May 2018 Gift a Book to Honor Moms, Dads & Grads! Need a new gift idea for Mother’s Day? Have a special graduate you’d like to honor? And what about the Dad who already has a garage full of power tools? Honor and celebrate them with a book gifted to the library through our gift book program. You’ll find the form online under our Donate button, or at the library desks. Minimum suggested amount is $25. A new book will be selected by one of our librarians; your gift book will be identified with a book plate, and an acknowledgement card announcing your gift will be sent to the individual you name. Your name and the honoree’s name will also be listed in our monthly newsletter, unless otherwise specified.

Teen Volunteers The Children’s Department is currently looking for Teen volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Club. Volunteers can be students entering 8th grade though Seniors in High School. A Teen Volunteer Pizza Party will be held on May 24th from 6:00PM - 7:00PM, this is required for all Summer Volunteers. A Dedication To One of Our Most Dedicated Volunteers Mary joined the Friends of SPL in 1998 and her longtime love and devotion to the library is shown through the growth and success of the Book Sales. She sorts through all the donations, putting them into the appropriate genre, setting some aside for special and holiday sales. So many have made a regular habit of browsing “Mary’s Sale Table” to find a book (or purse or trinket or holiday gift!) just right for them. Mary served the library but also her book sale clients; some asked her to keep an eye out for a specific book or books on a certain topic… and Mary did! Mary’s second home is the library due to her diligent attention to donated books and her care and friendship with all. Though she recently retired from her volunteer work at the library, Mary is a forever Friend!

This Month’s Display Cases: On May 5 th the display cases will open a new show, featuring the artwork of Elizabeth Rose, a Pittsburgh area artist who is currently attending graduate school in Philadelphia. Rose has researched and created many series of artworks which explore landscape, migration, ecology, and place. She uses traditional methods of printmaking and photographic processes to create works on paper, illustrations, installations, and public art. 8
