Throughout our 142 year history, the Sewickley Public Library has remained true to our mission of creating a center for lifelong learning. No matter the format -- written, audio, visual, or digital, our patrons have opportunities to challenge their minds, explore new cultures and enjoy the works authors, illustrators, educators, and entertainers.

Library supporters, which include all of our donors and volunteers, were pivotal in 2014 to enhancing our services and collections. We strive to provide superior library service to all residents by building on established traditions and providing the best in new practices. As you read through this Annual Report, our 2014 accomplishments demonstrate that the library continues to thrive and is a vital center of leaning, communication, culture and enjoyment. Thank you for your support!

Mission Statement The Mission of the Sewickley Public Library is to serve as a center of lifelong learning by providing free access to informational, educational, cultural and recreational library resources that address the interests and needs of the children and adults in the Quaker Valley region.

The Library seeks to fulfill its mission by providing access to the world of ideas and imagination through its educational and informational resources, enrichment programs, welcoming environment and competent staff and volunteers.

2014 Highlights 

The Teen and Children’s Department received $1,500 from the Kiwanis to provide STEAM programming. STEAM engages students in integrated learning as they explore the world around them, create innovative solutions to problems and communicate their results while learning Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.



As part of the library’s Strategic Plan, the library embarked on freshening up and reimaging the library’s website and publications. The logo was spruced up with color (green and blue) and the tagline, “Great Stories Start Here” has been incorporated into all external communications. The library also initiated a program for collecting stories from patrons regarding their personal reasons and satisfaction with the library.

Dustin Shilling, Systems Librarian, undertook and completed a monumental task this year; we call it the Sewickley Herald Digitization Project. In cooperation with Trib Total Media and the Eddie and Diane Marx Family, the Sewickley Herald, since its inception, is now available for anyone to search from our website. History buffs, genealogists and plain curious folks can search from any computer anywhere in the world 103 years of local news, sports, advertising and more.

Dustin researched and accomplished the many facets of this complex project. Trib Total Media granted the library permissions to publish the Sewickley Herald from our website. Due to the untimely death of Diane Marx, the library received a significant number of Memorial Donations in her memory. Since Diane was an avid newspaper reader, Eddie, her husband, and her daughters agreed that funding the digitization of the Herald would be an appropriate way to honor Diane.

Sewickley Public Library is the first library in the western PA to digitize its neighborhood newspaper. It’s also the first newspaper that Trib Total Media owns that has been digitized.

Featured Programs Mini-Golf Workshop & Family Mini Golf in the Library We held 3 sessions for children to come and build their own mini-golf course holes. We made a total of 9 golf holes with 3 kids on a team working together to build 1 hole. The courses were laid out in the library and parents and children were able to play all the mini-golf hole courses during a special family program.

Life-Size Candy Land Librarian Charlene Mitchell built decoration pieces and board game layout to fill our Community Room. These included: a plum tree, lollipop trees, peanuts, gum drops, chocolate bars, ice cream cones, and King’s Castle.

The children were their own piece in the game, pulling a card and moving to the correct spot.

Featured Programs Healthy Aging Exercise Many older adults are benefiting from Healthy Aging Exercise classes. Using a program authorized by the Arthritis Foundation and conducted by a certified volunteer, these classes stress flexibility and movement.

Beatle Mania In February , the library held a Beatlemania party in celebration of 50 years of Beatles!

Twenty-five people of all ages participated in the event which featured trivia, name that tune, photo-ops, and Beatle treats.

889 Featured Programs Teen Battle of the Books 2014 The 9th year of our annual Teen Battle of the Books was our biggest yet, with nearly 400 students competing in 6th, 7th and 8th, and High School levels of the competition.

After-Hours Programming

The Teen Department continued its tradition of after-hours parties and programs for students in grades 6-12, giving them a fun, safe place to socialize and cut loose. In 2014, we held fifteen after-hours events. These events have attracted more than 500 students in grades 6-12 to the library.

BLOSSOM Leadership Program for Girls In 2014, the Teen Department, with Floyd Faulkner and Quaker Valley, offered a leadership program for middle school girls in grades 7 & 8. Led by Valerie Faust, the program met one Saturday a month for six months and instructed the girls on a wide variety of life and professional skills.

The library replaced wireless access points in 2014 with new equipment to support more users at faster speeds.

Featured Projects In the spring the library installed digital signage above the main circulation area to provide notifications, images, and information about upcoming library events.

In 2014 all public and staff computers in the library were upgraded and replaced. New PCs feature upgraded memory, processor speed, and larger displays.

A new self-service printing station was installed to allow patrons to pay for and release black and white and color prints at their convenience.

171 students used Tutor.com, a free, 1-on-1 tutoring service funded by the library.

Friends of the Library

The Friends signature fundraising event, Savoring Sewickley, sold out for the first time pre-event! A new design for the invitations and website were created in honor of the 15th anniversary. E-ticketing was also implemented.

Nineteen area chefs donated specialty dishes and wait staff to the event. Beverage vendors, garden clubs, legislators and several individuals donated goods or services for a perfect evening.

Other Friends annual fundraisers include three yearly book sales and an annual appeal letter.

Gifts to the library from the Friends include financial donations for our collections, support for the Children’s and Teen Battle of the Books, and funds to purchase the prizes for the Adult, Teen and Children’s Summer Reading Clubs.

Special donations to the library for 2014 included: 

Author Visit The Sewickley Area Librarians (SAL) arranged for author Laura Tarshis to visit the library, Quaker Valley Schools and Sewickley Academy.

Each book in the I Survived … series tells a terrifying and thrilling story from history, through the eyes of a boy who lived to tell the tale.

Message from the Board President 2014 was another successful year for your Sewickley Public Library.

Youth and teen programs continue to grow. It is amazing to see that over 500 students participated in the Battle of the Books. Our librarians are instilling the love of reading and books in the youth of Sewickley.

Adult programming expands to include everything from computer classes, to photography, book clubs and meditation classes. At the same time our statistics show that the traditional activities of checking out books, DVDs, CDs and periodicals continues to be strong with nearly 300,000 items checked out in 2014. Our staff and volunteers can truly be proud of the success of this library. We are grateful for our relationship with the Quaker Valley School District, Regional Asset District, and the Friends of the Library, all of whom provide considerable funding to our operations. Finally, thank you to our patrons and those who donate to the library; we could not offer the diverse collections or stimulating programs that we do without your support.
