GREAT IDEAS IN ARTS EDUCATION START HERE!

“Thank you so much for your amazing play and educational program. I have never been to an excursion that was so moving and meaningful.” Georgia Downes - Mount Annan Christian College of subject areas, beyond the traditional areas of Drama, Dance and English. The program Georgia refers to is our 2015 presentation of What is the Matter with Mary Jane? a production that addressed mental health issues in teenagers. We were proud to present not only a great performance but add quality workshops with world leaders in this field from the University of Sydney.

education with having a great time: James Morrison will be here to play outstanding jazz for young audiences; Julianne Moores’ book Freckleface Strawberry becomes a musical with a powerful message about self-acceptance and Treehouse Theatre returns with their powerful, verbatim theatre work performed by young refugees.

Welcome to Seymour’s 2016 artseducation program. The testimonial above from Georgia Downes sums up what the Seymour Centre aspires to within our annual arts-ed program for students and teachers: delivering top quality arts experiences that move, inspire and educate.

This theme continues in 2016 most notably though our presentation of Huang Yi and Kuka, an incredibly inventive performance where a robot “dances” with humans. This performance is for students of science, design and technology as well as the arts. A workshop and tour of the University’s Australian Centre for Field Robotics follows, making this a wonderfully unique event.

Our broader mission is to connect learning through the performing arts with a range

FRECKLEFACE STRAWBERRY

SYDNEY PREMIERE Based on the beloved New York Times best selling book by celebrated actress Julianne Moore, Freckleface Strawberry is a fun and touching family musical which explores tolerance, self-esteem and respect for others, in an entertaining, fun and musical way! LIFE WITHOUT ME BY DANIEL KEENE

SYDNEY PREMIERE The service is erratic, the manager dubious, there aren’t even any fish in the tank. But if you’re uncertain of who you are and have no clue where you’re headed, this lousy hotel could be the perfect sanctuary. In Life Without Me, much-awarded playwright Daniel Keene has crafted an Australian existential fable that feels awkwardly familiar. Trapped in a hotel that would rival Fawlty Towers, guests are thrown into chaos as a storm of sheer incompetence is unleashed. If they can endure the utter ineptitude, these blow-ins, drifters and muddled souls may check out with a little less personal baggage than when they checked in.

HUANG YI AND KUKA The Seymour arts-education program aims to expand the boundaries of syllabus related performances, presenting events that add value to the study of a range of subject areas. Huang Yi and Kuka is a brilliant example of this as acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi and his robot companion KUKA bring razor sharp precision and stunning artistry to stage. Harmoniously weaving together the art of dance and the science of mechanical engineering, Huang Yi and Kuka is a poetic work that flawlessly intertwines modern dance and visual arts with the realm of robotics.

Huang Yi and Kuka investigates important questions about the role of artificial intelligence in our present and our future lives, exploring if it’s really possible to have meaningful interaction with machines. Huang Yi takes 10 hours to program one minute of robot movement. This special schools performance includes a practical workshop with Huang following the performance plus tour of the University of Sydney’s Australian Centre for Field Robotics, one of the largest robotics research institutes in the world.

THE ORIGINAL GREASE AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Chicago. 1959. Before two movies and three Broadway productions, summer lovin’ happened on Lake Michigan and the Pink Ladies were a group of working class outsiders living on Chicago’s Northwest Side. Including never-before-heard music, lyrics and scenes, original author Jim Jacobs and Chicago’s American Theatre Company reconstructed The Original Grease to present an authentic angle to the classic musical. Grease is not one word, it’s greasy hair, greasy food, and grease from under the hood of a car. The Original Grease is a rebellious, raunchy, explosion of teen angst, friendship, community and rock ‘n’ roll. Prepare for an all-new, emotionally charged-perspective on the world’s most famous musical that gives us a last look at the lives and loves of 50’s teens and their music.

Featuring musical favourites Greased Lightening, Look At Me I’m Sandra Dee, Born To Hand Jive, We Go Together, Beauty School Dropout, as well as brand new material written specifically for The Original Grease, this production provides a fascinating insight into the 40 year development and evolution of the popular musical. Recommended for mature youth audiences 14+ due to mature themes, sexual references, coarse language. THE TAMING OF THE SHREW BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Shakespeare’s love stories challenge us very deeply. They tend to be models of disharmony and madness in which trust, patience and finally, hope, are only reached through chaos and pain. They are as troubling as they are funny, and as beautiful as they are disturbing. The Taming of the Shrew captures that paradox perfectly, among the most challenging yet most exuberant and enjoyable plays ever written.

Sport for Jove’s world-class production won unanimous critical acclaim when performed outdoors in its 2011/12 Summer Festival Season. This reimagined gem, set in the silent film era, returns to the Seymour Centre’s York Theatre stage. Nominated for 5 Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Production – this strictly limited season is not to be missed! Director: Damien Ryan

“This Shrew simply took off and stayed afloat in a balloon of ideas from director Ryan and his skilled cast. Ryan has a superb theatrical imagination. This is one of the most cogent, alive, articulate, fun, technically competent Shakespeare productions I have ever seen.” James Waites, former SMH Critic

“…O full of scorpions is my mind dear wife…” Shakespeare’s most immersive and haunting play tells of the murderous ascent to greatness of a husband and wife who believe they can control time and destiny. A loving couple, suffering the loss of a child, are surrounded by the children of others – of the King, Macduff, Banquo. Is their criminal act an act of love in that terrible void, a sacrifice she makes for him and in return, he for her? Sport for Jove’s critically acclaimed
