A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Advancing Our Mission As your incoming Chair, let’s talk about our past, present, and most importantly, future.

In this important role, I am grateful to each of the previous Chairs of the Foundation. Each Chair has left both their fingerprints and footprints on your organization, each one dedicated to leaving Scott Christensen the Foundation better than when they assumed their leadership role. It will be my responsibility to fulfill that commitment and ensure I hand off a stronger, bigger, and better organization in 2020, just as Tom McDowell, the outgoing Chair, has done for me.

In viewing the present, your Foundation is solid and strong. Because of excellent Board members like Martha Carlson, who just concluded her service, and the leadership of President Andy Patterson and his highly qualified team, we are properly positioned to do great things in and for our community.

That takes me to the future. It is indeed bright, very bright. I am excited to introduce our two new Board members, Amange Aware and Sarah Madison. They bring an exciting and important perspective to our Board and I am looking forward to working with them. Together with Andy and his team, we are laying out a series of aggressive goals concentrated on taking your Foundation to new levels. Our drive to success will allow us to focus on helping you continue to make our community a great place to call home.

Grants Invest in Community…With Heart S U P P O RT I N G DON ORS’ CH A RITABLE DREAMS Getting to the heart of what gives the Sioux Falls area its positive energy is pretty straightforward: it’s the people and the passion they have for doing good.

For the Community Foundation, that commitment shows in the grant-making activity of our donor advisors. Because of their generosity the cumulative outflow of grants from the Community Foundation has surpassed $150 million, with more than $11 million being distributed during FY 2018. “That’s an amazing amount of money to support community improvements,” says President Andy Patterson. “So many organizations and causes benefit from their kindness — from the arts to the zoo and everything in between. It’s fascinating to learn about the causes donors support.”

“Lynne and I both believe in local philanthropy,” says donor advisor Bill Byrne. “Helping various great causes in our community gives us joy and the Foundation is always helpful about alerting us to new projects we may want to consider. The Community Foundation adds great value to our giving, in part by taking any

hassle out of the process. We began our fund 14 years ago and they are on top of it. Among other benefits, the Foundation serves as an efficient and easy-tomanage administrative funnel through which Lynne and I flow our giving.”

“We’re honored when donors turn to us for information about charities or strategies for giving,” says Patterson. “Our goal is to help them get the most from their charitable investment and enjoy the satisfaction of giving.”

Grants from the Foundation’s Community Fund add further value to the work of area nonprofits. Thanks to proceeds from the Foundation’s annual City Blossom event, the Foundation awards more than $300,000 annually through its competitive grant-making process.

Patterson says, “City Blossom donors understand that their gifts turn into grants that make life better throughout our region. We are grateful that they trust us to make thoughtful grants that reflect our ‘for good, for ever’ mission.”

Members of the AAUW work closely with PEO Chapters to review scholarship applications and assure that donors’ dreams of helping young people are fulfilled.

Scholarship Reviewers Assure Donors’ Legacies VO L U NTE E RS GIV E TIM E A N D EXPERT IS E Making sure the vision of the founding donor is being honored, Community Foundation scholarship volunteers spend countless hours reviewing more than 1,200 applications submitted by bright students who are pursuing post-secondary education.

When establishing a scholarship fund, the Community Foundation works with the donor to identify the type of student they wish to support, clarify criteria, and develop an objective process for evaluating applicants.

With more than 90 scholarship opportunities, the Foundation is grateful to the dozens of community volunteers and high school faculty who give their time and expertise to the process. Much of the review work is done by members from two PEO chapters and from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). “We simply couldn’t run our scholarship program without them,” says Program Officer Patrick Gale. “These are dedicated folks who are passionate about education and love to help young people get started with a little boost. Several of the volunteers

spent their working years teaching in the classroom so their experience is key to the evaluation process.”

Teamwork is the name of the game for the review process. Applications are first screened by PEO volunteers. Evaluators carefully score various aspects of each submission, including the student’s activities, teacher recommendations, essay responses, and financial need. Only those applications with the highest scores advance for final selection by AAUW volunteers.

“Our volunteers know how important these scholarships are to the donor that started them and how much time and effort students put into their applications,” Gale notes. “They do their utmost to give each student a fair shake and to honor the donor’s dream of helping young people.”

Tony Bour expresses appreciation to the heroes who serve and protect the people of South Dakota.

Showing Appreciation for Those Who Serve

Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra connects local students to Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute Link Up program. Using a hands-on music curriculum, Sioux Falls area fourth graders learn to play recorders with the experience culminating in a final concert at the Washington Pavilion with the SDSO.

Each day South Dakota police, firefighters, first responders, and those who serve in the military, put their lives on the line keeping us safe in a world that is too often uncertain. Their example inspired former Showplace Wood Products CEO Tony Bour to start South Dakota Salutes to show appreciation to these men and women, and when necessary, to financially support the families of those who make the ultimate sacrifice.

“These folks are the best, the finest,” Bour shares, “and it’s important they know how grateful we are for their service. Our group had a good idea and working with the Community Foundation helped us get started. This year will be the third annual shooting competition at Hunter’s Pointe in Humboldt.” The event is a day of recreation and appreciation. On top of free range time, food and beverages are provided, and trophies are handed out to the top teams and individuals.

South Dakota Salutes began at the Community Foundation in 2016 and is now a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to say “thank you” and support those who serve and protect the citizens of South Dakota.

Being a good listener is a skill that has served Program Officer Patrick Gale well for his thirteen years at the Community Foundation. “In visiting with donor advisors, I learn their stories and the causes that matter to them. And when a nonprofit approaches us with a need and I know of a donor who shares that passion, I can reach out and connect the giver and the receiver.” For example, he was able to connect a donor with an interest in health services to an initiative of Falls Community Health. “Whether they are givers or receivers, they are people with a deep commitment to doing good and making our part of the world better for everyone.”

As coordinator for the Grants Committee that reviews competitive applications for Community Fund grants, Gale keeps up with the local nonprofit sector. “I try to inform Committee members of trends, new programs, and give them the resources they need to do their evaluations. It’s a process that works well because our volunteers do a thorough job of reading the requests and giving thought to the needs of the community.”

“I am inspired every day by both the philanthropy of our donors and by the passion of the nonprofit organizations in our community,” Gale says. “It’s truly a privilege to do this work.”
