We’ve long believed that Community Foundations are civic institutions which operate with a dual purpose — to act not only as good stewards of donors’ charitable assets, but to also serve the recipients of those assets. In other words, as a Community Foundation, we need to responsibly manage the charitable funds we are entrusted with, and we need to know, understand and respond to the needs of the community those funds support.

I would argue that in the Foundation’s 36-year history, there’s never been a year where we’ve been called to understand, respond and adapt to our community’s needs more than during our 2019-20 fiscal year.

From the unprecedented loss and uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic to the painful issues of racial injustice that sadly still exist in our society today, over the last 12 months the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, in partnership with our donors, has stepped forward to help in extraordinary ways, adapting to develop solutions for a myriad of complex challenges facing our community today.

Emergency funding for front-line nonprofits affected by the pandemic, housing assistance for those impacted by COVID-19, a fund to inspire and develop emerging leaders among our city’s diverse populations and grants to support workforce development are just a few examples of our work from our last fiscal year — all of which illustrate the Foundation’s commitment to understand the needs of our community, to adapt in response to those needs, and to develop strategic investments and innovative solutions.

That’s the beauty of a Community Foundation. Anchored by our deep roots in this area and in our commitment to help create good, forever, we stand ready and willing to help whenever and wherever our community needs it — that means thinking creatively about how philanthropy can fuel momentum during good times, and how it can serve as a catalyst for good during times of great challenge.

To that end, we’re proud to share stories of agents of change at work in our community today. Individuals, families, businesses and movements whose work to inspire and nurture aspiring leaders, build stronger communities, navigate uncertainty, adapt to change and create meaningful dialogue is strengthened thanks to the power and purpose of philanthropy.

While we celebrate these agents of change throughout our community, we know and understand that the good work we’re recognizing from our last fiscal year could not have happened without the support of others who make our work possible.

We express our gratitude and appreciation for past Foundation leadership, including our dear friend Sue Brown, who we lost this year. We’re grateful for our Board of Directors, forwardthinking, insightful and entrepreneurial individuals who have led the Foundation before us, as well as those who volunteer their time today to provide leadership and counsel. Our Board has been instrumental in paving the way for the Foundation to respond to the unexpected when the unexpected came.

We also thank our donors — generous, passionate and caring individuals, families and businesses who love this community, who believe in our mission and have joined our movement to create a better, brighter tomorrow through philanthropy. It gives us great pride to share that in the time since our fiscal year closed on June 30 the Foundation, in partnership with our donors, has reached an important milestone — we have now awarded a record $200 million in grants to nonprofits and causes throughout our area. What an amazing and inspiring illustration of the spirit of giving and care that exists here.

UPHOLDING A LEGACY OF CARE

Alliance Communications came to the Community Foundation with an idea for how the business could give back to local communities in its service area. We helped its Keep the Change program come to life and today, nearly $400,000 has been awarded from this fund to help local nonprofits and causes working to build a better tomorrow.

After she was lost in a tragic car accident, the family of Ashley Evans established a scholarship in her memory at the Community Foundation. Today, the Ashley Elizabeth Evans Medical School Scholarship is helping to create future physicians like Mykayla Palmer of Brandon, while preserving the legacy of a young woman who was passionate about making a difference and helping those in need.

CREATING DIALOGUE THROUGH ART

Each fall, students file into Chad Nelson’s classroom at Brandon Valley High School expecting to learn about art history and artistic concepts while building experience working with different media like ink, watercolor, charcoal, clay and more.

It doesn’t take long for Nelson’s students to realize they’re actually learning about far more than just drawing, painting, printmaking or sculpting.

“I know my purpose as an art teacher is not to teach everyone to be an artist. I see my function as an art teacher to teach my students creative problem solving skills,” he said. “To look at things in new ways and to synthesize different variables together.

These are such important skills in the world we live in today. Not only having the facts, but to be able to think around problems.

If we can come up with different ways of thinking about things, we’ll all get further.”

Nelson shared with us his inspiration behind the piece: “When we decide to act, we change the world in small ways, each of these actions are like ripples in a pond expanding and affecting the world beyond our perception. When put in the context of society we can use this concept, strategically to become true agents of change,” Nelson said. “Dropping that pebble into the pond of society disrupts the status quo as the ripple flows through each of us, affecting us, changing us. The more pebbles we drop in the pond with positive intention the more energy is released creating more and more potential for opportunity and change.”

Inspiring Positive Change Through Art Nelson’s efforts to use his creativity to spark dialogue is exactly what our world needs right now, said Andy Patterson, president of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“We’ve long believed that art can help inspire us, connect us and motivate us to pursue bold ideas for a better tomorrow,”

CREATING DIALOGUE THROUGH ART Patterson said. “It’s why for years, the Community Foundation has been intentional about investing in local arts organizations and it’s why we’re proud to commission a piece of original art for use in our annual report each year as a way to support a local artist.”

“Chad’s piece, ‘Agent of Change,’ speaks to the important role each of us can play in building a better, brighter future,” Patterson said. “When engaged and passionate individuals come together as one community, our collective ability to impact positive change can be so much greater. Through our lens at the Foundation, we know that philanthropy can create and accelerate that momentum. Without question, we believe unity will help us develop the best solutions for the complex problems we’re facing during this extraordinary moment in time.”

“We continued to be honored to support local artists like Chad whose work has the power to prompt important dialogue about the potential and promise before us,” Patterson said.

Finding a Calling A native of Sioux Falls, Nelson grew up in an artistic household.

His dad is skilled in fine woodworking and his mom shares her creativity through needlepoint and sewing.

“My parents definitely encouraged and valued my creativity for sure,” he said.

He found his love for art during his sophomore year at O’Gorman High School.

“It’s kind of what I put all my focus into. And the more I improved as an artist, the more I improved in other subject areas in school.

Once you get that taste for success, you’re able to apply that mode of thinking into other things.”

After focusing primarily on drawing and watercolor painting in high school, Nelson’s use of media broadened at Augustana University where he was influenced by iconic art professors Bob Aldern and Carl Grupp.

“Bob Aldern kind of took me under his wing. He helped me a lot in terms of learning how to apply my success in art to my academics. He drove the point home that, ‘You may not be interested in other subjects, but the more you know about everything, the better artist you’ll be. Your knowledge of the world will make you a better artist.’”

“Carl Grupp taught me how printmaking was the ultimate form of drawing,” Nelson said. “From there, I became really drawn to printmaking and pottery.”

After double majoring in studio art and art education, today Nelson calls himself a full time teacher and a full time artist. In addition to teaching at Brandon Valley, Nelson also teaches printmaking and art education classes at Augustana, where he’s served as the printmaker in residence for the last 14 years.

“I teach beginning through advanced art classes. I love teaching; I love being around students and watching them discover things about themselves they didn’t know before,” he said.

BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES Alliance Communications wanted to give back to local communities in their service area. They came to the Community Foundation with their idea, and we helped their Keep the Change program come to life. Today, nearly $400,000 has been awarded from this fund to help local nonprofits and causes working to build a better tomorrow.

In 2013, Alliance Communications was experiencing a symptom that comes from being a fast-growing, community-minded company.

The internet, cable TV and telephone service provider was on the move — expanding throughout portions of South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. As the company began serving more communities “we often had people approach us for donations,” said Paul VanDeBerg, head of business relations.

“As we were growing in all our communities, we were thinking of different ways we could give back. But we wanted to make it a little more systematic — more of a program rather than one person making all our charitable decisions.”

So Alliance turned to the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation for help in establishing a donor advised fund to support an idea called Keep the Change, a program through which customers’ bills are rounded up to the nearest dollar.

The difference between the billed amount and the rounded amount is pooled, deposited into their donor advised fund at the Foundation, and is used to provide grants to nonprofits throughout Alliance’s cooperative service area.

helping donors simplify and maximize their charitable giving, proved to be the perfect way to help the idea come to life, said Mary Kolsrud, the Community Foundation’s vice president for philanthropy.

The flexibility offered by a donor advised fund, combined with the Foundation’s philanthropic expertise and a shared commitment to help build stronger communities made the partnership a perfect fit.

“Partnering with Alliance Communications is another way we have been able to create meaningful change through philanthropy,” Kolsrud said. “We love the Keep the Change program, we’re grateful to Alliance for choosing us as their philanthropic partner, and most of all, we are inspired as they work to build stronger communities — for good, forever.”

VanDeBerg said 92 percent of customers choose to participate in the program and, while the average customer contribution is small — about $6 per year — collectively, the contributions add up.

“Alliance seeded the money to get the fund started but today, on average, we’re depositing $5,000 into the fund at the Community Foundation each month — those are all contributions from our customers,” he said.

BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES From there, an advisory committee comprised of Alliance customers from different communities, a member of the Alliance Board of Directors, and VanDeBerg meet each quarter to award grants from the fund.

“On average we give out about $15,000 each quarter,” he said, explaining that Keep the Change grants range from $500 to $10,000. “The great thing about this is that it’s 100 percent customer-funded. So it’s really the customer’s money doing good in their communities.”

‘The Best Decision We Made’ VanDeBerg said the Community Foundation has been key to the success of the Keep the Change program.

Businesses, individuals and families with a DONOR ADVISED FUND at the Community Foundation distributed more than $10 million to nonprofits and causes throughout our area last year.

“The best decision we made in doing all of this was partnering with the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation,” he said.

“We started looking at what’s tax deductible, what’s not tax deductible, nonprofit status, all the accounting — we knew we didn’t have the staff for all of that. The Foundation also helped guide us as we set up some of our bylaws and policies.”

Today, VanDeBerg said, the partnership works like a well-oiled machine.

After the advisory committee reviews grant applications and selects recipients, the Foundation steps in to cover the administrative work involved.

“The Foundation gets the checks ready, does all the accounting and ensures all the IRS rules are covered. So we can just focus on the fun part — and that’s giving the money out.”

Making a Difference

Other grants support efforts that contribute to the vibrancy of a community — libraries, recreational and outdoor activities, and the arts, he said.

Since the Keep the Change program launched in 2013, Alliance Communications has awarded nearly $400,000 in grants to nonprofits and causes throughout South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

“In many cases, the grants we’re able to award are some of the largest contributions these organizations receive,” VanDeBerg said.

The grants provide meaningful support to vital organizations throughout the area.

Amy Ahlers, marketing supervisor for Alliance Communications, agreed.

“A common theme through all of our towns is public safety, so we make a lot of grants to local volunteer fire departments, ambulances, those types of things,” VanDeBerg said.

“It’s been fun to see how, when just a little bit of money is pooled together, it can help organizations accomplish some really big things,” Ahlers said, pointing to a few grants as examples.

A recent grant to Bethany Meadows and Bethany Lutheran Home of Brandon helped toward the purchase of a TrioBike Taxi, a machine that enables residents to re-live the joy of riding a bike again.

Another grant helped the Baltic branch of Siouxland Libraries replace its roof after it was damaged from heavy spring rains.

And a grant to the Mighty Corson Art Players has helped ensure the continuation of community theatre for those in southeastern South Dakota.

“This all ties to a real sense of community,” VanDeBerg said.

“Again, these are customer dollars supporting the communities they call home.”

EMPOWERING LEADERS We love this community. We love it from the hustle of downtown to the hum of uptown to the endless sky and gently rolling prairie just outside the city limit signs. We love it for its limitless opportunity, for its reverence of the past, and for its optimism of the future.

Because we love this community, we believe we have a responsibility to sustain what’s good here and to champion movements and ideas that seek to make this special place even better. We envision a future where people and families feel safe, have equal access to the resources they need for their health and well-being, have opportunities to inspire and be inspired through the arts, and are encouraged to drive bold change through leadership and service.

Those aren’t lofty goals. At the surface, they may even seem common-place. Unexceptional. Easy.

Sadly, they’re anything but.

That’s because we live in a complex world with complex challenges, too few solutions, and not enough doorways to possibility.

business owners Vaney Hariri and Tamien Dysart in 2018 to help bridge a gap they saw widening throughout Sioux Falls.

Through their consultancy firm, Think 3D, the two had been working with businesses to help enhance corporate cultures through self-discovery exercises, executive coaching and development training.

What they saw was eye-opening.

“We understood that in a very short time, boomers will be leaving the workforce and millennials will be taking over. Gen Z is coming on strong. We could see the diversity in our elementary schools and what is now prevalent in our high schools. We saw all the trends and we just knew this community needed more individuals with leadership skills,” Hariri said.

Dysart added: “We knew that our highest aspiration of what our city can become, in terms of its potential, would not come about if we didn’t bridge this gap in building leaders to help lead us forward.”

And so, the idea for Leaders of Tomorrow was born.

So how do we chart a path forward? We believe it starts with leadership.

To navigate the challenges of today, and tomorrow, we believe our community needs more leaders. We’re not talking about more managers or CEOs. We’re talking about inspired and empowered individuals who represent the growing number of colors, languages, cultures, beliefs and backgrounds that exist in our community today; individuals who can come together, share perspective, build dialogue and assemble the framework Sioux Falls needs for a brighter tomorrow.

That’s why we are proud to support a program called Leaders of Tomorrow, a forward-thinking initiative designed to help inspire, shape and nurture emerging leaders by teaching intrinsic skills such as effective communication and problem solving techniques, while focusing on broader concepts such as self-awareness, selfmotivation and the power of influence.

“We are lucky to work at the intersection where philanthropy gives way to positive change,” said Patrick Gale, vice president for community investment. “Our job is to connect the dots, open doors for dialogue and inspire strategic investments to improve the quality of life for everyone who calls this community home.”

“We believe the Leaders of Tomorrow Program has the power and potential to help inspire and empower more individuals in our community to step forward and join the movement to create positive change. As we reflect on the year 2020, from the pain and uncertainty caused by the pandemic, to the divisions caused by racial injustice, we know there’s never been a more important time to invest in building engaged and impassioned leaders who can make our community even stronger,” he said.

Champions for Positive Change In 2018, Hariri and Dysart were working to get the Leaders of Tomorrow Program off the ground when they met Andy Patterson, president of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, at an event. They invited him to attend and observe a class they were teaching to one of their first small cohorts.

Patterson took them up on the offer. He stood in the back of the room, listening and learning. The dialogue was intense; the emotions were palpable. Patterson could see the impact the classes had on participants and could envision the impact graduates of the program could have on the community.

It’s a challenge that’s becoming easier thanks to the growing number of individuals who are participating in the Leaders of Tomorrow Program — the majority of whom refer or nominate people within their social and professional circles to participate in future classes.

“Now that we’re starting to get momentum, we’re starting to create a pool of talent,” Dysart said. “So when city leaders or business leaders want to include diverse members of our community on boards or in other opportunities, they have a place from which to draw talent.”

Hariri agreed.

“Our goal is to be able to say, ‘Hey, Leaders of Tomorrow graduates, there’s a board position open. Who wants to engage in this?’ And immediately, we can have a group of locked-in leaders, all of whom have some level of leadership training, be able to look at that. Our goal is to have 500 new, trained and engaged leaders by 2025. That would be huge for our community,” Hariri said.

“As a small business owner, I believe I have the power to influence my employees — not only to do good work for me, but to inspire them to further their own dreams and aspirations,” Beaudion said. “I think it’s important to elevate my community. We all want to make positive impacts within ourselves, our community, our friends and family. In order for our city to grow and develop and to be great, we have to do that.”

Eric Roberts is a graduate of one of the first Leaders of Tomorrow classes. He called the experience life-changing.

“I’d never been part of something like this before,” he said. “The program taught me to ‘lead up.’ I also learned how to make my communication more effective. I developed the courage and strength to affect others. I now have the confidence I need to make a difference.”

Roberts, 31, works as a claims adjuster for Progressive Insurance.

He said the Leaders of Tomorrow Program inspired him to take a more active role in the community.

Today, he serves on a grants committee for a field of interest fund at the Foundation that supports organizations and ideas committed to lifting up disadvantaged individuals, families and children in the Sioux Falls area.

“I’ve had a chance to learn a lot about the nonprofits in Sioux Falls,” he said. “It’s exciting to know I get to be a small part of helping support charities in our community.”

Roberts also chairs the advisory committee for the Bridging the Gap Fund, a fund held at the Community Foundation designed to help inspire, build and develop emerging leaders among the city’s diverse populations through education, community building, story-telling and leadership development.

Hariri said Roberts is an example of how investing in emerging leaders can benefit a community.

“When people finish the program, we want them to have the confidence that, number one, they can lead themselves first.

Then, through influence, they’ll have the ability to lead others in every category. No matter where they’re at in the business structure or where they’re at in the world,” he said.

As a business owner, Johnson said participating in the Leaders of Tomorrow Program “enabled me to better connect with my employees on a deeper level.”

“Leaders of Tomorrow has helped me grow not only professionally, but personally, too,” Johnson said. “I’m a single mother of three kids so I’ve learned to better manage my schedule, which in turn, makes our entire home environment better. Through this program, I’ve learned to stop, listen and understand and make the best decision. Overall, I just feel more confident.”

Del’Inkka Beaudion is the owner of Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen in downtown Sioux Falls. She heard about the Leaders of Tomorrow Program from a past participant and was excited for her chance to join the program last year.

INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS “Sioux Falls has given us so much. Now it’s time to give back.” They are longtime local business owners who, along with their family, are passionate about giving back to their community. Meet Garry and Dianne Jacobson, our 2020 Friend of the Foundation honorees.

The Friend of the Foundation Award recognizes philanthropic individuals, families or businesses whose innovative and collaborative leadership and consistent generosity have impacted the Sioux Falls area and those who call it home.

When it comes to philanthropic families, there’s perhaps no better story than that of Garry and Dianne Jacobson who have created a tradition of giving and care that connects and inspires generations of their family, while also providing vital support to nonprofits and causes throughout our community.

“Garry and Dianne are two of the most generous, yet most humble people you’ll ever meet,” said Andy Patterson, Foundation president. “Guided by their deep roots in this community and their spirit of care and concern for others, they have helped drive meaningful impact and have created positive change for individuals and families throughout our area through their charitable giving. We extend our thanks and gratitude to Garry and Dianne and we are privileged to honor them with the Friend of the Foundation Award.”

We caught up with Garry and Dianne to talk about what inspires their charitable giving, why they love Sioux Falls, and why they feel it’s so important to involve their family in philanthropy.

Living Their Dream You might say that Sioux Falls is part of Garry Jacobson’s DNA. 16 | FOR GOOD. FOR EVER.

“I’ve lived here all my life. At one point, I was probably the poorest kid in the city,” he remembered. “But we worked very hard for 50 years to build our business and we’ve been very blessed because Sioux Falls is a fabulous community to grow up in and live your dream.”

That dream, the couple said, all began in 1963 when Garry found himself sitting next to Dianne during their freshman English class at the University of South Dakota.

The couple fondly remember the class, held inside USD’s iconic Old Main, as the start to their love story. Garry, a business major,

INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS and Dianne, an accounting major, eventually married, settled in Sioux Falls and began thinking about how to make their dream of becoming entrepreneurs a reality.

Their chance came in 1971 when they purchased Malloy, a small motor repair and electric construction business originally founded in 1945 by Emmett and Mary Malloy. At the time, the business had five employees and operated out of one facility in Sioux Falls.

The couple poured their hearts and souls into the business, with Dianne running the office and overseeing the accounting and Garry managing the shops. Oftentimes, the couple would work all day, go home for dinner, then return to work with their two young daughters in tow.

“Our little four-year-old would sit and color, the baby would sleep, and we would try to get work done,” Dianne remembers.

Over the years, Garry and Dianne expanded the business to incorporate the retail sales of motors, electrical equipment and power transmission components. Today, Malloy Electric continues to be headquartered in Sioux Falls but also operates machine shops, electronic shops and motor repair shops in nine cities across the Midwest.

Dianne officially retired a few years ago, but Garry continues to work at Malloy today.

“I often say I work 40 hours a week at a job and I work 40 hours a week at a hobby. They just happen to be the same thing,” Garry said. “I think that’s the same for all entrepreneurs — their business is their hobby.”

Giving Back The couple made the decision to establish the Garry and Dianne Jacobson Family Foundation, a donor advised endowment fund held at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, in 2012.

The decision to work with the Community Foundation, he said, seemed like a natural choice.

“We came here because it’s right in Sioux Falls,” Garry said. “The Foundation runs a good ship and everyone has been so easy to work with. We’re fortunate to know a lot of people who have served, or are serving on, the board of directors and they’re all wonderful people. This is truly a community endeavor.”

After establishing their endowment fund, Dianne learned of an idea that sought to inspire philanthropy through the generations by involving children and grandchildren in philanthropic decisions.

The couple decided to put the idea into motion with their own family.

For more than a decade now, the Jacobson family has upheld a tradition where Garry and Dianne’s children, Dawn and Robin, their husbands and their four grandchildren present ideas for how best to invest their philanthropic dollars each year. Each member of the family does research prior to the gathering and, using PowerPoints, iPad technology or simply prepared remarks, they each pitch a different nonprofit or cause he or she thinks is deserving of charitable support from the Garry and Dianne Jacobson Family Foundation.

“We normally always do it on Christmas Day. We usually have Christmas dinner around 1 p.m. Then we’ll go around and open some family gifts. When we’re done with that, I always say ‘Now it’s our time to give back,’” Garry said. “So we adjourn to the family room and Dianne and I sit and listen to the kids’ presentations.”

Through this annual tradition, the family has given back to multiple local nonprofits, helping to drive meaningful change in this community. And the beauty of their family endowment held at the Community Foundation lies in future generations of the Jacobson family giving back and carrying on the family values, and providing good, for ever in Sioux Falls.

“This is the best thing we’ve ever done,” Garry said. “It’s really heartwarming to see our family come together to support our community. And someday, when we’re long gone, this foundation we’ve built —through philanthropy — will continue to be something our family comes together around.”

The Community Foundation will present the Friend of the Foundation Award to Garry and Dianne Jacobson at the 2020 Donor Reception, set for Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Washington Pavilion. The event coincides with the opening of “Agents of Change,” an exhibit featuring original artwork commissioned by the Community Foundation, as well as recent works from emerging local artists.

established a scholarship in her memory at the Community Foundation.

Today, the Ashley Elizabeth Evans Medical School Scholarship is helping to

create future physicians like Mykayla Palmer while also preserving the legacy

of a young woman who was passionate about making a difference and helping those in need.

UPHOLDING A LEGACY OF CARE Ashley Evans was in junior high school when she announced her decision to make a difference in the world.

“She was determined,” her father, Ed Evans, remembers.

“And she was always dedicated in her educational pursuits.”

After graduating from O’Gorman High School, Evans went on to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she developed an interest in medicine. As a student, she volunteered in the emergency department and in out-patient clinics for Regions Hospital in Ashley Evans St. Paul, and also served as a personal assistant for a middle school student with physical and mental disabilities.

“Scholarships are an investment in the potential and possibility of tomorrow,” said Patrick Gale, the Community Foundation’s vice president for community investment. “Our scholarship recipients are tomorrow’s doctors and nurses; tomorrow’s teachers, journalists, agribusiness owners, legal professionals, nonprofit directors. They are tomorrow’s thought-leaders and change-makers in communities throughout our area.”

“Scholarships honor the past and create opportunities for the future. We are honored we can be a small part of upholding a legacy for families like the Evans’, and to partner with those who believe in the power of education and are using this important giving tool to help create a better, brighter tomorrow,” he said.

Inspired to Serve Mykayla Palmer has always been drawn to a career in health care.

In the fall of 2000, she enrolled at the Chicago Medical School where she had the opportunity to combine her love of medicine and her passion for service. After completing her first year, she spent the summer volunteering as a member of the Mission San Lucas Toliman’s traveling medical clinic in Guatemala.

In the summer of 2003, she had just completed an internship in pediatrics at Stanford University when she was involved in a tragic car accident near Elko, Nevada. Sadly, she passed away on July 26, 2003, due to injuries sustained in the accident.

Wanting her love for education and her passion for medicine and service to live on, Ashley’s family made the decision to establish a scholarship in her name at the Community Foundation. In doing so, they have ensured her legacy will live on.

While in high school, she began shadowing area physicians to explore her interest in medicine. And as an undergraduate student at the University of South Dakota, she took a mission trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in western South Dakota where she witnessed the complexities of rural health.

“That experience really confirmed for me that I was on the right track. I learned a lot about the rural health system there and the challenges that exist,” Palmer, a graduate of Brandon Valley High School, said.

The visit to Pine Ridge held personal significance for Palmer as well — her mother was born a Braveheart of the Oglala Lakota Tribe in Pine Ridge and was later adopted as a young child.

“I’ve always felt called to go back there — to heal and help people there,” Palmer said.

Investing in Tomorrow Today, the Community Foundation holds more than $12 million

Eventually, Palmer made the decision to pursue medical school, however, her plans were nearly derailed when she was involved in a car accident on the way to sit for her Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

While stopped in her car on a freeway due to construction, a distracted driver traveling at 80 miles per hour rear-ended her vehicle. Palmer suffered neck, back and shoulder injuries and was forced to delay her MCAT.

UPHOLDING A LEGACY OF CARE

The delay didn’t stop her. She eventually sat for the exam and was admitted to the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. A short time later, Palmer applied for and was awarded the Ashley Elizabeth Evans Medical School Scholarship held at the Community Foundation.

She immediately felt a sense of gratitude — not only for the award, but for her connection to Ashley’s legacy.

“This has been so meaningful to me because I feel like I got a second chance to go to medical school, but Ashley did not. It’s heartwarming to know I get to continue that legacy,” Palmer said.

“I’ve been very thankful. It was hard to find many scholarships for medical school. And because of my clinical commitments I’m not able to work during medical school — this scholarship will help with that financial burden.”

Receiving the award has also inspired her to work toward opening doors for others.

“I would love to give back in the future when I have the ability to create a scholarship fund for students,” she said. “I think this scholarship really opened a door into medicine for me that may not have been possible without it.”

A Commitment to Rural Medicine In July, Palmer officially began her second year of medical school. She’s planning to specialize in family medicine with a goal to remain in South Dakota after she completes her training.

“I’ve had the chance to shadow family medicine doctors here in Vermillion and my favorite thing to witness is how they can walk in and know every patient and their families. They’re able to really connect with their patients,” she said. “When you’re a doctor, I think really knowing your patients — knowing their histories and their needs — helps you care for them in the best way possible.”

“I always say that ‘as doctors we are the masters of science, but the patient is the master of their body.’ I really think one of the most important things in medicine is having a listening ear — it’s the best way to get to the bottom of the problem itself,” she said.

Recently, Palmer was selected to participate in the Frontier and Rural Medicine Program (FARM), a selective program that offers med students the chance to receive nine months of clinical training in a rural community.

This spring, she’ll move to Winner, South Dakota, where she’ll gain hands-on experience working in both clinical and hospital settings, serving patients of all ages.

“I love bringing comfort to people. If I can be a light in someone’s day by providing emotional, social or physical support, that’s really rewarding for me,” she said.

STRENGTHENING OUR HOMETOWNS

A legacy gift to the Lennox Area Community Fund, an affiliate of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, celebrates the love we all have for our hometowns.

Those who knew her remember Annabeth Arne as a quiet person who loved her family and treasured her favorite hobbies, including reading, gardening and canning.

Born in Lennox in 1943, Annabeth attended rural schools in Turner County and worked as an elementary school teacher before starting a family with her husband, Donald. Throughout their married life they made their home in Clark and rural Carpenter.

Although she hadn’t lived in Lennox since she was a child, it was clear Annabeth’s hometown held a special place in her heart.

After her recent passing at age 76, a portion of Annabeth’s estate was directed to the Lennox Area Community Fund.

The five-figure gift was one of the largest in Lennox’s history — an act of generosity and love that will help ensure this cherished hometown will continue to thrive — for good, forever.

The Lennox Area Community Fund is an affiliate of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. It was established in 2004 to help improve the quality of life for those who call the communities of Lennox, Chancellor and Worthing home.

Gifts to the Lennox Area Community Fund have grown over time thanks to the benefit of a pooled investment that generates long-term asset growth. Through the power of endowment, more than $100,000 has been granted to nonprofits and causes throughout Lennox, Chancellor and Worthing — enhancing the vibrancy of these quaint, tightly-knit communities.

Jonathan Hagena serves as president for the Lennox Area Community Fund’s Board of Directors. He called the estate gift “a gift that keeps on giving.”

“A legacy gift like this will benefit our community for a long time — this is a gift that keeps on giving. In a time when the economy is tough and people have less money for their own expenditures, it’s an especially meaningful boost. I think this also plants a seed for others who maybe wouldn’t have considered us for an estate gift,” he said.

Like all legacy gifts, Annabeth’s gift is so much more than just a donation, it is a reflection of who she was and what was important to her, said Mary Kolsrud, vice president for philanthropy.

“When someone shares their legacy, they’re sharing their story, a reflection of who they are, the values that have shaped them and their hopes and dreams for the future,” Kolsrud said. “Planning today to give tomorrow through a bequest is more than just a transfer of wealth after your lifetime, it’s an opportunity to celebrate your passions and leave a lasting legacy of care that will help strengthen a community, a cause or a nonprofit you care deeply about.”

Alan Rops, a member of the Lennox Area Community Fund’s Board of Directors, agreed. “People feel connected to the place they were born. This gift tells us so much about who Annabeth was and what she felt about this place. It’s been a tough year for a lot of people, so to have a donation like this is a real boost for our community,” Rops said.

INNOVATING THROUGH UNCERTAINTY As the first wave of the pandemic swept across the U.S. last spring, thousands of churches nationwide grappled with how to keep their congregations safe while also nurturing the spiritual needs of their parishioners during a time of unprecedented uncertainty and painful loss.

Many made the difficult decision to pause in-person worship services and instead shared sermons, devotions and prayers online via social media. Others saw weekly in-person attendance decline and proactively began to publish content online for those who didn’t feel comfortable leaving their homes.

Endowment funds are invested to provide returns which replenish the dollars distributed to charity each year, ensuring they are “forever funds,” said Mary Kolsrud, vice president for philanthropy.

“In the case of the Hour of Hope Endowment, an advisory board awards grants from the fund to local churches to help advance their media ministry efforts. Those grants have been especially meaningful to churches during this moment in time, when so many are balancing the need to keep their congregations safe with the need to remain connected in sharing the faith,” Kolsrud said.

Continuing a Mission The Hour of Hope Endowment takes its name from the Hour of Hope radio show, a ministry program that first began in the mid1950s and, at its height, aired on more than six radio stations in more than 13 states throughout the U.S. David Brunkow was a member of the program’s board of the directors.

“The program was Lutheran in its foundation and provided sacred music and preaching,” Brunkow said. “The most recent pastor for Hour of Hope was based in Brookings, South Dakota.

He produced the entire broadcast. But, he was growing older and expressed a desire to retire. So, we started thinking about what was next. We wanted to continue reaching those for whom the radio show was originally created — those who wish to have their faith nourished, but are either unable or choose not to participate in regular congregation worship activities.”

After the Hour of Hope’s final radio broadcast in April 2017, the program’s board of directors made the decision to place its assets into an endowment at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

“Little did we know how vital media ministry would come to be — certainly it has been critical during this time to be able to engage with people,” Brunkow said.

The Power of Endowment Today, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation holds more than 700 endowments valued at more than $150 million.

“With the mobility of people today and varied schedules — life has changed so much,” Sorenson said. “People travel for work on a regular basis and jobs aren’t just 8-5 Monday through Friday anymore. All that means that regular church attendance has changed.”

The grant from the Hour of Hope Endowment helped Grace Lutheran purchase new equipment to enhance its livestreamed service.

Looking Ahead

“We purchased a camera and tripod that we could hook into our soundboard. We also bought a small computer that would run the camera and connect in to Facebook Live. It’s really made a difference in the quality of what we are doing. When our members watch the worship service on Facebook, they can make comments and greet each other — they stay connected.

We’ve had many people tell us that the ability to follow along and engage on Facebook made them feel like they were still part of church, even though they were still in their homes.”

Moving forward, Brunkow hopes the Hour of Hope Endowment will grow so that even more churches can benefit from its grants, “making it possible for churches to touch more lives,” he said.

“These grants are seed money for churches who are ready to take the next step in their media ministry efforts. These grants give congregations the courage to take the first step toward meeting the challenge in front of them.”

Kevin Jensen serves as the senior pastor for two churches — Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester, South Dakota, and Hudson Lutheran Church, located just west of where the Big Sioux River separates South Dakota and Iowa.

Both churches have received grants from the Hour of Hope Endowment.

One church used the grant to purchase SlingStudio, a portable and wireless multi-camera broadcasting platform that allows church staff to broadcast worship services live on YouTube.

Another church used the grant to purchase an FM radio transmitter that helped church-goers tune in to worship services earlier this summer when services were held outside.

PAVING THE WAY TO POSSIBILITY Thanks to a lead grant from the Community Foundation, a new program is helping high school juniors and seniors chart a course to success through exposure to different career opportunities and access to post-secondary education, while also addressing the city’s workforce needs.

For most kids, senior year is about making memories while celebrating the last iconic moments of high school — the last football game, the last school dance, the last lunch in the school cafeteria.

But not for Elda Aquino Ortega.

Ortega, a senior at New Tech High School in Sioux Falls, is planning to make her senior year a year of firsts.

Over the next nine months, Ortega, a native of Guatemala, will spend time touring and learning about local businesses, connecting with business leaders, building hands-on experience, and earning college credit as one of approximately 40 high school juniors and seniors who are participating in the Career Connections Program, a new initiative designed to help address the city’s workforce challenges by offering high school juniors and seniors early career exposure, job shadowing opportunities and access to post-secondary curriculum.

“This is an opportunity for me to get some great career experience,” Ortega said. “I’m excited.”

A grant from the Community Foundation made it possible for the Career Connections Program to launch.

It’s a grant that Community Foundation President Andy Patterson calls “an investment in the future of Sioux Falls.”

“We’re proud to partner with local leaders and businesses in support of the Career Connections Program because we believe that in order to build a better, stronger and more vibrant community, we need to invest in efforts to help inspire and develop the next generation of thought-leaders and changemakers,” Patterson said. “We believe this program will do just that, while also helping to address our city’s workforce development challenges.”

PAVING THE WAY TO POSSIBILITY Developed by the Sioux Falls Development Foundation and endorsed by the Forward Sioux Falls Strategic Workforce Action Agenda, the Career Connections Program officially launched this fall.

Approximately 40 students who are first-generation Americans or are low income make up the program’s inaugural class.

Denise Guzzetta, vice president of talent and workforce development for the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, called the grant a game-changer.

“Without this grant from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, the Career Connections Program would not have been possible,” she said. “We are so appreciative of the Community Foundation’s support, and we’re grateful for their belief in workforce development, in education and in the need to invest in building a better tomorrow.”

Dave Rozenboom is president of First PREMIER Bank, one of a number of businesses who are participating in the program.

Rozenboom said the Community Foundation “grasped on to the vision for the Career Connections Program right from the start.”

“Funding for new programs and initiatives can be a major hurdle, but the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation immediately went to work to remove the financial barrier for this pilot program and allowed the Sioux Falls Development Foundation to focus their time and efforts on designing a model with area high schools that could effectively and efficiently bring students and employers together. Another wonderful example of how well we all work together to make our community a stronger and more vibrant place to call home, for everyone,” he said.

Hands-On Experience, Professional Connections Guzzetta said the idea behind the program is to help students determine their best pathway into the workforce.

“Among those who graduate each year from Sioux Falls public schools, approximately 600 do not pursue any form of postsecondary education,” Guzzetta said. “We want to reduce this number. We think this program will provide good opportunities for kids in Sioux Falls, while also addressing our city’s growing and changing workforce needs.”

For Ortega, her dreams include becoming a teacher, or possibly a principal, someday.

Since moving to Sioux Falls at age 12, she’s been motivated to make her dream a reality. She’s worked hard in school and, during her freshman year, she decided to apply for a hostess job at Olive Garden.

“I didn’t know anything about how to act in an interview or what things to say, so I asked my teachers to help coach me,” Ortega said.

The coaching helped. Ortega landed the job and still works at Olive Garden today.

That same kind of professional coaching, mentoring and handson experience are all things Ortega is hoping to take away from the Career Connections Program.

Professional Experience, Access to Education Career Connections is a multi-faceted endeavor.

CREATING POSSIBILITY The grant for the Career Connections Program was made possible thanks in part to our Community Fund, the Foundation’s most visionary endowment.

Thanks to the Community Fund, in fiscal year 2019-20 we awarded more than $500,000 in grants to support local nonprofits and new ideas designed to make our community stronger. Read more about other community grants at sfacf.org.

One aspect of the program helps students create professional connections, gain hands-on experience and build intangible skills — effective communication, time management, information analysis and more — by spending time at local businesses who have signed on to partner in the initiative.

Students will spend the fall semester meeting with leadership teams from each participating business and touring facilities to help discern where their vocational interests lie and what industries they’re most drawn to.

In the spring, students will spend time each week in the business/industry they’re most interested in.

Another aspect of the program provides assistance to help students pursue some form of post-secondary education, such as a certificate program, a technical degree, or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from a school within the South Dakota Board of Regents’ system.

Participants will attend classes at their home high school and at CTE Academy, USD Community College for Sioux Falls or Southeast Tech. They’ll also begin concurrent or dual-credit coursework free of charge at these institutions while completing their high school diploma within the Sioux Falls School District.

The program also offers financial assistance to cover tuition, books and fees at USD Community College for Sioux Falls or Southeast Tech while in high school.

Students, employers and the city of Sioux Falls will all advance from the Career Connections Program, Rozenboom said.

“I believe these students will benefit in many ways, including multi-industry exposure with several great companies, as well as through the dual credit component of the Career Connections program where they will earn credits toward their post-secondary education and gain confidence in their ability to reach their goals. We will benefit by sharing our story with these students and hopefully increase their interest in pursuing a career in financial services with our organization,” he said. “The Career Connections program makes it easy for our company to participate because of the efficient model that the Sioux Falls Development Foundation has put in place with area high schools to bring students and companies together.”

Ortega sees the post-secondary education element of the program as particularly valuable. This year, she’ll earn college credit for two classes she’ll be taking at Southeast Tech. She plans to transfer those credits to the University of South Dakota where next fall, she plans to begin pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education.

RESPONDING TO OUR COMMUNITY’S NEEDS The coronavirus pandemic has impacted our community in unprecedented ways. Adapting, innovating and collaborating, the Foundation mounted an unprecedented response — stepping forward to help when our community needed us the most.

Working with the City of Sioux Falls, we launched the One Sioux Falls Fund to help our neighbors in Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner and McCook Counties impacted by COVID-19.

Thanks to support from area businesses, individuals and families, we raised more than $3.3 million, helping more than 2,900 individuals and families who were unable to work due to COVID-19 remain housed.

Pivoting from our traditional grantmaking, we deployed our Community Fund to award more than 30 emergency grants to front-line nonprofits hardest hit by the pandemic. We also worked with donor advisors interested in directing grants from donor advised funds to support local nonprofits with the greatest need.

Working with a coalition of local churches, we helped launch the Corona Help Sioux Falls Fund, an initiative designed to provide basic necessities to those impacted by COVID-19.
