Hello alumni and friends!

Boy has 2020 been one crazy ride! When students left the schools for online learning last March due to the pandemic, we weren’t sure what the 2020-2021 school year was going to look like. Fortunately, we are able to have kids back at school and in the classrooms. Having kids back on campus and activities up and running makes all the difference in our schools’ wonderful atmosphere and community.

So far this school year, the Lady Knights varsity volleyball team came into the season ranked number one and have been putting in work on the court to hold that spot. The boys varsity golf team has been cleaning up the competition, earning the team title at the City Meet championship on September 22nd. We have celebrated events such as the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl XLII and Homecoming as well as inducted eight new alumni into the 2020 O’Gorman/Cathedral Hall of Fame.

Unfortunately, all of the reunions planned for 2020 were cancelled due to the pandemic but be sure to keep an eye out for updates as many will be rescheduling for a future date! Updates on all alumni happenings can be found on our website at www.ogknights.org/alumni/alumni-happenings.

Celebrating excellent teachers in Catholic education!

Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, the Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern South Dakota and the Diocese of Sioux Falls have partnered together to celebrate excellent teachers in Catholic education. Teachers are the core of the education and success of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools’ students. To celebrate the excellent faculty at all schools and all levels, the Teacher of Excellence program was started.

The Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern South Dakota started an endowment through a very generous anonymous donor to support the hard work and dedication of these outstanding teachers. All teachers had the opportunity to nominate their peers for the Teacher of Excellence Award. To be nominated, teachers had to meet the following criteria: Nominees must teach at least half time and have their own classroom.

Nominees must have a minimum of three years experience.

Teachers may be nominated in consecutive years.

Teachers are eligible to be honored once every five years.

Fellow teachers, priests and administration at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools nominated a total of 18 teachers for the 2020 Teacher of Excellence Awards. Nominations are processed by the Office of Catholic Schools at the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls. From there, a selection committee, consisting of retired and former Catholic school faculty members and principals, met to go through the nominations and supporting documents to decide on the winners. Nominees’ names and the schools they teach at were kept anonymous throughout the voting process so that the selection committee could focus exclusively on the written content that was provided for each nominee. This way, the way in which a teacher exemplifies the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools’ mission and values could remain the most important piece of the judging process.

The following eight categories acted as the selection criteria for the winners.

Once the winners were selected, an event was held on Friday, August 14th at the O’Gorman High School campus on McEneaney Field to honor those teachers. All staff at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools attended the event that morning to recognize these exceptional educators. Each of the 18 nominees received a certificate and a lanyard pin at the event in congratulations of their exemplary teaching in Catholic education.

Throughout the nomination process, it was evident that there were many good candidates demonstrating excellence in their classrooms. For this inaugural year of the program, four winners were selected for the Teachers of Excellence Award. Those winners include Teresa Fester, theater and speech teacher at O’Gorman High School, Jeff Gordon, social studies teacher at O’Gorman High School, Ben Koch, director of bands at O’Gorman High School and Katie Meert, 2nd grade teacher at Christ the King Elementary. Each of these four award winners received a check in the amount of $10,000 thanks to a very generous donor.

All four attended Christ the King and O’Gorman High School with fond memories and wonderful experiences. They now all lead lives of service in teaching, nursing and finance. I attribute this not only to their mother but to the amazing work of our schools. As I begin my 44th year in these uncertain times, I continue to greatly appreciate our community which is not just a series of buildings, but a place to grow and thrive.” - Jeff Gordon “The opportunity to actually work and perform with these students seems to me, especially in retrospect, as a treasure of inestimable value. ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM

O’Gorman High School provides many different opportunities for students with a wide variety of interests. One that helps serve students and their future career goals is the athletic training program. O’Gorman High School has partnered with Avera to offer a program to students with an interest in sports medicine to see what the profession has to offer.

The program includes a class titled Prevention and Care, taught by the school’s athletic trainers, for students to learn about sports medicine and experience hands on training with the varsity athletic teams. The classes cover material such as common sports injuries, treatments and preventative care and practices. Students are able to care for the student-athletes by providing preventative measures and post-injury intervention, including acute care, rehabilitation services and emergency care.

Junior, Peter Nguyen, joined the athletic training program for new experiences and to meet new people. He is involved in band and costuming for the theater department and wanted to get involved in something athletics-related. He said through the program he has made some of his closest friends. Peter hopes to pursue a career in medicine. He wants to do a general surgery focus but enjoys the fast pace environment of sports medicine. “I have always wanted to go into medicine and the specialty is always changing, so sports medicine is a big contender after surgery,” said Peter. He hopes his experience and training received through the athletic training program will help him better prepare for his future in medicine.

In addition to the educational benefits of the program, Avera provides O’Gorman with two full-time Certified Athletic Trainers as well as one Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. “Having daily access to a strength coach is a huge benefit for the students.

They are able to do sport-specific workouts all year, which gives them a competitive advantage and decreases injury,” said Tiffany Giese, O’Gorman’s Head Athletic Trainer. All students have access to the athletic trainers but the sports that are determined to be higher risk for injury have a Certified Athletic Trainer available during their practices and games. These sports include football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, cheer, dance, wrestling, boys and girls basketball, gymnastics and track and field.

Along with the full-time employees in the school every day, Avera also provides a physician that comes to the school weekly. That physician then evaluates student-athletes and gives further care if necessary. This resource is extremely valuable for the students and their families, as it often saves them a lot of time, which is always important during the sports seasons.

2020 INDUCTEES 2020 brought eight inductees into the O’Gorman-Cathedral Hall of Fame. Full bios are included on their plaques, which now hang in the Hall of Fame hallway at O’Gorman High School (outside the Performing Arts Center balcony).

BISHOP DONALD KETTLER – EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE Bishop Donald Kettler attended Cathedral until he felt the calling to the priesthood after 8th grade. He then went off to seminary school at Trinity High School. After being ordained a priest in 1970, he went on to be pastor at parishes within Aberdeen and Sioux Falls until 2002.

During this time, he played an instrumental part in working with Dr. Tom Lorang in forming the Catholic school system we now know today as Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. In 2002, he was asked by Pope John Paul II to serve as Bishop of the Dioceses of Fairbanks, Alaska. He was then asked in 2013 to serve as the Bishop of the Diocese of Saint Cloud, MN. Now, after 50 years of service, Bishop Kettler is retiring to pursue ministry in different ways.

SR. PATRICIA CONNOLLY, DC ‘61 – DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI Sr. Patricia Connolly graduated from Cathedral High School in 1961 and, upon graduation, committed to the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in St. Louis, MO. She has dedicated her life to service to the poor helping countless people throughout the country in many poverty-stricken communities. She has served as a community leader across 17 states of the Daughters of Charity Province, as a NGO Representative of the Community at the United Nations in NYC as well as an Initiator of Interfaith Welcome Coalition which assists refugees escaping violence and poverty to come across the border to their families. The Daughters’ community motto, “The Love of Jesus Crucified Urges Us” continues to be at the heart of her experiences as a Daughter of Charity.

MARK O’CONNOR ’69 – DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI Mark O’Connor is a 1969 O’Gorman graduate who joined the military upon graduating from high school. He was deployed to Vietnam and returned home with PTSD as so many soldiers do. To help combat the stress caused by this, he found peace in helping others. Mark started a non-profit business called Bicycles for Education Vietnam providing children in the povertystricken country with bicycles allowing children the opportunity to attend school. Mark and his organization have now donated close to 900 bicycles to children in Vietnam, who without them would not have the opportunity to receive an education.

TOBY GREEN ’80 – DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI Toby Green is a 1980 graduate of O’Gorman who was appointed to West Point Academy and graduated in 1984. Upon graduating, he pursued a career of service to the country encompassing nearly 30 years in the US Army. His military service included assignments with Armored Calvary units station or deployed in locations across the globe and he acted as a commander of many active battalions in both the Golf and Iraq Wars. Among his 40 military awards, Toby earned two “Top Gun” honors, an Air Assault Badge, Airborne wings, a Combat Action Badge and the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device for valor. Upon retirement from the Army, Toby served as a military advisor to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Land Forces and assisted the UAE Land Forces in creating three training centers.

MAGGIE DONOHUE GREEN ‘99 – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS Maggie is a 1999 O’Gorman graduate that played tennis, volleyball, track and cross country for the Knights, earning a total of eleven varsity letters. She joined the varsity tennis team in seventh grade, won eight state high school titles and was named to the state alltournament team five times. She also qualified for several USTA Sectional and National Tennis Tournaments during her USTA junior career and was ranked as high as #6 in the USTA Northern Section. Capping her high school career, Maggie received the Margaret Lynch Award as the Outstanding O’Gorman High School Female Athlete and the SDHSAA Leadership and Outstanding Female Athlete Award as a member of the 1998-1999 South Dakota “Elite 15.”

She then went on to play tennis at Notre Dame where she won one Big East title and the team was ranked as high as the #15 team in the country.

LIZ DONOHUE WHEELER ‘02 – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS Liz is a 2002 O’Gorman graduate that played tennis, volleyball, track and cross country for the Knights, earning twelve total varsity letters. She joined the varsity tennis team in seventh grade, won six state high school titles, including the First Flight Singles title three times and was named to the state all-tournament team six times. Liz compiled a 125-1 single record and a 104-21 doubles record. Capping her high school career, Liz received the Margaret Lynch Award as the Outstanding OGHS Female Athlete and the 2001 South Dakota Girls Prep Athlete of the Year. She then went on to play tennis at Notre Dame where she won three Big East titles and the team was ranked the #2 team in the country.

TESSA WILKA ARECHIGA ‘07 - EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS Tessa is a 2007 O’Gorman graduate who was a starting varsity player for the Lady Knights basketball team starting as a sophomore. She helped lead the Knights to some impressive feats over those years and accumulated a set of impressive accolades for herself including making the All-City team and All-Conference Team all three years as starting point guard for the Knights. She also made the Argus Leader Top 10 (first and second team) and was Honorable Mention for the McDonald’s All-American Basketball team. Tessa also set school records for most 3-pointers in a career at 127 and most blocks in a game at 7. Tessa then went on to play basketball at Augustana University until she graduated with an Elementary Education degree in 2012.

2001-2005 GYMNASTICS TEAM – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS The Knights varsity gymnastics team from 2001-2005 exemplified standout athleticism. They won the team titles of GDC conference champions, region champions and state champions all four years. They also placed first in every meet during all four of those years except for one second-place finish in an invitational in the 2001-2002 season. They took an admirable number of individual titles along the way including, 18 GDC conference titles, 17 region titles and 14 total state titles. State titles include four vault titles, two bars titles, two beam titles, three floor titles and three all-around titles. They also had a total of 14 All-State Team members over those four years with state record holders in two events. The Knights also achieved the Team High School Scoring Record for the state of South Dakota set in the 2005 state competition with a score of 152.449, a record that still stands today.

HELP US RESTORE THE O’G CLASS COMPOSITES! The composite photos in the hallways at O’Gorman High School have become a staple for the building. Whether you graduated 50 or more years ago or you just graduated last year, everyone loves to look at the class composites of all the O’Gorman High School graduates.

The composites have been hanging in the high school hallways for decades now. Due to the amount of time these pictures have been on display, a large portion of them have had a considerable amount of wear and tear. To keep these pictures in pristine condition, we have created a fund designated for the restoration of the composite photos. A number of composites will be restored when we reach our $19,000 goal. We are hoping to raise this amount by June of 2021 to get all the replacements ordered and hung over the summer months.

To help keep the history of O’Gorman High School alive and well in our hallways, please consider donating. If you or someone you know is interested in donating towards the fund, donations can be made on the Alumni Page of our website: www.ogknights.org/alumni/class-composites-fund.

Each composite costs about $500 to restore. Our goal is to replace the 38 class composites that are most in need of restoration. All money raised over the goal amount will be held in an account specifically for composite restorations so we can restore them in the future when needed.

The Bob Burns Dakota Bowl XLII took place at McEneaney Field on Saturday, September 12, 2020. Dakota Bowl XLII was the first EVER Dakota Bowl to be played on McEneaney Field, making it one for the history books! This year’s Dakota Bowl was a bit different due to limited spectators but still packed with fun for all!

Tailgating kicked off in the O’Gorman High School parking lot at 3pm before the game. Tailgaters gathered with friends, enjoyed SDSU ice cream and shopped Knightwear from The Knight Locker to get ready for the big game. The Dakota Bowl XLII pre-game show featured skydivers sponsored by Coca-Cola, Billion Automotive First Down presentation, Mount Marty University Fans in the Stands answered questions about knight history, our Woody Drey Award winner was announced and our raffle winners were drawn for the $5,000 cash prize! Our halftime included the O’Gorman Marching Knights performing “Into the Deep” and a spectacular fireworks show sponsored by Guarantee Roofing.

This year’s Woody Drey Award went to Bill Townsend! Bill is a 1980 O’Gorman graduate that has been an avid supporter of the schools over the years. He played in the very first Dakota Bowl back in 1978 and is in the Cathedral/O’Gorman Hall of Fame for Excellence in Athletics. He attended Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools throughout his childhood and has remained an avid supporter of the schools over all these years. He and his wife are Foundation members and were active Dakota Bowl committee members for decades. Bill also played an integral part in the Building on Excellence campaign to help O’Gorman raise millions to rebuild O’Gorman High School and support the teacher salary endowment. His four children are also all O’Gorman graduates. Congratulations Bill!

Another big congratulations to our raffle winners, Cindy Scheidt and Tedd Thompson. Cindy won the first place $5,000 cash prize and Tedd won the second place prize of one $500 gift card to Scheels and one $500 gift card to The Diamond Room. Special thanks to all that participated and bought a raffle ticket in support of Dakota Bowl XLII! For those that weren’t able to come to the game, we encouraged at-home watch parties or catching the game at one of our watch party locations. Special thanks to our watch party locations that livestreamed the game at their establishments and offered Dakota Bowl specials in which a portion of proceeds came back to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Those watch party locations include Shenanigan’s Bar & Grill, Blue Rock Bar & Grill, McNally’s Irish Pub and The Rush. A few lucky at-home watch parties also won free Pizza Ranch pizza for their watch parties! A newly featured “Donate From Every State” campaign, where we asked our fans from across the country to donate in support of the Knights, ended up with donations from a total of 15 states for a total of $3,340 raised!

Thanks to all that donated and helped us turn the map blue!

With donations still rolling in, the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl XLII has raised more than $120,000 net for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools! We cannot thank everyone enough for making this possible. Your generosity and continued support is greatly appreciated. The Knights took on the number one-ranked Roosevelt Rough Riders. The Knights couldn’t come out with a win in this tough battle and lost 48-0.

KNIGHT NOTES Honoring Mrs. Martell Christ the King Elementary celebrated Mrs. Martell and her 47 years of service in September. Mrs. Martell retired from teaching at the end of last year. They honored her with a special plate featuring a tree with students’ thumbprints for the leaves.

Elementary School Fundraising Some of our elementary schools are celebrating big successes in their school fundraisers this fall. Both Christ the King Elementary and St. Katharine Drexel Elementary held social-distanced Walk-A-Thons for their students to raise funds for their school. Both met their goals and celebrated with snow cones after their Walk-A-Thons.

The 411 on Dialing 9-1-1 St. Lambert Elementary students were taught all about the importance of dialing 9-1-1 this fall. Officer Runyan stopped by their classroom to teach them the proper procedures and when it is important to make that call. The lesson has these students ready for any emergency.

New Chaplain at Holy Spirit!

Holy Spirit Elementary students started the new school year with a new Chaplain! O’Gorman Alumni Fr. Tony Klein ‘12 stopped by their classrooms to introduce himself. He has already been spotted out at recess playing with the students.

OGJH School Mass O’Gorman Junior High is celebrating Mass a little differently this school year. Every other week, 7th and 8th grade students swap live Mass for a livestreamed Mass in their homerooms. The class who is viewing in their homeroom have Communion brought to them for a full Mass experience.

This year’s O’Gorman Homecoming court included seniors (from left to right), Luke Tunge, Katherine Kolb, John Brunner, Allison Junker, Simon Zimprich, Allison Kassing, Kathleen Gellerman, Charles Bills, Brooke Oberbroekling and Edward Meylor. Simon Zimprich was selected as Homecoming King and Allison Kassing as Homecoming Queen. They were crowned at this year’s Variety Show during the Homecoming week festivities.

The Marching Knights took third at the Big Sioux Review on September 26! They also hosted Festival of Bands along with Lincoln, Washington and Roosevelt on October 3. They will compete with their 2020 show, “Into the Deep,” at the Dutchmen Field Championships later this year. Go Knights!

The tournament took place in Rapid City October 8-9.

CROSS COUNTRY

Junior William Sanford finished first at the City Meet championship and placed third individually at the state tournament. The Knights took third place as a team at the state tournament.

The girls varsity cross country team won the Huron Invite on September 19th. Senior Katie Castelli won first with a time of 18:50 and junior Alea Hardie placed second with a time of 18:55.

The Lady Knights came into the season ranked number one and have been working hard on the court to hold that spot. They won the SD Class AA blue division of the Pentagon Invitational on Saturday, September 26 for the Sanford title! They are currently undefeated (as of Oct. 16) with a very promising season ahead of them. Go Knights!

WHY WE WEAR GREEN Have you ever wondered why it is that we sometimes wear green instead of blue at sporting events?

It’s history! Back before O’Gorman High School was established, the Catholic high school in Sioux Falls was called Cathedral High School.

Back then, Cathedral High School and Washington High School were the only two high schools in town. So whenever we play against Washington at home, we wear green to pay homage to Cathedral High School and the old rivalry between the two schools.

Cathedral High School’s mascot was the Irish and their school colors were green and gold. The Catholic high school was officially established as O’Gorman High School back in 1961. It was then that the Knights were born and the school colors were changed to blue and white. Go Knights!

‘55 Lorraine (Hauck) Young Snyders retired in September 2019 from Sanford Health in the medical records department after 35 years. She now lives at Dow Rummel Village. ‘57 Anthony and Mary Jo (Winkel) Bechtold celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 30, 2020 at their home of 50 years in Escondido, CA. They celebrated at their home with their five children and their spouses, six of their eleven grandchildren and one of their four great-grandchildren.

‘61 Nancy Scott used to show and train horses. She no longer has any horses and had a stable on the Sioux Falls Fairgrounds.

“Friends were my teachers - Had a big 4-H Club,” writes Nancy.

‘64 Mary Jo (De Reu) Harvey has been retired for 4 years. She worked as an LPN at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls and a hospital in Denver, CO. She also worked as a teacher assistant for a while. She writes, “I live with my daughter and enjoy crafting, volunteering and taking care of 4 dogs!”

‘65 Sheryl (Holden) Lance and her husband have moved back to Idaho to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Her husband is now retired from the US Court of Appeals for Veteran Claims and they look forward to spending retirement with family.

‘12 James Brule married Catherine Riddle on May 16th, 2020. Due to COVID-19, they had to cancel their wedding and reception set in Saint Marys, PA (Catherine’s hometown) and instead got married at Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel at the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. Catherine and James will both be graduating with their degrees from the University of Mary in December.

‘12 James and ‘12 Josie (Heisel) Gaspar welcomed Annabelle “Annie” Mae Gaspar into the world on September 9, 2020.

She weighed 8lbs 9oz and was 21 inches long. “We are absolutely in love with our little girl,” writes Josie.

She went to SDSU for nursing and is now employed at Avera.

‘15 Mitchell and ‘15 Christina (Salter) Jarding welcomed a beautiful, baby boy, Brigham (Briggs) Edward, into the world on March 16, 2020 at 11:48 PM. Briggs was 6lbs, 10oz and 19.25 inches.

‘15 Kristina Wagner married Riley Erickson on May 23, 2020. Kristina is an art teacher at O’Gorman Junior High and St. Michael Elementary.

2020 GOLF CLASSIC The 29th Annual O’Gorman Golf Classic was a great success for the Athletic Boosters!

Held on September 21 at Willow Run Golf Course, the 125 participants were treated to a beautiful day of 80 degrees with little to no wind!

The tradition of the O’Gorman Golf Classic was started by devoted parents of O’Gorman High School students as a way to generate extra income to help offset athletic costs.

This year we celebrated Monsignor James Andraschko for his dedication to the tournament and Catholic education in Sioux Falls. The Monsignor Andraschko Cup was awarded to the top flight winners, Scott Backes, Will Kappenmann, Rob Marshall and Mike Meekins.

Monsignor has played in the tournament every year since its inception with tournament founder and teammate, Rod Fieldsend. Sharing his wisdom to all players, Msgr. Andraschko stated, “Never underestimate the power of prayer when the ball is in flight.”

‘49 Robert Edrich passed away on July 24, 2020. ‘53 Dennis Deruytter passed away on September 24, 2019.
