; oral + maxillofacial surgery; orthodontics; periodontics; prosthodontics.

No further action required.

2) Wastewater discharges from a mobile dental unit or into a private septic system. Installed amalgam separators must comply with the following best management practices: 1. File a One-Time Compliance Report. Keep on record for lifetime of ownership.

No further action required.

2. Monitor according to manufacturer’s recommendation. 3. Replace/Repair if malfunctioning according to manufacturer’s instructions within 10 business days of discovering defect. 4. Maintain by replacing amalgam retaining cartridge, separator canister or units as directed by manufacturer or when the collection unit reaches capacity, whichever comes first. 5. No use of oxidizing, acidic cleaners when flushing dental unit water lines, chair-side traps and vacuum lines. Therefore no bleach, chlorine, iodine and peroxide cleaning agents that have a pH of lower than 6 or greater than 8.

3) Dentists who do not place amalgam and do not remove amalgam except in limited emergency or unplanned, unanticipated circumstances, and who certify as such (estimated less than 5%).

Must maintain records on site for 3 years of: 1. Any reports filed 2. A visual inspection log 3. Documentation of any repair or replacement
