School Life LIVING THE MISSION

INTRODUCTION

A Letter from the Head of School San Francisco Day School is so many things: a place to be challenged, inspired, cared for, heard, and understood. It’s a place for fun, laughter, and friendship; a place for serious conversations and intellectual discovery; a place for sharing your story and embracing the stories of others. For over 40 years, this school has led the way in K-8, co-educational student-centered education, based on a curriculum that draws from the three pillars established by our visionary founders — our commitment to teaching and learning, to social-emotional wellness and growth, and to a culture of inclusion and community engagement. We know that our students, each of them talented, passionate, and curious individuals, are enriched and stretched by the complexity and nuance these pillars bring to our programs. In this School Life handbook, you’ll find insights into how we bring our mission to life every day on our campus, where students are inspired by dedicated teachers who work productively with parents and guardians. You’ll learn how you can participate in the life of the school, and about the programs and initiatives that set SF Day apart. I love to think about SF Day as a village, where humans, young and not-so-young, come together to be part of the work of growing, stretching, and learning — and through the trust and joy of being a part of the village, feel brave enough to share their stories, advocate for difference, and teach by example. There is so much to learn — and so much to share. So let’s get started! With gratitude,

Dr. Racheal Adriko Head of School

OUR

Mission Mission Statement At SF Day, we ignite curiosity. We cultivate a diverse, nurturing community that encourages learners to expand their perspectives and become their true selves. Students develop as compassionate, creative problem-solvers, prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world. Every school has a mission, but how does it come to life? SF Day’s mission is grounded in three pillars, which are always interconnected: our enduring commitment to intellectual excellence; the importance of social and emotional wellness and growth in and out of the classroom; and the bedrock belief in building a culture of inclusion and community engagement. Every aspect of school life connects to all three of these central ideas, and each is strengthened by the others.

OUR

Values

The Phin Foundation is a shared set of values that unites our community. CURIOSITY: Children are inherently curious about the world around them, how it works, and the people in and beyond their communities. We honor their curiosity by providing them with the space and grace to explore, centering their lived experiences as children and students. COMPASSION: Children are inherently kind. We build on their natural love for community and teach them how to care for, and learn with, others. CHARACTER: Children build character through guidance, positive examples, and personal experience. SF Day leads children through the process of selfreflection to promote growth for continuous selfimprovement and to develop a strong moral compass. COURAGE: It takes courage to take positive risks and to make choices that align with their values, particularly in difficult situations. SF Day honors our children’s courage by providing an environment in which they feel secure enough to take risks in the spirit of being their true selves and acknowledging the efforts in doing so.

TEACHERS MAKE LASTING

Connections

Our faculty knows that children who trust their teacher feel free to take intellectual risks, try something new, share an opinion, or find new passions. Relationships with the children in their classrooms are their first priority. This is the guiding principle behind SF Day’s approach, where teachers continually reflect on and deepen their practice to best meet the evolving needs of all of our students. They are innovative and creative in how they implement SF Day’s curriculum, responding to the needs of their classroom. As educators, their own backgrounds and interests are celebrated through expansive professional development opportunities provided by the school. They are true collaborators, working together to appreciate all facets of a child’s experience so that every teacher who interacts with a child is fully informed and engaged with where that child is on the arc of development. Through our teaching practices, our Nest & Stretch approach, and our commitment to student wellness, our faculty bring joyful learning to each classroom.

THE WORLD IS

Co-ed We think childhood should be, too. Coeducation is one of SF Day’s founding commitments; we were the first K-8 coeducational independent school in San Francisco. More than four decades later, we still believe there is tremendous value in children growing up and learning together. School is, after all, where children begin to practice being in the world. At SF Day, students learn alongside one another, solving problems, exchanging ideas, creating, playing, and leading together. They learn from classmates who think differently. They form friendships they might not expect. They learn to listen to a variety of perspectives. And they see every day that curiosity, creativity, leadership, kindness, and courage belong to everyone.

Community, Culture & Engagement For 45 years, SF Day has helped students connect learning with meaningful participation in the world around them. Our Community, Culture & Engagement program encourages students to contribute to their school, San Francisco, and the wider world. Throughout the year, students build relationships, practice leadership, serve others, and take responsibility for their communities. Dedicated CCE experiences extend classroom learning into San Francisco, and a variety of on-campus events such as San Fran Jam, Fall Fest, Concert for Community, and all-school assemblies offer opportunities for parents/guardians to engage with and contribute to our community.

WHAT IS ABOUT THE K-8 EXPERIENCE? A K-8 school is a place where children grow into responsible and insightful young adults on their own terms and at their own pace. The natural peaks and valleys of child development provide opportunities for real-life learning and growth. A K-8 education is also scaled to offer connections between younger and older students, and give children chances to lead early and often. Our approach allows us to meet children where they are and preserve a sense of curiosity and wonder, while also building towards the hallmark of an SF Day graduate: a life-long learner and grounded, caring citizen, confident in their talents, and aware of the world around them.

Signature Programs &Experiences SF Day’s signature programs, which are featured both inside and outside of the classroom, are designed to spark excitement and curiosity, encourage intellectual risk-taking and innovative perspectives, and celebrate students’ confidence to embrace developmentally appropriate challenge at all grade levels.

Buddy Program Every SF Day student has older or younger buddies, creating relationships that stretch across grade levels and help make our K–8 community feel connected. Kindergarten partners with 8th grade, 2nd with 6th, and 3rd with 7th, while 1st, 4th, and 5th grades come together as a buddy group. Throughout the year, buddies read, create, play games, work on service projects, and take part in school traditions together. The activities are fun, but the relationships are what matter most. Younger students get to know older children they can look up to, while older students practice leadership, responsibility, and care. Over time, students build relationships well beyond their own classrooms and grades along with a deeper sense that they are part of one SF Day community.

Dolphin Tank What would you change if you could? Open to students across K–8, Dolphin Tank challenges young innovators to identify a real problem, imagine a solution, and pitch their idea to a panel of judges. Students work on their ideas in their Innovation & Technology classes. Finalists earn funding and mentorship from real-world entrepreneurs and innovators to test, refine, and build their solutions.

Math Stretch & Math Competitions At SF Day, there is always room to go further in math. Students revisit and expand key concepts, develop flexible strategies, and stretch their thinking with increasingly complex problems. For students ready for more, math extensions provide additional depth and challenge. Beyond the classroom, Mathletes gives students who love problem-solving another way to stretch themselves through local and state competitions, including the AMC 8 and MathCounts.

Athletics & Teamwork Athletics at SF Day begin with the joy of moving, playing, and being part of a team. Through our afterschool Athletics Program, K–5 students can play soccer, basketball, and baseball on SF Day teams in citywide youth leagues, building skills, confidence, sportsmanship, and an understanding of what it means to be a teammate. In Middle School, students build on that foundation, competing as SF Day teams against other independent schools. Across the program, students learn to work toward shared goals, persevere through setbacks, and experience the camaraderie and joy of playing together.

Performing Arts & Music Every SF Day student learns to play an instrument and has many opportunities to perform as a musician, singer, and actor. Music fills the school throughout the year, from classroom performances to schoolwide concerts like San Fran Jam and Concert for Community. Students in 5th and 8th grade also take the stage in full theatrical productions. For students eager to go further, advanced ensembles, including competitive jazz band and symphonic band, offer additional challenge and performance opportunities. By graduation, every student knows the joy — and the work — of creating, rehearsing, and performing with others.

Signature Programs & Experiences (CONTINUED)

Outdoor Education Outdoor Education has been part of the SF Day experience since 1985, giving students opportunities to learn, grow, and challenge themselves beyond the classroom. Beginning with their first overnight trip in 3rd grade, students spend time together outdoors, building independence, strengthening relationships, and discovering new capabilities. The program grows with students through 8th grade, when two trips connect directly to their Social Studies curriculum. Along the way, students deepen their understanding of the natural world and consider their responsibility to care for the places and resources we share.

Speech & Debate and Model UN Speech & Debate helps students find their voice, think on their feet, and communicate with confidence. Beginning with Mini-Speechies in Lower School and continuing through afterschool enrichment and the Middle School Speech & Debate elective, students learn to build an argument, reason clearly, speak persuasively, and respond in the moment. As their skills grow, students put them to the test in competition, facing peers from around the country and earning top placements at national tournaments.

Nest & Stretch Children don’t need the same kind of challenge or support at every moment. A student may need more time or scaffolding in one area while being ready to go further in another. Nest & Stretch is SF Day’s flexible approach to responding to each child as a learner. Through Nest, learning specialists provide additional support and practice when students need it. Through Stretch, coaches in math and humanities provide greater depth and challenge when students are ready for more. There are no fixed tracks or labels. Teachers and specialists work together, continually looking at what each child needs to grow. The goal is simple: children should be known deeply, challenged meaningfully, and supported intentionally throughout their K–8 years.

Signature Programs & Experiences (CONTINUED)

Play & Values Some of the most important lessons of childhood happen through play. SF Day’s Play & Values coaches help students make the most of recess by leading games, encouraging active play, and giving children opportunities to practice being teammates, solving problems, and navigating the everyday challenges that come with playing together. It’s also a place where our Phin Foundational Values — Curiosity, Compassion, Character, and Courage — come to life. With coaches there to guide and support them, students practice including others, working through disagreements, making good choices, and trying again when things don’t go as planned. The skills children build on the play yard carry with them throughout the school day.

Innovation, Technology & Robotics Every SF Day student takes Innovation & Technology from kindergarten through 8th grade, beginning with hands-on, screen-free experiences and progressing into coding, robotics, design, and emerging technologies. Students eager to go further can join Digital Dolphins, our competitive robotics program for grades 5–8. Competing in the FIRST LEGO League, teams design, build, and program robots to tackle complex challenges, then test, troubleshoot, and improve their designs. Students put technical skills into action while learning to collaborate, solve problems within real-world constraints, and persist when the first solution doesn’t work.

Visual Arts Visual arts are part of every student’s K–8 experience at SF Day, giving children opportunities to experiment, develop skills, and discover new ways to express their ideas. Through our signature Artist of the Month program, students across grade levels study the work of an artist, explore their techniques and creative choices, and use what they learn to inspire work of their own. Art also connects students across the school. Each year culminates in our Imagination Celebration, when artwork from every grade transforms the campus into an all-school exhibition — a joyful celebration of what students have imagined, learned, and created.

The Portrait of a Graduate SF Day graduates leave us with strong academic foundations and the confidence to think for themselves. They read deeply, communicate clearly, reason through complex problems, ask meaningful questions, and apply what they know in new ways. They know themselves as learners—where they thrive, when they need help, and how to advocate for what they need. They listen to others, contribute their ideas, collaborate well, and take responsibility for themselves and their communities. By 8th grade, they are ready for greater independence: curious, capable young people who know how to learn, work with others, and meet challenges with confidence and purpose.

High School Counseling Process Our personalized high school counseling process begins in 6th grade and guides students and families through every step of finding the right next school. In 7th and 8th grades, individual counseling and a dedicated high school class help students identify schools where they will thrive and prepare for visits, applications, interviews, and testing. Along the way, students take increasing ownership of the process and learn to present themselves with confidence. Over the past five years, SF Day graduates have gone on to more than 30 independent, public, parochial, and boarding schools in San Francisco and beyond.

SAN FRANCISCO DAY SCHOOL

Beyond THE SCHOOL DAY Afterschool Enrichment Program (AEP) The SF Day experience continues after the school day ends. Our Afterschool Enrichment Program gives students time to play, connect with friends, and choose how they spend their afternoon in our daily afterschool program. Families can also sign up for enrichment classes that let children discover new interests or go deeper into something they already love. Offerings range from ceramics, cooking, chess, dance, and theater to Speech & Debate and our Digital Dolphins robotics team. Students can also take one-on-one music lessons and participate in K–5 athletics. Together, afterschool play and enrichment give children both freedom to unwind and opportunities to explore and families the flexibility of high-quality care right on campus.

K-5 AEP Athletics Students don’t have to wait until Middle School to play on an SF Day team. Through AEP Athletics, K–5 students can play soccer, basketball, and baseball with their classmates in citywide youth leagues. The emphasis in these early years is on learning the game, developing skills, and discovering what it means to be a teammate. Students build confidence, practice sportsmanship, and experience the fun of working toward a shared goal. As they grow, that foundation prepares them for Middle School Athletics, where opportunities for skill development and competition expand.

Family&Faculty Partnership OUR PHILOSOPHY Our Commitment to Partnership We believe in a strong home-school connection that supports the progress of the child in and out of the classroom. In that spirit, we are committed to a long and productive partnership with families that centers the child and navigates the inevitable ups and downs of child development.

Parents/Guardians in the Classroom SF Day welcomes parents in the classroom at developmentally appropriate times. In kindergarten, parents are welcome to stay until “big hug” time as their child learns to transition from home to school. All parents are also invited to select assemblies and Open Classrooms, where they will get to see their child’s learning in action.

Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences SF Day holds Parent/Guardian-Teacher Conferences twice a year, in the fall and spring. They offer parents/guardians a chance to gain further insight into their child’s progress and are held after the written interim progress reports are sent. Though these are the “official” meetings with faculty, parent/guardian questions and concerns are always welcome and we are here to listen.

SAN FRANCISCO DAY SCHOOL

Getting Involved Meet the PGA Every parent and guardian at SF Day is a valued member of the Parents and Guardians Association, or PGA. Volunteerism is an essential aspect of our community. As our children watch parents, guardians, grandparents, and alumni give generously of their time and talent, they learn the importance and value of giving back.

Make an Impact Volunteering provides many benefits, including the opportunity to explore your child’s school life and get to know their classmates. It also provides an opportunity to build relationships with staff, teachers, fellow parents and guardians, and see firsthand how our mission is carried out every day. Each year, volunteers contribute to a range of projects and events through our PGA. There are many ways to get involved according to your interests, experience, and schedule. You can: • Serve as a Room Parent/Guardian • Participate in the Community, Culture & Engagement (CCE) Council • Serve as a Class Captain for the Annual Fund • Volunteer as an Admission Ambassador • Help plan SF Day Fest • Volunteer at SF Day • Volunteer as a chaperone on CCE Days At the start of each school year, current SF Day parents/guardians are invited to complete a Volunteer Form to share their interests.
