CARNIVAL IS ME AUTOBIOGRAPHY

HEARTY SERVE OF APPRECIATION FOR SCHOOL CHAPLAINS OVER BREAKFAST

This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports.

Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.

TAKING ENROLMENTS FOR 2026

“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.

The 2025 Redland City Mayoral Chaplaincy Prayer Breakfast has raised more than $20,000 for chaplaincy support programs in local state schools.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said the funding would go towards programs that provided support for Redlands Coast students, families and school staff.

Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.

“This event has a long history and I’ve been pleased to continue, make a few changes, and see the money raised going to a very worthy cause – helping to fund the wonderful chaplains who work in our state schools across Redlands Coast,” the Mayor said.

Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.

“More than 260 people attended this year’s event, demonstrating the support in our community for programs that make a real difference to the lives of young people and the people who care for them.

“This year’s community contribution of more than $20,000 adds to more than $240,000 raised over previous years.

He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).

“This is a wonderful result and testament to the support and generosity of all those who have attended these breakfasts or been involved as a sponsor or supporter.

Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum.

“In particular, I’d like to thank Lions Club of Capalaba for its donation of $5000 at the event.”

The breakfast was held at the Alexandra Hills Hotel and Conference Centre on Tuesday 26 August.

Photos from the event are available on the Redland City Council website.

“The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”

Mayor Jos Mitchell said that while the planning process could seem daunting, breaking it down into each puzzle piece and then seeing how they fit together could help.

“With this initiative, I have been informed Council will share clear and practical information on key planning topics designed to explain how planning works, why it matters to our city, and how decisions are made.”

“It also aims to address diverse community needs such as an ageing and geographically dispersed population and disengaged young people.”

The Mayor said previous grant recipients have spanned creative fields such as theatre, music, fashion, dance, visual art, craft, and film.

ACTIVATION FUND TO UNLOCK

A FURTHER 8,250 NEW HOMES IN LOGAN

A further 8,250 new homes will be unlocked in Logan with critical infrastructure projects set to be fast-tracked under the Crisafulli Government’s landmark $2 billion Residential Activation Fund.

The Crisafulli Government has today announced funding under the Residential Activation Fund (RAF) will support the construction of two critical infrastructure projects in Logan which will unlock 8,250 new homes.

The Residential Activation Fund will deliver a $20 million boost towards a $61.3 million development in the Flagstone Priority Development Area (PDA) which is set to unlock 3,350 new homes.

The Fund will also deliver a $10 million boost towards the $20 million Yarrabilba Dollarbird Drive Intersection which is set to unlock 4,900 new homes in the Yarrabilba PDA.

Under the former Labor Government, housing lot approvals slumped by 29 per cent, leading to record-low rental vacancy rates and a skyrocketing social housing waitlist across Queensland.

Today’s announcement comes just months after the Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie and Logan City Council Mayor Jon Raven announced the first RAF project which delivered $136 million towards a critical wastewater treatment plant to unlock more than 20,000 new homes as part of Logan’s Local Infrastructure Plan.

“The Crisafulli Government’s landmark $2 billion Residential Activation Fund is reversing Labor’s Housing Crisis after the former Government oversaw Queensland having the lowest rate of home ownership in the country,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“Logan is an amazing place to raise a family so I know there will be many more people moving to our city to enjoy the great lifestyle, community spirit and affordable homes we have available.”
