GUIDE PRICE

£4,000,000

A magnificent indoor pool, sauna and gym combine with beautifully proportioned reception rooms and a study, while outside there’s a tennis court, triple garaging and picturesque vistas of the fields beyond.

Built in 1919, Burdenshot House retains many original features, whilst having been impeccably styled and appointed for 21st century life. Located within a rarely available private road, a short stroll from the mainline station, which will take you into Waterloo in 32 minutes, the property offers convenience within a truly exceptional measure of seclusion. Neighbouring fields to both the front and rear of the property further enhance the rural feel and provide the perfect backdrop to life in this private enclave.

With its hung tiles, statuesque chimney stacks and leaded windows, a refined double-fronted façade leads into the central entrance hall. Original features such as exposed beams combine with extensive glazing and contemporary design to generate a sense of elegance and understated luxury.

Bay windows bathe the dining room in sunlight, whilst French doors tempt you to enjoy al fresco entertaining, but with the fall-back of working fireplaces to add atmosphere during those chillier days.

On the ground floor, reception rooms and study all offer stunning views, the fluidity of their layout providing a hugely sociable and free-flowing feel.

With the hex weave patterns of the wood floor underfoot, a spacious, sun-filled drawing room leads through to a splendid conservatory inviting you to step out into the gardens at every opportunity. An expanse of sliding doors allows the terracing outside to play an integral part in daily life. An arched picture window and part-vaulted ceiling enhance height and space, with a gold column radiator adding a delightful pop of colour. Equally impressive, the interconnecting living and dining rooms echo the pared-back aesthetic. Versatile to your needs, the generously fitted study offers a peaceful retreat, again with French doors leading onto the terracing outside.

Classically elegant, an extensive kitchen/ breakfast room with a central island is well-appointed with a wealth of traditional cabinetry topped with sleek black granite. Integrated appliances are tucked away out of sight whilst a range cooker sits beneath a mantel extractor. An adjacent utility room with ample storage, houses laundry appliances and has a secret staircase to the first floor as well as its own driveway access

An inner hallway leads from the living room to a leisure block offering a range of superb fitness and leisure facilities. A double aspect pool hall with vaulted ceiling and extending to some 50ft x 30ft houses a magnificent swimming pool which is complemented by a sauna, gym and a suite of changing rooms. A succession of sliding doors enable the gardens to effortlessly serve as an extension to the paved surround.

A duo of discreetly positioned cloakrooms at either end of the house completes the ground floor accommodation.

With natural light filtering in from double height windows, a solid wood turning staircase leads the way up to the first floor where seven double bedrooms provide an abundance of flexible accommodation for family and guests. Each one has enchanting outlooks of the surrounding landscape and ample storage. The principal bedroom opens into a fitted dressing room and an en-suite wetroom arranged in a marble tile setting and finished with twin waterfall shower heads. Ideal perhaps for teenagers or guests, a further bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and fitted dressing area of its own, while together the others share a lavish family bathroom with walk-in shower and a freestanding egg shell bath illuminated by contemporary hanging and spot lighting. An additional, separate modern shower room provides additional convenience if needed for large, busy households.

With an expanse of French and sliding doors, the ground floor of Burdenshot House sits in harmony with blissfully secluded gardens. To both front and back, the spacious grounds adjoin fields which are jointly owned by the residents of the private road, allowing your gaze to wander uninterrupted into the distance and making it easy to escape from the hubbub of the world.

Explore further and you’ll discover a cinema room that retains the flexibility to be tailored to your own needs and a gym that has its own dedicated access to a deluxe shower room, the indoor pool and plant room.

Tastefully understated in its luxury yet utterly seductive in its design, it effortlessly blends the charm of its original architecture with the finer detailing of energy efficiency and security.

A utility room and cloakroom complete the ground floor and it’s good to note that the swimming pool was installed by the renowned Compass Pools with climate control, a low energy consumption rate backed up by a boiler. The auto clean function uses a minimum amount of effort on your behalf to maintain it and the current owners regularly service it on an annual basis.

Bathed in light the central turning staircase and galleried landings lead the way to the equally accomplished upper two storeys where a choice of six double bedroom suites provide a cherished level of family accommodation.

FACING THE FUTURE

QI favourite Alan Davies is heading to Surrey for a very special stand-up tour

It’s been 10 long years since actor, panel show stalwart and comedian Alan Davies last embarked on a nationwide stand-up tour.

But now he is back with his new show Think Ahead, which comes to Guildford’s G Live (trafalgartickets.com) and the New Victoria Theatre in Woking (atgtickets.com) this autumn.

Alan is a supremely likeable stand-up, who has a marvellous way with an anecdote and an infectious, magnetic stage presence. Seeing him live is always an electrifying experience.

And you will no doubt be very pleased to hear that Alan is as charming, charismatic and funny off stage as he is on it.

Chatting in the run-up to the tour, the comedian begins by explaining why it has been a full decade since he last toured.

“I didn’t really realise quite how long had gone by. You can get a bit caught out by time.”

However, Alan reveals: “I’ve been keeping my hand in and been gigging every now and then. I found I started to get some ideas for some new stuff. And I also realised just how much I like being on stage.”

The comedian, who has also enjoyed an immensely successful TV career with highly popular shows such as QI, Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, Taskmaster and Jonathan Creek, goes on to outline what he loves most about live performing.

“It’s like getting on a motorbike or a skateboard or skis or a surfboard. If you can do it, then why wouldn’t you? Having spent so many years developing the skills, it seems a shame if they’re not then used.”

“I’m not restricted. I’m not like a cricketer, where you get to a certain age and you just can’t run between the wickets any more or your reflexes go. All I have to do is hold a microphone. And I don’t even need to do that now. I can just strap it on my head!”

The stand-up has always had a superb rapport with his live audience, and he is really looking forward to reconnecting with his Surrey fans.

“It’s really exciting,” Alan beams. “The reason why touring is so appealing is because I like going to a new town every night and talking to the audience about it.

“I enjoy finding out which is a nice bit, which is the worst bit, which town they hate. They’re always very vocal about which town they hate. Everyone’s got very, very strong opinions about their own neighbourhood, and it’s good to tap into those.”

Alan’s material strikes such a chord with audiences because it’s all about shared experiences. “My principal obsession on stage is myself and where I am in life. I am 58 now. I’ve got teenage children and various physical impairments, and so do my audience.”

“I’ve always found that when I’m on stage, if I just talk about my life, then people in the audience have the same life, they live in the same places, they see the same things, and they have the same life experience.”

The great thing is, Alan always manages to make the experiences we all have in common hilariously funny. He discusses, for instance, the difficulties of raising children and how he is subjected to continual eye-rolling from his offspring.

“My nine-year-old, especially, just thinks I’m ridiculous, an absolute idiot. Just half an hour ago, he was alerting my wife to the terrible state of the toast I’d made for breakfast,” he laughs.

The comedian is equally sharp on the subject of ageing: “We’re all getting older together. You’re either getting ill, or your friends are dying, or your parents are dying, or your children are getting older and won’t listen to anything you say. There’s a general feeling that when you’re in your 50s nothing is meant for you. In fact, people treat you as if you’re 98!”

The show is clearly going to be very relatable. What does Alan hope audiences will take away from it?

“I’m not going to go on as long as I did on the last tour. Definitely, that was much too long. This is going to be an appropriate length for people with prostate issues! So you will be comfortable, provided with some amusing anecdotes, and you’ll be home well before 11!”

THE ART OF HOME

Shere Madness is one of Surrey’s foremost interior design studios. Founded by Charlotte Drinkall, the award-winning company has overseen some of the most sumptuous transformations, covering everything from cosy cottages to town houses.

Charlotte began her interiors career at the BBC working with makeover royalty Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen before joining Spice Girl guru Simon Fuller’s 19 group as a project manager overseeing star-studded events.

Moving into more commercial installations - one of which was the impressive Olympic Rings which adorned Tower Bridge during London 2012, she then returned to interiors where she worked on the properties of some of TV’s biggest names, which reads like a roll call of morning television presenters.

Following a move to Guildford, Charlotte decided to go it alone with her first job being her own home.

“We did that and then my neighbour came round and said, ‘I love your house, can you do the same to mine?’.

“Well that was the easiest brief in the world, so I took it on. That project actually won a number of competitions, which got me into a few magazines and Shere Madness has been going ever since.”

While some clients require just a selection of rooms or a floor, for Charlotte the most satisfying way to work is to be given free rein across an entire house.

“I love it when clients move out and we can just really get to work,” she says. “We totally transform their home so that when they come back, they open the door and it’s just ‘Wow’! They get all the gain with none of the pain.”

Charlotte says to her interior design is much more than cushions, colours and curtains.

“It’s really important that I am on board from the very beginning, so we can make sure we get the layout absolutely right for the client and their family. That way, I can make sure everything works perfectly – all the light fittings are in the right place, all the door hinges open in the right direction and so on.

“The whole project works better if I am the first one in and the last one out. I like to be the one who fluffs that last cushion and closes the door.”

So where does the process begin?

“Clients often approach me saying they have no idea what they like. But this isn’t often true as they are usually very clear on what they don’t like,” she explains.

“I start by giving them a bit of homework and ask them about their favourite restaurants or hotels. I will also look in their wardrobe and see what colours of clothes they like to wear. If they have a lot of vibrant colours then you can see they may prefer bolder designs, but if it’s full of creams, camel or black and white, then you can see that person would prefer a pared-back colour palette.”

Charlotte says collaboration is key. She creates a look and feel document for each client which is then followed by a mood board. This ensures, Charlotte says, that the style direction is heading the right way from the outset.

“It is their house, not mine… so it is worth putting the work in at the planning stage” They have to feel comfortable and they must really love it so it is worth doing a bit more discussion at the outset.”

Period properties are a particular favourite of Charlotte’s and while she is happy to modernise and add state-of-the-art features, she does like to ‘retain the bones’ of the style in which it was built.

“It is all about getting architectural details right. Shouldn’t fight with a building, they should complement it.”

In terms of styling, Charlotte says simple or seasonal upgrades can be achieved by swapping items that are easy to change - cushions, colours, artworks, lights and so on.

“Something that is very big at the moment is wall panelling, but you have to be careful that it is truly right for the building. If you are going to look at it in a couple of years and think it looks a bit dated, that’s a really difficult thing to undo and it’s going to make a right mess of the walls too.”

Charlotte’s advice instead is to draw on your surroundings for inspiration.

“I went to a lovely restaurant recently where they had lacquered their walls in deep reds and turquoises and it was fantastic. You would probably not want to live with it but I will take elements of that and bring it into a design.”

“If I see a house or room I like on a particular programme I will take a picture of the TV and file it away for future reference.“

“Pinterest and Instagram are other great sources - you can take ideas from so many sources.”

AUTUMN THOUGHTS

“It is quite easy to go quite kitsch, quite quickly, adding pumpkins and witch’s hats everywhere,” she warns.

“Instead you could add a few throws and cushions in those kind of rusty, earthy tones - browns, olives and mustards that are associated with autumn.

“The other thing to think about is the smell. Quite often I will change candles in a house depending on what time of year it is. Summer and spring tend to have fresh, light floral scents and then as you go into autumn and winter, I will put things like tobacco/charcoal scents. They are heavier, but they bring a cosier atmosphere.

“Fresh foliage and flowers also bring the season indoors; if you are using items you have foraged, you will naturally give your home seasonality.”

Prestige Homes Magazine goes behind the scenes at the Surrey Artist of the Year competition

Art is a powerful medium for expression, reflection, and transformation, and the Surrey Artist of the Year (SAOTY) competition stands as a shining beacon for creativity in the region. This prestigious annual event has grown to become one of the most highly anticipated art competitions in Surrey, offering both emerging and established artists a platform to showcase their work and gain invaluable exposure.

A Platform for Artistic Excellence

Taking place at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham, the Surrey Artist of the Year competition has established itself as a key event in the county’s cultural calendar. Each year, it invites artists of all backgrounds and skill levels to submit their work, creating an inclusive space where different media and artistic styles can shine. Whether an artist specialises in painting, sculpture, photography, or digital art, the competition provides a unique opportunity to be recognised and celebrated for their craft.

While the competition itself is open to artists from across the county, it also offers a sense of community and belonging, with participants often networking with one another, sharing techniques, and collaborating on projects. It’s not just about competing - it’s about creating a lasting impact on the local art scene.

Submission and Judging Process

Artists interested in competing typically submit a portfolio or a selected piece of their work, often aligning with a specific theme or prompt for that year’s competition. Submissions are evaluated by a panel of expert judges, including curators, gallery owners and artists. The judging criteria are broad, encompassing creativity, originality, technical execution, and the emotional impact of the artwork.

Gallery director and SAOTY lead Dr Outi Remes says the competition and the New Ashgate are committed to supporting both established and emerging artists.

“Since 2009, the award has shone a light on the remarkable talent across the county, bringing artists to new audiences and strengthening Surrey’s reputation as a place where creativity thrives,” says Dr Remes.

“The competition is more than an exhibition: it gives the public a voice through two rounds of voting, offers artists professional recognition, and provides the winner with a bursary and a solo show at New Ashgate Gallery. It is a celebration of community, diversity, and the value of contemporary art in our everyday lives.”

The Impact on Surrey’s Art Scene

While winning the Surrey Artist of the Year competition is undoubtedly a career-defining moment, the competition’s wider impact on the local art scene is even more significant. It not only raises the profile of the participating artists but also enriches the cultural landscape of Surrey. The annual exhibition of finalists’ works allows the public to engage with contemporary art in a meaningful way, helping foster a deeper appreciation for the arts in the community.

In addition, the competition plays an important role in supporting the growth of local art institutions and galleries. Many of Surrey’s leading art venues, such as the Woking Art Gallery and Guildford House Gallery, have hosted SAOTY exhibitions over the years, further cementing the competition’s position as a cornerstone of the county’s vibrant arts culture.

A Launchpad for Emerging Talent

For many artists, entering the Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a stepping stone to larger opportunities. Previous finalists have gone on to exhibit their work internationally, receive public commissions, and enjoy the kind of exposure that is often difficult to achieve without the platform that SAOTY provides. Whether an artist is just starting their career or is an established figure looking for fresh exposure, the competition serves as a powerful launchpad for new opportunities.

MEET THE SURREY ARTIST OF THE YEAR ROSALINDA KIGHTLEY

Rosalinda studied Graphic Design at Kingston College of Art in the early eighties, then spent the following few years in London and Surrey working as a book designer and illustrator.

However, more recently she has concentrated on painting, working mainly in acrylics on board, canvas or paper - as she says, ‘different surfaces lending themselves to different moods and subjects’.

Rosalinda says the natural world provides much of her inspiration, using the gardens, paths and lanes of Surrey to explore colour, tone and shape.

Speaking about her win, Rosalinda said: “I feel hugely privileged to be chosen as the Surrey Artist of the Year 2024. Thank you to the New Ashgate Gallery and to all those who voted for me.”

Silent Pool Gin is one of Surrey’s most famous exports, here we take a dip into what sets it apart

The story begins

Silent Pool Gin captures the very essence of the Surrey Hills where it is distilled. It is a gin of uncompromising quality, aromatic and bursting with complex flavours, and housed in a beautiful teal and copper bottle with a distinctive glass stopper.

The Silent Pool Gin story began back in 2014 when a group of local friends set out to create a gin distillery adjacent to the Silent Pool, deep in the Surrey Hills National Landscape.

They converted neighbouring farm buildings into a working distillery with a restored vintage wood-fired steam boiler powering a handbuilt copper still.

They then sourced local ingredients and exotic botanicals and set about experimenting with all kinds of recipes, refusing to compromise on quality. Finally they created a gin of rare taste and beauty and named it Silent Pool Gin, after its home.

Immediately popular with local customers, Silent Pool Gin soon acquired a raft of awards and, a decade later, has amassed an enviable reputation across the world.

Visit the Silent Pool Gin Distillery

Visit the Silent Pool Distillery in Surrey and take a deep dive into the world of Silent Pool Gin.
