CITY PLAN AMENDMENT TO IMPROVE HOUSING DIVERSITY

Redland City Council has adopted a major amendment to its City Plan to facilitate the delivery of higher quality apartment and townhouse developments.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said the amendment, adopted at today’s General Meeting, assists to ensure medium-density developments reflected the city’s character while providing greater housing diversity for a growing population.

“This is the result of a great deal of consultation following the adoption of the previous City Plan in 2018,” Mayor Mitchell said.

“Implementing these changes will help ensure City Plan remains current and aligns with community expectations around maintaining the quality of life and amenity on Redlands Coast.

“A greater diversity of housing options, including multiple dwellings located close to centres and public transport, is

important to manage expected population growth.

“This diversity also helps meet the changing housing and lifestyle needs of the community by providing greater housing choice.”

Planning and Regulation Portfolio representative Cr Rowanne McKenzie said the amendments aligned with one of the strategic goals, Liveable Neighbourhoods, outlined in Council’s Corporate Plan, Our Future Redlands – A Corporate Plan to 2026 and Beyond.

“This includes sustainably managing growth and quality development in the city through planning, implementation and management of City Plan,” Cr McKenzie said.

This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports. Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.

“Council is also committed to enhancing the unique character and liveability of our city for the community through coordinated planning.”

“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.

Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.

Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.

He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).

Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum.

“The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”

Construction of critical infrastructure to support housing projects in the Scenic Rim is set to be fasttracked under the Crisafulli Government’s landmark $2 billion Residential Activation Fund.

The Crisafulli Government has today announced funding of $7.3 million under the Residential Activation Fund will support the construction of a critical trunk infrastructure project in the region linked to 384 new house lots previously approved by Scenic Rim Regional Council.

This investment will fully-fund the infrastructure required to kickstart the Golf Links Park Estate project including the delivery of water, sewer and roads infrastructure.

The $2 billion Residential Activation Fund has received 178 submissions – 64 from South East Queensland and 114 from regional, rural and remote Queensland.

The Crisafulli Government’s 2025-26 Budget is delivering up to $1 billion for round one of the Residential Activation Fund, doubled from the original $500 million, in response to the overwhelming support and availability of shovel-ready projects.

Round one funding focuses on the construction of critical trunk infrastructure needed such as water supply, sewerage, stormwater, and roads needed to unlock new residential developments and ease Labor’s Housing Crisis.

The $2 billion Residential Activation Fund is a key pillar of the Crisafulli Government’s Securing Our Housing Foundations Plan and is breaking down the barriers for infill and greenfield developments..

Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause acknowledged the support provided would help Scenic Rim Regional Council and all ratepayers in the Scenic Rim.
