AN INSPIRATION FOR GIVING SUE BROWN F R I END O F T H E FOUND ATION Calling the Community Foundation the place where her passion and professionalism came together, Sue Brown continues to be an inspiration for giving. As the second president of the Community Foundation, she put the organization on the trajectory of growth that continues today. She built a strong infrastructure for both operations and for grantmaking that enables the Foundation to innovate and respond to needs thoughtfully. She connected the Community Foundation to local philanthropists and nurtured a culture of giving. For those reasons, and for her ongoing leadership in philanthropy, we are proud to recognize Sue Brown as the 2018 Friend of the Foundation. “The founding Board members had a vision of quality and what this organization could become for the community,” she observed recently. “The Community Foundation’s growth accelerated because donors discovered how unique and flexible it is to achieve their philanthropic objectives. People come through the door because they have a story, a wish, a tragedy, a desire to do something great for the community. It was a privilege to respond to whatever brought them to the Community Foundation.” Brown’s contributions go above and beyond the day-to-day work of the Foundation shares President Andy Patterson. “The Friend of the Foundation goes to someone who has accomplished a great deal through philanthropy — as an example and encourager of giving, as a leader in recognizing and responding to community needs, and by demonstrating care and enthusiasm for progress in the Sioux Falls area. Sue has done all that and more for our region and state. We are proud to honor her with this award.”

These funds benefit worthy charitable activities in your hometown without the hassle and expense of creating and running a separate foundation. Most often, a group of neighbors and civic leaders establish the endowment and spearhead fundraising and all grantmaking activities.

STAYIN G A CTIV E A N D H A PPY.

Still driving at age 98 is rare, but Claude Hone is rare. A former WWII Corsair pilot, his motto is “stay active and remain happy.” Following his own counsel, he continues to golf, dance, and give back. For example, after adopting a cat, he recommended a grant to a Humane Society in appreciation for the organization’s care for animals. Thanks, Claude, for being a role model and inspiration!

Fourteen years ago, Bill and Lynne Byrne established their fund at the Community Foundation. “Lynne and I both believe in local philanthropy. Helping various great causes gives us joy and the Foundation alerts us to new projects we may want to consider. Working with the staff takes the hassle out of the giving process,” says Bill. Among other benefits, giving through the Foundation is an efficient and easy-to-manage process keeping their giving organized.

REFLECTING PERSONAL INTERESTS.

Grantmaker Joe Floyd’s recommendations mirror his entrepreneurial spirit and hobbies. “I’m a history enthusiast, appreciate education, and love cars. I’m lucky because my hobbies have led me to give towards projects that incorporate all of these.” Floyd recently gave to the Stockyards Ag Experience for grade school field trips and to the Early Ford V-8 Foundation & Museum in Auburn, Indiana for the museum expansion that will house his 1936 Ford car collection. His interest in education was shared by his late wife, Elaine. She loved the Butterfly House & Aquarium, and Joe continues to support youth education programming in her memory.

Grants from T h e C o m m u n i t y F u n d support nonprofit organizations and activities addressing our area’s most important needs and opportunities. Grants from T h e C o m m u n i t y F u n d are made to charitable organizations benefiting our service area of Minnehaha, Lincoln, McCook, and Turner counties. The Grants Committee gives funding priority to build new or expand quality programs, improve organizational efficiencies, and provide a financial safety net in times of uncertainty. Each year, the Community Foundation receives requests far exceeding its available grant funds. In fiscal 2018, the Community Foundation distributed over $300,000 in grants to valued local organizations.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE Establishing a scholarship fund is an opportunity for a donor to touch lives far into the future. These educational awards recognize students from a variety of backgrounds who dream of developing a purpose that enriches the lives of others. Working with the founding donor, the Community Foundation helps clarify criteria and develop an objective process for evaluating applicants. With more than 90 scholarship opportunities offering approximately $200,000 in award funds annually, the Foundation relies on community volunteers and high school faculty to evaluate applications.

When everyone in the community shares their gifts, you get something wonderful. For 35 years, the volunteers of the Trent Area Scholarship Committee hosted a Soup & Pie Supper to raise money for the scholarship fund. Now, a perpetual endowment provides opportunities for students like Tomi Hagedorn to pursue their educational dreams.

Reviewing scholarship applications requires time, thoughtful reading, and an understanding of the award criteria. The Community Foundation is grateful to the many volunteers who served on selection panels this past year. They make sure the vision of the founding donor is being honored. Over the past 30 years, scholarships sponsored by Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith, LLP have benefited over 240 high school seniors from Minnehaha, Lincoln, McCook, Lake, Moody and Turner counties. Winners must demonstrate academic excellence, achievement in extra-curricular activities, and good character. This year, eight students were selected and each awarded a $2,500 scholarship at a reception held at the firm.

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS When a donor establishes a field of interest fund, he or she is expressing a big interest in a particular area of philanthropic work. This can be a broad subject area near and dear to the donor’s heart such as children, the arts, animals, or the environment. The Community Foundation’s expertise creates a process for making grants to worthy organizations. We are proud to share just a few of the grants made during FY 2018 from these funds.

A safe, secure place to stay for people without a home, the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House provides shelter and other services. Support from the Sioux Empire Fund for Hunger Relief assures a hot lunch on a cold day.

GET SCREEN ED.

Falls Community Health was named the 2018 Organization of the Year by the South Dakota Comprehensive Cancer Control Program’s Colorectal Cancer Task Force. This is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the U.S. and early detection is key. With funding from the L i n d s ay A n n Masterson Memorial – Medical Services Endowment, the clinic launched initiatives to prioritize and advance colorectal cancer screening.

A grant from the C.J. “D e l ” a n d A l e n e D e l b r i d g e F a m i ly E n d o w m e n t helped Lunch is Served, Inc. provide over 22,000 lunches to workers in Sioux Falls who do not have the means to pay for a daily lunch. The brown bag lunches help people remain productive on the job, stay healthy, and support their families.

There they enjoy health and fitness programs and learn career and character skills to prepare them for life’s challenges. The Y o u t h E n r i c h m e n t S e r v i c e s E n d o w m e n t supports this valuable assistance to youth and families.

CONNECTING STUDENTS & CARING Inspiring young people to continue the rich tradition of philanthropy is the goal of the Community Foundationâ€™s Youth Advisory Council (YAC). EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION Sioux Falls area teachers go the extra mile for their students. On behalf of these volunteer efforts, the Community Foundation can oversee finances for short-term charitable endeavors. Each endeavor is consistent with the Community Foundationâ€™s mission and benefits the people who live, work, play, and raise their families in our area. In addition to the pictured causes, the Community Foundation is proud to serve as fiscal sponsor for the Community Indoor Tennis Center, the Dell Rapids Trailway, Great Bear Tubing Hill Renovation, the Nicolai House Project Fund, Stockyards Ag Experience, and the Falls Community Health Medication Assistance Project.

ENCOUR AG I NG CO M M U N IT Y HA R M O N Y. In June 2019, Sioux Falls will become home to Levitt at the Falls, a fully accessible outdoor amphitheater in Falls Park West. With a goal of building a stronger community through music, Levitt at the Falls will offer 50 free concerts each year. The Community Foundation served as fiduciary for the initial phase of its fundraising efforts.

While the State Theatreâ€™s renovation campaign continues, the Community Foundation released the contributions received from its first phase of fundraising. The revitalized effort for this jewel of downtown Sioux Falls goes forward and it will once again draw crowds for great entertainment.

Nonprofit organizations enrich our community through the services they provide. To help them in their work, the Community Foundation serves as a steward of both designated endowments — established by thoughtful donors — and endowments created by an agency for its benefit. These permanent funds are long-term, stable sources of revenue to assure the success of each organization’s charitable mission. As partners in this work, we have a common goal: to create and grow enduring support that results in stronger organizations serving our community. The Community Foundation handles investment management and fiduciary responsibilities related to the endowment so the organization’s staff and volunteer time can be dedicated to fulfilling the mission. With more than 147 local organizations benefiting from a Community Foundation endowment, we are proud to share just a few examples of the good work that results from these perpetual funds.

Eight endowment funds help Active Generations promote positive aging and connect older adults. Something for almost everyone, there can be up to 15 activities a day offered throughout the area. This year’s 50th anniversary picnic brought together members, their families, staff, and volunteers for fun and friendship.

Getting to a job is the first step in keeping a job. The S t . F r a n c i s H o u s e E n d o w m e n t provides practical assistance to individuals like Tyler, who can get to work thanks to a car gifted by a generous donor. At St. Francis House guests build a new future by living in transitional housing, working, and developing positive financial habits.

The A l z h e i m e r ' s A ss o c i at i o n – S o u t h D a k o ta E d u c at i o n F u n d was established in 1998 to provide services and education to Alzheimer’s disease victims and their families. Support groups give ongoing encouragement to individuals and families.

S i o u x F a l l s P u b l i c S c h o o l s E d u c at i o n F o u n d at i o n E n d o w m e n t is a resource for educational projects and activities not funded by public tax dollars for early childhood through 12th grade students in Sioux Falls public schools. Te a c h e r s a n d s t u d e n t s , l i k e t h e s e i n t h e Hawthorne Gifted Education program, are beneficiaries of this additional funding.

Grants from the S p e c i a l O ly m p i cs S o u t h D a k o ta F u n d and the C o l l i n , C a r r o l , a n d C o d y K o l l a r s E n d o w m e n t offer athletes of every ability the opportunity to compete at sports. Those with intellectual disabilities develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship. TYPES OF FUNDS COMMUNITY FUND

Donors who make gifts to THE COMMUNITY FUND or other unrestricted endowments help us meet the ever evolving needs in our area. Contributions to THE COMMUNITY FUND result in grants helping nonprofit organizations ensure the quality of life in our community. Grant decisions are made by the Board and Grants Committee.

AFFILIATE COMMUNITY FUNDS

Benefiting neighboring cities and towns, affiliate funds are started by donors and civic leaders in those communities. SFACF invests these endowments; local committees advise the grants.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Donor advised funds are ideal for donors who want to be active philanthropists. Donor advised endowment funds are low cost alternatives to private family foundations enabling you and your successors to advise distributions—or grants— that will be made from the fund’s assets. Nonpermanent donor advised funds are best suited for individuals, families, and businesses that wish to organize and simplify their charitable giving. Your gift to the fund is deductible in the current tax year, but distributions can be made over the next several years. Fund statements give you a record of all the donations — and grants — you’ve advised that year, allowing you to easily track your giving history.

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS

These endowments are created by donors who want to support a general area of philanthropic work. Whether your interests lie in youth enrichment, the arts, or outdoor recreation, we will work with you to design a grant selection process that achieves your vision.

ORGANIZATION OR DESIGNATED FUNDS The Community Foundation manages more than 1,000 funds that support neighborhood non-profits whose good works educate and entertain, give a hand up to those in need, strengthen faith, and build character. Most of these funds are permanent endowments established with gifts of $15,000 or more. Carefully invested and managed, endowments are designed to last for good, for ever, compounding the benefits of gifts many times over. It is our privilege to serve as steward of the funds listed. Funds added in FY 2018 are in bold. If you have questions about a fund or would like to start a fund, please contact us at 336-7055.

These endowments are established by a charitable organization for its own benefit or by individuals who want to name a specific charity to receive an annual distribution in the future. Many donors select charities that have personally touched their lives or they have supported for many years.

SCHOLARSHIPS

You can outline the criteria students must meet to receive the scholarship you establish and thereby invest in the next generation. With your assistance, students achieve their academic goals, all the way from preschool through postgraduate studies.

FOREVER IS A LONG TIME.

Each fund is backed by an agreement that specifies how the donor wants yearly distributions to be used. In the future, as today merges into thousands of tomorrows, if we are unable to fulfill the donor’s specific intentions, the Community Foundation will find and support the charitable activity closest to the donor’s original wishes. SUSAN SCHMEICHEL HARDER

grew up in the farmland of rural Hurley, South Dakota. She holds a B.A. in art and Spanish from Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas, and a M.S. in art therapy from Mount Mary University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Harder works as a registered art therapist and addiction counselor at Avera Behavioral Health Outpatient Services. She lives in Sioux Falls with her Washington High School band director husband, Ben, and two cats, Hildegard and Terry.

My art is almost always based on the connection between people and the environment around them. “Special Blend” was created specifically with the community of Sioux Falls in mind. This city has an expanding collection of people, perspectives, and belief systems that makes for a distinct and vibrant palette. I am grateful to be creating art in a city that seeks and inspires growth and progress. Growth brings change to one’s environment and challenges us with new ways of living and working together as a dynamic system.

On behalf of “United Community Services,” attorney Marvin K. Bailin researches feasibility of creating a foundation to accept charitable gifts and bequests on behalf of the community.

1976

Marv Bailin, Bill Barlow, John Foster, Frank Weatherwax, Oscar Austad and Val Beckman apply for tax- exempt status for “Sioux Falls Area Foundation, A Community Trust.”

2002

SFACF selects 18 neighborhood nonprofits to participate in the second phase of the Kresge Foundation Partnership to Raise Community Capital.

2006 Candy Hanson succeeds as president/CEO. Total assets each $50 million.

1984 Sioux Falls Area Foundation is officially launched with three funds. Rosemary Draeger is president/CEO.

2008 City Blossom, an annual fundraiser for The Community Fund, is launched.

1988 Assets exceed $1 million. $21,000 in annual grants are made.

2013

1995 Assets under management are at $5 million. Sue Brown becomes president/CEO. 1999

2000 We re-incorporate as the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

Sioux Falls Area Foundation is selected as one of six sites to participate in the Kresge Foundation Partnership to Raise Community Capital.

Assets under management eclipse $100 million. The Depot at Cherapa Place becomes our new home.

2015 Andy Patterson named president/ CEO. Grant distributions exceed $11 million. 2018 Grant distributions surpass $150 million to charitable causes since our beginning!
