President’s Message Enrique Muller, DMD, MSC As I sit in front of my computer writing this message, I cannot stop myself from thinking about the multitude of billing statements which arrive around this time each year, and of course always in very close succession. They range across the multiple levels of organized dentistry from the tripartite to the American Academy of Periodontology and American Board of Periodontology, and together total a small fortune that would be enough to join the most prestigious study club, or even put a down payment on that new cone beam computed tomography unit I’ve been eyeing. Then I remember the importance of membership and what organized dentistry means to me, and has done for all of us, and gladly proceed to pay all the invoices.

One of the most difficult tasks I have encountered, when trying to recruit new members into our association is explaining the value of membership - beyond the discounts on insurance, or services and supplies that you get when you join especially when even I myself have reasons to pause when faced with the ever increasing dues.

I try to convey the importance of our various political action committees, and our very organized, efficient and effective lobbying teams at the local, state and national levels. The sheer number of those who attend Dentists’ Day on the Hill in Tallahassee each year, for example, and the number of those whom they represent, is impressive, and becomes all the more possible and powerful if you are part of it – organized dentistry.

We also enjoy a great amount of continuing education, which includes five meetings at the affiliate of your choosing at no additional charge, as well as the state-mandated courses at discounted rates. This includes the very controversial course dealing with the prescribing of opioid and controlled substances, which has been made possible due to

the arduous effort of our leadership and staff, especially on such short notice before the rapidly approaching January deadline.

Let us not forget all the programs offered to the public in the form of education, as well as volunteering to provide free care to those that truly need it. Membership also affords you the opportunity of having a peer review option in order to resolve a patient dispute before it escalates to either a civil lawsuit or a Board of Dentistry proceeding.

One of the most important benefits of belonging to organized dentistry is the shared camaraderie among us, as well as the multitude of networking and social interaction opportunities that are available to our members.

As I have often said, I also believe we need to focus on recruiting new young members, as they truly represent the future of our organization and profession, as well as maintaining our existing long-time members. The only way we will be able to do that is by all of us helping others understand the value and benefits of membership and being a meaningful part of organized dentistry.

I would like to thank our SFDDA executive board and affiliate boards for all the hard work this year as well as our incredible staff for keeping this association functioning properly.

Please be on the lookout for our electronic communications, and also do not forget to “like” us on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/south.dentalassociation/

I look forward to seeing you all at the remainder of our affiliate meetings and SFDDA events.

Enrique Muller, DMD, MSC, President

Continuing to Live Under the Effect of the “South Florida Weirdness Magnet”

- Richard A. Mufson, DDS, Editor

Why was I not surprised in the least to learn that serial mailbomb suspect, Cesar Sayoc, accused of sending explosive devices to a former president, a former presidential nominee, and over a dozen other high-profile Democratic critics of President Trump – has a South Florida (and much less an Aventura!) connection? Why were very few others I know also not surprised?

So how in the world can anyone explain the fact that O.J., as well as numerous incompetent voters, and so many other wacked-out people and insane stories have inexplicably ended up in South Florida? Simple. They were all “DRAWN” here by the powerful Weirdness Magnet.

I also could not help be reminded of one of my favorite pieces written in 2007 by Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist, Dave Barry, in which he cited the explanation for this phenomenon as being related to the fact that, whether we like it or not, we are all living under the powerful influence of the “South Florida Giant Underground Weirdness Magnet.” 1

Well, in the years since Dave wrote this very insightful column, the weirdness has continued, and the magnet apparently remains a threat to our very existence.

The answer is simple. It is because everyone on the planet knows that when crazy or freaky things happen, chances are really high that they either happen, or end up, in South Florida.

Dave Barry also came up with a scientific theory and method for locating the mysterious magnet. He took a map of South Florida, looked at the location of each occurrence, also assigned each a weighted “Weirdness Quotient,” and based on which, deduced the magnet had to be buried somewhere beneath the Golden Glades Interchange.

Among many examples – why not begin with the ironically appropriate (at least for this column) only-in-Florida repeat

A couple of other stories not only have a South Florida connection, but even a “dental” connection…

He also proclaimed that, “We need to find it, dig it up, and get rid of it.” He also suggested that, if and when we find it, we need to “send it some place that could use more weirdness, such as, Cincinnati.”

Dave also cited quite a number of examples of wacky South Florida occurrences over the years justifying his theory – such as O. J. Simpson deciding to take his golf clubs, his one glove, and his knives, and move here. But why? Or, how about the “hanging chad” voting debacle in the 2000 election? He also cited the “Miracle Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich” (which the owner sold on eBay to a casino for $28,000), the Versace slaying, the Elian Gonzalez fiasco, the Anna Nicole Smith Corpse Battle, also featuring the sobbing, mentally unstable theatrics of the judge in that case, Larry Seidlin, and still other crazy newsworthy and head-scratching moments in our local history. 4

of the 2000 voting debacle? Only now, it’s the 2018 mid-term election voting debacle! And the apparent epicenter of which? You guessed it – Broward County in South Florida.

Among other examples, far too numerous to list them all here - consider the sex, jealousy, and money-motivated murder of Ben Novack, Jr. (father, Ben, Sr., was the original owner of the Fontainebleau) and his mother, Bernice, in 2009. How about Edward Archbold, who died in 2012 after eating dozens of giant cockroaches as part of an insect-eating contest?

A couple of other stories not only have a South Florida connection, but even a “dental” connection – such as the Tallahassee murder of FSU professor, Dan Markel (look it up) and the Tamarac dentist arrested for allegedly trafficking synthetic cannabinoids and possession of significant amounts of paraphernalia (look that one up too).

Pictured first row: Miracle Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwhich; Judge Larry Seidlin, Anna Nicole Smith

Second Row: Ben Novack, Jr., and wife, Narcy; Cockroach-eating contest winner, Edward Archbold

Third Row: Keith R. Griffin, “cat downloaded”porn images; Man buying beer armed with pet alligator

Looking for other zany South Florida news items? How about 48 year-old Keith R. Griffin, who claimed his cat, and not him, was responsible for walking across his laptop computer when he was not home and downloading numerous child pornographic images? And what about the poor homeless man on McArthur Causeway, whose face was eaten in a cannibalistic attack by a deranged and presumably drug-intoxicated assailant?

How does one explain the recent incident of all-star Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Antonio Brown, in a fit of rage over the theft of $80,000 cash and a 9 mm automatic gun from his haute Sunny Isles Beach “Mansions at Acqualina” rented condo, throwing a large vase, a mirror, a table and several other items of furniture off the 14th floor balcony,

nearly hitting and emotionally traumatizing a 22 month-old child and his father at the pool area?

What’s up with the man who was arrested for walking into a 7-Eleven with an alligator tucked beneath his arm during a beer run? Wait…OK… that was actually in Jacksonville and not South Florida, suggesting the Weirdness Magnet may have limits to its power, and apparently able to draw many, but not all, weird people and their antics to our specific area of the US. (As an aside, I also believe this guy has taken the concept of “therapy animals” just a little too far.) I think you get the picture. And the list of wacky and zany stories goes on and on. I have since performed a similar scientific study to the one cont. on page 6

“Weirdness Magnet,” cont. from page 5

Dave Barry came up with, again using a map of South Florida, and combining both his data leading up to 2007 with my own data from the numerous wacky and crazy incidents occurring since then. However, perhaps owing to ever-shifting people, places, and degrees of relative weirdness, I have somehow come up with a new and different suspected location of the Weirdness Magnet. My jaw dropped upon realizing the place to which my calculations pointed.

I am somewhat distressed to report that it is apparently buried somewhere deep beneath the Aventura Mall.

And this is not good by any means, because unlike the Golden Glades Interchange - which many would not mind in the least if the place was destroyed to locate the magnet (and certainly no love loss even if it was not successfully found to be located there) - Aventura Mall, I don’t have to tell you, is quite a different story.

Considering the wealth and sheer numbers of local and international revelers and travelers who flock into and through that place on a daily basis, rivaling only the size of crowds seen in movies like Ben-Hur or The Ten Commandments – digging up Aventura Mall would be one “hard sell” to say the least.

And what that means is that, as South Floridians, we will have little choice other than to continue living under the spell,

Are you sitting at home in front of your laptop, tablet or other device, while going through several continuing education offerings? That’s wonderful. You don’t even have to get dressed up AND you can be with the family.

But with great technology comes great loneliness. Sure you’re getting your CE requirements met, but there you are, neglecting a very important aspect of doing business. You are missing out on meeting up with other dental professionals and joining in on conversations about challenges others face, or discussion of legislative issues that might impact your profession, or even catching up with friends and acquaintances about recent vacations and the kids. You are missing out on possible referrers and referrals.

Through our affiliate societies, the South Florida District Dental Association offers over 15 continuing education dinners at various locations and they are included as a benefit of your ADA membership.

8

The South Broward affiliate meets in Davie at Tropical Acres Restaurant, the North Dade-Miami Beach affiliate meets at Novecento in Aventura, and the Miami Dade affiliate meets at Casa Juancho in Miami.

The interesting topics and nice dinners provide a perfect opportunity to not only socialize, but to get first hand information on what is going on at the local, state and national levels when it comes to the dental profession. These gatherings are also great places to meet your association leadership and provide your thoughts, ideas and opinions on matters that are most important to you. And most important, you get to spend time with old friends, while also making new ones!

We hope you make it a point to attend one or more of our next affiliate dinner meetings. We are your community and we want to get to know you. Have you Renewed Your ADA Membership? Renew Now to keep attending affiliate meetings!

FDA Prepares for 2019 Legislative Session By Joe Anne Hart, FDA Chief Legislative Officer

Now that the 2018 elections are over (sorta), the Florida Dental Association (FDA) is preparing its legislative agenda for the 2019 Legislative Session. The FDA will take a comprehensive approach during session to address access to dental care. Florida’s Action for Dental Health provides several initiatives that focus on increasing access to dental care for all Floridians. Once the FDA’s legislative agenda is finalized, a detailed legislative issues sheet will be posted on the FDA’s website.

Educating newly elected legislators on the priorities of organized dentistry will be paramount for the upcoming session. Grassroots member involvement will be beneficial to moving forward proposed legislation supported by the FDA. Legislative contact dentists (LCD) serve as organized dentistry’s first line of defense at the local level and are instrumental in developing relationships with legislators, as well as educating them on the importance of the FDA’s priorities. To volunteer to serve as an LCD, please contact Legislative Assistant Courtney Thomas at 850.224.1089 or cthomas@floridadental.org.

Another way to become involved in advocating for the FDA’s legislative priorities is to attend the 2019 Dentists’ Day on the Hill (DDOH), scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, in Tallahassee, with a legislative briefing on Monday, March 11, at 6 p.m. To register, please click here. All registration will be processed online; no paper registration is available.

The FDA has a room block at the Doubletree by Hilton Tallahassee for the rate of $219 with a $15 self-parking fee or $18 valet fee. To book your room, please call 850.224.5000 and reference group code “AFD” or click here to book your reservation. Rooms for this event fill up quickly – so reserve your room today!

Additional information on specific legislative issues to be discussed during the legislative briefing on Monday, March 11, will be provided at a later date. Individuals who register for DDOH will receive email communication on information to help prepare you for your visit to Tallahassee. If you have any questions, please contact Governmental Affairs Liaison Alexandra Abboud at 850.224.1089 or aabboud@floridadental.org.
